Interesting, forward-thinking drum 'n bass.......2006-12-23
This is a very good drum 'n bass album with a lot of interesting features. I must disagree with the previous reviewer as to the merit of Pull the Plug. However, I should also mention that I came to London Elektricity through Power Ballads, thus my perspective is different. I don't own Billion Dollar Gravy, so I can't make comparisons.
What I CAN say is, this CD features some very energetic music that differs from a lot of the rather generic drum 'n bass circulating these days. The track times should be the first clue. How many drum 'n bass and jungle artists have 10 and 12 minute tracks (Goldie notwithstanding)? A lot of drum 'n bass may *seem* to go on for 12 minutes, but that's just because it's monotonous. Songs such as P.B.E. are considerably more complex featuring definite formal development. This is actually pretty significant because it shows that drum 'n bass hasn't said all it has to say - there are new directions and new techniques to explore.
Another interesting feature is the use of an acoustic bass on some of the tracks. This is probably the best use of acoustic bass since Roni Size's New Forms. There is great variety to the tracks, which helps this avoid the DJ Krust pitfall of everything sounding really similar. You can listen to this CD straight through without getting weary. Along the way you'll hear some slower funk tracks, some excellent soul vocals, and a lot of really excellent beats.
If you're a fan of drum 'n bass or jungle and you're looking for something different, this is worth a listen. It doesn't quite justify the grossly inflated "import" price, but it's definitely worth picking up from one of the marketplace sellers. If you like it, be sure to check out Power Ballads - it's different, but equally great.
London Elektricity Fail To Deliver.......2005-04-17
Very dissapointed with this album. I totally disagree with the other reviewers who have rated this anything above a 2. I have 'Billion Dollar Gravy' and all the Plastic Surgery Compilations. These show London Elextricity as I have come to know them, flying the flag for Hospital Records with cool liquid funk. 'Pull The Plug' is a pale reflection of any London Elektricity material since 2000 really. The collection of tunes are from the period 1996-1999 and perhaps this was an experimental period for London Elektricity, where they were just trying to find their feet and their own style. Only a couple of the tunes have been written By Chris Goss and Tony Colman (now the sole member of London Elektricity). The tunes do not really go in any direction and have a distinct lack of any meaningful beats. 'Superstructure' (from a later Plastic Surgery Comilation) appears on this album. I can certainly see why John B had to remix this. It is a very ordinary track with a very placid beat. The whole album follows this format really. In short do not buy it, you will be dissapointed if you are looking for anything close to 'Billion Dollar Gravy'!

If you liked DJ Shadow's "Entroducing", think of this as a more upbeat/go-get-em version of that. In every way it is just as much if not more of a masterpiece than that album. From totally original and intricate beats, brilliant arrangements, long flowing songs -- everything about this cd is just perfect -- it's obvious a lot of time was spent on all these songs. As mentioned above, some of these songs are a few years old too, which implies these fellows have had a finger on the underground for awhile (not surprisingly, really). If you like Bukem or Shadow or the like, you MUST HAVE this cd (It's actually worth the import price, unless you can find it on vinyl somewhere).
It should hit the US soon if Bukem's becoming popular there.......2000-06-03
Recently published LTJ Bukem's "Journey Inwards" seems to have further escalated a trend for mellow, ambient Drum'n'Bass typically symbolized in the extensive use of live string and horn instruments. In short, London Elektricity fits perfectly with this development--though, some tracks recorded on "Pull the Plug" dates back even to '96 and most '98. That means tracks here are older than any tracks on "Journey Inwards". That's amazing. I wonder if they foresaw the future. There are no shorter tracks than 7 min on this album (I have normal one with 9 tracks) and they vary from down-tempo soul/triphoplike one with smooth female voice singing, to wickedly energizing bass that make you stand up and dance (I just wish that they would feature MCs in the next album). Unfortunately, live performance was cancelled when I went to see them but the two main man, Tony Colman and Chris Goss did more than a good job to keep the audience going with very very hard beats.
It seems to me that today's Drum'n'Bass scene is more lively than ever thanks to musicians committed to entertain and experiment, by presenting different forms and possibilities to this culture. And I just can't forget London Elektricity among them.
A quite good Trip Hop CD.......1999-07-24
London Elektricity is Trip Hop CD with much acid or jungle style in. It's quite a good music other CD: "Sofa Surfers cargo" (much better)
