Forget for a moment that you're a sophisticated consumer of music with a mercilessly low tolerance for schlock: Neil Diamond--"Cracklin' Rosie" and "Forever in Blue Jeans" be damned--is going to break your heart. 12 Songs, the hotly anticipated collaboration between Rick Rubin and the formerly jumpsuited Don Juan, exceeds all hopped-up expectations, deflating fans' concerns that their hero might fall flat on the frames of his huge sunglasses in attempting to turn out something hip and harnessing what sounds like decades' worth of untapped, superior songcraft instead. There it is on "Captain of a Shipwreck," a declaration of love that skims the poetic with its promise that "If you're captain of a shipwreck/I'll be first mate to your shame," and around it comes again on "Hell Yeah," a life-affirming, rumor-debunking anthem fairly bursting with bravado (think "I Am...I Said," but with context). Bravado aside, expect no pulled punches here. Rubin's masterful approach is to let Neil Diamond do what Neil Diamond does best, and that is to strap on a loose guitar and let those teflon-ravaged vocals ride over it. Some rides, of course, are smoother than others--Brian Wilson's guest spot on bonus track "Delirious Love" is so melodic and harmony-rich it ought to have sails attached, while "What's It Gonna Be" sounds like something snatched in a pre-dawn lark from a Leonard Cohen disc. All of it is lovely, every last track. A respectful rescripting of the legend, a la the Rubin-aided recasting of Johnny Cash after 2002's American Recordings, is in order. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
One of the year's most heavily-anticipated new releases, 12 Songs pairs the pop music icon with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Producing a Neil Diamond album has been a long-time dream for Rubin, whose extraordinary resume spans the history of hip-hop from LL Cool J to Jay Z, the world of hardcore rock from Slayer to System Of A Down, and the pantheon of mythic stars from Tom Petty and Donovan to Mick Jagger and Johnny Cash's immortal Grammy-winning American Recordings series."Most of the songs were recorded with Neil playing and singing at the same time," said Rick Rubin in a Rolling Stone article (9/22/05) profiling the producer, "and it's a different animal. It's taking him back to being more of a singer-songwriter. He really blows me away."
When it came time to record 12 Songs, Rick Rubin assembled a sympathetic ensemble of musicians to capture the essence of Neil Diamond's extraordinary new songs, each of them a finely-wrought gem, soul-searching, honest, yearning, and powerful.
A core group of musicians made up of Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano/organ) from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers and guitarist Smokey Hormel (Beck, Tom Waits) and other musicians including the renowned Larry Knechtel (piano) and Billy Preston (organ) played on the album.
The track listing for 12 Songs is: "Oh Mary," "Hell Yeah," "Captain of a Shipwreck," "Evermore," "Save Me A Saturday Night," "Delirious Love," "I'm On To You," "What's It Gonna Be," "Man of God," "Create Me," "Face Me," and "We." A special digipak edition of 12 Songs features two bonus tracks: "Men Are So Easy" and an alternate version of "Delirious Love" with guest artist Brian Wilson.
" .judging by eight finished tracks," wrote Lorraine Ali, previewing 12 Songs for Newsweek (August 1, 2005), "this is the best work Diamond has done in 30 years."

Is it really a surprise?.......2007-07-30
How about 6 stars?.......2007-04-12
Neil has a powerful sense of melody - a certain taste for something deep, nostalgic and soul-full - and I always thought that he was never appreciated as he should have been. Even when they were B class, his lyrics still had a certain thing about them that is hard to describe. His "Done too soon" and "Coldwater morning" always sent an arrow into my heart. Yeah, I know that he went in for some really overdone back-up music but I just saw this as an untapped classical potential, and some of his stage performances were seriously criticized by the "snobs", but heck! He was having fun with it! What's wrong with that? Some of his music would be well-suited for orchestral arrangement and performance in my opinion.
When I heard about a new album, I was afraid to listen - afraid that maybe my impressions had been illusory and I would have to encounter a Neil Diamond who wasn't what I thought he was.
Well, I'm so happy I bought the album! It's more Neil, real and deeper and just being himself to the max. There are songs on this album that are so catchy that they are absolutely classic! It's as though he writes songs that NEED to be written...
I understand that the album is also the last ever performance by organ player Billy Preston, who died in June 2006. That's especially poignant when you listen to "Man of God" with the strong organ back-up.
The more spiritual songs such as "Create Me" and the above mentioned "Man Of God") are among my favorites.
For the critics of Neil, I say listen to "Hell Yeah".

The Life and Times of Neil Diamond.......2007-01-16
With great disappointment I watched him "backseat" his talent as a writer (ie employing "co-writers"; recording covers and Christmas albums) as he rose to (well deserved)superstardom as a performer.
Then, as he entered his seventh decade, the old Neil Diamond began to emerge. First with "Three Chord Opera" and later with the Rubin produced "12 Songs". As if, sensing his own mortality, Neil Diamond recognized he had to deliver whatever music he had left in him. The era of three year "time outs" was long gone.
So take it or leave it, he delivered "12 Songs". If you're looking for another "Sweet Caroline" look elsewhere. If "September Morn" is more your taste, you might also be disappointed. As Rolling Stone noted, this is not an album of easy listening music.
This is an album of music by a master of interpersonal songcraft reflecting his thoughts and feelings in the autumn of his life. It is beautiful, at times lonely, and ultimately a little sad. We're all travelling down the same path as Neil Diamond.
Don't look for "12 Songs" to grab you on first listen. This is not sing along music. But I can't help thinking that any true fan of Neil Diamond, whether s/he signed on in the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's or 00's, should find something to treasure in these songs.
So I hope you can enjoy it as much as I have.

One of the most critically acclaimed records of the year, Neil Diamond's "12 Songs" is now available in a Deluxe Package (just in time for the holidays). A 2-disc limited edition release of the legendary musician's sparse and soulful original album includes never heard before behind-the-scenes material from the Rick Rubin sessions. Disc One is the original cut of the much heralded album "12 Songs" plus two bonus tracks; 'Men are So Easy' and the amazing single; "Delirious Love" featuring Brian Wilson. Disc Two is the special release "Artist's Cut - 12 Sketches". This music lovers' collectible offers a rare and groundbreaking look into Neil's creative process, featuring alternate takes, demos, early versions and an exclusive insight into his first time collaboration with uber hip producer Rick Rubin.Customer Reviews:

12 (or 14) Songs.......2007-03-30
The 2-CD Limited Edition is a revelation, but of course more so for die-hard fans than for casual listeners. Diamond fans will recall having gotten a taste of this in the "In My Lifetime" collection. Speaking as objectively as possible, however, it is a rare insight into the evolution of individual songs, and of an entire album in general. For all the hoopla about Rick Rubin's "unplugged" approach, one of the most fascinating aspects of the Limited Edition is the variety of introductions used. I'm probably not the only Diamond fan whose favorite cut from the original album is "Evermore" because of the sweeping arrangement in the latter part of the song, and I'm glad that this collection gave us the opportunity to hear alternative arrangements for Diamond songs other than live renditions. Granted the Sony anti-dubbing virus was a major put-off (except for Mac users like me), and less-rabid admirers may prefer the more economical route of Internet downloading, but few can deny that either the original set or the Limited Edition present a very welcome addition to any music collection.
To make a long story short, why haven't you checked it out yet?

It's different - but terrific!.......2006-02-18
You must make up your own mind.......2004-09-17
On this album, Neil records a number of songs written by songwriters he knew in the early sixties (though some songs here are from the fifties). He wrote the liner notes, discussing the various songwriters. Almost as an afterthought, he provides a list of the original artists, though some of the songs have actually become more famous by other, later versions.
You've lost that loving feeling, as performed here, sounds very different from the original version by the Righteous brothers. Neil had the great idea of doing it as a duet with Dolly Parton and (to my ears) it works superbly, bringing a freshness to the song.
Do wah diddy diddy, originally a minor American hit for the Exciters, topped the charts in Britain and America after Manfred Mann covered it. Neil performs this with Mary's Danish.
The remaining songs are all solo performances by Neil and include three songs that were American hits for the Drifters (Up on the roof, Save the last dance for me, Sweets for my sweet) and two for Ben E King (I who have nothing, Spanish Harlem). These songs were all hits in Britain but sometimes via cover versions by British artists.
Another classic song, River deep mountain high, was a top three UK hit for Ike and Tina Turner but only a minor American hit for them. In the early seventies, it became a hit again when covered by the Supremes and Four Tops. It was a top twenty hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
This album contains other great songs made famous by Dionne Warwick (Don't make me over, Do you know the way to San Jose), the Mindbenders (A groovy kind of love), Neil Sedaka (Happy birthday sweet sixteen), the Shirelles (Will you love me tomorrow) and Elvis Presley (Don't be cruel). Love potion number nine, originally recorded by the Clovers, is better known via a cover by the Searchers.
Ten lonely guys, a minor American hit for Pat Boone, was Neil's first taste of success as a songwriter. Even so, he was one of ten co-writers.
So, this is a collection of classic songs from the fifties and early sixties as covered by one of America's enduring performers. The question you have to ask yourself is - Do you like Neil's covers of these songs? Only you can answer that. I can say that I love them.

The Neil Diamond repackaging industry reached deluge levels in the '90s, as the man became an even bigger touring act than ever. This relatively early set, though, goes light on the hits--of the singer's myriad big singles, only "Play Me" and "Stones" are included. Instead, Diamond's Uni-era LPs are mined for covers of Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and other late-'60s heavies, along with a handful of originals ("And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind"). Hardly a major addition to anyone's Neil collection, Love Songs is nonetheless sure to please fans of that deep, deep voice. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Emphathetic Lyrics Portraying Love-Lost \ Love-Found........1998-06-30
Diamond's words cause our most poignant desires to love and be loved, to take flight, gliding through ethereal heavens in dream-like gracefulness.
Sometimes the images arising in our minds from Diamond's lyrics overpower sense and sensation. Almost immediately we know our delicate hearts have been exposed to an affective probe that ferrets out each hidden pain and tortured memory we can never seem to let go of. Still, amazingly, we open ourselves further to a consumated discovery.
Diamond's "Love Songs" refreshens and restores our sensitivities to the excessive price we all pay to open ourselves to loving and being loved. His words make us brave enough to risk it all over, again and again. Diamond's word's makes us believe that to accept anything less is to really die a sad and lonely and worthless death.

Diamond in the rough.......2005-11-26
Stripped down and roughened up, Diamond comes off less as "The Jewish Elvis" and more like a biblical voice of old (see Johnny Cash, the Rubin years). There is wisdom, grace, and power in Diamond's voice and words, recapturing a vitality and dynamic that he has not displayed in seeming aeons. He sounds warm, yet defiant and fiesty also.
"Oh Mary" is a simple song who's power is in its very understatement...the longing and pathos in Diamond's voice is palpable. "Hell Yeah" is a triumph, it's Diamond's "My Way," but you get the sense that Diamond still has more life left in him, rather than being simply an epitaph. Other highlights include "Evermore," with it's building intensity, and the giddy, swinging "Delirious Love." I loved the simplicity, spirituality, and conviction of "Man of God," and the directness of "Face Me."
There is no filler here on this CD; no false moves or phony moments. Here is the sound of a seasoned, successful artist re-discovering the joy of daring and risk-taking and KNOWING that somehow it's really, really working well. While some of the songs have serious themes, there is an underlying sense of pleasure throughout; for Diamond as he performs and the listeners as we take it all in .
Musically, the sound here is spare...Diamond's acoustic guitar, with the occasional light orchestral flourish or soulful organ or spritely piano. But make no mistake; simplicity is by no means uninviting here. Quite the contrary--12 SONGS by Neil Diamond draws in the listener and doesn't let go even long after the disc has finished spinning.
