Good Stuff.......2001-02-01
What a tribute! It took a large collection of some of the most accomplished and influential musicians in the world to capture the joy, energy and sheer magic of Van Halen! This was a thrill to listen to!! Some high points, (for me personally) were the vocals on Atomic Punk and I'm the One! Vocals on I'm the One were phenomenal!! Guitars on those those tracks were incredible...I couldn't help but grin throughout I'm the One. Ok, on to the slam.... Disgust is probably the first word that comes to mind when I think of Light Up the Sky. While the Lead vocals were good, actually I really dug the phrasing and personal style of the lead vocals, the background vocals were ATROCIOUS!! They were really quite off mark as far as key goes. Nothing like the original and certainly did Michael no justice as the incredibly underrated-vocalist that he is.... 'nuff said. The opening track Unchained was cool. Guitars sounded really good, right down to the phaser/flange setting. Real cool.
Would have really liked to have heard someone try Mean Streets or Sinners Swing. All in all, even w/ the stomach churning rape job of Light Up The Sky, I would highly reccomend this cd to any Van Halen fan. I don't have the cd in front of me, but I'm quite shocked that whoever produced the cd let the artists (Light Up the Sky) out of the vocal booth after the background vocal track...let alone allow it to appear on the cd. Everyone else..SUPER KUDOS, job exquisitely done!
Finally, a worthy tribute!.......2000-11-11
Finally, someone pulled together the right talent to compile this tribute to the greatest hard rock band of all time. The musicians are a "who's who" of 80's and 90's rock, representing Kiss, Motley Crue, Rainbow, Great White, Slaughter, Ratt, Night Ranger, Quiet Riot, David Lee Roth Band, etc... The album opens with Dweezil Zappa doing a very credible cover of one of my EVH favorites - "Unchained", followed by Doug Aldrich CRANKING on "I'm the One". (Doug gets the award for best Eddie-clone). Other great solos contributed by Yngwie Malmsteen, Bruce Kulick and an excellent flamenco intro by Mitch Perry. Two sad spots - bassist extrordinaire Billy Sheehan is underutilized on "Lighting up the Sky", and none of these players had the guts to cover "Mean Street". (Not to mention why "Nelson" is on here, and why are they doing a cover of a cover tune??) Eric Singer gets my vote for best drummer. The singers' renditions range from "interesting" to very good. Jeff Scott Soto gets the award for best DLR scream during "So this is Love?". The overall talent level here is so good, it makes you realize how stellar the real VH is. (Someday we'll get a new album with the original lineup!) If you're a big VH fan AND want to hear how the Mighty VH influenced these top notch musicians - buy this album.
