OK, first let me state that I try to be a positive human being in as many ways as possible. Many things in life can challenge a path filled with happy commentary for everyone and everything...lying, cheating, stealing and just plain bad people make it tough every day to be nice. But nothing in years has challenged me to be kind to others as much as listening to this album from Storyteller's Rain. That's the name of this band project led by brain(less)child and ex-Rough Silk member Ferdy Doernberg. It seems no former or current member of the power metal allegiance can keep themselves out of the "concept album" or "project" circuit these days. It's great that there is so much unity between the various members of this genre and there are great albums of this variety (Avantasia comes to mind!) and some not so great ones as well. Storyteller's Rain is, quite simply, not only the worst album on this list, but perhaps the worst album I've heard (and I've heard a bunch!) in about a decade. I suppose the album is doomed right from the start, as anyone named "Ferdy" may not seem to have the moxy of being capable of rocking or rolling (well, not THAT kind of rolling anyway...), and given the band photo, he doesn't look like he could either! I just really am at a loss for words about the music because it's not really music! OK, maybe in the loosest definition it is, but the songs are all so terribly horrible. The production is weak and the musicians sound like, well, bad! Given the power metal roots of all the members in this band, I was expecting power metal of course, or at the very least just plain old metal. Hell, I'd have even settled for rock or perhaps R&B by the time this thing was finished spinning. What we got is none of the afore mentioned styles at all. Instead we are served a vestigial glop of sloshy chords and outrageously poor vocals. Even the song titles suggest a cruel joke on the would be purchaser. Songs like "Sokrates The Kid" (this was the Greek version of "The Karate Kid" I believe, Gerard Depardeau played Ralph Machio's character from the original) and the ridiculous "Conversations In A Cuban Restaurant Somewhere South Of Heaven And North Of Hell" just scream out "warning, the item in your hand is dung" and "put me back! For the living love of God, put me back!" to the person that might pick this up for a closer inspection at the local record store. The vocals on half of this are not even vocals I might add. I mean, it's not singing! No, it's not bad singing, it NOT singing! It's more like dialogue from a middle school drama production. Which is actually in retrospect, how this whole thing sort of leaves you feeling in the end. We go to those things for our kids of course, but for real entertainment value, we leave it to people in the world who are truly talented. On this steaming heap we find no talent and no enjoyment at all. God, I couldn't even get myself to laugh. Storyteller's Rain should rename themselves "Storyteller's Pain", because from front to back the listener is unpleasantly viced into an aural rectal examination of sorts. The kind of appointment that even if you need, you put off going to for months! I spent only two bucks on this lousy cd from a vendor in Germany and I still feel ripped off. Let's all hold hands and pray that the fellow brethren of the power metal world let Ferdy and his buddies know how bad they really did stink on this and that we aren't treated to a follow up examination! 0/5!
