          The Velvet Underground is the legendary avant-rock band that helped spawn the indie-rock genre as we know it today. Compiled here are their first three albums, excellent collections of of poetic lyricism and gritty musical skill -- for rock fans, these are must-haves.

          "Velvet Underground and Nico" is pretty much the only description you need of their Andy Warhol-produced album. Shocking at the time, this album is a dark tangle of S&M, drugs and the oddly sweet love ballad "I'll Be Your Mirror." Lou Reed sings on most songs, but ex-model Nico's thick, sultry vocals are what really stand out.

          "White Light White Heat" lacks the punch of its predecessor, but it's a pretty passable album (if you can call it that -- it's only six songs long). The prettier edges of their debut are stripped away in favor of more abrasive, explosive, gritty, and experimental rock'n'roll.

          "The Velvet Underground" is perhaps the most underrated work that the Velvet Underground made -- their "pretty" album. Possessing catchier rock'n'roll and sweet, poignant ballads, this mellower album relies on exquisite songwriting and good musicianship. It's as unlike "White Light White Heat" as possible.

          The Velvet Underground burned brightly for a very short time, and disintegrated in 1970, still underappreciated by critics and music listeners alike. But their influence has carried over in dozens of bands, most obviously ones like the Dandy Warhols. And now they are counted as one of those bands that you just HAVE to listen to.

          Lou Reed's songwriting is uniformly good in these three albums, although it tends to be a bit drowned out in "White Light." And the songs themselves range from odes to "Heroin" and femme fatales to poignant love songs and the solemn, ethereal "Jesus." Likewise, the music ranges from bombastic to gentle -- basically, if there were extremes to explore, the Velvet Underground would do so.

          The first and third albums are the best, but all of the Velvet Underground's work is worth getting, especially their original studio albums. Highly recommended.

            The music is a 5 out of 5 but the selection is a 3 at best. Not bad if you don't mind the fact that two of guns n roses better albums are completely left out. If you want a gnr greatest hits album the "live era" discs would be a better bet.
