Forget for a moment that you're a sophisticated consumer of music with a mercilessly low tolerance for schlock: Neil Diamond--"Cracklin' Rosie" and "Forever in Blue Jeans" be damned--is going to break your heart. 12 Songs, the hotly anticipated collaboration between Rick Rubin and the formerly jumpsuited Don Juan, exceeds all hopped-up expectations, deflating fans' concerns that their hero might fall flat on the frames of his huge sunglasses in attempting to turn out something hip and harnessing what sounds like decades' worth of untapped, superior songcraft instead. There it is on "Captain of a Shipwreck," a declaration of love that skims the poetic with its promise that "If you're captain of a shipwreck/I'll be first mate to your shame," and around it comes again on "Hell Yeah," a life-affirming, rumor-debunking anthem fairly bursting with bravado (think "I Am...I Said," but with context). Bravado aside, expect no pulled punches here. Rubin's masterful approach is to let Neil Diamond do what Neil Diamond does best, and that is to strap on a loose guitar and let those teflon-ravaged vocals ride over it. Some rides, of course, are smoother than others--Brian Wilson's guest spot on bonus track "Delirious Love" is so melodic and harmony-rich it ought to have sails attached, while "What's It Gonna Be" sounds like something snatched in a pre-dawn lark from a Leonard Cohen disc. All of it is lovely, every last track. A respectful rescripting of the legend, a la the Rubin-aided recasting of Johnny Cash after 2002's American Recordings, is in order. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

One of the year's most heavily-anticipated new releases, 12 Songs pairs the pop music icon with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Producing a Neil Diamond album has been a long-time dream for Rubin, whose extraordinary resume spans the history of hip-hop from LL Cool J to Jay Z, the world of hardcore rock from Slayer to System Of A Down, and the pantheon of mythic stars from Tom Petty and Donovan to Mick Jagger and Johnny Cash's immortal Grammy-winning American Recordings series.

"Most of the songs were recorded with Neil playing and singing at the same time," said Rick Rubin in a Rolling Stone article (9/22/05) profiling the producer, "and it's a different animal. It's taking him back to being more of a singer-songwriter. He really blows me away."

When it came time to record 12 Songs, Rick Rubin assembled a sympathetic ensemble of musicians to capture the essence of Neil Diamond's extraordinary new songs, each of them a finely-wrought gem, soul-searching, honest, yearning, and powerful.

A core group of musicians made up of Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano/organ) from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers and guitarist Smokey Hormel (Beck, Tom Waits) and other musicians including the renowned Larry Knechtel (piano) and Billy Preston (organ) played on the album.

The track listing for 12 Songs is: "Oh Mary," "Hell Yeah," "Captain of a Shipwreck," "Evermore," "Save Me A Saturday Night," "Delirious Love," "I'm On To You," "What's It Gonna Be," "Man of God," "Create Me," "Face Me," and "We." A special digipak edition of 12 Songs features two bonus tracks: "Men Are So Easy" and an alternate version of "Delirious Love" with guest artist Brian Wilson.

"….judging by eight finished tracks," wrote Lorraine Ali, previewing 12 Songs for Newsweek (August 1, 2005), "this is the best work Diamond has done in 30 years."

5 out of 5 stars Is it really a surprise?.......2007-07-30

I have spent years disliking Neil Diamond. Too 'Las Vegas', too much Mr Showbiz, too much of nothing as Bob Dylan would say. But going back to the days of Sweet Caroline & Cracklin' Rosie I used to love him. What happened in-between? 12 Songs means it doesn't matter what happened. This album has completely blown me away. It is direct, sincere, has the Rubin 'less is more' approach and each song is brilliantly sung and communicated. He writes from the heart here and sings like it all matters. If you felt like I did don't ignore this cd as I was tempted to. Even when I bought it I left the shop in a 'why' frame of mind. Why? Just listen. It is a magnificent record. All great songs but if I had to pick one it would have to be 'Evermore' which made the hairs on my back stand up. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars How about 6 stars?.......2007-04-12

Of course I'm prejudiced; I've been a Neil Diamond fan since I was a young teen... I had all his albums until I moved some years ago and had to regretfully streamline my collection of "stuff". I have since replaced all of them with CD versions and they are better than ever.

Neil has a powerful sense of melody - a certain taste for something deep, nostalgic and soul-full - and I always thought that he was never appreciated as he should have been. Even when they were B class, his lyrics still had a certain thing about them that is hard to describe. His "Done too soon" and "Coldwater morning" always sent an arrow into my heart. Yeah, I know that he went in for some really overdone back-up music but I just saw this as an untapped classical potential, and some of his stage performances were seriously criticized by the "snobs", but heck! He was having fun with it! What's wrong with that? Some of his music would be well-suited for orchestral arrangement and performance in my opinion.

When I heard about a new album, I was afraid to listen - afraid that maybe my impressions had been illusory and I would have to encounter a Neil Diamond who wasn't what I thought he was.

Well, I'm so happy I bought the album! It's more Neil, real and deeper and just being himself to the max. There are songs on this album that are so catchy that they are absolutely classic! It's as though he writes songs that NEED to be written...

I understand that the album is also the last ever performance by organ player Billy Preston, who died in June 2006. That's especially poignant when you listen to "Man of God" with the strong organ back-up.

The more spiritual songs such as "Create Me" and the above mentioned "Man Of God") are among my favorites.

For the critics of Neil, I say listen to "Hell Yeah".

5 out of 5 stars thanks again, rick rubin!.......2007-04-03

neil diamond has always had a great voice. what he hasn't always had is a producer who can take that incredible voice and craft it into a great album. well, rick rubin is as good a producer as can be found. his work with johnny cash was astonshing. now mr diamond gets the same treatment. the resulting album is a stunning piece of work, showcasing a stark, uncluttered sound that is pristine and gorgeous. a great set of songs from beginning to end, sung with breathtaking sensitivity and skill. Q magazine selected this as the 19th best album of 2006. great stuff, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Aged to perfection!.......2007-01-19

There is not one song in this selection that I didn't like as soon as I heard
it. Neil's voice is so rich in these songs and the lyrics are outstanding
with life experiences behind it. Just sit back ... listen...and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Neil Diamond.......2007-01-16

I've loved Neil Diamond's songwriting for almost as long as I can remember.
With great disappointment I watched him "backseat" his talent as a writer (ie employing "co-writers"; recording covers and Christmas albums) as he rose to (well deserved)superstardom as a performer.
Then, as he entered his seventh decade, the old Neil Diamond began to emerge. First with "Three Chord Opera" and later with the Rubin produced "12 Songs". As if, sensing his own mortality, Neil Diamond recognized he had to deliver whatever music he had left in him. The era of three year "time outs" was long gone.
So take it or leave it, he delivered "12 Songs". If you're looking for another "Sweet Caroline" look elsewhere. If "September Morn" is more your taste, you might also be disappointed. As Rolling Stone noted, this is not an album of easy listening music.
This is an album of music by a master of interpersonal songcraft reflecting his thoughts and feelings in the autumn of his life. It is beautiful, at times lonely, and ultimately a little sad. We're all travelling down the same path as Neil Diamond.
Don't look for "12 Songs" to grab you on first listen. This is not sing along music. But I can't help thinking that any true fan of Neil Diamond, whether s/he signed on in the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's or 00's, should find something to treasure in these songs.
So I hope you can enjoy it as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars 12 (or 14) Songs.......2007-03-30

It's been interesting to read the various reviews of Neil Diamond's "12 Songs" album. Opinions are basically unanimous that it's his strongest album in a long time, and I can't disagree with that. Over the last 30 years, the number of albums from which I've really liked most of the songs has been in the minority. That said, there have always been at least a few gems for me, and I've had no trouble remaining a loyal fan, especially since the Internet made it easier for me to attend some concerts (I moved to Japan in 1979 and usually don't come back more than 1-2 times a year). That said, "12 Songs" simply blew me away. Pity to the person who decides to save an insignificant amount of money by buying the 12-song collection: the Brian Wilson-enhanced version of "Delirious Love" (which has amusingly received more mixed reviews than probably any other song on the album) is a historic meeting of musical legends, and I suspect it was a wrenching decision to omit "Men Are So Easy" from the basic set. With only one or two exceptions, every song has something to say to anybody who will take the time to listen. In other words, those willing to give it a chance will find it a revelation; Diamond fans will agree with the Man's opinion that the songs in question are not a radical departure from anything else he's put out over the years. After all, Rick Rubin didn't do any of the writing!

The 2-CD Limited Edition is a revelation, but of course more so for die-hard fans than for casual listeners. Diamond fans will recall having gotten a taste of this in the "In My Lifetime" collection. Speaking as objectively as possible, however, it is a rare insight into the evolution of individual songs, and of an entire album in general. For all the hoopla about Rick Rubin's "unplugged" approach, one of the most fascinating aspects of the Limited Edition is the variety of introductions used. I'm probably not the only Diamond fan whose favorite cut from the original album is "Evermore" because of the sweeping arrangement in the latter part of the song, and I'm glad that this collection gave us the opportunity to hear alternative arrangements for Diamond songs other than live renditions. Granted the Sony anti-dubbing virus was a major put-off (except for Mac users like me), and less-rabid admirers may prefer the more economical route of Internet downloading, but few can deny that either the original set or the Limited Edition present a very welcome addition to any music collection.

To make a long story short, why haven't you checked it out yet?

5 out of 5 stars Oh my god ! the Neil I loved is back !.......2007-03-26

There was a long time when I could buy any record of Neil Diamond without even listening first, his music was gold for me, I have probably 30 lps of that period, then a little after the jazz singer record, his music lost power for me, to the point that, some years later, I could not even listen to his later material,it was like a never recovered sadness for me as I felt that Neil had lost his soul..And I had lost so much..
Then came today when I heard these new songs and they thrilled me right to the heart. For the first time in years his vocals dominate the music they difuse a lot of emotion and they are the heart of each song.
Neil; today you gained again a very devoted fan and I'm so happy that you could find your way back to very deep music.
Only Neil Diamond can beat Neil Diamond !
I highly recommend this cd to all the fans who loved "I am I said" "
"Now he's back I said"

I wish a lot of success to this very good CD as this is what it really deserves.

5 out of 5 stars It's different - but terrific!.......2006-02-18

It's definitely not the usual Neil Diamond we've known, but I immediately was spell-bound by the beautiful acoustics and soulful beats of the songs on this CD. I was completely mesmerized by the new renditions. The only song I didn't care for was the one with Dolly Pardon,as I thought her voice ruined the song. This, however, was overshadowed by the many others included which were wonderful. You will either hate this "different" Neil Diamond - or love him. - I love him!

5 out of 5 stars You must make up your own mind.......2004-09-17

It is clear that opinion is divided regarding this collection of covers. Personally, I love it, but I note that some Neil Diamond fans only like his original material, claiming that his particular style is not suited to covers. Neil clearly enjoys doing covers. Apart from this album, he's recorded an album of movie songs and two Christmas albums. He's also included covers on some of his other albums.

On this album, Neil records a number of songs written by songwriters he knew in the early sixties (though some songs here are from the fifties). He wrote the liner notes, discussing the various songwriters. Almost as an afterthought, he provides a list of the original artists, though some of the songs have actually become more famous by other, later versions.

You've lost that loving feeling, as performed here, sounds very different from the original version by the Righteous brothers. Neil had the great idea of doing it as a duet with Dolly Parton and (to my ears) it works superbly, bringing a freshness to the song.

Do wah diddy diddy, originally a minor American hit for the Exciters, topped the charts in Britain and America after Manfred Mann covered it. Neil performs this with Mary's Danish.

The remaining songs are all solo performances by Neil and include three songs that were American hits for the Drifters (Up on the roof, Save the last dance for me, Sweets for my sweet) and two for Ben E King (I who have nothing, Spanish Harlem). These songs were all hits in Britain but sometimes via cover versions by British artists.

Another classic song, River deep mountain high, was a top three UK hit for Ike and Tina Turner but only a minor American hit for them. In the early seventies, it became a hit again when covered by the Supremes and Four Tops. It was a top twenty hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

This album contains other great songs made famous by Dionne Warwick (Don't make me over, Do you know the way to San Jose), the Mindbenders (A groovy kind of love), Neil Sedaka (Happy birthday sweet sixteen), the Shirelles (Will you love me tomorrow) and Elvis Presley (Don't be cruel). Love potion number nine, originally recorded by the Clovers, is better known via a cover by the Searchers.

Ten lonely guys, a minor American hit for Pat Boone, was Neil's first taste of success as a songwriter. Even so, he was one of ten co-writers.

So, this is a collection of classic songs from the fifties and early sixties as covered by one of America's enduring performers. The question you have to ask yourself is - Do you like Neil's covers of these songs? Only you can answer that. I can say that I love them.

1 out of 5 stars Oh no no no.......2000-12-14

From one of his own great songs - "Oh no no no". I reviewed "The Film Album" saying Neil is a great writer and singer - but not of other peoples material. This album just proves my point. "Don't Be Cruel" - don't sing it again. I listened to it wondering if I could hear Elvis spinning in his grave. Stick to your own material Neil, you're superb at that, but please please not this.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! this is soooo great.......2000-05-31

when i first picked up this CD, i was going through my 5th divorce- and i was having a hard time coping with my pain. Neil, "neily baby", as i like to call him- really spoke to my heart with this one. i wouldnt have made it through the 5th wife without this record. i have since married again to a 17 year old cheerleader from my sons high school class, and i still love this records fine instrumentation with neils soft emotive voice. 5 STARS!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Music To My Ears.......2005-06-16

This compilation of some of Neil Diamond's love songs is first class. The only thing that I would have liked was to have the studio versions of Red Red Wine & Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon.
Neil Diamond has been a favourte of mine since his first recordings back in the sixties and even though I have most of these songs on other CDs, it is a nice collection to listen to in the car or just for relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful love songs for the heart.......2004-03-12

This is one of Neil Diamond best compilations of romantic songs. Most of the songs sound so fresh, and rich with love and passion. His pure young voice makes songs like Juliet, Modern Day Version of Love, If I Never Knew Your Name, If You Go Away and Last Thing of My Mind deeply felt in the heart and sets it towards moods of love and softness. And I think 'Juliet' is the best of all songs and I agree with Lee Armstrong that it is filled with such a strong loving yearning and then a superb release. His other famous songs like 'The grass won't pay no mind' and 'Sweet Caroline' combine with other romantic songs makes it one of the best Neil's CD for collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Diamond.......2003-10-04

While "Love Songs" is certainly not the only Neil Diamond compilation on the market, MCA did an excellent job of assembling Neil's more romantic efforts from their catalogue. The packaging and digital remastering give a high sound quality. Both as a songwriter and interpreter, Neil's classic songs boast unique melodies and expressive vocals. "Sweet Caroline" is as gorgeous a melody as it was when it first played. "Juliet" is filled with such loving yearning that when Neil hits the "la la la la" chorus, we find a superb release. Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Until It's Time for You to Go" is one of the most beautiful melodies & Neil nails the lyric, "We'll make a space in the lives that we've planned." "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" was my favorite of Neil's albums; and "If I Never Knew Your Name" from that set floats gracefully above the strings. "Play Me" & "Cracklin' Rosie" still sound fresh to my ears. Roger Miller's "Husbands & Wives" sets your mind to thinking while it sets your toe to tapping. Neil's version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" doesn't quite edge out Jennifer Warnes, but it's certainly a joy. From his "Velvet Gloves & Spit" album, Neil's "Modern Day Version of Love" is wistfully romantic, "Gave not at all, got back as much." The CD closes with two classic live versions from his "Hot August Night" album of "Red, Red Wine" & "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon." "Love Songs" is not startlingly new, but it is technically excellent as well as some of Neil's best romantic material on one disc. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Definition of bad.......2006-03-03

Look bad up in the dictionary, you should see the picture of this CD. If I was more industrious, I'd use Roget to fill the rest of this space with euphemisms for bad. If I could return it, I would.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful love songs.......2006-03-01

This is a great album. It is wonderful to be hearing such beautiful new love songs written by someone from my generation. They may not rock like his songs of the 70's but they have the same style and passion...thank you for sharing the music of your heart with your fans.

5 out of 5 stars Not for just baby boomers.......2006-02-24

I saw a segment on CBS Sunday Morning about this album and thought that it would be great as a gift for a relative. The relative loved it, but when we listened to it together I realized that I did too! This album is not like the Neil Diamond of the 70's and 80's... take a listen to see what I mean.
As for the Digi-Pak with bonus tracks, I like having the extra 2 songs, but I don't see the point of the digital part. I thought this meant I would get to download the album (I did pay for it!), but it was only a streaming segment that was available for only 2 weeks - what is the point of that?

The Neil Diamond repackaging industry reached deluge levels in the '90s, as the man became an even bigger touring act than ever. This relatively early set, though, goes light on the hits--of the singer's myriad big singles, only "Play Me" and "Stones" are included. Instead, Diamond's Uni-era LPs are mined for covers of Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and other late-'60s heavies, along with a handful of originals ("And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind"). Hardly a major addition to anyone's Neil collection, Love Songs is nonetheless sure to please fans of that deep, deep voice. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars If all artists would give us what Diamond gave us here..........2000-04-28

Everyone knows Neil Diamond's voice immediately. We want to hear it. We know it. It is comfortable. Does anyone not feel like we know Neil Diamond personally? While we thrill to albums like "Hot August night" or "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" it is albums like this that forever connect us to the soul of an artist. It is not simply the songs (everyone has recorded virtually all of these at one time or another), it is not simply the production (although beautiful, it is pretty predictable actually), and it is not a smashing performance (some of the delivery seems a little contrived in places). This album goes far beyond these aspects. It is the phenomenal experience of sitting in a room with this master song-crafter and song-singer while he weaves a unique magic with each one. And we listen. And we will never hear anyone do what he does again. "Suzanne" has drifted off to sleep with me for several nights in a row at times leaving lingering glorious images and dreams of oceans, sailors and that ever-elusive fantasy woman. Neil Diamond does here what he does the best, and what no one else will ever be able to do. A marvelous work of art from a marvelous performer. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Will there be not a trace left behind . . ........2000-03-30

This is a great album from a man who would write many songs over the course of his life and make many preformances, but everything before and after pales in comparison to the quality of this unique and spiritually moving recording. Neil Diamond has made a career in projecting himself in terms of some kind of neo-Tom Jones. It is here that I find myself adrift in the copius ejaculate of this man, searching for the true gem; all the time wondering where the real magic is that he created so skillfully. I shouldn't bring a negative light to this part of his life, but when a man ages, he does reach out for what he once had, and when you think you are doing it for the sake of entertaining others, something gets lost. But I guess that is ok too. The facts stand by themselves, he was adored for this style of songwriting and composing found here, not for that cowboy-esque portrayel he created for himself on the screen. "If you go away" is undoubtably, the most profound thing this man will leave in his legacy. And I assure you, if you'll really listen, it will be this album that he'll be remembered for when it's all said and done. This is the real Neil Diamond, his hearts true message.

5 out of 5 stars For the romantic moments of life.......1999-10-13

Heart warming songs for the very special moments of live. Some of the best yet not the most popular songs of Neil such as "Susan" or "If you go away". Truly an outstanding album!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best pieces I've ever heard.......1998-08-05

Deep feelings, sensitive sounds, excellent instrumentation. 'Love Songs' is a very special collection of beautiful songs coming from this profoundly original artist.

5 out of 5 stars Emphathetic Lyrics Portraying Love-Lost \ Love-Found........1998-06-30

Neil Diamond's "Love Songs" capture the ache in our hearts when our best efforts at love fail miserably or succeed fulfillingly. They convey the desperate longing for one more chance to make it all right again or to rekindle anew the comfortably passionate relationship providing the staying power of abiding love.

Diamond's words cause our most poignant desires to love and be loved, to take flight, gliding through ethereal heavens in dream-like gracefulness.

Sometimes the images arising in our minds from Diamond's lyrics overpower sense and sensation. Almost immediately we know our delicate hearts have been exposed to an affective probe that ferrets out each hidden pain and tortured memory we can never seem to let go of. Still, amazingly, we open ourselves further to a consumated discovery.

Diamond's "Love Songs" refreshens and restores our sensitivities to the excessive price we all pay to open ourselves to loving and being loved. His words make us brave enough to risk it all over, again and again. Diamond's word's makes us believe that to accept anything less is to really die a sad and lonely and worthless death.

Love songs by Neil Diamond - he was made to sing these kind of songs. No matter how many times you hear these classic love songs like "Sweet Caroline" and "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" they still come through as fresh and alive. Great songs to be listened with alone but much better with your special someone. His best CD collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond 12 Songs Review.......2007-01-31

Suberb...the best Neil Diamond CD in many years...goes back to the style of music that made him so popular. If you are a Neil Diamond fan, this is a must have CD. Can be played over and over again without getting tired of the music. I like to store CDs on my computer and play back while working...the copy protected version, however, has seemingly caused some problems (i.e. Music Match program crashing) so I have erased it from my system...absolutely no problem on home stereo, CD player, etc. Interestingly, this CD will not even play on my system at work...doesn't recognize anything in the CD drawer. Sony recalled this version of the CD and has replaced it with a version that does not cause problems (or so I've heard).

    3 out of 5 stars 12 Songs + a couple..........2005-12-30

Well I've read all the comments, interesting, I'm 45 now, I've followed diamond since I think I was 12, I have had respect for his style and taste for his dreams and for his music all the way through these years, so in other words, I have come to like, love and enjoy each and every song, though I do have a most favorites list. Now we have "12 Songs" give or take, for as much of a fan I am, I'd say most albums have taken a couple of listening to's to let it grab you, to listen to the lyrics then pick up on the music and have a drink or two, listen again and then make judgment...because I'm currently dieting, I can't have the drink or two, but I'm sure this new album will sink into my skin very soon. I have always enjoyed singing along with Neil, I can easily sit in his register without a problem, and there is no doubt his voice is changing with time, I suspect he still smokes too, naughty lad!...but I'm going to have to listen to this new album a few times to let it in, it's different, I definitely like the close and personal feel, I like the simple approach with less instrumentation which makes it sound uncluttered and therefore distinctive, I must admit that "Oh Mary" is a little funny, not exactly the way I would have sung it i.e. not so many of the "Oh Mary" especially the parts sung in the lower soft register and repeated, I wouldn't have sung it, spoken it, whatever...but I'll still respect what Neil has done and will do and until my own dying day, hurry back to Melbourne Neil get that Aussie girl to convince you Australia is the place to live!!....."thank you Neil you've been fantastic"

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough.......2005-11-26

This is Neil Diamond like we haven't heard him since the 1960s, or maybe ever. Paired brilliantly with Producer Rick Rubin, music legend Diamond is corralled with his guitar, a microphone, and a batch of stellar songs, and the result is more intoxicating than red, red wine.

Stripped down and roughened up, Diamond comes off less as "The Jewish Elvis" and more like a biblical voice of old (see Johnny Cash, the Rubin years). There is wisdom, grace, and power in Diamond's voice and words, recapturing a vitality and dynamic that he has not displayed in seeming aeons. He sounds warm, yet defiant and fiesty also.

"Oh Mary" is a simple song who's power is in its very understatement...the longing and pathos in Diamond's voice is palpable. "Hell Yeah" is a triumph, it's Diamond's "My Way," but you get the sense that Diamond still has more life left in him, rather than being simply an epitaph. Other highlights include "Evermore," with it's building intensity, and the giddy, swinging "Delirious Love." I loved the simplicity, spirituality, and conviction of "Man of God," and the directness of "Face Me."

There is no filler here on this CD; no false moves or phony moments. Here is the sound of a seasoned, successful artist re-discovering the joy of daring and risk-taking and KNOWING that somehow it's really, really working well. While some of the songs have serious themes, there is an underlying sense of pleasure throughout; for Diamond as he performs and the listeners as we take it all in .

Musically, the sound here is spare...Diamond's acoustic guitar, with the occasional light orchestral flourish or soulful organ or spritely piano. But make no mistake; simplicity is by no means uninviting here. Quite the contrary--12 SONGS by Neil Diamond draws in the listener and doesn't let go even long after the disc has finished spinning.

5 out of 5 stars Rate Diamond or Sony ?.......2005-11-25

Although I don't completely understand the background and the problems with that SONY XCP and why Diamond and Rubin possibly agreed to that process - I think we should rate the music of that album - so I do. During a 2 week travel in the US I heard 12 Songs, liked it a lot - so all my American friends did - and we bought it. I really appreciate Diamond for trying this "back to the roots" after so many years of different intentions. Exept for 1 or 2 "quite ok songs" that album is absolutely great, deserves 5 stars and a better and more professional promotion by Sony.

    5 out of 5 stars WELCOME BACK...NEIL !!!.......2005-11-24

THE BEST !!! After I ripped open my Amazon delivery this week, I have listened to this just released Neil Diamond CD non-stop. Each play sounds even better. The music, lyrics and arrangements are the best, in my opinion. There is the Neil we remember, and there is a New Neil to welcome. A great combination of Diamond and Rubin. Thanks for your efforts and accomplishment.
