At a time when experimentation is taboo in most overground rap, that's all Outkast seem intent on executing. Firstly, this double CD has no cohesive link, other than the fact that it sounds like a pair of solo albums stitched together to demo exactly how Andre's yin works to augment Big Boi's yang. Andre 3000's Love Below disc rates as the more eclectic of the two, given that he's turned in his emcee credentials to become a full-on funk-soul-jazz vocalist who mostly sings about items of love ("Happy Valentine's Day"), carnal lust ("Spread"), and female adoration ("Prototype"). Minus the big band schmaltz of "Love Hater" and cheesy cover jobs ("My Favorite Things"), Andre's disc is sick (meaning great). As is to be expected, the Big Boi disc is less arty, more gangsta and worldly, and features the less-progressive guest raps of ATL crunk purveyors Lil' Jon and The Eastside Boyz ("Last Call") and Jay-Z who rhymes the hook on "Flip Flop Rock". Unlike Big Boi, Andre keeps his collabos to a minimum, once crooning alongside Norah Jones on the cool yet sappy "Take Off Your Cool", and once with Kelis. Boi fulfills his Dungeon Family duty with flying colors by flipping some dirty southern up-tempo raps over electro beats on "GhettoMusick". By the time Cee-Lo sermonizes on "Reset", Speakerboxx and Love Below rate mostly as majestic and inspiring, with the remaining 23 per cent being just plain incredible --Dalton Higgins

4 out of 5 stars Andre was great but Big Boi was questionable.......2007-06-04

I think that Outkast's Love Below/Speakerboxxx is unfairly bashed. Andre 3000's album was very innovative. Of course its not a hip hop album but its a creative album with hip hop elements added to it. When any great artist wants to break free from the tedious trend of rap or they just dont want to be confined to just hip hop only they make albums like The Love Below and Electric Circus. The only down side of this project is Big Boi's side Speakerboxxx. Standout Tracks on The Love Below: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY(crazy), SPREAD, PROTOTYPE, SHE LIVES IN MY LAP, HEY YA(before it got played to death by radio), ROSES, BEHOLD A LADY, DRACULA'S WEDDING, MY FAVORITE THINGS(even though its an instrumental Andre hooked it up) and A LIFE IN THE DAY OF BENJAMIN ANDRE(100 bars without slipping a step. FIRE!). Filler: Love Hater(awful) and Pink And Blue(not horrible but i cant get into it at all. Bottom Line: Andre 3000's The Love Below puts Andre above the average just by creativity alone. Not a dull moment on this side of the album. Standout Tracks for Big Boi's Speakerboxxx: GHETTO MUSICK, THE WAY YOU MOVE(before the radio killed it), WAR(Big Boi dropped some gems on here. I'll give him some credit), KNOWING, FLIP FLOP ROCK and RESET. Filler:Unhappy(garbage), Bowtie(what the ? is this?), The Rooster, Tomb Of the Boom(all those people on it and it still stunk),Bust(Killer Mike's verse was cool but the song is still suspect) and Last Call(the worst song on here and was Lil Jon on the hook necessary?). Bottom Line: Big Boi's Speakerboxxx is an obvious rush job. Besides the songs mentioned as standouts, the rest of the album is as bland as wheat bread. As a whole The Love Below/Speakerboxxx should not be missed by any OutKast fan. Andre 3000 side alone makes this a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Ever!!!.......2007-04-13

These are my favorite albums of all time. These albums completely changed me and my prospective on the world. Once I finally got into this double album I felt that anything was possible. It took me about four listens all the way through both discs to really wrap my mind and spirit around it and truly feel how ridiculously amazing and ground breaking this album really was. If OutKast could put so much of their heart and soul forth and put together such a perfect funky, soul, ride of a double album and still teach, move, and inspire so much than there is no telling what I or anyone else could really do. These albums were the first and only "Rap" album to date to ever win the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2003 , but these albums are so much more than "Rap" albums. As a matter of fact Andre 3000's disc "The Love Below" has only four rap verses on it (three by him, one of which goes for the entire length of a song on "A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre (Incomplete") and one by Big Boi). These albums perfectly meld together every genre, feeling, and vibe without taking one millisecond for a breath of air. These albums can be a little hard to keep up with, but if you let Big Boi and Andre 3000 pull you through their kaleidoscope world at their own break neck speed you will not be sorry. Every single song on both discs are amazing, no need to skip. Both discs are completely different Big Boi's disc "Speakerboxxx" is just so perfectly cool and straight up playarific and Andre's album is like nothing you have ever heard (I 100% guarantee that). These albums sound like they fell off a comet from outer space, because they can't possibly be from this planet. By the end of these albums you will be saying stank you smelly much OutKast, stank you smelly much (once you listen to these albums you will understand what I just wrote and I guarantee that you will at least think that).

P.S. It took me four years to get to writing this review. But I wanted to make sure I did these albums justice and listened enough to know every nook and cranny(although every time I listen I hear something new) and I also make sure I described it as best as I could. Although I could describe it a million times better, I needed to get this up already.

4 out of 5 stars 3 stars for tlb ;; 5 for speakerboxxx.......2006-12-21

the love below was okay, but not really my style. if you like more r&b, or slow rap songs, you will probably prefer this cd. i prefer big bois cd much more. i like "harder" rap and all the guest stars. this is still a great collection of songs, and deserved all the nominations it received.

5 out of 5 stars Rap isn't what it used to be, but these two will continue to carry it a long way.......2006-10-23

This double album (one disc by each member), is simply one of the greatest artistic achievements rap has ever seen. You just can't sit down anymore and come up with something like "Happy Valentine's Day" or "She's Alive" in 5 minutes. It takes a brilliant mind to create rap music that is as deeply enchanting as this.

5 out of 5 stars The best Outkast's Album.......2006-08-28

I have been an Outkast fan for almost 10 years. I have got every album they released since Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (which was hard to find in France), released in 1993-1994 in France.
According to me, this double album is their best, even better than Atliens, their second album, which was my favourite before I hear Speakerboxxx / The Love Below.
The strength of this double album is the diversity in music style : hip hop, rnb, jazzy, soul... The overall quality of "The Love Below" sounds higher to me, but Speakerboxxx features some masterpieces like "The Way You Move", "The Rooster", "Flip Flop Rock"...

2 out of 5 stars A few good songs and the rest is no good........2007-01-05

In this album, we have two sides of things. Speakerboxx and the Love Below. Speakerboxx is mostly rap based. Pure hardcore rap. The Love Below is hiphop with some more soul. The Love Below is better. All in all, you are only buying this for 2-4 songs, so you might as well download them.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album - But Come On.......2005-06-29

Yeah this is a great album with songs ranging from jazz to rap and evrything in between but I just want to know - Does anybody remember Outkast? It did not use to be about "TRYING TO BE ORIGINAL" they used to be great MC's. This album is definitely a fall-out in those regards but non-the-less this is a wonderful album and you would not expect anything less from Outkast. Pick this up but if your a fan than you know my pain.

5 out of 5 stars Andre 3000's The Love Below is BRILLIANT.......2005-01-06

I love their latest double CD Album:-Although Big Boi's Speakerboxxx side has some brilliant tracks on them, Andre 3000's The Love Below is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. I cannot stop playing these tracks on The Love Below CD.

( In order of preference )

1) Hey Ya.......(The best song this millennium..PERIOD)

2) Spead ...... (The hook and pull on this song is out of this world. Its like you're speeding home in your car during the night)

3) Happy Valentines day .....(Designed for ALL parties and clubs)

4) Love Hater ....... (This song is full of STYLE)

5) Love in War ...... (Well put together)

6) Dracula's Wedding ......(Exciting cartoon superhero style type of tune)

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2004-10-12

This is such a superb album it is kind of hard to describe. I listined to this album because of all the hype surrounding it. By nature i am not a rap fan, and don't usually even like rap, but this album really captured me like nothing else has in awhile. Listen to the Love Below, and that alone makes it an incredible album. THe love Below is... very creative, to the point of exhaustive genius, and is structured in a way that is like absolutely nothing else. It is very eclectic, with styles ranging from funk to rock, to soul, to almost beat poetry. It enthrolles you with a magnet affect. It is also very artsy, and unconforming to all the rap crap that is spread over the stations with boring stereo typicalisms. These guys are actually willing to concern themselves with the music, the lyrics, and anything else to make an artistic triumph rather than a number one hit. Any band or artist that is willing to be concerned with THE Album, not the hit, is ok in my book. i really hate commercial songs for the sake of popularity, and thankfully they do none of that.
Now... disc two does stray from what Andre 3000 is trying to accomplish, and doesn't provide the same "loveliness" if you will; the melodies are not as creative, the mood is different, but it is still enjoyable. Overall this is an achievement in music i wish i saw more of. Superb.

It is remarkably easy to get washed into the turbulent sea by Dirty Three's gorgeously shambolic instrumental gusts. Compressing gently strummed guitars, sweeping violin, and hints of percussion into forms that suggest everything from mournful Celtic airs to stirring Baltic melodies to the buzzing cacophony of Sonic Youth, Dirty Three are able to sound remarkably fresh and innovative, yet still raw and improvisationally energetic. At times, Dirty Three burn white hot, blazing a path of passion that leads directly to a stirring climax; other times, hardly anything happens except for a plaintive swipe at a guitar and a pensive rap on a drum. Either approach leads to a thoughtful, satisfying musical journey. While not substantially different than either Ocean Songs or Horse Stories--violinist Warren Ellis leads the tune and establishes the pace and melody, guitarist Mick Turner strums with halting subtly, and drummer Jim White adds faint percussive punctuation--there is still plenty of emotional and musical territory to discover on Whatever You Love, You Are. On "Some Summers They Drop Like Flies," a gently plucked violin gives way to a swirling, multitracked melody and a beguiling string tangle from the guitar. On "Stellar," the guitar establishes a hypnotic web of picked notes and whispering chords while the drums and fiddle improvise. At first, it hardly sounds as if a tune will emerge, but one does, slowly, mysteriously, and with all the rough, poetic eloquence that has become Dirty Three's trademark. Whatever You Love, You Are, while not a revelation in the band's career, is yet another wonderful, beguiling, and beautiful piece of music. --S. Duda

1 out of 5 stars Needs to be more .... than this for me to listen.......2004-07-03

This music presents boring and familiar concepts to my ears. It's more about a casting a spell of currently hip-depresso atmosphere and setting a dirgelike pace that, combined, is supposed to create interest or emotion,
but musically it is unsophisticated and that is not because it has a country taste, either - some country is quite clever and authentic. Maybe I've heard too much music but this is like listening to someone's bad music recital.

5 out of 5 stars Love at first site..........2002-12-12

This record has the unfortunate distinction of being one that I liked way too much on first playing. Most of The Dirty Three's output has to slowly grow on me in order to deepen my appreciation for it but this one hit me as a grand, beautiful miasma of sound immediately and as a perhaps bizzare result it doesn't get as much play as my other D3 disks.

That isn't to say that it isn't a wonderful record and the Dirty Three are without a doubt one of my favorite bands of all time. This record lacks the violence of "Horse Stories" and the spiritual confusion of "Ocean Songs". These may be good things for the future but it was the violence and the confusion that made their other records so enjoyable. Keep in mind when I first bought this one I fell in love with it.

Let me put it this way, this may be one of the greatest albums of all time it's just isn't (in my opinion) the greatest Dirty Three record of all time.

I can't wait for their next album!!

1 out of 5 stars ew.......2002-09-04

this is one of the worst cds i've ever made myself sit through.
i can normally find something to enjoy on any cd, but this was hell to listen to.

i'm bummed out, i was excited to get it--but it ....
the band 'low' seems to be the only group good at this type of thing.

i will never listen to this cd again. i almost want to destroy it.
*cry

4 out of 5 stars 3 guys and a whole lotta beautiful noise.......2002-04-23

Dirty Three create quite a dense sound despite being only 3 men thick. The center of the album is definitely the violin, but the guitar and drum are not neglected in terms of importance...they strum and beat along the underlying melodies while the violin soars and dips, wails and cries.

There really are no need for lyrics in these songs because the instruments sing beautifully. You can hear the tortured bliss of Ellis' violin, the longing of Turner's guitar, the White's lazy yet attentive drums (which occasionally explode along with the rest of the music). There are completely natural elements alive in these songs and then there are effects employed that give the sound a more dynamic feel. This is perfectly executed in the third track "I Offered It Up To the Stars & the Night Sky". The song begins with a single violin crying out a cracking melody, and little by little loops of other violins are added in, until at about the 1:15 mark there are about 5 different layers of violins all playing off one another...the song then abruptly changes course for about 4 minutes, while keeping the with the theme, until the multi-layered violins come back to blast your ears with layers upon layers of beauty....one of my favorite songs of all-time. this is extremely affecting music.

And, if for no other reason, buy this album for the artwork. Turner's use of thick brushstrokes and gobs of color, reminicient of Van Gogh, creates an emotional feel that together with the music fleshes out the album's distinctly expressive personality.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but somewhat less approachable than Horse Stories.......2001-11-18

Superb string sounds -- listen to it on a better stereo and you'll discover the most amazing harmonics and string noise.

There's something more heavy or gritty about this disk compared to other Dirty Three work. Horse Stories is an easier albulm to start with.

This is what happens when rap-a-lot puts it's touches on an album. Dirty is a good group, but put them down with the way we do things in H-town and you have a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Boys Way Too Slept On!!!.......2005-03-16

For anyone that listens to hip hop, to not like this album is absurd. Your not listining close enough. This is one of the best southern rap albums ever. I used to listen to them when their first album was released and I was very interested, then I joined the military, and a short time later their second album dropped, and I didn't like one song on it. A year and a half later, while I was deployed in Iraq for the first time, I came across this album and was kind of scepticle due to the lacky second album and their signing with Rap-A-Lot records. But I had to give it a chance. I found this is by far their best album. So many great tracks on it and excelent production and beats. Their flow on "Ain't No Sunshine", is some of the realest s**t I've ever heard. The lyrics hit so close to home it almoast brings tears to my eyes! I really hope they come up because people are missing out on such a damn good thing.

5 out of 5 stars Barbed wire lyrics wrapped around whisky and gravel vocals.......2002-09-05

His sound? Barbed wire lyrics wrapped around whisky and gravel vocals. Hints of Springsteen, Earle and Lucinda Williams abound. But it's the wallop of soul in his passionate vocals and the earthy groove of his melodies that give Picott his own distinct sound.

He's just beginning to hit his stride as a writer; Slaid Cleaves took their co-write "Broke Down" to No.1 on the Americana charts. He's a narrative storyteller tapped into the trials and tribulations of the working class. He intuitively understands heartache, desperation, joy and small hopes (small, not inconsequential) ignore class boundaries. And because of that, his characters possess a certain nobility, a dignified humanity that belies their bleak circumstances. Plus the man can turn a phrase like nobody's business.

Give this man a listen, he's poised to become America's next great songwriter.

    4 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2006-06-10

I picked this up at the record store because I thought it was too weird not to. I've always loved the White Stripes, and I was curious to see what a string quartet could do with their music. Contrary to my expectations, I found the songs to be really cool. I suppose it speaks more for Jack White's brilliant songwriting ability than the actual musicians, but if you are a White Stripes fan you might be surprized with this one.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-02-18

Of the five String Quartet Tribute albums that I have bought, this is by far the weakest, despite the involvement of Tom Tally, whose Coldplay string tribute tracks are far superior to the ones found on this album. The melodies seem particularly discordant in places, and I can't help but wish that I'd bought a different string quartet album, or even perhaps the bluegrass tribute.

    3 out of 5 stars I like it, I like it........2005-12-18

In spite of my age, 78 years, I find my CD of the White Stripes music played by a string quartet growing on me each time I play it. I think the quality of the strings is not good, a pity.

5 out of 5 stars White Stripes Rock!.......2005-11-23

I really like the White Stripes. Their music is alive and kicking, unlike so much over-rehearsed, technologically drowned-out, re-mixed, so-called music these days. This tribute album has the White Stripes musical quality, regardless if it sounds like it is played by a high-school-level string quartet. Heck, the White Stripes sound like a garage-band to me. In either case, the artists make the music sound reachable, as though I could pick up a guitar and play along. This is a quality I look for in music.

1 out of 5 stars the sound of muzak.......2004-02-19

Why is it an honour to be covered by A String Quartet? Anyone can call themselves a string quartet provided they've got four people in one spot holding stringed-instruments. This is White Stripes elevator muzak. If you think simply giving something a 'classical' string treatment affords low-brow rock with some kind of high-brow prestige you don't really love or understand music at all, and you're buying into a bogus notion of orthodoxy. On the other hand, if you're a large business who plans to keep callers on hold for hours on end, buy this now. It'll make a nice change from Vivaldi.

5 out of 5 stars Best Blues band you never heard of...........2006-12-17

Yet. Watch for these guys. It's inevitable that at some point they'll get the national exposure they deserve. I came across them by accident and can't stop listening.
Really the best hard driving Texas guitar Blues I've heard in a long time. Some may make comparisons in part to Stevie Ray, the Thunderbirds, etc. While I think on some songs share some simililarities, I don't think they're derivitive of the genre as say, Los Lonely Boys can be at times. They definitely have their own unique approach and sound...hard to do in a style of music that has been done to death.
Vega's vocals and guitar playing is top notch and the band is tight and balanced. Check out the live album "Yeah, You Right" to hear how tight this band is.
    Check them out.

    Album Description

As acclaimed for her socio-political compositions as for her bottomless repertoire of Anglo-American folk music, Peggy Seeger revisits her traditional roots on "Heading for Home," her 20th solo album.

Aside from the opening, self-penned title track, a meditation on mortality, the other songs on this CD are revived from America's past, including a handful never previously recorded by Peggy. Among those accompanying Peggy's vocals, banjo, dulcimer and guitar are her sons, multi-instrumentalists Neill (formerly of The Bible) and Calum (a Van Morrison sideman), who co-produced the CD, her daughter Kitty on backing vocals, and brother Mike, solo artist and founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers.

The spare instrumentation highlights Peggy's ageless, unaffected vocals on an assortment of songs about love, lust, war, murder, friendship, poverty, class inequality - the compositions may date from the past but are still alive and relevant today. Peggy's prominent, rippling banjo gives many of the songs a tinge of bluegrass and "mountain music," closing the circle between their oft-British origins and subsequent American adaptations.

Like her half-brother Pete and brother Mike, Peggy Seeger simultaneously preserves and extends the situations and plainsung emotions of traditional folk music while emphasizing the undying connections between roots music and modern-day life. "In my head, I try to be constantly involved with the people who made the songs, and to understand why they made them," Peggy told Dirty Linen magazine recently. "Folk music is its own person. It doesn't need us to bring along our individual egos to do something with it."

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Peggy Seeger ... .......2006-10-18

Peggy Seeger has enough talent for three people. Her singing and banjo playing blend very well together. She can sing like a bird and it just seems to flow out so easily. Music samples can't do her justice. When playing this on my stereo system I love to crank up the volume. Peggy has recorded 20 solo albums and contributed to more than 100 other recordings. This is a great CD and and you'll soon find yourself singing along with the tunes.

3 out of 5 stars "Sugar" by any other name would be ..........2006-06-14

This is the London production of the Jule Styne musical "Sugar".

The story was taken from the 1959 Marilyn Munroe Movie, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - but the songs were all original Styne/Merrill numbers.

"Sugar" (the character played by Munroe in the original movie) is a musician who encounters two fellow female musicians. The catch is that they are really men, who have adopted female disguises in a desperate attempt to escape gangsters who want to eliminate them because they have witnessed a gangland slaying.

Much of the appeal of the original movie comes from Miss Munroe's "sexy innocence" - and the fine score by Adolph Deutsch. The musical is frankly not really Jule Styne at his best, although the score does have its moments. Tommy Steele is a bit of an acquired taste too.

One for collectors who want to have their Jule Styne complete (especially if you can't find a copy of the Broadway Version - "Sugar") rather than something you'd rush out to buy, really, but enjoyable enough if you can put Marilyn Munroe and the original (and infinitely better) movie out of your mind.
