Malevolent megalomaniac or eerie artiste? Rob Zombie is a bit of both. With spooky metal music that's as colorful and kitschy as its comic art, the singer's solo debut bears more than a little resemblance to his band of many years, White Zombie. These 13 tracks (yeah, there just had to be 13!) continue to explore Zombie's fascination with psychotic noise, pummeling grooves, campy samples, and all things horrific. Instead of just playing dictator, however, this astrocreep allows space for cohorts such as guitarist Danny Lohner and drummers John Tempesta and Tommy Lee to shine darkly. He also shares artistic credit for the LP's elaborate 24-page booklet. Zombie's finely crafted disc is heavy-metal thunder that's turbocharged for the new millennium. --Janiss Garza

this album f'n hits...if u dont own a copy of it follow instructions: push start, then shut down, hop in jalopy and drive to local record store to purchase it. 13 songs (13 tales of cadaverous cavorting inside the spookshow international) stand out songs are living dead girl, dragula and superbeast but you can play the entire album from start to finish no problem. if you like to bang your head then you will surely love this!

4 out of 5 stars Rob Zombie - 'Hellbilly Deluxe' (Geffen) 4 1/2 stars.......2007-02-25

Review #335. Rob Zombie's first solo work after he took a short leave from White Zombie. I remember telling fans that he'll go solo ONLY if this debut of his sells good enough for him to spark up a solo career. Looks like I was right, as Rob never went back to White Zombie since. Tracks here that will remain as true 'extreme metal' gems to us loyal long-timers include "Call Of The Zombie", the *ss-stomper "Dragula" (still like catching the video for this song), "How To Make A Monster", the awesome mosh-pit staple "Living Dead Girl" and "Spookshow Baby". Simply a must-have, if there's still anyone out there that doesn't possess a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Zombie, Zombie!.......2007-01-12

Hellbilly Deluxe has to be the best & far most addictive album of all his solos yet the best of them all. Sinister Urge is a second best then Educated Horses which is last in my book.

"Dragula", "Superbeast", & "Living Dead Girl". 3 great singles in one album & not to mention other great horrific tracks like "Meet The Creeper", "The Ressurection Of Ballad Joe & Rosa W****", "What Lurks On Channel X?", "Demonoid Phenomenom", & "Return Of The Phantom Stranger" will geet you spooken & rocking between your socks as your head chuckles left & right, Zombie style!

This is great for horror metal fans or any heavy metal fans whoever likes that is, metal!

P.S. like I said, Zombie, Zombie! Cause Zombie rocks & rules!

5 out of 5 stars A layed back Metal for most listeners (4.5/5).......2006-07-11

this is most definately the best debut ive heard yet, if white zombie is half as good as this is it is bound to be an incredible debut as well

it opens with call of the zombie, a thirty second opener great opening, then goes straight into superbeast an instant classic. we are graced then with the hearing of dragula, another classic. then living dead girl... great song that has really grown on me. Next we have perversion 99: sweet title for an minute and three quarter song. we have now Demonoid Phenomenon great song great racing song. Spookshow baby, heres the sound that he is famous for, his wierd experimental sounds are greatly shown here. How to make a monster, didnt quite understand it but still kinda good. Meet the creeper is the best song he has to date its a perfect song worth the buy on its own. The Ballad... is an ok song, a longer one shocking for me. What lurks on channel x?: is the weakest song on here but is one of the shortest too. Return of the Phantom stranger... great song with more of that great expermimental sound. The beginning of the end is an ok ending but not that good of a song

This cd is recomended to anyone who wants to try him out, or White Zombie fans this is good stuff here

5 out of 5 stars Good Industrial-Metal.......2006-05-04

This Rob's best album, more darker & heavier than "The Sinister Urge" and "Educated Horses".My favourite song is "Return Of The Phantom Stranger",but all song is good (except one-two fillers). Most powerful track is Dragula and Superbeast, but the hardest is "What Lurks On Channel X ?".Good guitar riffs, with techno sound, and monotonic drums is characteristics on this cd...the vocal's not bad.If you like White Zombie, you'll like this album.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2006-05-21

Many of the songs by Rob Zombie are included in the Twisted Metal Series games, such as Twisted Metal III and 4

3 out of 5 stars Good,but missing artwork.......2006-05-01

I prefer The Sinister Urge more, but this is still a good album even though it sounds more nu-metal than White Zombie. My big complaint is with the packaging. Why is the artwork from the original cd missing? You think they could have included it along with some new stuff.

4 out of 5 stars "Hellbilly Deluxe" (squared).......2006-01-10

Rob Zombie's first solo outing since disbanding White Zombie came in 1998 with "Hellbilly Deluxe"; a surprisingly pumping and enjoyable dirge that managed to overcome the repetitiveness that would plague Zombie's later releases. "Dragula" and "Living Dead Girl" became massive hits, and were soon enough overplayed and made tons of appearances on various movie soundtracks. This Deluxe Edition features the original album, plus a booklet of new artwork and a bonus DVD containing videos for every song directed by the man himself. What's really surprising here is that nearly eight years after it's original release, "Hellbilly Deluxe" is still worth headbanging to and still enjoyable, and it remains the best material that Rob Zombie has ever done solo (nothing will ever touch the magic he helped create in White Zombie). This is a great buy for fans who don't own the original copy of "Hellbilly Deluxe", but for those who already do, this isn't worth laying down the cash for unless you are an absolutely die hard fan.

4 out of 5 stars Still awsome after all this time.......2006-01-03

I first got into Rob Zombie back in my Sophmore year of High Schoo. I purchesed a heavily censored version of Hellbilly Deluxe from Wal-Mart.

I'm not as into this form of music as I use to be, but still it's nice to revisit old favorites from time to time.

Now then I know some people complain about Mr. Zombie taking forever to release new material. Frankly from what I know of him Rob Zombie believes in hardwork. Rather than sending out manufactured work like most popstars do Rob Zombie builds his material from the ground up. Thus he turns out a product that is higher in quality, also he sees to it that his fan base is always supported by constantly re-releasing older material often retooled, perfect for those like me that have gone through multiple copies of his work.

Dispite what another reviewer has sad all the songs from Hellbilly are here on a music CD. Also he includes a DVD with music videos for all 13 songs along with two remixes of his other work.

5 out of 5 stars Great Horror CD with accompanied DVD of videos.......2005-12-31

Rob Zombie was the best thing to come out of the 1990's. His mix of industrial rock, horror, art and psychodelica really gave a kick in the ass to rock that was well needed during the GRUNGE decade. Rob Zombie is the new Alice Cooper for the millenium. White Zombie was great, but HELLBILLY DELUX is his musical masterpiece (Devil's Rejects being his movie masterpiece!)...This is a great, great release-musicly and now, visually with a DVD featurung a video clip for EVERY Hellbilly Delux song!!!! A bit pricey, but worth it!!! A great treat to us ZOmbie fans...Hopefully, he'll make a new cd and ALSO releases it with a DVD featuring a video for each song!!! Maybe he'll even do a rerelease like this for sinister urge!!!! What is missing is a dvd concert video, but till then, get this cd/dvd combo...

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Cash........2004-12-07

Why did they bother to make an Edited version of Hellbilly Deluxe? The only swears are on the Song the Ballad of Resurrection Joe and Rosa Whore, which here is just titled the Ballad of Resurrection Joe. So you get one edited track! Count it, 1. Also the artwork is screwed around with. The Pentagram and the x on Rob's Forehead are removed, as well as artwork in the sleeve and no lyrics are given. The skull and Crossbones along the side are also gone. I purchased this by mistake a long time ago because it wasn't clearly labeled as a clean CD. that only infuriates me even more. This Edit is absolutely pointless and most of all, Stupid.

4 out of 5 stars A True Rock Monster!!!.......2004-02-05

Rob Zombie is a true rock monster! His style of music isn't for all tastes, and the lyrics might be offensive to some people. His music revolves around blood & guts, corpses, decomposition, and of course, zombies. Songs like Superbeast, Dragula, Demonoid Phenomenon, and Return Of the Phantom Stranger are excellent when played LOUD!!! I would encourage any hardcore metal fan to purchase the uncensored version of this CD, and NOT the edited version. You'll get a 24 page booklet with song lyrics and shocking comic-like photos. Even on the explicit version, Rob Zombie doesn't use much profanity. But he still jams in his own unique style of 'death' metal.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Horror Rock.......2002-12-24

I think Rob Zombie has become a household word. Everyone knows he rocks. He's got fans ranging from black clad goths, head bangers, normal kids, even posers (unfortunately). He's one of the best theatrical rock acts out there, taking much influence from Alice Cooper. This, his debut is a wonderfully eccentric and experimental album. Many people simply call Zombie "Metal", but Metal is only one influence. There are industrial, electro, gothic, psychadellic, acid rock, rockabilly, and soundtrack elements as well. I don't think people give Zombie enough credit for being so experimental. Anyway, for those who think he is some kind of devil worshipping, evil destroyer of the souls of America's youth, I say this: I myself am a Christian. It irks me when I see pastors of all people going out and giving Christianity a bad name. DO you think people will even listen to you when you come out and attack offensively like this? The same goes for those protesting Marilyn Manson's concerts. Rob Zombie is not a satanist. If you don't see the tongue-in-cheek humor and irony in his lyrics, you're just blind. You might as well be protesting every horror movie and every halloween party that will ever be attended by our "mislead youth". It's all good, clean, spooky fun. Nothing more! Like I said, I'm a christian and I do not find anything subversive, satanic, or truly "evil" in this music at all. Just creepy, b-movie inspired rock & roll, and I think it's alot of fun. So stop putting more kids off to Christianity! Rob Zombie rocks!
Alice Cooper (who has been openly christian for 10 years now) thinks so too.

5 out of 5 stars Zombies..........2001-10-17

Out of all of the reviews I've read, the one that disappoints me the most is by gesusaves@aol.com. Dude, you're preaching to us, over the Net! I don't see why you have to go and attack Rob Zombie's music like that. Tunes like "Meet the Creeper," "Superbeast," "Dragula," and "Living Dead Girl" are sweet pieces of modern music. Rob Zombie hails from White Zombie(as many of you know) and has helped pioneer the industrial/techno metal movement, along with the boys from Ministry, Orgy, Static-X, along with his little bro Spider from PM5K. That is his title. To call him 'an unholy soul' and PREACH about the evils of listening to his music is just not right. I don't know why in the hell Amazon would even publish your review. You didn't tell anybody about the music, genius! You should also be aware that many in the country don't share your faith, so you should not be reading out of your Book to discourage us. C'mon, this is just music! I think his lyrics are funny and thought-provoking, and besides, what Rob believes in is his business, not ours. He, unlike you, is not preaching his beliefs to the world. He is making good music for good people. I don't think your intent had anything to even do with the music at all. You probably didn't even listen to the CD. Why else would you sound so naive? Or CLEARLY indicate that you just HAPPEN to be a reverend? Yikes! So, anyway, for all you true listeners to good metal music, check this CD out, and also keep an eye for Sinister Urge when it comes out. Peace!

4 out of 5 stars Best Edited CD Out There.......2000-03-06

This CD Rocks. His music is the bomb. my favorite somgs are Superbeast, Dragula, Living Dead Girl, Meet The Creeper, and The Ballad of Ressurection Joe and Rosa Whore. the guy talking how Rob is of the devil should know that religeous people would veer away from Rob and not even comment on him while others could listen to him.
