Album Description
Voice Lessons To Go! Volume 2 Do Re Mi Ear and Pitch Training
Voice Lessons To Go! is a great way to get going on your singing voice. Whether just beginning or as an addition to the work you have done. Now there is no excuse not to practice and improve because this CD makes it so convenient and easy.
Do Re Mi Ear and Pitch Training is the second CD to Ariella Vaccarino's series of Voice Lessons To Go (Please read about Volume One- Ocalize and Breath). Do Re Mi trains the ear through vocal exercises. First, start simple with tone recognition. Next, the heart of the CD, Solfedge, (Do Re Mi...)- In that you will concentrate on forms of the major and chromatic scales graduating into chord recognition. Finally, Do Re Mi ends with, Hearing Your Note, showing you how to sing specific notes out of a group.
This CD will be amazing in aiding you in your musicianship skills while continuing to strengthen your voice!
Do Re Mi is perfect for all levels of singers. Whether you are just a beginner who is interested in developing as a musician, or an advanced singer wanting to refine your musicianship skills.
You will be guided through the exercises with vocal examples and piano accompaniment by Ariella Vaccarino an excellent experienced voice teacher and professional singer from Los Angeles. Ariella's explanations are clear and easy to follow.
Developing your singing voice no longer has to be just for people trying to make a career with their voice, or those with disposable income who can afford private lessons. The weekly price for voice lessons averages $45-150 an hour depending on your city.
Who is this CD for?
Singers, Actors, Dancers- This is an inexpensive way for the struggling artist to get and keep their voices in shape.
Teenagers - Whether you are watching American Idol with pangs of desire to be on there, sing loudly along with your favorite pop stars, are trying out for the school musical, or dreaming of singing at the MET some day.
People who struggling singing- There are those out there who feel, (it could be true or not) that they can't sing and are embarassed when they have to be heard by others. This is an excellent private way to improve your singing with out having to deal with embarassment or shyness. This CD will increase your abilities and confidence.
Adults- Always singing in your car, shower, or doing Karaoke? -but just are not willing or able to shower yourself with private lessons yet.
Customer Reviews:
Old Singers benefit too.......2007-02-09
I have both Volume 1 and 2. I have been singing all of my life but after the birth of my last child almost 10 lbs I learned some really bad habits and what I was doing before wasn't working anymore. Both have helped me to gradually improve my voice. 1 Helped me to focus on breathing. Two is helping me to associate the solfege with the piano and concentration/focus. I haven't made it through the whole CD yet. Our choir is also using this CD for exercises. It's just a great all around CD!
THanks for a great product.
great cd .......2007-01-21
i have both vol.1&2
only one thing i'm not feel good is i can hear the noise(like car pass the street).
Good training for your voice.......2007-01-06
If you can't have a personal voice coach this CD is a good way to go to help you exercize your vocals and stay in top form.
Practical.......2006-09-09
I warm up with this cd in the hotel before a show. I waited a couple months to buy CD2 after I had CD 1. I had started taking vocal coaching and using cd 1 reinforced how important breathing is. I am glad I waited before buying this cd. By the time you get to the higher level exercises of CD 2, you'll need some concept of breathing properly.
This cd starts very simple with the first few tracks asking the listener to identify if two notes are higher, lower or the same. Then it proceeds to identifying if a voice part sung after a vocal part is the same or different. These ear exercises are direct and to the point and really do help. Don't worry, you start singing soon enough.
Solfedge is explained in a concise manner so if you don't know it you will, and if you do your money hasn't been spent on more than a few minutes of review.
The singing starts with Do Mi Sol Mi Dos. I'm a baritone and the singer I would guess is a soprano. Problem? Actually, the beneift was I had to focus and identify the same note a few octaves down. This extra "lesson" on my own is an unintended plus.
Major, minor, augmented and diminished chords are practiced. Your ear will improve and you will hear the chords sung more in songs after getting this down.
I've been using it on my drive to work in the mornings. I have had the cd a few weeks and am just reaching tracks 18 and 19 with confidence. Sometimes Ariella Vaccarino sings quite fast as the exercise proceeds. Simply hit the back button and start at the slower part at the beginning of the track.
It really is great to have this in the car or home as I am getting more out of my weekly voice lessons. Add to that, I don't have to play the piano myself. I can stand in front of the mirror and focus on posture.
This brings me back to cd 1. Though my breathing needs work, a weekly lesson and the time I spent with cd 1 before trying this out helps me recognize when I have tension in my throat or am not controlling my breath.
Why is this alone not enough? There is no way the cd can tell you you are leaning too far back and squeezing your lungs, give you a sense of how to raise your soft pallate or make sure to cover every point such as men usually jump straight from chest voice to falsetto at first while women have more of a gradual mid voice.
When I give this cd 5 stars it means for 15 dollars you are getting a product with no fluff that is the perfect compliment to some type of training. Even if the training is just a few lessons to get you started. You'll get out of it what you put into it.
If out of stock please purchase above NEW on Marketplace.......2006-08-15
Hey everyone, thank you so much for your great response to my CDs. Amazon is having a lot of trouble keeping them in stock. They are not ordering enough in time etc... Just so you know the other option is buying them off of Amazon Marketplace. At the top of this is the option to buy them new or used. I sell them directly new on it, (and they are actually cheaper so you can buy both volumes). Hope this tip helps. I've loved reading your responses and reviews. I think it is great that so many of you out there are singing!

Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

My experience of this CD.......2007-04-04
My hats off to this CD collection! It was worth it!!! Chopin is a true genius for the piano, on this collection.
Beautiful!.......2006-08-18
This is a beautifully played collection of Chopin's work. It was a birthday gift,
and I listen to bits of it every day. I have yet to find a favorite
CD, as each is so lovely. It is well worth the price.
Well worth the money. Wonderful! Wonderful!.......2006-06-10
I am not a classical music expert but I am an expert when it comes to a great product. I have listened to the works of rubenstein and Horowitz, but nothing is comparable to this great collection of polands favorite son. The nocturnes are dreamy and romantic. The other pieces though not as mesmerizing have plenty of depth and feeling. This is a collection that you will listen to over and over again. Although this music is great anytime, it's especially meaningful during a light rainfall. Go ahead and make this investment. It's only $100.00. For the next 100 days save a dollar and you will have it paid for. I promise you won't be sorry. Excellent! Excellent!
Best investment to make.......2006-05-21
In my opinion, this is the apex of classical music. You will not find a better CD for Chopin or any piano recordings. There may be plenty of comparable CDs, but nothing can claim to surpass this.
Although some pieces are not as good as those by other artists, Ashkenazy's interpretations of Chopin are the best I've ever heard. Add in his amazing technical performance and you've got some sublime music.
Listening to these pieces have immensely helped my own Chopin reportoire. I don't play to mimic Ashkenazy, but I use his insights and apply my own style over that and end up with something exponentially better than what I could produce on my own.
The price is something you have to seriously consider. A hundred bucks. Yeah, that's a lot of money, but that's 48 cents per song. And you'll listen to these songs dozens of times, at least, I guarantee. Plus it's a great deal... if you were to get all the Ashkenazy-Chopin CDs available on Amazon, overlapping pieces as little as possible, you'd pay $30 more and still not have everything.
This is an investment for life and will definitely remain one of my favorite CD sets for decades. Decades. A hundred bucks for decades of amazing music. This stuff is larger than today, larger than life.. music this good is something you can't afford to pass up because of temporary financial difficulties.
A great pianist interpreting the most inspired composer ever !.......2005-09-15
Lets imagine that Chopin himself has recorded his own compositions in a perfectly clear CD. I am sure that some classical music reviewers would say "This is not the way Chopin is meant to be played". These classical music "pundits" are very intolerant.
Interpretation and emotion feeling is also a matter of taste, so that the only one who can give a final answer is Franois (Frederic).
Ashkenazy is gifted with a phenomenal technique, a great pianist. So that this collection is for sure 5 stars. Enjoy it.
Ah, if you like to see piano technique in action, listen to Georgy Cziffra's interpretation of Etude op. 10 no. 4. (Search the album in my reviews.)

Truly Virtuosic.......2007-05-14
The piano music of French Romantic composer Charles-Valentin Alkan is not for everyone. It would never be described as "easy listening." In fact, listening to Alkan's music, especially the first time, requires an effort almost as great as playing other music. Repeated hearings allow one to penetrate the intensity and appreciate the incredible complexity of the compositions, though it is reported that some listeners find the music too unsettling to ever enjoy. Certainly all will find that the music on this CD evokes a wide range of reactions.
If Alkan is a virtuoso as a composer, than the pianist on this CD, Canadian Marc-Andre Hamelin, is equally great. Few pianists are up to the task of performing Alkan's music. Of those, Hamelin must be the best. His playing skills and understanding of the heart of the music make this a truly exceptional CD.
One of the best solo piano recordings ever made........2005-05-22
This disc is totally astonishing. One you start listening to it you will not be able to stop. The Grande Sonate is one of the most beautiful, moving, complex pieces of music for solo piano ever written. Hamelin brings it to life like no one else can. If you have never listened to Alkan, this is a fine introduction to some of the greatest (and most forgotten) piano music ever composed. And if you have never listened to Hamelin - this is probably his greatest work ever. The more you listen to the Grande Sonate the more you discover in it. You wait for those dramatic, breathtaking moments. You marvel at how two human hands can produce these sounds through the piano, and you continually find more subtlies and nuances in this materpiece. Words fail in describing how great this recording is. If you love piano music - get it. It you love Alkan it is truly a must.
so fast it misses the point.......2005-05-20
Much of Alkan's music is vacuous. This is not to dismiss its value, but it is to say that there is much which is of interest because of the technical demands and effects which are on display, and the apparent challenge and impressiveness which these incur. The Grande Sonate stands alone as being altogether different. It is a poetic masterpiece. It is a misconception to regard Alkan as being simply a composer of pyrotechnical virtuosity, even if it is a common and understandable one. What is unforgiveable is to treat the Grande Sonate in the same way as one might approach 'Comme le Vent', 'le Chemin de Fer', the 'Scherzo-Focoso' or any other piece which is clearly reliant on a stringent adherence to tempo and little in the way of expressive variation. Is it sensible to condone a performer who does this? One who plays note-perfectly at an astonishingly fast pace, yet who does not take the requisite time to bring out the almost infinitely complex and inter-related themes, motifs, ideas that inhere the piece? If you are interested in hearing someone play challenging music very quickly then buy this recording. If you want to hear what is arguably the most original work of solo piano writing to come out of the nineteenth-century performed with all the poetic nuance that it deserves, then buy Pierre Reach's stunning recording. Hamelin is an incredibly athletic and gifted pianist, and perhaps an ideal exponent of Alkan, but the Grande Sonate deserves a more patient and respectful approach, and this is not to be found on this recording.
An Inimitable Masterpiece.......2004-06-30
There are special moments in life when you remember exactly what you were doing when it happened. I remember exactly what I was doing when I first heard Bruckner's Eight (Guilini), Mahler's Second (Bernstein), Liszt Sonata (Horowitz), Gaspard de la Nuit (Michelangeli), and I can still hear to this day Richter's Schuman Symphonic Etudes, just to name a few. They were all life-changing events. My friend and I were having dinner when Hamelin's Grande Sonata appeared from the radio. Wow! I remember asking, "What crazy person had the nerve to compose this?", and more importantly, "Who on earth had the gall to record it?" Up to this faithful day in 1995, I had never heard of Hamelin or Alkan.
On this disc, Hamelin plays with so much elan, control, and technical ease that it leaves you breathless. Although the legendary Raymond Lewenthal and the late Ronald Smith have to be commended for their efforts in popularizing Alkan's much-neglected music, I believe Hamelin and this disc has been even more influential. I don't know if Alkan playing on this disc will ever be matched. This is certainly one of the greatest albums in history and should be part of the collection of all true classical music fans.
Astonishing technique.......2004-05-23
Marc-Andre Hamelin is an astounding virtuoso. He gives life to Alkan's works, which I hear for the very first time! It is really mind-boggling how he succeeds in tackling the Augean stables of the eight-part fugue at the end of Quasi-Faust!!!
It is no wonder, then that even Liszt was afraid to compete with Alkan, whom he deemed a superior virtuoso to himself. Alkan's music in itself has a tremendous intrinsic value, which, if one can feel, describes to such depth the essence of the human soul!

The Most Simple Exercise Songs For Young Children From Bobby Susser.......2006-05-22
I have three day care centers in Florida where music and exercise are favorites in the curriculum for my little children. This collection of very simple songs and exercises is just that. It shows, through the repetition of catchy lines, that Bobby Susser is very aware of children's needs. Susser knows that when he hits upon something catchy for the kids and through his repetition of lyrical and musical phrases, not to let up, giving the kids just what they want. He doesn't give them too much, but enough so they are thoroughly interested, satisfied, and enthusiastic. He knows when to keep going, and when to let up. For those of you who work with kids, you know the importance of repetition. Bobby Susser has mastered repetition of very catchy sections of songs he's created and in doing so, holds children's interest, gives them a heck of a good time, and teaches them all at the same time. I majored in preschool education and music, and believe me, Bobby Susser is a subtle master at teaching through his simple, catchy, songs with repetetive phrases written especially for little ones.
THIS CD IS OLD TRIED AND TRUE.......2006-05-04
I AM A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER AND HAVE USED THIS ALBUM IN CASSETTE FIRST. THEN I BOUGHT THE CD WHEN MY TAPE WORE OUT. I JUST GOT ANOTHER CD BECAUSE I GAVE A TEACHER FRIEND THE CD TO BORROW. SHE LOVED IT SO MUCH FOR HER KINDERGARTEN CLASS THAT SHE ASKED IF SHE COULD KEEP IT. I GAVE IT TO HER AS A GIFT, AND I AM ENJOYING WORKING WITH MY NEW CD, AND WATCHING MY CLASS ENJOY THEMSELVES WHILE THEY EXERCISE AND LEARN OTHER GOOD HEALTH HABITS TO THESE CATCHY SONGS."WIGGLE WIGGLE AND OTHER EXERCISES" IS ONE EARLY CHILDHOOD ALBUM YOU CAN SURELY LABEL AS 'OLD TRIED AND TRUE.' IT NEVER FAILS TO WORK WITH THE KIDS.
The Benchmark Exercise Album For Young Children.......2005-10-24
While B.B. King is the benchmark guitarist for playing the blues, Ray Charles, the benchmark singer for combining soul and gospel music, Barbra Streisand the benchmark vocalist for her range and clarity, Paul Simon, the benchmark singer/songwriter for telling his stories in song format, and Bob Dylan, the benchmark singer/songwriter for using unique phrases and the delivery of them, Bobby Susser's album "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises" is undoubtedly the benchmark album for original songs for young children to exercise to. I am a kindergarten teacher, and I specialize in teaching music, and subjects through music. I have used virtually every collection of songs available for young children to sing along with and exercise to. Some are OK, and some are somewhat good. However, if you want the real thing, Bobby Susser gives it to you in every exercise song in this collection. The repetition of his catchy phrases and melodies is not boring, but rather very successful in teaching the kids the songs and exercises, and in keeping the children always interested. He's a master at using repetition in a positive way for children. It is very obvious, after seeing the children respond immediately to the simple rhythms, friendly vocal deliveries, and all the fun and easy to learn songs that convey the importance of exercise, good health habits, having fun, and incorporating these ideas into your daily routine at an early age, Bobby Susser knows how to make the very most of a song, and a simple 'Wiggle' for young children like noone else I've heard in the nineteen years I've taught little children.
When you listen to the songs "Wiggle Wiggle", "March Around In A Circle", "Let's Pretend", "Hello Hello Goodbye Goodbye", and "Rest Awhile", it is apparent that Bobby Susser is no accident and creates collections for young children that makes children's music history the first time any of his titles are heard. Anyone can easily tell that he cares and is dedicated to the children.
The Finest Kid Songs For Kid Exercises From Bobby Susser.......2005-05-05
This album has everything you possibly want and need for an exercise album for young kids. My preschool class never tires of "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises." Every song is so catchy and exciting for my class. Every song states a purpose, and has printed lyrics and suggested activities in the teacher/parent notes booklet. Subjects covered are developing gross and fine motor skills, coordination, right/left discrimination, listening skills, rhythm, counting, and good health habits, while exercising, and singing. Bobby Susser ends this great collection with a soothing rest song for the kids. This album has it all.
Bobby Susser's Songs And Exercises Are #1 On My Kids' List.......2005-04-04
I'm a first grade teacher who has worked with exercises, and movement songs with my kids. From day to day and year to year this Bobby Susser album "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises" is #1 on my kids' list. The songs are very catchy, but also simple enough for young kids to easily learn. The beats and rhythms are excellent for my young class. They quickly learn the songs and exercises, and have loads of fun doing and learning important health and exercise habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Raw and Primal Power.......2007-03-09
I am not an expert but I must share my own personal thoughts about this disc before I fall over dead. Not much more can be said but I have heard the third of Chopin's etudes played by probably fifty some pianists.
Whenever I hear it I always felt it expressed a love for one to another. Like a sonic love poem. Love has different levels. There is eros, filias, and agape to name a few. In the past I have heard pianists play this with too much eros or with too much of a animal type love. After all we are humans. We have a higher side to us.
And that is where Pollini takes his pedestal. Sure his third etude is maybe a bit faster and a bit restrained, but in the end the love he expresses is transcendental. It is a raw, primal, masculine, powerful love bursting forth like I never heard before. Perhaps it is the depth of Chopin's soul properly expressed for the first time. And yes like any fine wine it takes time to acquire a taste for it (multiple listenings).
Thank you Herr Pollini, now I can die.
Only Pollini.......2006-09-06
Beautifully clear.....however I feel that Chopin would have played it with more passion....expression. I love it but I meant to order Chopin's Polonaises....oh well, next time....thank you Amazon. You did well as usual.
It's his style and it works........2006-05-08
Hello, I am a music graduate in classical piano from a university in hamilton ontario...
I read an earlier review that complains about Maurizio's 'lack of expression'
If he knew anything about this artist then he would know that THIS WAS HIS INTENT...(he recorded the etudes a second time later in his career)
This recording of the chopin etudes was intentionally performed with a cool and calculating style....
and yes it does not do justice to chopin's music, I don't think any performer should avoid the composer's original intent....
but he is forgetting that a lot of the hype that goes into classical music, is based on the performer manipulating the composers music to make something new out of music that has been recorded a million times over...
and although I do agree with the reviewer's judgement of the ocean etude...(since I've played it myself and know the score inside out) I still think that maurizio's format works for him, it makes an impact on the listener
Etude no. 3 in E major sounds dreadful and rushed... but again, I've heard lots of pianists ignore the composers written indications on the score to bring something 'new' to the piece of music.
I believe that this is all he is trying to do, classical artists try to create a distinguishable style by recording old music in a new way, yet it is frowned upon... because it's not JAZZ music (where a composition is an outline and not made to the letter) so, the complete score allows people to look at a classical composition critically and make arguments against a performers interpretation.
classical music shows more proof in the score when someone is doing something erroneous....or something merely prodigal..
Listen to Vladimir Ashkenazy's recordings of the Chopin Etudes if you would like a more sensitive interpretation, and (arguably) is closer to the composers intent/personality.
Just remember that if the music is old enough to exist before a composer could make his own recording of it....
then 'authentic interpretation' will always be in a grey area.
Pollini-Chopin, The Meeting of Two Immovable Objects.......2006-03-19
We will never hear Chopin's own critique of this performance, but I would imagine he would be just as stunned by Pollini's titanic virtuosity as I was the first time I heard this recording. Chopin dedicated his opus 10 (etudes 1-12) to none other than Franz Liszt. I mention this because Pollini plays this opus as though it was written by Liszt. Did Chopin intend opus 10 nos. 1-12 to be played in this Lisztian style? I would argue yes for the simple reason that this is a set of ETUDES, therefore the use of a mammoth technique is not out of place. Pollini's performance is captivating in it's accuray and power, as well as it's beauty (listen to opus 10 No.3).
I remember the first time I heard this album. I was 15 years old, sitting in my parents' minivan in the parking lot of the store at which I had just bought the CD. From the first BOOM of etude op10 No.1 to the last thunderous chord of op25 No.12 I sat transfixed, almost dazed by what I was hearing. It was a life altering experience for me. I was a mediocre piano student not too serious about my piano study. Hearing Pollini made me realize the possibilties of the piano and triggered an absolute resolve to master the instrument. Ten years later, I have mastered all of op.10 and some of opus 25. The reason I mention my background is I feel that I may offer some insight into what technical problems the pianist faces when tackling Chopin's etudes.
Opus 10 No.1 is comprised entirely of r.h. arpeggios with a chorale accompaniment. On the surface it doesn't sound extraordinarily difficult, but when we delve deeper we find the arpeggios are super wide with intervals of as much as a sixth between thumb and index finger and a fourth between the 4th and 5th fingers! At a tempo of 176! It's insane!!!
Opus 10 No.2 also doesn't sound particularly demanding until one realizes that the chromatic scales in the r.h. are played with mostly the 4th and 5th fingers! Try playing a chromatic scale in this way and you will instantly understand the difficulty.
Opus 10 No.3 is, by Chopin's own words, I paraphrase, "In all my life I have never heard a more beautiful melody." Apart from the tumultuous middle section and all of its chromatic tri-tones, the
piece is easy to play but maddeningly hard to play WELL.
Opus 10 No.4 sounds very demanding but is actually one of the easier etudes! There is lots of chromatic passagework along with quickly modulating descending diminished seventh chords. Proper phrasing and rhythmic control are the keys to mastering this etude.
Opus 10 No.5 is arguably the easiest etude. Its l.h. staccato chords are enveloped by a twirling r.h. accompaniment composed entirely of black keys. Proper r.h. arm rotation makes this etude totally effortless.
(I'll finish my analysis later.)
p.s. Garrick Ohlson's recording of the etudes is every bit as good, if not better, than Pollini's.
A compelling performance almost ruined by shallow, glassy sound.......2006-03-18
Pollini took pains as a young artist to mature to his fullest before giving concerts, and this 1972 recital of Chopin Etudes is a leap ahead of his debut disc on EMI. However, despite the alluring technique and aristocratic bearing, his pianism isn't fully fledged yet. Too much of the music is played for surface values without really searching deeper. By 1975, when he came to record the 24 Preludes, Pollini had grown considerably, and even now his artistry seems to gain in depth year by year--his recent Beethoven is quite miraculous.
I am not a piano fancier, so it satisfies me to own this recording of the Etudes and no other. Even so, the performance is badly hampered by glassy, harsh sound. One can't listen at loud volume to the sonority of the instrument thanks to the brittle edge of DG's inferior sonics. With remastering, Pollini's musicianship would certainly acquire another dimension of power and beauty.

Customer Reviews:
Debussy with a difference!.......2007-03-10
Do not let the dismissive review below make you dismiss this amazing and breath taking complete set. Like his Scriabin recordings, Gordon Fergus-Thompson works wonder with the well known piece like Clair de Lune, Arabesque and Reverie, and breathes new life into the music by his keen sense of tonal colours and delicacy. When it comes to impressionist music, no pianists can match Richter, who played Clair de Lune, Pavane or miroirs like a miracle, but Fergus-Thompson creats his own unique soundscape.
He is one of very few pianists alive who pay careful attention to how a note produced on the instrument decays and merges with other notes, while most of pianist nowadays focus mostly on starting point of the sound. That's a secret of the richness of colours and expression in his pianism.
He is often criticised for lack of technical prowess, compared to past masters like Gieseking or Michelangeli, but I can not detect even a hint of technical weakness or instability in this set. This is simply a different and highly personal interpretation, and it is a shame to miss out this magical music making simply because it is different from the mainstream interpretation.
One Star for Charity's Sake.......2007-03-01
Avoid this set!!! The man is a gifted pianist but has no understanding on how to interpret the music. This is the nadir of all the Debussy piano sets. With Walter Gieseking's superlative set available why would you want dog food when you can eat supreme cuisine!!!
Beautifully interpreted.......2007-02-13
Gordon Fergus-Thompson does an amazing job of playing and interpreting Debussy's music. I have been playing piano for years--especially Debussy--and this CD really captures the essence of the music. I'd recommend this to anyone.
Complete Debussy.......2006-12-13
These recordings are some of the highest quality Debussy you'll find. There is a freedom that comes across in Fergus-Thompson's playing that you won't find in other so-called great recordings. Instead of trying to sound "Debussy-like", the music is played naturally while maintaining accuracy and original intent of the composer. Recording quality is up to date. Box set is 4 discs, with the body nicely separated into larger works with dates included.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Chopin may have distrusted romanticism, yet no other romantic composer has worn as well. His music both stings and sings with harmonic adventurousness, together with an uncanny instinct for the geography of the keyboard. The Op. 28 Préludes exemplify Chopin's genius for telegraphing big ideas into snug spaces, while his Études provide an index to his pianistic idiom. Pollini fares best in the Préludes, where his aristocratic pacing and cool control allow the music's mood swings to speak for themselves. The Études glitter with icy accuracy, but the Polonaises lack Rubinstein's rhythmic snap and generosity of spirit. Still, Pollini's unruffled pianism remains the envy of every conservatory student and competition aspirant. DG's analog sonics are fully competitive. --Jed Distler

Impecable!.......2005-11-09
Pollini's interpretation and execution of the 24 etudes is superb, as are his polanaises. His preludes however, no.19 especially, I feel, have a touch of delicacy which it could do without. Where marked 'vivace' it is played closer to 'presto'. Apart from this however it is a first class performance, and fully worthy of the 5 stars I have given it.

Superb Playing.......2005-08-24
While sometimes a little faster than generally performed (as my teacher put it "because he can!") Pollini exeplifies near flawless technique with wonderful interpretation of Chopin. The only complaint I personally have, is that the playing seems a bit technical, and not as much emotion is put into the actual peices. Though Etudes are not generally known for their musicality, Pollini, I feel, could still be afford a little more push/pull in some of the selections.
Pollini does bring a new freshness to the set of preludes. Overplayed and sometimes butchered by the amateur pianist, Pollini peroforms these preludes masterfully and brings them to a level that I've rarely heard.
Other than my minor complaint, I feel that for any student or teacher willing to complete, add or update their library this is a great choice. Pollini delivers a crystal clear performance, worthy of any listener. Easily one of my favorite recordings in my collection!
Really extraordinary performance of the Preludes and Etudes!.......2005-02-25
It takes a very great artist to be able to play pieces which have been overperformed and overtaught, and bring something fresh to the table. Pollini does just that, especially in his performances of the Preludes and Etudes.
I would love to take a poll of the pianists and piano teachers here to see how many times they have taught the Chopin Preludes. From my own experience, I've taught these pieces so many times that I find myself dreading teaching #4 (e minor), #6 (b minor), #7 (A Major) or #20 (c minor) -- and I think we forget that these pieces are actual music and NOT "teaching pieces".
Pollini succeeds in taking these over-played pieces and transforming them back into "music". It's really nothing short of amazing. As I listened, I began noticing secondary melodies I'd never heard, particularly in #5 (D Major), #13 (F-Sharp Major), and #14 (e-flat minor). The F-Sharp Major Prelude is particularly gorgeous -- almost heart-rendingly so in the middle section. The g-sharp minor Prelude has exactly the right sense of fire and drive to bring this piece across; the A-Flat Major, E-Flat Major and F Major Preludes are nothing short of ravishing.
I bought this CD collection on suggestion of a friend of mine (also a pianist) who has experienced the same kind of burn-out I have with Chopin pieces which are over-taught and over-played, and/or over-interpreted to the point where the pieces become parodies of themselves. (I never heard so much bad, truly affected Chopin playing as I did at the school where I initially trained as a pianist!).
Pollini's Chopin is a real breath of fresh air -- restrained, elegantly timed rubatos; enough pedal to effect tonal coloring without the overpedalling so common in so many Chopin performances; a sense of drama in the playing combined with an edge of restraint so the pieces are never "over-played"; and he has an uncanny ability to convey a strong sense of structure to these pieces.
I can say quite honestly that the performances of the Preludes and Etudes on this CD have the force of a revelation. The proof of this is that after hearing the CD (many times), I have decided to learn all 24 Preludes (plus the C-Sharp Minor Prelude, op. 45) and play them all in a recital.
The Polonaises aren't quite as spellbinding as the Preludes and as riveting as the Etudes; but the Preludes and Etudes make this a compelling collection. I strongly and enthusiastically recommend this CD compilation!
About the Etudes.......2001-02-14
This album may be the best Chopin package on the market, especially given the bargain price. That said, an out-of-print CD featuring a young Vladimir Ashkenazy, recorded in Moscow in 1959/60, would be an even better choice (with respect to the Etudes) should it ever again become available. In that legendary recording, Ashkenazy's technique - especially in Op. 25, No. 6 - sends chills down the spine, and he infuses more life into the music than does Pollini. The Ashkenazy of that vintage should not be confused with his older ghost, currently available on the London/Decca label.
What Pollini offers here are whistle-clean performances of (some of) Chopin's major solo works. Pollini's approach, if somewhat clinical, is refreshing for its lack of affectation or excess. He does not belabor the music as many other Chopin performers are inclined to do, and he plays with solid technique throughout.
This Music Doesn't Need A Title.......2001-02-09
I really like this CD because (1) I am a big Chopin fan, and (2) I know these pieces well. Chopin's good point is his romanticism. The tracks on this CD are full of his deep, pasionate feeling for his native Poland, even though he was half French and lived outside Poland in such places as Majorca. He was the archetype of the romantic exile, and did his best to live up to this image by writing appropriately evocative music.
