What distinguishes these recordings from other live recordings is that these recordings were actually made with microphones placed in the audience, so there is a real feeling of being right there in the club with glasses clanking and audience responses, rather than the more sterile sound of a "board mix".
The set list features some Gatton repetoire standbys such as "Harlem Nocturne" two very different versions (one which features a cameo by the late Dick Heintze on Hammond Organ), "Fingers On Fire", Nit Pickin'", "Canadian Sunset" and two scorching renditions of "Sweet Georgia Brown" as well as obscure songs like Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce" and two Blues numbers: the slow blues "Danny's Blues" and the shuffle "Walkin' With Danny".

Always the Greatest!!.......2007-05-14

This is a Levon Helm entry that I missed somewhere along the way. Levon is, without a doubt, one of the great VOICES and DRUMMERS in the history of Rock 'n Roll. His style and presentation of almost thirty years ago is as good as ever and he has not lost his touch, even to this date!!
This CD is a bargain at twice the price! A MUST have for any collection.

Some Darn Good Music!.......2007-05-12

Let's face it, bands don't make music like this anymore. This is old time rock, blues, and R&B. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this is. The recording has top notch sound and performances. It's worth the price alone for Paul Buterfield's harp blowing. All star bands usually don't work out so well, but this one is definetly the exception.

Levon Helm and RCO AllStars Live at the Palladium NYC, NEw Years Eve 1977- Bringin' in a great 78........2006-05-15

It was with much anticipation that I purchased this disc. I have always loved the Band, and I think Levon had one of the greatest voices in "Rock and Blues" music. He makes you believe it when he sings it! He is also one of the all time best drummers in the genre. Any band that includes Levon Helm, Paul Butterfield, "Duck" Dunn, Dr. John, Howard Johnson, etc. is bound to be good.

I think this disc does a much better job than the original studio release (Levon Helm and the RCO AllStars) of allowing the talent of this band to shine through. The addition of some traditional blues tunes (Born in Chicago, Got My Mojo WOrkin, Goddnight Irene) and "Ophelia" from Levon's days in the Band add to the flavor of the original studio recording. The tunes from the original disc sound better in live setting, particularly "Milk Cow Boogie," "Blues so Bad" and "Sing, Sing Sing." Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars are a monster band live, yet they are able to play together as a cohesive unit. It is obvious that this band was about playing music together, leaving their egos at the door.

For some good-time music, buy this disc. Levon Helm Studios managed to pick an inaguaral "vault" release that packages a whole lot of soul into a small container. I can't wait to hear their next release!

The title says it all.......2002-02-08

Stanley Clarke is simply the greatest bassist to have ever graced the earth with his presence. There are many other great ones(Manring,Wooten,Hamm,Jaco,etc.) but one thing that separates Stanley from the others is his compositional skills. The disc doesn't have a version of his suites but it captures all of the diversity that Stanley and his bandmates unleash during a show. The opener is "School Days". The form is the same as on the disc of the same name but live it is taken to another energy level. Ray Gomez lets loose and then Stanley defies the physical limitations that a person has. The speed and clarity is unreal. Then he cuts loose with some slap. The horn section gives this song even more power. More of Stanley's ability to bring out the funk are "Lopsy-Lu" and "Silly Putty". Anyone that plays bass should take notes on how the instrument should be played. The bass lines on these songs are two lessons in how to be funky. Stanley grooves on both tunes and the horn section is present again on "Silly Putty". "Lopsy Lu" finds Stanley exchanging fours with his bandmates. There is also an example of Clarke's acoustic grace on "Bass Folk Song". The piece is a duet with Stanley and his keyboardist. No one can play the upright like Stanley can. The same virtuosity that he displays on electric bass he has on an acoustic. The ability to play electric and acoustic with equal awe inspiration is another thing that separates Stanley from the rest. Also included on the disc are two RTF covers. "Dayride" features Jerry Brown on drums. "The Magician" is the other RTF tune and although the tune lacks Dimeola it is still phenomenal. No one has taken Jazz/Rock/ Funk/Fusion to greater heights than Stanley. His writing is a refection of his schooling and his Coltanesque sheets-of-sound bass technique is a revelation. The bottom line is this. If you are a bass player or you appreciate anyone that can take their instrument to unmatched heights then get this. It is the greatest one from the greatest one.

Fantastic!.......2001-01-22

This is one the greatest bassists ever in his prime. A MUST HAVE for all Stanley Clarke fans. A great supplement to the I Wanna Play For You album. I bought this so I could hear The Magician and he even plays it faster and with just as much accuracy as the Return To Forever version! Awesome work from Ray Gomez and Gerry Brown. The engineering is clear with great dynamic range and LOTS of bass from Stanley. An essential recording for bassists who wanna hear how to be a leader onstage

Time Travel.......2006-05-16

Okay, the reviews are either 1 or 5. I give it a four because I bought it, ignored it on my iPod for almost a year, and have listened to it three times all the way through in the last 24 hours.

It is loud, sloppy, bratty and at times great. It is the definition of the whole DIY punk thing, like The Mekons first album (different for sure but with the same attitude). You can hear bits of pieces of trashy metal, Bowie, etc. Suicide Machine is my favorite track, but the insults, hurled bottles and trash are all there as well.

I love the Germs, but really..........2006-02-21

OK, let`s get one thing straight. The Germs are one of my favorite punk bands ever, and I really like their music, as they recorded some of the best stuff the L.A -scene had to offer. But really, can anyone say that they like listening to this album? Admit it, the Germs were pretty disasterous as a live group. I`m not saying this about the band, in their last active years (circa 1979-80) the band was a tight gang, and everyone knew how to play their instruments. But even in their "heyday" (can you say that about the Germs anyway?) their live shows were a complete mess. For God`s sake, Darby had to consume a crapload of drugs to perform! And if Darby was the reason that their live shows were a train wreck in their best days, this one, this album was recorded in 1977. That was when the Germs couldn`t even play. Add to that the wasted performance by Darby (in the time of this album, Bobby Pyn) and you`ve got yourself a very, very bad live album.

If you`re a fanatic Germs -fan, then I assume you already have this, but really. For a band this self-destructive and short-lived, all you need is the essential (MIA) The Complete Anthology. It has almost everything they recorded, plus a couple live tracks.

One star for the music, but..........2005-03-20

...five for pure atmosphere. This is not the band that would later record "Germs(GI)"; this is four kids screwing around, having fun. There are hints of talent in songs like 'Forming' and 'Let's Pretend', but most of the set is a mess. Still, the importance of the moment that "Germicide" documents--the infancy of America's most influential punk scene--cannot be diminished. For a frightening contrast(and I'm not using "frightening" in a hyperbolic way), listen to this CD and then watch the documentary "The Decline of Western Civilization" in which the late-period Germs appear. It will give you an idea of the dark depths plumbed on the L.A. punk scene in the space of two and a half years.

Museum disc?.......2005-01-01

As one reviewer noted, this album about sums up the punk 'philosophy' that anyone can put together a band. And indeed, this sounds like anyone did put together a band and got booked at the Whiskey.

The value here is basically historical--early Germs, early punk, lots of attitude, absolutely unlistenable at times, etc. The band is not, er, polished, and the audience is rowdy. The result is an album you won't be popping in regularly.

As a punk 'document', it's of mild interest. The MIA collection is the set to get for this brief band, whose singer had the misfortune of dying right before John Lennon, thus losing all chances of 'fame'.

The sloppiest late 70's punk you'll ever hear.......2004-06-12

The Germs aren't particularly famous, but they have a decent underground rep. Guitar, Bass, Drums, Singer, no production, antagonistic audience, sounds like the audience is drunk and tha band has a hangover. They goof on "Sugar,Sugar" and "Grand old flag", with 8 other originals. They sound as if they have practiced, since they are all on the same page, but the beats and tunings are lost (most often by lead singer Bobby Pin, later to be called Darby Crash), so they probably practiced for a week (the firast time any of them picked up their instruments) and then took two weeks off before this show. If "Anyone can do it!" is the punk motto, than this is the ultimate punk album, since it sounds like not only did just anyone do it, they didn't even try. I can honestly say I've never heard a garage band sound any worse than this, and rarely this bad. That's what makes this so extreme, and gets it 5 stars. It's the real deal. One Warning, though: the lyrics of the originals show at least some measure of literary talent, hate to disappoint, but nothing is perfect.Not fear, you can barely understand them, so don't let it bother you.
This band would quickly evolve into a thrash/hardcore outfit, before fizzling, but you won't find anything that sounds like that stuff here-well, except those garbled vocals. Guitarist Pat Smear became almost a star when he did some stuff with Nirvana in the 90's. Belinda Carlisle and Rodney Binginhimer introduce the band. Funniest moment is when someone in the audience screams for PEN-A-CIL-UN!

Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever changing line-up between 1975 and 1983, when Blackmore broke up the group to join the re-formed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.

kickin' live set from the Dio days........2007-07-25

This show is, for the most part, really energetic and really great. Comparing this to the Dusseldorf 1976 recording, these are the main differences I can hear:

1) Kill the King is WAY more aggressive here. Faster, louder, heavier, and Dio's vocals sound better.
2) Ritchie's soloing is more inspired here. Mistreated benefits greatly from this, and even his diddling around before 16th Century Greensleeves and Catch the Rainbow gets the audience clapping along.
3) Catch the Rainbow is a little too up-and-down, though this may be partially because it's 17 and a half minutes. After the verses are out of the way, the band seems to go through cycles of catching fire and really sounding great for a few minutes and then suddenly sounding lost for a bit.
4) Long Live Rock 'n' Roll has replaced Stargazer. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great and Dio really gets the crowd into it, but still...would it have killed them to have put Stargazer in and trimmed down Still I'm Sad (which goes over 25 minutes) and/or the encore of Do You Close Your Eyes (almost 10 minutes)?
5) Still I'm Sad suffers from the same affliction that Catch the Rainbow does: it's a bit too long for its own good. Again, the band wanders in some places. Cozy's 1812 Overture drum solo is excellent.

I also own the Munich DVD and there are a few things to note. First, Dio's chatter with the audience is almost completely edited out, as is the introductory clip from "Wizard of Oz" with the "over the rainbow..." thing. Personally, I like to hear that kind of stuff. Maybe it wasn't feasible to have that and still keep the show in proper running order on 2 CDs. Whatever. Also, when Dio comes in very faintly on Do You Close Your Eyes (I think it's the first verse), it's not because the mic cuts out. It's because he sings into Bob Daisley's mic instead of his! Watch on the DVD and you'll see him with a "what the hell?" look before he realizes what's going on and gets his mic back.

All in all, this is a good release that no Dio or Rainbow fan should be without...and if you're a Deep Purple fan with no exposure to Rainbow, you should check it out as well.

Every line-up of the Richie Blackmore group Rainbow had their own special songs and styles, but it was the Ronnie James Dio fronted version that was the most memorable. This album captured the group at their finest. Dio vocals are thunderous and powerful, and Blackmore is equally as divine. Richie hogs the spotlight from time to time with his endulgent fretwork. Although only eight songs are listed on this double CD set, a lot of them are medlies of some of their most memoriable hits.

excellent.......2007-01-27

This release is much better than I expected in all espects. The sound and picture quality is very good. The xtras are a real hoot, a couple interviews with past band members and three promotional videos (all looked to be shot on the same day) that are a very nice addition. RB, as we find out, barely makes the show after being released from jail in Austria, thus making the band very late taking the stage, even Dio alludes to it during the show (..the late hour. The band's setlist is short but has many long performances and Blackmore's guitar is on fire, he really kicks out the jams here. The rest of the band is very tight. I was a bit worried that the 1977 performance would be dark, grainy and sound poor, but you gotta hand it to the German crew, they did a masterful job getting this set down on film. Good job. Feel safe in making this purchase.

Uneven..........2007-01-27

Indeed, after listening carefully to this release, I have to say that "Live in Munich" is uneven at best, if not plainly disappointing. Being a major Rainbow fan (especially Dio era), I eagerly expected this to be far and beyond the "Live in Germany 76" album, which, regardless of what critics might say, is a great set. Even more so now! Now I understand why Rainbow scholars kept saying that the "Rising" lineup was the best one!

I never fully agreed with that since "Long Live R n' R" is my favorite Rainbow album, although I could probably aknowlege that "Rising" is their strongest album. But after listening to this...well...First: we only get one new song, the title track of the (at the time) upcoming release, but the tradeoff is not a good one, `cause we lose "Stargazer", without a doubt, the crown jewel of Rainbow's catalog. The rest of the songs are the same, although the length of the versions varies greatly, "Mistreated" being dramatically shorter (some 6 minutes shorter than the version off "Germany `76") and "Still am sad" dramatically longer (surpassing the 25 minute mark).

That being said, I feel that the new versions lack the punch of the previous release, and I'm not quite sure why: I mean, the backbone of the band (Blackmore-Dio-Powell) is the same, the songs are the same...the new guys...well yeah, they're new, but it's hard for me to accept that just `cause of new bass and keyboard players a band can lose so much strength but...apparently it can...and additionally, the show had sound flaws! During "Do you close your eyes", Dio's microphone goes dead after the solo, so an entire verse goes instrumental. You can faintly hear him, but for all intents and purposes, the song gets screwed up.

This release's biggest disappointment (other than the set list...but we knew that one going in...) it's that it fails to offer anything really worthy of recognition. Why, instead of playing 25 minute versions of some songs, not include a few of the many other shorter ones in Rainbow's catalog, such as "Run With the Wolf"? And no, I'm not counting the rather loose jam they have with "Starstruck" (one of my favorite Rainbow songs), which is absolutely dreadful as far as I'm concerned. What? That this is supposed to be symphonic rock, you say? Oh, rubbish!!! No wonder why punk got so big! Am I being too harsh? Being a huge fan, I asked myself that question but...in the end, I remembered that, until listening to "Germany `76", I didn't really like "Stargazer". That record smoked, this one doesn't.

Bottom line: if you, like me, are a Rainbow freak, you'll probably want to pick this one up. If not, and you're a looking for an introduction to live Rainbow, my advice is to stick with the "Germany `76" set, or the recently released individual concerts from that German tour. Pity...

Blackmore, Powell & Dio At Their Best.......2007-01-06

This is a fantastic show. I've had unofficial copies of this show for years and they truly did a great job on the transfer. The bonus videos are a major plus too. This is Rainbow at their peak with Ronnie Dio and the late great Cozy Powell on drums. I still get chills when I hear the live version of Catch The Rainbow. It really shows how versatile Dio could be at times. Cozy tears it up and his drum solo is amazing to say the least. The only downside IMO is Blackmore breaking his guitar at the end of the show. He should've just left those types of antics to The Who. Buy it, it's well worth it!

Allow me to quote from the liner notes:

"Despite constant jockeying for the domineering musical position by each member of the band, resulting as it did, in mass overplaying of the most heinous, self centered manner, and not withstanding the excoriating cancerous vocal style I employed (reviewers note: THAT'S WHAT HE SOUNDS LIKE-LIKE HE HAS A CHOICE) devoid of subtlety, nuance and all the other qualities of finesse I deem more important today, GP and the Rumour still manage somehow to coalesce into a full blooded whole some nights of the year that defied gravity, overshadowing shortcomings, and at times made us sound like the most vital rock 'n roll band on the planet."

That about summarizes my opinion of this album - an album as full of bombast as the excerpt above.

It is a loud rock album if you just sort of let it play, but if you listen closely it is something you warm up to, as if, as stated in the quote above, the band sometimes really gels. On this album they seem really in a groove.

Sounding a little like a drunk Elvis Costello, GP and friends really rip through a bunch of songs that all sort of sound the same, and they all sort of sound great.

Oh, and this CD contains, like, the 52nd different version of "Mercury Poisoning." Not a bad thing, really.

Live Is Just Fine!.......2001-03-08

This album is uniformly excellent, a surprisingly consistent effort, especially since it was cobbled together from live appearances spanning 14 years. Listening to it, you could be convinced it was from a single tour, no small compliment. All the songs sound great, especially the two tracks from his later, more tepid albums. As a fan, it's a treat to get some great live albums since GPs studio efforts have been relatively disappointing since THE MONA LISA'S SISTER, indeed, he may be the only artist who makes live albums that are better than his studio efforts. The fact that his later songs sound better live implies that GPs problem of late has been his devotion to studio perfection. Parker is a basic rock n roller, the kind of straight ahead artist whose sound can be easily be over produced, and this would seem to be what has been going on. Maybe he should hire Nick Lowe to `bash out' his next album.

This LP/CD rates just a few notches above a bootleg. I have better bootlegs of this tour. Iggy has been quoted as saying this record was his 'F U' to RCA to fulfill his contract.
The songs are great but the production/sound is god awful. My band's practice sounded better than this.
It's a fill-in for a catalog item plus with it having Bowie on keys and vocals....
I saw this tour in Columbus OH at the Agora--this CD doesn't even come close to the live show

Good eight song 'live' album that was in support of the Igster's first two solo records,'Lust For Life' and 'The Idiot'.Surprisingly ENOUGH after I've heard several old school fans slam this CD,I actually liked it pretty well myself.Tracks that'll have me playing this disc semi-frequently (for at least awhile) are "Sixteen",the *ss-kicking "Lust For Life","Nightclubbing"(forgotten just HOW much I really do love this cut)and "I Wanna Be Your Dog".Duration is just 35 minutes,but even by TODAY'S standards,this CD still rocks.True prime-o Detroit punk.A should-have.

Simply a GREAT Iggy Live Album!.......2003-11-19

A good selection from his Lust for Life/The Idiot support tour. Tight band with the Sales Brothers in his rhythm section. A good selection of tunes from both the Stooges repertiore and his own blossoming solo act. Probably my favorite version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog," and well as the best live version of "I Got a Right." Overall, an incredible live collection by Mr. Pop.

He looks like a sad kitten on the cover, if you look at it for awhile. lol. One of the best albums of anyone ever. Look past the bad recording, and you will find a gem under the DIRT!!!

It's really beautiful at night.

I could listen to it all night. The guy who said he's getting a refund is a jerk!!

Most professional reviews that I've read trash this album but it's one of my favourites so it's nice to see some positive reviews. I even like the sound quality - it's got some muscle that I've never heard on another live album. The whole band sounds perfect.

13 performances from two shows recorded during T Rex's last tour in 1977, The Rainbow (March 18th) & The Portsmouth Locarno (March 20th). The first 5,000 copies include a limited five track bonus CD featuring the November 11, 1974 show at the Agora Club in Cleveland. The Damned, who were the opening act on the U.K. tour, join T Rex on the 11 minute version of 'Get It On'! Bonus CD tracks: 'Jeepster', 'Telegram Sam', 'Token Of My Love', 'Teenage Dream' & 'Zip Gun Boogie'. 1997 Edsel/ Demon release. Double slimline jewel case.

Important Historical Document--Very Good Shows.......2004-09-17

While these live shows do not represent T. Rex at its 1971-1973 peak, the disc is a great piece of history--1) it is one of Marc Bolan's only live discs 2) the main CD is of the final tour of Marc's life, while his career was finally on the upswing again and he was sounding great, just months before the fatal car crash. Docked one star simply because the sound has a few glitches. Had he lived, Bolan would have made far more of an impact in the U.S. than he did. This release shows he had assembled a great group of musicians again (some who had played with Bowie) and still had the genius songwriting spark.

BOLAN Rocks Da House!!!.......2003-03-12

Nothing can top hearing Marc Bolan & T.Rex live, except that is... Marc Bolan & T.Rex LIVE!
But as that (sadly) is never to be again, the next best thing is LIVE recordings of the King of Glam/Bopping Elf/Godfather of Punk.
This Cd ROCKS! Great quality, when you think that in 1977 the technical equipment was NOTHING like it is today!
Bolan's unique (and very often COPIED vocal style - Bono:U2 amongst them), reverberates deliciously thru both discs.
The music is pure Bolan Boogie/Bop/Rock.
Its very easy to see the Legacy Bolan has imprinted on Popular music, as even today his style has transgressed time and space. His original sound, as is proved by the countless covers, is as actual now as it was in the 70's. Check out the recent & excellent "(Bang A Gong)Get It On" covers by the likes of LONDON BUS STOP or NATURAL BORN HIPPIES, garanteed to get your bones shakin'!
T.REX fan or not, "Marc Bolan & T.Rex Live 1977" is NOT just a Blast From The Past, but a Top actual account of how Timeless-Music should be played!!!
Go out & buy this one, and let your kids hear it too!

Not great.......2003-01-18

This Live T Rex CD must rate at one of the worst live performances ever recorded. All the eliments people love about Bolan and T Rex are missing. The nice guitar riffs are lost and the Bolan voice is particularly not good . I even asked myself if it was really him singing. No, he didn't try too hard that night,did he? He couldn't have known he was being recorded and that it was going to be released. He would never have alowed it out.A total [upset]. Save your money and buy some of his studio material

Live after Death.......2001-04-24

Was I ever pleased to see this c.d.! Being a Bolanite I had these shows already on bootleg(oops I mean fan recording),both vinyl and tape.Over in the U.S way back then,fans were making pen pals in the back of the music rags to obtain the rainbow show.This tour was the last before Bolan died Sept.16,1977 (one month to the day after Elvis).It was nice to buy it for the very fact that the sound quality would be a tad better than the boots I've been playing over two decades. Too bad there was never a live venture released during his career,as T.Rex really rocked LIVE! As always Marc and the new T.rex revamped and reworked most of the songs.Check out the legendary Herbie Flowers and his wonderful basslines....Damn Hot!This tour had the Damned opening ,because Bolan was on the pulse of newer music and no doubt helped sell those tour tix.Very shrewd.From Jeepster to Hot Love the crowd was loving it.For all you Damned fans Bang a Gong has bolan bringing out the Damned and they do jam....damn! Speaking of Bang a Gong ,I was a bit let down when on disc two,the aforementioned was not included from the Cleveland Agora show.How do I know? StellaMarz and I were there November 11,1974.The show was recorded by WMMS (when they were cool)Then Broadcast the following week.Hence a spat of boots of that particular show.The official Light of Love Tour was succinct ... and to the point> LET"S ROCK! With Gloria Jones on vocals and clavinette,we were treated to updated versions of Jeepster,Telegram Sam.Songs from the Casablanca l.p. LIGHT OF LOVE,Token of my Love and Teenage Dream.It should be noted that Teenage Dream was originally the Zinc Alloy l.p. and also on 45 as a solo Marc Bolan release in 1974.Even though Zinc Alloy was not issued in the U.S .,some of those songs were issued on the Light of Love L.p.ZIPGUN BOOGIE was a new tune ,slagged by the critics when released on single ,but it sure cooked live. The one gem that isn't here is Bang a Gong. Bolan was just crazed !at one point he went into a monologue/poem thing and spoke of "seeing James Dean",.Hmmmm,Dean did die in a car crash September 30,Bolan born on Sept.30,and ditto he died in a car crash as his teen idol Eddie Cochrane. I swear Bolan really wasn,t from this place as he was said in an interview. But these recordings do attest that he did cruise by.Play this Loud and have a Party.Marc would love it. keep a little Marc in your heart.....

T Rex never released a live album. Had Bolan not died in 1977, I wouldn't mind betting that this would have been the follow-up to Dandy, with Debora lifted from it as the single. He's clearly put the excesses of the previous few years behind him and is enjoying himself.

Of the posthumous live albums that have been released, this is far and away the best: the band are tight, Bolan's in great form and the audience are loving it. The sound is a little ropey in places, but the tapes had had twenty years to deteriorate before the CD was released.

Some of the hits are there, but more importantly the album includes a number of tracks from the then new album Dandy. Best song is the amazingly punked-up Debora. The second CD is a concert from three years previously when Bolan was in his porky pixie phase. It's a nice extra (my copy states that only the first five thousand copies include the second CD) but by no means essential in the way that the first CD is.

The Magic is Not there........1998-09-14

T.REX fans, leave this one alone. His voice is tired at the end of this last tour and there is no T.REXTASY to this one at all. Sad to say.
