Guns N' Roses' career could be neatly summed up in a lyric from their song "Pretty Tied Up": "I just found a million dollars that someone else forgot." Indeed, GNR satisfied a grassroots public hunger for bigger-than-life hard rock at a time when legions of alternative bands were enjoying their first burst of overweening critical attention and commercial cachet. The last and most spectacularly successful band to prosper from Hollywood's burgeoning 1980s Sunset Strip glam-metal scene wrapped a couple decade's worth of sometimes tired clichés around a tight, assaultive musical attack that enticed millions yearning for poor role models. And if their edgy songs often blurred fantasy and reality, the best of them had a street-level honesty that couldn't be denied. A de facto greatest-hits collection culled from performances recorded around the world, Live Era best documents the early, ferocious performing prime of GNR's original quintet on its first disc, leaning heavily on their landmark Appetite for Destruction album to great effect. But the second volume often chronicles the band's steady decline into bloated self-parody and neo-Vegas "professionalism." This band needs a horn section like Slash needs another drink! --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
A Great Live Album for a misunderstood band....(4.5 Stars).......2006-08-03
I wasn't old enough to go see GnR when they were together, but after listening to this album numerous times, I really wish I had got to see them. The energy level at their shows was legendary and this is evident in these songs even thought they are taken from a period of 7 years. Surprisingly, the musicianship is much better than I thought it would. Slash's style and speed was fantastic and these guys were not just straight guitar rockers. They had a full-blown production in their later years with piano, horns and backup singers. I particularly liked the jammed out version of Knockin On Heaven's Door.
It's funny to think all the five GnR heavy hitters (Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, November Rain, and Don't You Cry Tonight) are all slowly making their way into classic rock rotations and there is probably a decent amount of younger people out there that haven't hear much of them. This double CD showcases some of their other great songs like KHD, Patience, My Michelle, and Nightrain.
I had some great live bootlegs from a Japanese concert that have been floating around the internet for years. The sound quality and is bit better then those but nothing to really write home about.
Bottom Line: For the casual fan the only GnR album you really need.
A LIVE CLASSIC!!.......2006-06-12
This album, with all its mystery (recorded all over the universe-when? where? what line up? ) came well after the fact and first off serves to remind us that this was (is?) one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Every song is top shelf and even as a two disc live set, leaves many of the classic tracks off, in itself a testament to the quality of the material this band produced.
As a live album it serves well the legacy of their performances that were always memorable if not classic.
All in all, an incredible album and a must for any rock fans collection
Great GNR Live Set.......2006-06-10
In their lifespan of jsut over seven years, Guns N' Roses managed to become one of the best bands ever. With their 1987 debut "Appetite For Destruction", they managed to create one of the greatest albums ever made. Their two follow ups, 1988's "Lies" and their 1991 double cd "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" were solid efforts as well. However, by 1993, due msotly to the behavior of their increasingly self destructive lead singer Axl Rose, Guns N' Roses called it quits. However, their fans still remember them and even today they are still acquiring new fans.
Anyone who lived with Guns N' Roses at their peak (unfortunately, I was two and a half when they split) knwos that they were one of, if not the, best live acts around. They always put on an amazing, energetic show and all their fans left happy.
This two disc set, "Live Era: '87 - '93" captures Guns N' Roses live throughout their seven year run. You get heart pouding, blood pumping live versions of their biggest hits, including "Welcome To The Jungle", "Sweet Child O' Mine", "November Rain" and "Paradise City". You also get to hear some of their lesser known material such as "Yesterdays", "Rocket Queen", "Used To Love Her", "Estranged" and "Patience".
For the most part, all of the performances are solid and energetic. If you are a big Guns N' Roses fan, then I think you'd be very happy with this album.
Not Perfect, But Best Yet.......2006-05-11
Well. It's hard to believe that it's already been more than 7 years since I bought this CD in 1999. Since then, it was always one of my favorite live performance CD so far. Probably it's because there are undeniable reasons in spite of a couple of weak points.
As the title of this CD [Live Era 87-93], it was only 7 years in the history that GN'R showed us their performance. Those days was one of the most exciting years ; thrilling, powerful, and exciting rock band ruled the world, not only US but also Europe, Asia, South America.. all over the world. I don't remember when it was the last time that we has a band like them; maybe only few exception is just U2 & Metallica. But one thing is sure - since the 90's there wasn't much time that we had such a real fun as we watched GN'R. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, RATM... OK, they are all pretty good bands. But I always looked for GN'R's CD when I'm tired of their music. Why? Because I felt I need something more rocking and it was GN'R. And this CD has what I need; it was Rock And Roll.
First off, this CD has pretty decent sellection even though I wish there were a couple of songs I like personally. I can't complain too much. But one song, 'Coma' only in Japanese edition is a real hidden gem. Don't miss it.
Sencondly, one weak point is too varied. Maybe this is a inevitable choice between a live CD which is selected from 1 or 2 good concert, or compilation of various performances. AXL chose the second one just like the title from their early days in 1987 to the last good days with original members SLASH & DUFF in 1993. And it made this CD set weak in the matter of concentration. Honestly, I prefer the first choice as a Fan, their legendary lives like Ritz in 1988, Monsters Of Rock 1988, or Rio in 1991. So I wish AXL release one more complete concert as DVD or CD sets. (I know there's not much chance for that, except bootlegs.) And I think it'd be better if there's some simple comments for each tracks like "Date/Place/Members".
In conclusion, this CD set is not perfectly satisfactory to me due to the standard of making, but I had no doubt about the quality itself.
Sweet!!!.......2006-04-23
This is one kickass live compilation. Most of the greats by the bad boys from LA are here LIVE! GN'R is one of the best live bands and with this you don't have to worry about if Axl shows up or not. The only song that I miss is "Civil War" if that would have been included it would have been perfect. Also the locations and dates for every performance would have been nice but what you gonna do eh?
