5 out of 5 stars Amazing Band.......2006-08-27

I bought this CD on a whim, and boy was it worth every penny. Its not to easy to find a CD that every song on the CD is a good one. But these guys do, and do it well. They are a Christian band and are really blessed with an amazing gift. They have both rock songs and stuff you can sing in church. With just this one CD, they became one of my favorite bands. Hope you hear more of their tracks and decide to get this CD as part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars FREAKEN AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-19

This band just found me on myspace and requested me to be there friend..so I went and checked out there sound and as soon as I heard it I wanted the album..These guys freaken rock hardcore..If you like bands like Skillet, Pillar, Red, and Thousand foot Krutch, then please please check out this band..There awesome and they need fan support...definitly worth the money, and then some...

5 out of 5 stars Nu-metal done right........2006-02-01

Manic drive is nu-metal that can be compared to bands like linkin park and seether without being as heavy. And while this may sound like something thats been done a million times there is still a lot thats unique about these guys. The vocals for instance are great to listen, the emotion pours throug. The music can go from being heavy(something more, nebulous) to soft(middle of it all, memories) to downright agreesive(Aimlessly, crying) in manic drive uses old methods such as rapping and turn table stuff to make this sound like most nu-metal but it does just enough to distinguish itself with good lyrics and some talented playing.

5 out of 5 stars New to me.......2005-08-26

I had heard the song Memories on the radio a few times, and everytime I was like - WOW, who is that? So now, I've finally tracked it down and this band rocks this song. I love it...the fact that they've been around for so long (this is the 5th album!) and still have that desire to do this for Christ and actually (gasp!) use His name in their heartfelt songs is AMAZING! My props to them indefinately! Sure, I've only heard bits of the other songs - but Memories is AWESOME! Praise God some of these guys are more interested in following God than making money. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Idol.......2006-08-10

This is by far the best album from Billy Idol. Much more mature in musical terms than before. With a brilliant Steve Stevens, this disc puts Billy into my preferred musicians. Listen for example the "Man for all seasons" guitar solo, it's a jazz solo in a rock song, I never heard something similar so well done. Powerful and poetical, his chemical formula is present in their maximum expression.

james were never a revolutionary band .ok brian eno produced this album.so what? he produced laid too which is a 5 star album...

they followed this with the equally dull Millionaires

avoid both,especially this

buy Laid and Seven instead

5 out of 5 stars Whiplashed indeed!.......2004-12-13

I saw James in a small club during the Wah-Wah experimentation stage which was recorded at the same time as Whiplash, not more than a year after they opened for Neil Young's accoustical tour. Both shows were excellent (despite one of Neil's "fan's" complaints about Tim Booth's lack of vocal quality; LOL!), while at the same time completely different.

Whiplash does a wonderful job in melding these two experiences. The relatively 'tame' Laid music shows up (Tomorrow, Homeboy, Avalanche) with some of the electronic Wah Wah explosion I heard in the small club (GreenPeace, Go to the Bank, parts of Play Dead) and we get some additional Eno looping trance stylistics (Watering Hole, Blue Pastures). The end result is a whiplash of musical styles and vocal offerings that are alternatively heavy and light, hopeful and resigned, passive and angry.... Sometimes all at once!

Add to these the exceptonal lyrics throughout --highlighted by the aching social commentary of "Lost a Friend" -- and you get a rare complete listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars You! Out of the gene pool!.......2002-03-11

Unlike some other listeners I did not accidently purchase this album, nor was I disappointed. Creative bands continually explore their sound, unlike some bands (ie. Bush). "Whiplash" is different than their CD's "Laid" (which was mellow) or "Millionares" (which is heavy on the synth side), this release boasts powerful guitars, classic James lyrics and a different direction. Overall this reminds me of their Gold Mother disc, which was fun and unpredictable. Their sound is unique to other releases and more resembles the extra songs from their "Best of" CD like Runaground & Destiny Calling. There is more James than Brian Eno on this disc unlike "Laid" or "Pleased to meet you" which were heavily influenced by Eno. If you like the more upbeat James you've heard check this release out. A great selection for the car by the way, especially when driving at high speeds...

5 out of 5 stars In my opinion, James' Best Album.......2001-09-20

Everyone has his own taste in music, and for that reason it's a very sebjective matter. First of all, I love James. That said, I consider this their best album because it moves me the most.

Of course, if you aren't familiar with James, I recommend The Best Of, which includes three tracks from this disc: Tomorrow, Waltzing Along, and She's a Star. One thing I've noticed about James, though, is that the songs on their albums that appear on The Best Of have a very distinct quality. And in some ways they give only a slight indication of what each album is like. On Whiplash, the other songs are wonderful and wonderfully different from those three.

Lost a Friend is by far my favorite track with it's harpsichord sounds in some parts and great guitar rifts in the others. And moving lyrics that take notice of our absorption in our televisions and the violence we see there from other parts of the world and our own militaries.

This album also seems experimental in booming bass rhythms and a dance-like quality (dance club). But that description is poor and don't let it suggest that the lyrics have suffered because of it. The new sound adds just another facet to James (one that you hear more of on Millionaires) that you don't hear on The Best Of, and perhaps wouldn't dream of hearing if you've only heard, say, Laid.

Whiplash, except perhaps for the most recent Pleased to Meet You, is James' strongest social critique. While the subject matter can be sad (or saddening)-- like a pleading mother earth (Greenpeace) or a harsh attack on what seems like a materialistic American culture that loses itself in the TV and the mall (Go to the Bank)-- this disc has elements of hope, unfortunately mixed with despair. It opens with a song urging its listeners, no matter how awful things may be, to keep holding on 'til tomorrow, but the album ends with the line "Blue Pastures fade away."

This is a good album. Some apparently disagree with me, but I consider this essential James. It's proved, to me, even more essential than The Best Of, but, of course, I'd still recommend that as the place to start for those who haven't heard of James.

2 out of 5 stars There are worse albums than this one..........2000-10-25

...but I listen to them even less! I bought this album at random a few years ago. My first impression after I bought it was "mediocre British band". I've listened to it a couple times since then, the most recent today, and my impression hasn't changed. If it weren't for the fact that Brian Eno contributed to this album I'd probably give it one star.

5 out of 5 stars Way Cool Idol.......2007-01-07

I had the cassette many years ago and decided to get the cd for my collection. After not hearing it in years it's still as hot and fresh as ever. Best Idol cd I own. Rock on!

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected and still enjoyable today.......2006-08-22

Released in 1986, this is Billy Idol's third solo album. It is 45 minutes long, being released in the era when LP's were still popular.

The sound quality is very good in an early CD technology sort of way. The dynamic range is very good and it is crystal clear. But, is has that digital sharpness that was prevelant in many early CD's. There was something unnatural about the sound. It is the reason there were vinyl snobs in the early eighties, who felt CD technology was inferior. 20 years later, the digital technology is so much better.

It could be easy to write off Billy Idol as one of the untalented fads of the early eighties and the Disco/New Wave/Punk/MTV era. He was more famous for his personna than his music.

But, it turns out that Idol was a talented performer and songwriter. He does a great mixture of punk and new wave with a little disco thrown in. At times, he is like Elvis and at times he is like Jim Morrison of the Doors.

This is a very nice collection of songs. What is unusual is that the hits, To Be A Lover and Sweet Sixteen are some of the best songs on the CD. The only complaint is that this CD is a little more polished and a little more mature than Idol's earlier work. But, then many of the song arrangements are very good.

Much of the music from the eighties sounds really dated now. But, there is enough rock and blues mixed in to make this CD still enjoyable today.

4 out of 5 stars BILLY ROCK STAR.......2006-03-04

Billy Idol's third solo album from 1986 is a worthy follow-up to the smash, "Rebel Yell", although with less sweeping majestic, and more stabbing, jerky guitar work from Steve Stevens, and drooling rock star Elvis/Gene Vincent vocals slobbering in echo overdub like a seductive drunk using his microphone stand to remain upright, while delivering homage to the Blueberry Hill wax museum, (Hey Baaabeeee!). You can almost smell the beer on his husky breath in the rock-star-in-a-shell revealed, "To Be A Lover". He grunts, screams, growls, and gets oh so Elvis baritone in the paranoid, music noir psyche destruction of "Don't Need a Gun", casually mentioning as if meaningfully delusional that, "the Russian roulette will fall", in a world where, "Johnney Ray is always crying". He sobers up for the pillow talk, languid, "Sweet Sixteen", a sweet and lingering "my little runaway" ode, and the all purpose melody and offbeat, "All Summer Single", has less to do with marital status, than it does the luxury a hit record can afford. I saw Idol recently in a 2005 concert comeback attempt, and dude, lose the snarl. That is so last century.

5 out of 5 stars Its Billy "William" Idol , COME ON.......2006-01-24

waiting so long after rebel yell , Whiplash delievers . Worlds Forgotten Boy takes off and doesnt stop. One Night ,one Chance is so menacing and the other radio hits please. So im writing this review a little late ,but, WHO CARES. While Charmed Life, his next release, is very disappointing , Cyberpunk, released after is actually satisfying. Rip it first if you dont believe me.

5 out of 5 stars Is that Elvis i hear.......2005-09-15

Yes there are a couple of these songs where Billy does his impersonation of the King. Billy is remarkable. To Be a Lover has to be my favorite Billy song of all time. When I hear that song I can see his lip quivering. What an incredible talent.

4 out of 5 stars A great follow-up to Ticket to Mayhem .......2005-05-24

So, its '89 and they're working on this album and they certainly have a few suprises. Insult to Injury is at least as good as Ticket to Mayhem, although it sounds vastly different from the latter.

Portaro's gruff vocals were replaced by Glenn Hansen, who has a distinctively higher singing voice. This gave in Portaro's words, "More time to pay attention to playing guitar."

The guitar riffs are catchier, the bass playing by Bono improved tremendously, and the songs are well written. Cangelosi comes back for drumming duty and the results are good.

It's really hard to describe what this sounds like exactly but a lot of the songs start out with a solo and then some type of break.

This album certainly did a lot to differentiate Whiplash's sound from other bands in the Genre at the time but it appears that didn't help them much case they broke up soon after this album came out.

They released two more albums that were like Sabbath meets Deep Purple and then the three originals Tony's (Bono, Portaro, Scaglione) got back together for "Thrashback" in '98. Tony Bono apparently died in '02, so no chance of a reunion. Man...

Definitely worth checking out; 4 3/4 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Took em too long for 2nd release but worth it!!!!.......2006-05-05

It's short and sweet. It has really only 3 tracks since the 3rd song is like... instumental. So if your a casual spitfire listener... it may not be worth your trouble BUT!!! If you have heard their other material and enjoy it then you have NO EXCUSE not to find it and buy it!

The first track is strong and the lyrics are great. The track title says it all "This Ain't Vegas And You Ain't Elvis". Awsome song.

Now "Bulletproof And Tall As Jesus" is my favorite on the cd and seguies nicely into "the sideshow Whiplash" which is the title track, but oddly enough is an... instumental techno/jazz/melodic piece... But together the two tracks are perfect!

The 4 short cd ends with... probably the most brutal song "Herion" which is like... if the singer is the both the drug talking and the person who needs it?...? Anywho, a solid track and very heavy!

The quality in the recording is an improvement from "dead next door" and they sound like they are more confident in their playing.

I love Spitfire and was disapointed after their cd "Dead next door" because they took so long I feared they would be no more but... this cd, and their new one, just prove that they are alive and awsome!

5 out of 5 stars Thrash metal at its fastest and most brutal.......2006-10-31

One wonders in the world of metal how extreme the form can be - sludge paced Sabbath influenced outfits like Crowbar, or a maniacal pace that verges on total breakdown yet keeps its refinement intact. Early thrashers like Exodus and Metallica invented this extreme offshoot of metal and as incredible as it may seem, did not claim the fastest crown. That accolade would probably go to Whiplash.
Obviously speed alone won't earn a band the crown. There has to be some chops going on, too, and the "Triple Tonys" deliver. This two-CD compilation is difficult to find but worth the chase. "Power & Pain" is slightly muddier mix-wise than its follow-up "Ticket To Mayhem" but it still sounds fine. The tempos are superhuman, the growling vocals like that of a castrated jaguar, and the guitars slice and dice like a chainsaw factory.
This music somewhat blurs the line between thrash and speedcore. Fans of Agnostic Front will dig this music, as will Ironchrist fans. It's unrelenting and pure. As one Creem magazine writer stated, and I paraphrase, "if you like your coffee black and your whiskey straight, Whiplash is your band." Nobody who considers Scorpions or Bon Jovi heavy need to apply here. It's metal for the truly faithful and has no sympathy for wimps.

5 out of 5 stars Two Classics here!.......2005-05-24

Since I have the original two albums on (Roadracer) separate CDs, I'll review them that way.

If you weren't part of the speed metal/thrash scene in the eighties than listening to this album will not give you the full effect of what this album is like. Back in '87 there were so many Thrash albums coming out, it was hard to tell what was good from what was standard or bad quality. Whiplash never made it: 1)because they were from New Jersey; 2)Roadracer failed to pay them for any of their (3) albums.

      -Power and Pain-

It's generally a good album with the guitar work standing out the most. Tony, Tony and...Tony make some good music here that has the usual speed metal tempo for '85 while songs like "Nailed to the Cross" change tempo a little bit.

The drums are pretty standard but that was actually this bands main attraction back in the day. Tony Scaglione was most famous not for his drumming here but -and anybody who saw them in '86-'87 would know this- for being the Slayer drummer for the Reign in Blood tour while Dave was off gettin' married. Nevertheless, the drumming fits.

The bass work is alright, there are some cool fills. Apparently Bono died in '02 of a heart attack -rest in peace.

But the guitar work and vocal growl is the most standout thing about this band. The guitars are Megadeth/Metallicesque -hey they named themselves based on a song of Kill 'em All- but unique altogether. The high harmonics placed in between the muted open Es are killer.

Favorite songs are "Spit on your Grave", "Nailed to the Cross".

      -Ticket to Mayhem-

One of the best Thrash Metal albums ever, and for me that's saying a lot (got hundreds if not thousands including demo tapes).

Tony Cangelosi fills in on the drums and makes quite an entrance on "Walk the Plank". He has good fills and a little bit speedier drumming than Scaglione but his style is entirely different. Best work is on the snare high-high snare change-up on "Walk the Plank".

Portaro's guitars are wailing with the heavy riffs and the crazy constant slides up and down the fretboard. Bono's bass is heavy and keeps it all together. Overall this album has more tempo changeups than the first and for this reason it is my favorite.

Favorite songs "Drowning in Torment", "Eternal Eyes", and "Snake Pit" (Used to play Nintendo's Pitfall to this one).

5 out of 5 stars 2 THRASH CLASSICS ON ONE DISC !!!.......2003-10-14

WHIPLASH is one of my all time favorite thrash bands, and they should have been huge. Top of the line musicianship from all three Tonys in the band (Portaro,Bono,Scaglione) and a tight and heavy thrash/speed sound. Portaro,in particular,is one of the best guitarists in this style of music ever, in my opinion. Plus his gut wrenching and shrill sounding vocals (not the over used and eventually ridiculous growling vocals of some "Death metal" bands trying to sound heavy or evil) made it all the better. Not only were the songs fast and heavy, but had almost memorable "hooks" for lack of a better word. "Last Man Alive", "Spit on your Grave" and "Nailed to the Cross" are all classics, but the whole LP is awesome. "Ticket to Mayhem" takes over where the first LP started, just as fast, heavy and tight."Snakepit" "Burning of Atlanta" and "Respect the Dead" are brilliant thrash pieces. Both of these are must haves for your collection. Much more talented than some of their counterparts who got big. Awesome stuff....

      5 out of 5 stars A Classic Thrash Release..........2003-02-01

Raw and catchy, "Power And Pain" would be a great addition to the collection of any fan of the old school thrash scene. There is a tiny dash of hardcore fused into the sound, but not enough to toss Whiplash out of the thrash metal category. Great sing-along choruses are the strong point on this release, especially on tracks like "Last Man Alive". Although some may disagree, I feel that "Ticket To Mayhem" (the second album on this two-album collection) is the weaker of the two efforts, and just doesn't showcase the charm of "Power and Pain". Thus, the five star rating is actually for the "Power and Pain" album. Overall, this is a worthy release, and any thrash metal fan would certainly appreciate it.

      5 out of 5 stars Must Have 80's Metal.......2002-08-24

Any fan of true metal will appreciate this combination of albums. Overlooked by the mainsteam label fan during metal's peak when they came out, they're borderline thrash, speed and power metal. I'm not going to go song by song with the review, screeching vocals, lightining guitar riffs and bombastic drums should sum it up for these guys. I prefer "Ticket To Mayhem", which is one of those rare albums where you don't need to fastforward while listening because every song stands on it's own. If you liked early Overkill, Testament or Anthrax you will enjoy this combination of albums.
