Naked Lunch showcases the collaboration between jazz artist Ornette Coleman and Academy Award winning composer Howard Shore(Lord of the Rings trilogy). This jazz soundtrack includes an ensemble collection of Coleman's musicians including J.J. Edwards, Aziz Bin Salem, David Hartley, Barre Phillips, Denardo Coleman and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Quite possibly Howard Shore's best work yet..........2006-08-24

I've always enjoyed Howard Shore's work, even way before he became a household name with the mammoth scores for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I personally feel that he is at his best when doing the scores for Cronenberg's works.

With Naked Lunch, I think Shore managed to create a perfect soundscape to go along with director David Cronenberg's crazed adaptation of William Burrough's cult novel. Shore, along with famed saxophonist Ornette Coleman, join together to create a strange hybrid of mood music and frenetic jazz that fits the film perfectly. This isn't typical jazz and is very free form but still, it's definitely one of the best film scores I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's not for everyone but if you appreciate a good, moody movie score, look no further for this is one of the absolute best.

Lastly, it reminds me a bit of the score that he did for "The Cell", due to the Middle East sounding bits laced throughout the album and out of all of his scores, I'd say it resembles that one the most. The lonely saxophone also reminds me of the score for "Angel Heart", the sax in which was played by Courtney Pine.

coleman/shore together are like what miles davis and angelo badalamenti would've come up with!yes,it's that good!have a few stiff drinks,pop this in,and close your eyes...

But as a free jazz loving comic book guy, I have to set all goofiness aside and say that this is a touching tribute to one of the great artists. While I hear all the prog/fusion touches, this album feels to me like the Modern Jazz Quartet thrown to the farthest corners of the universe. True 60's comicbook music. Who'd have thunk the guitar player would end up in Wilco? I cherish this album.

Gregg Bendian's Interzone is back with more cool, cerebral space music. Vibes, guitar, bass and drums. "Requiem" leads off with a Monkish number, "Kirby's Fourth World," and then comes "New Gods," which is clearly in the '70s progressive rock vein. This establishes the territory for the rest of the album, all 79 minutes of it! There are 7 tracks in all, and except for the last one, they are all between 9 and 18 minutes long -- complex compositions with lots of space for improvisation.

This is the third recording by "Bendian's vibes group" (he is also known for his drumming in other contexts). The first, simply called "Interzone," was the most diverse and complex, with Mark Dresser on bass. Last year's "Myriad" was more clearly looking back to '70s prog-rock and fusion, with a sleek, crystalline sound. "Requiem" is quite similar to "Myriad," but with longer, spacier numbers and less dynamic range -- it sounds like it could be from the same sessions.

Percussionist Gregg Bendian has played in a variety of group settings, but it's with his multifaceted Interzone project that he's really shined as a bandleader and composer. A virtual powerhouse of the indie-jazz avant-garde, Interzone features Bendian, twin brothers Alex and Nels Cline (on drums and guitar, respectively), and bassist Steuart Liebig performing Bendian's compositions. Despite the band members' formidable jazz roots, however, "Myriad" never fixates on one genre. The songs breathe, swing ("Intrepid"), and even touch upon the '70s fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra (in an arrangement of that group's "Sanctuary"). But Bendian & Co. also create haunting soundscapes ("Interzonia"), complex avant-rock pieces ("Pattern Master," "Drive") and noir-like tunes for imaginary soundtracks ("Diaspora"). "Myriad"'s songs are at once incredibly spacious and tightly composed: Just as the notes and the beats themselves do, the spaces in-between drift, float and linger. Drama and tension sometimes come through Cline's wild guitar runs (see his shimmering solo in "Tactics"), but the overall effect is one of slow, infinitesimal and eerily beautiful movement.

...simply unbelievable!!! Gregg Bendian is undoubtedly one of the most whacked out composers of our time...classic fusion feel mixed with the evil sounds of king crimson, but done with instruments you almost never hear (glockenspiel, vibes, etc.)...the guitar playing is excellant, very remeniscent of John McLaughlin...anyone who is open minded, and loves crazy, technical, tripped out music needs to add this to their collection!!!
