Underkill.......2007-01-16
Overkill's "The Killing Kind" is easily the worst album that Overkill has done (second to WFO) and I have a feeling that Overkill fans will be displeased with this slop. I has slowly been getting back into this band, and I have been pleased with most of their albums since the "Glory Days" of "Horrorscope". I cant tell you how much I hated this album when I first listened to it, and after many spins, it just isn't getting any better. The thing that I noticed the most on this album is that Overkill really pulled away from their "Thrash Sound" and made a more technical album. Sometimes this works with some metal bands such as the likes of Obituary's "World Demise" which is a Outstanding CD, or even Anthrax's "The Sound of White Noise" When it comes to Overkill trying to pull this off, it sounds like a nightmare. I almost gave this a one star effort, but there are a few tracks on this that are pretty decent. "Certifiable", "Feeding Frenzy", and "Cold Hard Fact" are good songs, but thats about it. Even though those songs still have a feel of Thrash to them, they still dont sound like something that I expect from "Overkill" Since Overkill has been in the buiness since 1985, and this is the only album that they released that I thought was horrid, thats not to damn bad, so I can cut them a break. With so many other great albums in their catalogue, why even try this one when you have so much to choose from.
thrash gods almost make another masterpiece.....almost.......2006-06-19
while i see some of my fellow reviewers have given this gem a 5 star rating, i feel it may be a 4-4.5. i am a huge Overkill fan, and have every release they have ever put forth, but a 5 is a tough standard to live up to, and i don't give them out that often. having owned over 2,000 hard and metal cds in my life, i would give maybe 80 of those a 5. which is like saying something (or someone) is a 10. however, there is a reason a used metal cd from '96 is still commanding over $7; because it is very good, and worth every penny. this cd has what we love about Overkill from the '80's, but recorded and engineered in the '90's, so no more hollow, bass-less recording sessions. great lyrics as usual, and outstanding musicianship once again from the guys from Jersey. every tune is worth spinnin'. you will definitely not be disappointed by spending the coin on this one. check it out. check out my other reviews to see which cds you should own. s.d.m.f. peace.
A great album from thrash metal originators..........2005-08-04
This is a great CD that slips every once and a while but manages to stay pretty awesome. My only gripes with this CD is that Mourning After/ Private Bleeding should have been dropped off the album and the obnoxious "yeahs" in Battle should have been dropped too. Though, the rest of the album is just plain awesome and will keep you energetic. I mean almost all the tracks are awesome... I mean despite one minor problem with Battle the song was an awesome opener. Next, God-Like and Certifiable are just two straight up thrashers that will keep you entertained. Now in Burn You Down/To Ashes we have an awesome song that for a few minutes has a soft song structure that keeps buliding until the song kicks in thrashing...I'll repeat... awesome. The tracks that follow this song are once again thrashing songs that will get you moving. Ok, so now onto Mourning After/Private Bleeding and I'll have t admit that this song is terrible. I can't believe that the song was even on such an otherwise awesome CD. It just reminds me that not everyone is perfect. Cold Hard Fact...is an awesome closer that deserves to be on this CD and will almost totally eclipse the dissapointment featured on the previous song. So, with that being said...this CD just plain rocks and was another cool/entertaining listen from Overkill.
Gets the job done.......2005-02-09
This album is a little weird. 'W.F.O.' was pure, straight thrash from beginning to end, but here, just one album later, we get a mix of stuff, with thrash and groove thrash and some ballads and some dirgey stuff and an unusually sludgy sound to the whole thing. The songwriting isn't as compelling as on 'Years of Decay' or 'Horrorscope' but it's still pretty decent, and it's got the variety and ingenuity to make it more than worth while.
The first 3 tracks are pretty much thrashers. A little groovier at times, with somewhat less choppy, thrashy riffs, at times, but still basically thrash. They ain't as good as 'Elimination' or 'Live Young, Die Free' or some other classics but they're good, solid Overkill songs. Most people seem to like 'Battle' best, but I go for 'God-Like' myself. It's probably the fastest, most energetic thing here, with a nifty, kinda rasp-growled chorus. 'Burn You Down/To Ashes' is a dirgey track. Pretty decent, not all that memorable, but still reasonably interesting. 'Let Me Shut That For You' is basically a thrasher as well, though the groove level increases. It's an attempt at your edgy-jokey-agressive Overkill song a la 'I Hate', and it works pretty well. Lotsa gang vox, naturally. Not brilliant, but it works. 'Bold Face Pagan Stomp' further heightens the groove level, but it's still a kickass song. Stomp is right, but still pretty catchy, and with some riffs that actually sound decent, rather than just having a lot of groove. 'Feeding Frenzy' is an instrumental, and it's awesome.(Man, I wish more metal bands would do instrumentals) Pretty dynamic, with lots of sweet, off the wall bass playing and some truly fierce rhythm guitar work. Nice drumming too, just a solid track all around. 'The Cleansing' is another dirge, rather than a groove number, and it's quite good. Better than 'Burn You Down'. The vox get a little weird at times, but it's actually pretty energetic for this sorta thing, and the immense, doomy riffs never fail to impress. And, the closing section is different, if nothing else. 'The Mourning After/Private Bleeding' is/are a ballad. It was a little weird at first, what with the piano and synths and all, but it's another good track. Nice melody and atmosphere, and a good change of pace, for sure. It's got a genuinely mournful feel to it, as it ought to. Kinda like `Soulitude' from a tone standpoint, anyway. 'Cold, Hard Fact' is a fitting, odd ending which combines lots of elements from the rest of the album with a real slow doom riff appearing now and then in between some groove thrash and true thrash riff work, along with some more melodic, less raspy vox.(At times, anyway.) Once again, pretty good. Fun, catchy, unexpected, and all that.
In the end, this album is rarely all that great, but everything is pretty good, at least. It's perhaps not as solid on a song to song basis as 'W.F.O.', but that album was a little too monotonous and too much of a retread. Some sort of innovation was needed, and they found it, while still writing solid songs. Another worthwhile release from Overkill.
"Why Do You Question The Good Of Your Choice...".......2002-10-05
This is Overkill's eighth studio album and came out in March 1996. It also marked the debuted of the new guitar team of Joe Comeau and Sebastian Marino, who replaced Rob Cannivino and Merrit Gant, who left the previous summer. The album kicks off with the stomper "Battle" and the energy is raised to an even higher level on "God-Like" which was a highlight when I got to see the Killing Kind tour twice in 1996!! I wish they would bring this song back into the live set. "Certifiable" is exactly what the title suggest, pure insanity!! The highlight for me is the next song, "Burn You Down / To Ashes", a seven minute epic that startes off very melodic with great vocals and lyrics from Blitz and D.D. Verni's classic bass riffs, then slowly builds as each verse comes in. By the middle part it approaches thrash territory and we are treated to some great trade-off solos before crashing to a complete halt, then ending with some great melodic guitar parts, much the same way it started. Another highlight live that year!!! "Let Me Shut That For You" has a good sing-along chorus, and "Bold Face Pagan Stomp" is a great mid-tempo stomper, one that has to be played very loud to feel!! "Feeding Frenzy" is another personal favorite, a killer instrumental that fools you, as it goes from mellow to blood-curdling guitar shredding in no time at all!! "The Cleansing" and "Private Bleeding" are a bit more mellow than the rest of the album, but still quality songs, then we get "Cold, Hard Fact" a good mid-tempo heavy tune to end this album. These days, "Battle" is the only tune from this album to still be played live, but as I said earlier, I wish they would bring back "God-Like" and "Burn You Down / To Ashes" as they were both incredible when I saw this tour. Another highly recommended Overkill disc to all my fellow metal fiends!!!

Street Rock n Roll / Oi!.......2006-01-03
1st off, yes this is not a band w/ 'jake e lee' in it. Why would someone review this album simply based on the fact that its not what they thought it is. If this genius knew anything about music, he wouldn't be surprised to find that there are bands out there that have the same name as another band. I'm sure if they'd ever heard of the second rate metal wash up blues band that you speak of they would have reconsidered their name.
As far as this band goes. This band is from Holland. They play a brand of street rock n roll that is similar to the beltones. Vocally they are different than most other bands in this genre. This guy can actually sing! Worth checking out. Another good album by them is 'hands of time'.
This is NOT the Badlands w/Jake E. Lee.......2005-03-01
I was surprised to find a new Badlands album -- only to discover that it is NOT the "bluesy hard-rock" band that I know and dig. I didn't even listen to the album: I opened it, saw a bunch of Swedish names and pictures of skinhead musicians -- definitely NOT Jake E. Lee -- and returned it! I don't know how this band is able to use the Badlands name, but if you're looking for Badlands w/Jake, this is NOT it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Over Kill is killing over and over again.......2001-02-08
After listening to amazing works such as I hear black and W.F.O and the subsequent Wrecking your neck live, Over Kill brings us one of their greatest works ever, comparable with master pieces such as under the influence, the years of decay and i hear black; The Killing Kind brings a band craving for their roots, and we will listen to a variety of sounds ranging from punk to trash all mixed with their awesome speed and the voice of the one and only Bobby "blitz" Gustaffson. Completely and totally recomended.
