5 out of 5 stars Love hearing new material from the "Rent" cast member--as well as dance mixes!.......2007-06-15

Idina delivers the voice and the remixes in this massive club single--an adapted solo version of a song from the play Wicked! Would be great to get an all new full length album from Idina. Tracks:

1. Tracy Young's Flying Monkey Club mix (8:05) (very circuity tribal mix)
2. Eddie Baez mix (8:42) (Eddie does his great dark hardhouse magic)
3. Hani's Flying So High Club mix (7:04) (funky disco house mix--but it's more like a dub with few of Idina's vocals)
4. Josh Harris mix (7:15) (more of an electro/filter house feel)
5. Funky Junction & Antony Reale mix (6:20) (real smooth, commercial house mix, best suits the vocals)
6. Single Version (3:47) (While I'm ALL about dance mixes, I must say, the pure arrangement of the original guitar ballad version shows off her stunning vocals--this is just an amazing, uplifting power ballad, and hearing the original version, I realize that NONE of the remixes do the song justice)

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Few folk albums indulge in mood swings more severe than the ones on Defying Gravity. "A woman my age, sittin' here cryin'" are the first words Cheryl Wheeler sings on her first album of new material in six years. During the next four older-but-sadder songs, bittersweet is as chipper as it gets. Even the comparatively sunny "Summer's Almost Over" finds the veteran troubadour confiding "I'm crying but I don't know why." But then comes the Caribbean lilt of the title track--written by Jesse Winchester--and the mood lightens, as the instrumental "Clearwater, Florida," and the jazzy syncopation of "Here Come Floyd" continue to chase the clouds away. By the time the album shifts into a couple of live tracks of Wheeler regaling the audience with the cell-phone absurdities of "It's the Phone" and the travails of air travel in "On the Plane," she has her crowd on the verge of tears of laughter. As the reflective "Alice" and redemptive "Blessed" attest, Wheeler is a folksinger for all emotional seasons. --Don McLeese

Album Description

With six years having past since Wheeler's last full-length studio collection (1999's Sylvia Hotel), the much-anticipated Defying Gravity overflows with a wealth of exquisitely crafted, powerfully resonant original songs. While her compositions have been recorded by artists as diverse as Suzy Bogguss, Garth Brooks, Bette Midler, and Linda Thompson, Wheeler's burnished alto, nimble guitar playing, and sly sense of humor insure that she will always be her own best interpreter. Standout tracks on Defying Gravity, like the bittersweet "Summer's Almost Over," the aching opener "Since You've Been Gone," and the careful character study "Alice," are defined equally by Wheeler's gifts as a writer and performer. "On the Plane" and "It's the Phone," both recorded live in concert at the now-defunct Bottom Line in New York City, are priceless examples of Wheeler the satirist. Taken as a whole, Defying Gravity paints a portrait of a performer and composer continuing to discover rewarding new avenues in her finely-developed craft.

5 out of 5 stars Can it get any better?.......2007-04-05

After months of being unable to remove Cheryl Wheeler's Driving Home CD from my CD player years ago, I never really expected any of her newer albums, while excellent, to be able to hit the mark set by that album's sheer lyricism and poignancy. I was wrong. Defying Gravity pretty much matches it stride for stride. There are at least five "genius level" songs on it, in my view ("Alice", "Summer's Almost Over", "Here Come Floyd", "Little Road", and "Blessed"). I noticed how much I'd fallen in love with this album when my children asked me why I kept playing the same song over and over (in that case, it was "Summer's Almost Over", but "Alice" has evoked the same behavior in me). You honestly can't go wrong buying this album. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2006-11-23

I met her in the Medford, Oregon airport-what a delight. I looked her up on Amazon and fell in love with her music. She is absolutely wonderful...what a talent.

5 out of 5 stars Defying Gravity by Cheryl Wheeler.......2006-03-10

I found Cheryl during the "heyday" of Napster, bought all of her albums, she never fails to please!!!

5 out of 5 stars Tears And Laughter.......2005-10-03

Cheryl Wheeler possesses one of the most beautiful and distinctive voices in the music business, and has (especially for these times) that rarest of talents: she writes memorable, TUNEFUL songs. Compelling lyrics are fairly common among the many accomplished "contemporary folk" artists working today. I would even venture to say that "poetry," as opposed to mere jingle-writing, is pretty much expected of anyone looking to rise above the crowd (and it is an ever-expanding crowd). But few have the ability to compose melodies that match or exceed lyrical content. A handful of artists are distinguishing themselves these days in this respect (Dar Williams, John Gorka, Lucinda Williams and Eliza Gilkyson come most immediately to mind), and many of them, like Cheryl Wheeler, have been toiling at the fringes of commercial success for quite a few years. Thankfully, Wheeler and Co. do not seem to care much about the mainstream, and those of us who value music that rises above the usual type of dopey love song that tends to make it into the Top 40, are all the richer for it. Not that Ms. Wheeler does not write about love. It is one of her main subjects, and among her loveliest songs are compositions about every kind of love; they are thoughtful and personal and deep, and have the ability to draw tears from a grown man. This grown man, anyway. On DEFYING GRAVITY, which contains a collection of the most gorgeous melodies she has ever written, Cheryl Wheeler is found at the top of her game. "Little Road," in which Wheeler wonders "how can there be trouble in this world," while marveling at the blissful flow of nature, is heartbreaking, and more potent than any political rant could ever be. "Alice" is equally moving, about a middle-aged woman who becomes nomadic after the death of her husband. "Summer's Almost Over" is of a type of song that Cheryl Wheeler has made her own particular specialty: careful yet emotional observation of the changing seasons, and of nature in general. This one is among her most quietly powerful, and I can't imagine anyone with a heart in their chest not being moved by it.

No losers here, but there is an awkward juxtaposition, as in most of Cheryl's albums, of gorgeous songs with very funny ones. She has a bit of a split personality, and her humor is by turns hilarious and scathing. This "other" Cheryl is best seen and heard live, and, indeed, the satyrical songs on her albums are often from concert performances, as are "It's The Phone" and "On The Plane," included on DEFYING GRAVITY. Thank you, Cheryl, for so perfectly articulating the outrage so many of us feel at the many rude, loud cell phone users that we all encounter on the train, on the bus, in crowds.

There is no such thing as a bad Cheryl Wheeler album, but if you've never explored the worlds of Cheryl Wheeler, this is as good a place as any to start. Simply brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars I'm a fan, but a disappointed one.......2005-03-17

Having been known to go without groceries to attend one of her concerts, and owning most everything she's ever recorded on CD, on tape or on VHS, I would describe myself as a Cheryl Wheeler fan. And I have never failed to find on each of her productions three or four "stop what you are doing and listen to this" songs--until now. Listening to "Defying Gravity" over and over again, I find the accompaniement over-produced, at times amateurish, and often irritating. While the songs are "nice", there are none that grab you by the collar and swing your attention around to them. But, it's still Cheryl--the images are as clear and sharp as ever, her playing is clean and pleasing, and her voice is still as smooth and as sweet as honey-wine--and for this alone could I recommend this CD to another of her fans. Yet there's a big something missing that I cannot quite find the words to describe--I'm listening to her CD, "and I'm crying but I don't know why..."

4 out of 5 stars Tonight We Ride.......2005-08-06

I had this cd on vinyl when LP's were still alive and well. (Who ever heard Of CD's?) Anyway the LP was an EP and there were only six songs at the time. "Tonight We Ride" was the hit but the other songs such as "Thin Ice" and "Don't Throw It All Away" were also great Tracks. This Cd offers so much more. This Band Is tight and should have gone further in their career. If You Know of the Sherbs. Then Buy this Cd, if you heve never heard of them then buy it and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Okay album with one great 80's moment.......2004-03-29

For years I was under the impression that "We Ride Tonight" was a Survivor song from the Dave Bickler days, but I couldn't manage to find out which album it was on. Well, I found out why. I only vaguely remember the name "Sherbs", but in my opinion they put out two of the great lost songs of 80's AOR radio, "We Ride Tonight" and "No Turning Back". I wish they'd been made available on one cd, but since I had to have good copies, I bought both cd's when they came out even though I knew I was buying them for one song each. (I had the albums by then.)

5 out of 5 stars I'm Alive.......2002-11-19

Waited years for this album to go CD! The great sound of Daryl Braithwaite make every song a pleasure to listen too.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Defying Gravity on CD!!.......2000-08-26

Having discovered the Sherbs by accident in my high school years, I had no idea I'd have to wait this long for this CD to finally see the light of day. My high school buddies and I used to party like mad to this album (particularly "We Ride Tonight")and their "Skill" LP. Great material, a very satisfying listen for me and a nice walk down memory lane! Now if only the old Metro All-Star's LPs would be released on CD.... :)

5 out of 5 stars They certainly tried to defy the lack of support.......2000-06-07

Love Defying Gravity, songs in particular that I like are, We ride Tonight, I wanna lay with you, Blood on my hands and Free the Sailor. Sherbs should have lasted much longer than they did.

3 out of 5 stars First track from movie "Revelation".......2007-01-12

I bought this CD because the track "Just Believe" was the theme song for the movie, "Revelation" by Cloud Ten Pictures. While that song is cool, the other ones were not as good and seem like the artist has left the bands of the past to work on his own - he is no good without the original band members of Petra. So I only listen to track 1 and then change disks.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-02-28

As someone always in search of good Christian music I spend alot of time listening to 100's of different titles on the Resound machine at the local bookstore. Be it praise and worship or Hardcore Metal, I don't discriminate and over the years I've picked up a large of array of CD's now nearing the 500 mark. While I've now listened to all John Elefante's albums trying to find one like this one I have had no such luck. This is a great album and unique in itself. It seems that John struggled through bad production in previous attempts and never had the formula to produce a "defying gravity" before or after. Like all great albums the music flows from one song to the next and is highlighted by strong lyrics and what would seem a vast amount of instrumentation at John's disposal. The highlight of the album to me would be the 3rd Cut, "the stream", if John Elefante ever fell into a perfect song for his voice and instrument box this would be it. As artists in general struggle to find themselves, occasionally a great album comes out, examples of this are without number, as are the hopeless albums they produced before and after their moments of grandeur. Everything else aside, this is an album worth having, it's emotional and heartfelt and amazingly put together, a true masterpiece of Christian music.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2003-01-31

John Elefante continues to show the world his God-given talents are truly a gift from above. This man set the rock and roll world on fire in 1980 with Kansas and he continues to grow in leaps and bounds. "Defying Gravity" is his best solo work yet. This is the kind of album that will speak to anyone who listens with powerful lyrics, delivered with an even more powerful voice. More than two years after its release I still catch myself singing tunes from this CD. If you love music sung to perfection then I encourage you to buy this CD. John is truly a gift from God and I can't wait to hear his powerful voice again.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2001-08-22

What can I say but, John , you've outdone yourself! I switch back and forth as to what I like better, Corridors or Defying Gravity. You will not be sorry if you purchase this. Holds up well to the Elefante tradition. Classic!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Defying the Norm in CCM.......2000-09-14

If you are looking for an album full of power, excellent production, superb compositions and first-rate musicianship in the CCM genre, this is it! Not to mention that John Elefante sounds better and better. His vocal interpretation, passion, range and quality is hard to beat (or match).

Although his previous works with KANSAS and his other solo efforts have been good, what stands out most with Defying Gravity, among other things, is the lyrics. More straight-forward and uncompromising.

This one is well worth the admission price. If you dismiss Defying Gravity, you'll miss out on one of the best CCM offerings in a while.

While Defying the CCM formulamatic norm, this is a CD the whole family should enjoy!

I'd give it 4 1/2 stars ...

1 out of 5 stars Did I listen to the same album as the other reviewers?.......2007-01-04

My husband bought this album based on the Amazon reviews. I couldn't disagree more with them. She has a nice voice and parts of every song sound good but not one song on the album was good all the way through. This is a great collection of songs but some really bad arrangements. I suspect the arrangements may be attempts to adjust the songs to accomodate a singer who's vocal range is too limited for these great numbers. I expected some great belting based on the song list but got mostly shouting instead. Her diction is very good, but she seems to hold on to consonants too long which sounds harsh. Some parts of the album (especially the trio she sings with herself) were actually painful to listen to. I would give a 1 star rating to less than 1% of the CDs we own; this is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Love Her - Love her Talent - LOVE this CD!.......2006-11-26

OK, I admit it. I'm a fan, always and forever. That being said, I would still love this recording a WHOLE lot! The song selection is just right. The songs showcase her pipes, yet leave a little room for emotional interpretation. This is real talent, folks, not the bottled, packaged, over produced gunk that gets played on most broadcast stations. For any sophisticated lover of trained, legit singers, and especially the "Broadway voice", you must get this CD, now. I insist!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album........2006-08-09

I heard Debbie sing with piano accompaniment in Delray Beach Florida last spring. The concert was lovely and I bought her CD there just to support her. Then I started listening to it and got hooked. The songs, orchestra, orchestrations, and Debbie's performances are first rate. This is a delightful and impressive display of great music and talent.

5 out of 5 stars A Broadway Diva - Debbie Gravitte.......2006-03-11

What can I say about Debbie Gravitte that hasn't alreay been said? Ms. Gravitte is one of the leaders of Broadway Show music interpretation. I have the distinct pleasure of seeing Ms. Gravitte on the stage. I remember years ago - seeing Debbie in Denver in Zorba. I remember her sensational rendition of the song "Life Is". I performance I have remembered many years later. Several years ago I witnessed Ms. Gravitte thrilling a audience in Arvada, CO with the premiere performance of Defying Gravity . I knew from that moment on the the music from Wicked was going to be truly special. Thank you Debbie Gravitte. Please, please don't loose your humor and I'm looking forward to seeing you on the Great White Way again.

2 out of 5 stars Not as great as these reviews say..........2006-02-08

Specifically what bothers me about his album is an overall lack of rhythm within each song ("Junk Man" and "Monotony" excluded). Ms. Gravitte seems to always be wallowing in the production of her sound and is unable to drive the music forward - she sounds to be minutely behind the beat almost all the time. This makes the ballads drag, and the up tempos lose their excitement. The lady's got a good voice, no doubt about it, but she overuses the "cry" attack on too many notes, and she doesn't really sing with much color - every song is kind of sung in the same way no matter what the emotional content is. If you like a real Broadway belter you will enjoy this album, but perhaps it is best listened to in small doses.

5 out of 5 stars His best Album.......2006-06-06

The good:
I think this album reflects the evolution of Vinnie as a musician and as a guitar player. Though he started amazing the world with his skill, step by step, his works have matured leaving gradually behind the tendency to compile execises in favor of a better structured an composed themes. In this album you wil find concepts that had been already used in previous works, but you`ll notice that they are developed more wisely here. As an example of this i can mention the acoustic tracks in comparison to "never been to Barcelona". Guitar solos of this album have been incredibly increased in shade an expression.
Friends like Steve Morse (Bassist is Dave LaRue) do not make you indifferent...xD
The bad:
Yes, the production sound is a little saturated.
But the worst thing i can say about this album is that it is too good all the time... xD

3 out of 5 stars Fun listening, but not 'great'.......2005-12-18

As a guitarist of ~8 years, I had heard this Vinnie Moore character's name crop up in many conversations, but I hadn't actually heard anything he had done until I picked up a copy of Defying Gravity.

As a guitar-clinic, this album pretty much "pwns" to use the vernacular (though the timing is actually a bit off at times on certain tracks) but the album as a whole is somewhere in the neighborhood of 'decent.'

Production values: There are worse, but it just really isn't produced that well. I'm only something of a hobbyist in the realm of production/recording, but the opening notes of "Emotion Overload" sound to me like they'd be best used as an audio example of "What happens when you abuse compression and/or limiting."

As for the songs, Vinnie shows some formidable song-crafting skills, with a versatility that was surprising to me (Vinnie had always been mentioned in the same breath as a bunch of other shredhead types that, for all their strong points, tend to have a reputation for repeating themselves)

The 'rockers' are solid guitar-driven instrumental rock that are obviously influenced by neo-classical (the shreddy guitar genre, I mean) but go well beyond the stereotypical neo-classical fare. The slow/ballad songs are decent: nothing to replace In The Name Of God or Always With Me Always With You in the guitar-ballad pantheon, but they're not bad.

The real gems are the three acoustic-centric numbers, that bring a sort of flamenco+rock feel to the table. A completely different feel than the rest of the album, which is very cool on its own.

However, the combination of all these things make for a "whole album" experience that is somewhat disjointed. This disc really lacks the focus and cohesiveness required to make a truly great album.

Despite the shortcomings, this album is worth checking out for anybody that's anywhere near a fan of the guitar, and probably most people that aren't. A very enjoyable listen, with some really brilliant guitar playing. Something about Vinnie's playing style/articulation seems to jump out and 'grab you' a lot more than most shredder types. There's no shortage of "wow" moments, but Moore manages to keep the "look what I can do!" feel to a minimum, which is a huge plus in music of this nature (and a huge plus to guitarists with this sort of technique)

High points: Uptempo rockers Defying Gravity and Awaken the Madman, and the acoustic pseudoflamenco on Last Road Home

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars...can't believe you missed the most important points!.......2005-12-10

If you like Vinnie Moore, pick up this album. It's friggin' great. That being said, the two most important aspects of said album are these:
1) The Goddamn Tightest Rhythm Section (Maybe) Ever = Steve Smith & Dave LaRue!!!!!
2) The mix/mastering/production is terrible (as is basically every Shrapnel release ever). Start a petition. Get Varney to cough up the loot to remix AND remaster his entire catalogue so maybe we can get some big drums and audible bass in the speakers. Same with the Steve Morse stuff sometimes...the mixes are just baaaad.

Other than that, a MIGHTY piece of shred-work. Easily one of my favorites in the "guitar" genre. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

3 out of 5 stars Testing the waters.......2005-07-29

I'm not sure what to think, it seems like Vinne might be trying to go a different direction on the last half of the album, but still has yet to define the direction itself. I hope the next effort is more defined.
This is still pretty good though, I'm always amazed at how fluid Vinne can play with such small amounts of distortion.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad album, but disappointing for a master like Vinnie.......2004-03-22

In my opinion, this is my least favorite Vinnie Album. Other than some of the acoustic songs, none of the songs grabbed me. I have all of Vinnie's albums and this one sounds like he ran out of ideas. The best albums in my opinion are "Out of Nowhere" and "Minds Eye". Those albums seemed to have a lot more to them. His chops are awesome as always, but the album is a little boring. I do enjoy the acoustic numbers and a few electric ones, but Vinnie has done better. Vinnie fans will still enjoy this one, but I will never say it is his best. I feel like it's his worst, but even Vinnie's worst is still pretty good. 3.5 stars. Vinnie, it's time to get a little more variety.
