While they are at it, KILLERS plays concerts in all France territory with notably a first part of TELEPHONE, gigs with VULCAIN and ADX and a participation that attracted considerable attention to "France Festival" of Choisy le Roi. The group is then contacted by a new record company (Sydney Productions) that commits in the preparation of the second album of KILLERS. Laurent THIBAULT, sound engineer of the famous studio of the Chateau d'Hrouville (Bowie, Higelin, Elton John, Iggy Pop, Patty Smith, Trust, MSG, Rainbow, etc...) is loaded of recording.

KILLERS leaves immediately its third album to the explicit title "Mise aux poings." The eight pieces of this album are always recorded by Laurent THIBAULT during winter 1986/ 1987 and the new band appears immediately to the height of hopes of the always faithful KILLERS' public. The Label Dream Records and a distribution CBS come to sit the new pretensions of KILLERS that asserts to the thread of concerts a devastating energy and without concession.

1988: After a debut of year essentially devoted to the scene and a new change of bass player, Ren CHAVIN replacing Miguel, KILLERS return in studio in July for the recording of its fourth album. The quality of the new compositions seduces again Sydney Productions that decides to associate him to this new missive "Resistances."

1989: Exit of "Resistances" in debut of year. Nine KILLERS' titles that confirm an indisputable musical maturity. Concerts resume up to the end of the year, so the singer decides to put a term to its musical activities.

Secure in the strength of its experience acquired after 5 albums and more of 200 concerts, the debut small groups has reached the maturity of these that, out of modes, remain sincere and fanatics. KILLERS is asserted since all this time as a group that has refused all compromises to impose its style and its identity.

1994: Concert interruption during the year so as to devote fully to the preparation of the sixth album. Alain GARCES rejoins the group to the bass and Fabrice ARNOUTS shoulders Bruno in replacement of Franois and Pascal to guitars. KILLERS makes recording equipment acquisition in the constant concerns from to benefit of a complete autonomy facing the artistic realization of albums to come. The experience gives detachment and KILLERS put on the future in flap eleven new compositions.

1995: By dint of courage and tenacity, KILLERS celebrates in 1995 its ten years of record existence with the exit in March of "Contre courant." A title very revealing of the KILLERS' spirit that researches before all to be made pleasure even if, in order that, it is necessary it to happen the "Media God" blessing. KILLERS is proud to have always been interdependent these that fight to defend their convictions and to make cost their ideas. KILLERS tells clearly in relevant and savory texts, never a thousand years of alarmingly weaknesses that the majors tries to make us pass for monuments of objection. The KILLERS' music isn't as much enclose in a ghetto. It wants also to be made hear these that, in styles a priori different, have nevertheless in common the same concern of authenticity and refusal of all compromising.

1996: Ronan JACQUES arrives and imposes its guitar (in replacement of Fabrice) on the recording of a live album that will exit November end. "Ennemis en public" presents 15 titles whose a resumption of AC/ DC in Basque. Summer is put to profit to prepare the new piece composition that will form the frame the eighth KILLERS' album whose exit is announced for autumn 1997. Year ends with a concert to Pau with Bernard ALLISON and Louis BERTIGNAC. A signature with the Label BRENNUS comes to confirm the success of a well filled year.

1998: KILLERS is back and is even mightier than ever! Their 8th album "Fort interieur" is the living proof of it and it delivers the same Speed Metal with its mountain's taste. After the release of "Ennemis en public," a live recording consisting of 15 tunes, the band wanted to do even better with their new studio album. Bruno's group has recorded 16 tracks with one of the finest French Speed Metal and which brings joy and astonishment to the listeners of this 74 minutes album. Once again they play a very energic and speed-driving Metal-oriented music which break all the pre-conceived rules and all the different old musical fashions. KILLERS has gained his full maturity and provides us with their most magnificent album since their beginning...

        Album Description

"No need to introduce KILLERS, the only French metal band who has been in activity since the 80's. With more than 10 records and a true composition richness, KILLERS enters in the third millenium without any complex towards the ""young"" French bands! After their book, ""Ennemis En Public"", which related a ten-year-old career, their first six studio albums were rereleased. Since then, KILLERS has offered us a new album every year: ""Fort Intérieur"", ""109"", ""Mauvaises Graines"" and in early 2001 ""Killing Games"", the first English version of one of their albums (all in French until now). In 2001, they will also release a new version of ""Mise Aux Poings"", interpreted by Bruno Dolheguy."

5 out of 5 stars Great prog from this short-lived Canadian band.......2006-10-31

Opus 5 was one of many prog rock bands that surfaced in Quebec in the 1970s. The province tended to have their own scene independant from the rest of Canada, and if you're looking to explore that country's prog scene, look to Quebec.

Opus 5 only managed one album in their lifetime, Contre Courant in 1976 on the Célébration label (they recorded a second album around 1977 called Sérieux Au Pas, but did not surface until 1989). This was the same label that Harmonium was on for their first two albums, before that band jumped ship for CBS. Célébration was obviously feeling the need to fill in a hole left off by Harmonium so they signed Opus 5. This group featured keyboardist Olivier du Plessis, guitarist Luc Guthier, flautist Serge Nolet, bassist Christian Leon Racine, and drummer Jean-Pierre Racicot, all credited to vocal duties aside from the drummer. Although there are no ladies in the band, you could swear there are female vocals. That gets me thinking of Änglagård's Hybris (not musically, of course), in which Tord Lindman did the vocals, you think it was a female even if it wasn't. To my best description of Opus 5, if Quebec contemporary Et Cetera did not try to copy the Gentle Giant sound, they'd end up something like this group. There is some folk tendencies in their music giving a comparison to former labelmates Harmonium, but still in a more traditional progressive fashion than Harmonium. There are some jazzy passages, in the drumming. It's also pretty safe to say if you enjoy groups like Harmonium, Et Cetera, Sloche and Maneige, you should enjoy Opus 5 as well. Piano is the most dominant keyboard, but synthesizers (apparently a Minimoog or ARP 2600), Solina string synth, electric piano (Wurlitzer), Hammond B3 organ, and clavicord are keyboards used. The band also gets compared to Canterbury bands like Hatfield & the North, but the band never heard of Hatfield & the North or any other Canterbury band. The music isn't aggressive and in your face like many of those heavy Italian prog bands like Il Balletto di Bronzo, Osanna, Museo Rosenbach, etc. The music tends to be mellower, but not as mellow as the Moody Blues (or Harmonium). The vocals are in French, and tends to be rather dominant throughout the album. I notice as the album progresses, the music gets more complex and there's the occasional piece that shows a Gentle Giant influence (GG was apparently big in Quebec at that time, as a group like Et Cetera was very much like a Quebecois GG, while other groups like Maneige, Sloche, and Pollen showed the GG influence on some of the cuts).

By the way, one cut, "Les Saigneurs" features lyrics with a Quebec nationalist bent, and there's some lyrics that go: "Est-ce normal que de parler l'anglias?" (tran. "Is it normal to speak English?") and then a voice in bad English that goes: "Is it abnormal to speak French?" You can pretty much guarantee with lyrics like that, that they weren't exactly going to win over the Anglo-Canadian audience. Probably didn't matter anyway, because unless a Quebec group sung in English, they weren't likely to break out of Quebec (but then again, any group not singing in English often had trouble breaking out of their own country, look at PFM before they started recording English language albums).

I have to say Opus 5's Contre Courant is right up there with Sloche's J'un Oeil and Stadacone, and the self-entitled albums from Pollen and Et Cetera (I have yet to get albums from Maneige and Harmonium) as far as Quebecois prog rock goes, and this is another great album to start your Quebec prog collection!
