Meet Joe Black, director Martin Brest's remake of the '30s semiclassic Death Takes a Holiday, took widespread critical potshots for its three-hour length and laconic pace. Ironically, composer Thomas Newman's score is a compelling exercise in musical economy--spare, emotionally longing arrangements where the spaces resonate almost as much as the notes. The composer (youngest son of the great film scorer Alfred Newman and cousin to Randy Newman) shows the same deft handling of emotional nuance he displayed on The Shawshank Resemption, The Horse Whisperer, and Oscar and Lucinda (winner of Best Original Score at the 1998 Australian Film Awards), here underplaying the story's romance and otherworldly aspects with a few piano notes and a masterful use of strings and winds. My mental stability has always been in question, especially by my grandma. However, after just minutes of absently listening to the tv in the next room, some internal radar picked up on the sensual sounds coming from the movie Meet Joe Black. I put down my bowling ball and slowly walked into the next room. I felt as if my world had changed. This music had slid under my skin and was traveling into my brain. I sat on the sofa next to my stuffed pink flamingo and tears slid down my cheeks. I listened and the sadness washed over me like an ocean. Yet I couldnt get enough. This music carries me away on adventures you wouldn't believe. Its the music I say. The emotions that cloak me from hearing the music have NOTHING to do with the actors. I just breathe the music.

I cannot think of any score I've heard that is as poignant to the film for which it is written than Thomas Newman's "Meet Joe Black". After repeated listens I'm still fascinated by how the love theme for "Whisper of a Thrill" and "Someone Else" is both sublimely romantic and disturbing at the same time. I find that juxtaposition to be a perfect match to the film...although it had its faults, the score does not. The achingly beautiful scenes between Brad Pitt and Claire Forlani toward the end of the film owe a huge debt to Newman's score. How did the Academy overlook him for Best Original Score? He wasn't even nominated. A shame really. But no award would do this music justice. It is simply, indescribably, and deliciously beautiful.

Aficionados of the "classics" will love this soundtrack. The medley of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" is worth the entire album. The instrumental music is wonderful ambient music for a relaxed or romantic setting.

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked masterpiece that slipped under the radar........2006-09-09

Though the film itself may have left some viewers itching to leave the theater (with a rather gratuitous running time of 178 minutes), the score alone from "Meet Joe Black" makes it one of the more memorable films of 1998. In fact, Thomas Newman's score makes such an impact that it is able to stand out as a separate work of art all on its own. Hell, I would even go so far as to say it's a masterpiece.

Personally, I think Newman does some of his best work here. Specifically with tracks such as "Walkaway" and "Cold Lamb Sandwich", both of which are beautifully seasoned with the film's main theme. Other tracks like "Everywhere Freesia" and "Peanut Butter Man" showcase Newman's ability to compose vivacious and spirited pieces. Newman is more well-known for his moody and haunting "dark" themes, so it's nice to hear the occassional "quarky" track every once in a while, such as the previous two.

Other highlights on the soundtrack include "Whisper of a Thrill,", "Death and Taxes", and the stunning closing track, "That Next Place" (one of Newman's best compositions to date).

Granted, this may not be for every avid film score lover out there. I think Thomas Newman fans more than anyone else will tend to lean more towards it and appreciate it a little more. It is a prime example of Newman's distinguished style, and proves why he is one of the most widely respected and talented film composers in the industry today. I just find it to be such a shame that this little gem seemed to have slipped under the radar.

I admit I'm a little late concidering the release date and this soundtrack is way too good to have never heard of it. But with score it's like with everything else: You must make the experience yourself! And so will the movie of "Meet Joe Black" has been recently shown on television. And I cannot begin to tell how amazed and sad at once I was -- amazed by the talent a composer can ever carry (Thomas Newman turns out to be a god) and deeply sad about how I could ever miss this beautiful composition for so many years (that's inexcusable)! This truly is - without exaggerating anything - one of the greatest and most affecting orchestral scores ever written for a movie!!! Everyone who listens to the score, even without having watched the movie at first, will know what I mean! This beautiful album of instrumental tracks I would highly recommend to try for yourself with no need for the DVD at all! The movie is a typical fantasy romance with Mr. Death sneaking in someone else's body and our stereotyped Barbie, who both fall in love with each other, but cannot be together forever, so he breaks her heart, kills her father and then sends back the old inhabitant of this body, and so on... <---this plot must not meet everyones taste or expectations to a 08/15-US-movie-romance! But in the center of focus for now is the score and this one I can only recommend as mostly scores completely drown within the intenseness of a movie; but in this case the movie wouldn't be what it is without those soft violin strives and the sensitive accompaniment of the piano sounds.
To mention a couple of them, I mostly liked the main theme and its variations:

There is nothing else left to say about this, one must make the experience for himself! This is unequivocal a work of art; a so far not reached masterpiece, which captures the whole beauty of the movie marvellous good with its harmonic ecstatic melody. I don't know what other references Thomas Newman has as a composer, but I'm looking forward to listen to some more of his works...something a lot of other people should do as well! You won't regret it! ;)

The cleverness of Fall Out Boy's lyrical content is immediately evident by looking at the song titles on their sophomore disc, From Under the Cork Tree. "A Little Less 'Sixteen Candles,' a Little More 'Touch Me,'" "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" and "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" are but a small taste of the group's acerbic attitude. After FOB's indie debut hit the underground charts, the group's sudden indie-style success made for a fast growth spurt. Their appeal is obvious, from frontman Patrick Stump's Killer-esque pipes (especially evidenced in the disc-closing "XO") to their very melodic teen-angst anthems. While much of the disc operates at usual punk-pop speed, the highlight comes from a slower, emotion-laden cut called "I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth." I was skeptical about buying after hearing "Sugar, We're Going Down" but after hearing "A Little Less Sixteen Candles" I knew I'd like it. It's a very witty cd full different types of songs. Definately not one of those cds where all the songs sound the same. It's one of the few cds I can put in and listen to for long drives and never want to change.

As someone who is more into R and B and Latin, when my friend bought me this CD i thought it was a joke. I already knew the first single and loved it, but this was overboard. Well I was mistaken-- this CD, it's titles and it's music, is the best CD I've heard in a LONG TIME...

(From Under the Cork Tree) get it? ignore everyone who complains about fall out boy being a punk posuer. fall out boy isnt punk and isnt trying to be. If you dont like snitches and talkers get stitches and walkers (and come on, think about the title for a minuite and then realize how funny it is....) you need to re-listen to the song. It's a good, darker version of fall out boy. realize that pete wentz used to be a hardcore raver with blonde dreadlocks, and used to be in a hardcore metal band called 'Arma Angelus' look it up in itunes and you'll realize why pete does the screaming. Also, can i point out that The Sex Pistols were the orignal people to 'sell out'? They were basically created to be walking adverstisments for a store called 'SEX' They were a legend but were never the 'true punks' they WERE BILLBOARDS. it pisses me off when people compare other bands to the sex pistols like that. The sex pistols were sell-outs from the begining. i think they made quite a bit of money to support their drug habits too.

the point is, BUY THE CD. Snitches and talkers is more rock/hardcore The music or the misery surprised me by being very pop, My heart is the worst weapon is slower but unlike the version on my heart is the b-side to my tongue, has drums bass etc. The sugar remix sound like windchimes, and the Dance Dance remix is very techno and makes me want to do the robot. :-)

Mathew Braxmeier --- Generic Emo??? I bet you have never listened to Emo in your life man... Clueless Whiner!!! And as for a title lenght... What would you preffer? Something short n catchy for you like 'Wannabe' By the Spicegirls??? Did you buy the album or just search for sum bands you probably knew you wouldnt like so that u could moan about em???

And as for Jane Doe --- HHHMMMM there is the 'old favourite' Nirvana... WOW that would be amazing for sumbody to not like Nirvana thesedays... Granted they did write a few good songs... Heck even spawned Foo Fighters after the death but jesus samuel christ!!! Ive yet to meet sumbody thats not in love with them...

And before you sit there and say... Aw i bet he hasnt heard anything other than smells like teen spirit and come as you are... Wrong! I have every album... I just choose not to listen to them to fall under the typical Category of Anotherone who goes with the crowd...

As for Black Flag, Sex Pistols and The misfits... Wow a little bit of taste from someone who has yet to have a little bit of variation in her taste!!! Move with the times Jane... All great bands in their time just as Fall Out is a brilliant band of this time!!!

Every song just as catchy as the next with this album... Yet to hear how they can sound the same as AFI, Greenday or Panic!

Anyone who wants to whine send them my way... Im sure Jane will i noticed the only 2 reviews were complete and utter moans...

Buy this album... It is sheer genius!!!

well the band sounds like a yellow card,simple plan,panic at the disco,all american rejects etc. ALL of the bands have the same sound and music that a person from 10-17 would buy. And you proboly saw the video before hearing the song on the radio. If your older 18 and up. you need to get in to some GOOD music. Try the ramones, the offspring, sex pistols or even green day.

I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.

I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.

I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator

This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......

This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

This is a tremendous value considering the price and the number of tracks that you get. The renditions are not bad, but I have heard better Foster. There is a lot of narration, which makes this a great teaching tool to introduce Foster and Sousa. The narration is a bit more for Foster than Sousa. Some of the Foster songs seem to be cut a little short, giving you what is really more of a sampler than a rich collection of complete Foster songs. The Sousa marches seem to be a little longer and don't have quite as much narration. Even though both men were well known American composers, their type of music was quite different, so it's kind of an odd paring on this album. It's a pleasant listen, but not a "must have" item unless you don't have much Foster or Sousa in your music collection; it's a good starter album. Great for kids who might be interested in learning about these two famous composers.

this cd gas a great selection of music on it. the sound of the music is perfectly clear and i definately reccomend it. it is an ideal disc for all march fans. two of the greatest american composers on one disc. this is also a great deal considering the amount of songs on this disc. definately but this cd.

Baird, Russell and Van Buskirk give fine performances in a splendid
program, but tenor Frederick Urrey [his Foster recording debut?] is a sensation! A glorious voice, with a perfect command of style in
operatic, ballad, ensemble and even comic scenes, his Melinda May is breathtaking, his Beautiful Dreamer is the best on records, his
duets charm and his drunken husband is a gas! He has it all!! In my 25 years of total immersion in Foster and his era, I have never
even dreamt of hearing an artist of such stature. Foster was said to have a fine voice and to sing his music better than any other.
I pray we now hear more of SF's songs as he must have sung them!

Linda Russell is a remarkable woman. I have every CD she has done and I've never been disappointed in the high quality recordings she releases. I consider her every bit of an historian as the authors of history books.
This collection of Stephen Foster tunes, one of two that Russell has partaken in, is a rousing collection of the musical sounds of the mid-19th century. Soprano Julianne Baird and tenor Frederick Urrey join in with Ms. Russell's alto vocals to make a truly remarkable ensemble (including the musicians playing the mountain dulcimer, fortepiano, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, recorder, and accordion - all on authentic antique instruments). All combined show off the genius that Stephen Foster was - the 19th century's top songwriter who wrote music for ALL time, not just his time.
But if it wasn't for the musical reenactors (on CD at least) of Russell and company many of these long lost gems might have stayed hidden, sadly unheard. Some choral music, a feel of opera, a bit of traditional folk all mixed together to make what I feel is an authentic piece of musical history.
Here's hoping that Linda Russell and friends continue in the making of traditional music - Christmas and popular.
Ms. Russell, do you ever tour? We'd love to see you here in Michigan!

What a delicious surprise this little album is, and from the ..... date, it appears to have been around for a few seasons, but is utterly new to me. I am a Julianne Baird fan from the get-go, but was pleasantly taken aback at her appearance on an album of American songs with folk balladeer Linda Russell (who plays dulcimers, mountain fiddles and all manner of country instruments and sings with the earthy texture of Judy Collins). But as usual Baird finds a way to integrate her own exquisite sensibilities and artistry into the assignment and makes a touching case for the simple and heart-rending Foster tunes--this is, after all, "early music" in which she excels--American "Early Music." Tenor Fred Urrey is another find and he likewise blends wonderfully into the surroundings. In fact, the three diverse artists hit their stride in a haunting trio rendition of Old Black Joe. Keyboard and string instruments have a ghostly and authentic ring to them as well. indeed, after the pompous and overblown Foster CDs of better-known opera singers in the bins today, this is so welcome. A treasure!

This is an excellent rendition of Stephen Foster's songs, capitalizing on the duality inherent in the repertoire: the beautiful parlor ballads and the rowdy folk-inspired tunes. Especially remarkable is the fact that the performers bring to the music the "early music" sensibility (Julianne Baird is renowned as a performer of Elizabethan lutesongs)--this sensibility urges the performers to be as historically accurate as possible, performing on original/reproduction instruments. Also of note is the fact that it is a collaboration between classical and folk musicians: soprano, alto, tenor, fortepiano, fiddle, mountain and hammered dulcimers, harmonica, recorder, and accordian. Linda Russell (alto, mountain dulcimer) is lyrical and moving with her "folkie" voice, perfectly complementing the other "cultivated" voices and grounding them on the occasions they come together in poignant harmony.

I only wish that they had incorporated a 19th c. parlor guitar to round out the ballads. Overall, however, one can well imagine that this is indeed the way the music sounded. As one of America's first "popular song" writers, the present performers succeed in doing him justice by incorporating many styles of 19th c. popular musics, avoiding the anachronistic "bluegrass" sound often used in performances of this repertoire, and never succumbing to waves of overly self-indulgent nostalgia.

From the opening cords of 'Comfort You', to the closing strains of 'How Does It Feel?', Eskimo Joe deliver a superbly crafted rock album that makes you sing the songs long after the CD is over.

From their humble beginnings as winners of the Australian National Campus Band Competition in 1997 to their recent #1 album 'Black Fingernails, Red Wine', Eskimo Joe's music and sound has only improved over the years.

The first single from the album, 'Black Fingernails, Red Wine' delivered an evocative song that remained in your head long after the last notes were finished and the video images had faded. With the follow up singles 'Sarah' and the incredible 'New York', Eskimo Joe have continued to deliver not only strong and unforgettable rock music, but videos that leave an indelible mark on rock.

The next single from BFRW will be the brilliant 'Breaking Up' and once again, will deliver what Eskimo Joe is truly known for - fantastic, strong Australian rock music that represents the best of the best.

Not only do Eskimo Joe deliver on CD, but their live performances are simply amazing. Energetic, fun and captivating for the whole 90 odd minutes they hold sway over the stage and audience.

If you want to hear good, Australian rock music, then I would highly recommend buying this CD. There's not a song on it that I don't like, and it only took me one listen to LOVE the album. Its fantastic, Australian rock music at its best.

Once again my best friend in Oz turned me onto to another Australian band (the last one was Wolfmother) and this time it was Eskimo Joe. The title tune is irresitable. It is on heavy rotation on my play list. The rest of the album grows on you after 2 or 3 listenings. If you like Coldplay and Snow Patrol then you will definitely like this album.

This epic album is true FIVE STAR material.

With the flood of music (most of it "so la la"..) which we have at our disposal these years, it is great to finally find an album which I have been able to play time and time again!

This superb quality album has very well written and arranged songs which, although being quite different to one another, have a collective style or atmosphere which can leave you with the impression that this is a brilliantly complete "concept" album.

The music has an energy which you can chill to with moderate volume in the backgound, but I really enjoy this wonderful CD cranked right up! It is also a very well produced and detailed piece of work, which starts and finishes perfectly.

I look very much forward to when Eskimoe Joe finally get their break here in Europe - As with almost all aussie bands, they are probably even better live!

Black Fingernails, Red Wine is certainly a CD which I recommend to anyone who yearns for interesting, intelligent and quality pop-rock music.

Do yourself a favour - Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Emergency, I think I am falling apart.......2006-11-27

So what is a old blues jazz man doing listening to a frighteningly good young power rock pop trio from the
port suburb of Fremantle (former home of the America's Cup, and Bon Scott of AC/DC) in the beautiful west coast,
white sandy beach oriented city of Perth, Western Australia?

I was channel hopping one night and got hungry, so I tuned the television to a music programme and went to fix myself a sandwich.
Well, half way through laying down the cheese layer I found myself unconsciously singing to a rock song on the
television. This made me stop and take stock. So I listened a little harder and then found the hairs on the
back of my neck rising, and then I felt like having a beer, and I felt my youth was returning to me (at least the memories of it) with all
the hormonal urgings, and the dreams, and the excitement of discovering girls and surfing - all around this music.

I was shaken momentarily.

How would I describe the music of Eskimo Joe.
Infectious power rock pop with stunning male vocals and spine tingling guitar riffs and hooks.
What also stopped me in my tracks, was watching the 7 song cycle the band played on television and being glued to the screen. These guys have a definite presence, watch them perform if you get the chance.
I sensed I was witnessing something special, a band of enormous talent, perhaps not fully realised (even yet), and hey... they come
from down the road - unbelievable indeed.

I am forever amazed at how this world of ours continues to throw us curve balls, to make life interesting in a myriad of ways.

Listen to Black Fingernails, Red Wine, the "single to make you tingle". This song was picked up by radio
station Triple JJJ in Australia and it immediately took off like a concord - a great song.

The rest of the songs range from power cords with gorgeous guitar hooks and keyboards to gut wrenching power melodies and
achingly beautiful vocals that make one long to re-live life's youthful emotions, and all those urgent feelings and
human desires. The lyrics speak of home and of New York and of London, where we yearn like the singer for a woman who has left
Western Australia and gone home to London, and we worry for her safety from the London Bombs.

I am not sure if young people define this as surf music these days, but it made me want to go surfing again, kind of like the Hoodoo Gurus in the old days.

Each song is an interesting, and often touching story, sometimes enough to cause a strong emotional reaction, and many of these inspiring songs ask you the question in one way or another - "how does it feel?" (life I suppose!).

Well, Eskimo Joe, you have "surprisingly" made an ageing ex-60's/70's baby boomer hippy feel very emotionally good again, very strong.

Is this not what music is indeed supposed to evoke?

Anyway, good on you young fella's.
Let the spinakers out boys, and fly!!

As some of you know, I am a Ferrante and Teicher fan from way back. When I read their dedication on this disc, I was really impressed. I dont know which one is officially retired, but the fact that he came out of retirement to help put this disc together was great... and the disc is A-1! During the Bicentennial year(1976) I had a vinyl disc, Spirit of 176, which
much of the music from this disc is from. Some of the musical effects are quite interesting, and my mother really loves the disc. I am so pleased that they released it. A real keeper!

It was while searching for classic Gospel clips and listening to the Davis Sisters sing "YOU'RE GONNA NEED HIM" on YouTube that I first heard this INCREDIBLE voice. Spanning a career in the 1940's-60's, Brother Joe May was basically a "Sanctified Blues Shouter", singing in the same Chicago church milieu that produced Aretha Franklin. In his prime his style and phrasing was compared to Mahalia Jackson but unlike her, he did not play the secular circuit (and thus never acheived her level of fame). As the Album title indicates, he was called the "Thunderbolt of the Midwest" but with a full-throated range extending past C4 I like to think of him as the "Gospel Caruso" !

Highlights of this collection include a bluesy 6/8 rendition of OUR FATHER (not the usual tune for the Lord's Prayer). I don't have the album (yet!) but I downloaded this cut from Wynona Carr's DRAGNET FOR JESUS on iTunes. There's another collection, WHEN GOSPEL WAS GOSPEL, that features selections from lots of the old Gospel Greats like Mahalia, Rosetta Tharpe, the Davis Sisters, Marion Williams and others...

The first time I heard this Brother Joe May Specialty album, (reviewed in Jazz & Blues Report in the November 1993 issue) I was overwhelmed. Here was as powerful a singer as I had heard and if not religious, I could not help but be impressed by the fervor as well as his power in the performances. Concord has acquired Fantasy (and Specialty) and this CD is still in print and this should be readily available.

Fantasy Records not only has a fine series of reissues from the Specialty rhythm and blues catalog, but also the equally invaluable Legends of Specialty Gospel series. Space limitations prevents as extensive coverage of all these releases that they deserve. One recent release in particular stands out with one of the most remarkable singers of any genre that America has ever heard. Thunderbolt of the Middle West spotlights Brother Joe May, with guest appearances by Sister Wyonna Carr, the Pilgrim Travelers, and, on the live recording of Old Ship of Zion that opens this collection, Charles Brown on organ and the Sallie Martin Singers. It isn't simply his range, it is, as the annotators state, his uncanny sense of dynamics and vocal projection that leave their mark on the listener. His vocals go from a gentle recitation to a soaring affirmation of his beliefs that make his renditions of Thomas Dorsey's "How Much More of Life's Burden Can We Bear" or "I'm Gonna Live the Life I Sing About in My Song", so compelling. In addition to his powerful singing, there are also a dozen or so songs from the late gospel composer. Brother Joe May was firmly committed to gospel music, and resisted efforts to have him make secular recordings. If he had crossed over, he would have been one of the rhythm'n'blues artists recently honored with a stamp by the postal service. (I originally wrote this review when the Postal Service issued several stamps of the likes of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson.)
