The most amazing thing about this Beatle record was/is that it transcends the musical experience. Keep in mind that in 1967, there was no MTV or VH1. When this record was playing your imagination went wild! It was like your own personal movie in your head. It starts like being at the theatre and then you go everywhere imagineable... sitting on a sofa with meter maid, inside the home of well meaning parents, going to the freak show circus, attending a church-like service with sitar, dreaming of growing old with the one you love, sitting in a high school class p*ssed off at the world, overcoming dysfunctional relations, riding in a boat, witnessing an accident, watching a fox hunt, reading a book, WOW. And everyone saw it there own personal way, no two imaginations are alike. The Beatles took you to a magical place within your own being with this record. I am grateful that there was no video to ruin it! BRAVO Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! A Day in the Life is a masterpiece.

A classic.......2007-07-31

Sgt. Pepper deserves to be considered one of the greatest achievements in popular music. This issue is good quality and includes a nice booklet that explains the album - including a diagram of who's who on the cover picture.

Just a very good Beatles playlist.......2007-07-31

Is this the greatest album ever? It probably is in terms of influence, from packaging and marketing, to the very notion that a rock or pop music album really matters. In terms of its musical merit, one can easily make the case that Pepper has been overhyped - and its shortcomings are all the more glaring in light of the album's cannonical status in modern culture. This record has suffered from its own success - and after forty years - its conceivable that it now represents something of a let-down. After all, no recording could possibly meet the expectations that this album carries.
This album should be approached for what it is, a very solid album by a talented musical group (that only happens to be my favorite band - and maybe the favored band of quite a few others). The strongest points of the album are its opening tracks and closing tracks - which form a medley of sorts and further the illusion of conceptual unity. Many (Lennon included) have derided the idea that this album is truly a concept album - and it certainly is not one in the sense that the Who's "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" are. The concept is more fundamental - that this disc contains a set of pop/rock songs that have been thoughtfully arranged together for all time - and not packaged at random to meet immediate market demand. In a way, with Napster and I-Tunes, the great age of the album that began with Sgt. Pepper, "Pet Sounds," and other 1966/1967 releases has come to an end in this decade, and this has made it it even more difficult to grasp what the fuss was truly all about. But if one wished to make a short Beatles playlist on their I-pod that captured the overall personality of the group, as well as having a representative effort for each of its four members, and a good mix of rock, pop, and experimental numbers - Sgt. Pepper would be an ideal playlist.

Best Album Ever!!.......2007-07-30

This has got to be, without a doubt the best album ever!!
The genius of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr shine in this album. Two of them are greatly missed. There are just no words to describe this album except for Pure Genius.

I've been reading some of the negative reviews on this album, and yes there are quite a few! Some say this album is satanic, others say it's overrated. Whatever! This album is not satanic, nor is it overrated. I think this album opened up a new kind of music into the world, and people loved it.

George's Indian music is amazing, and lets not forget John's masterpiece, "A Day in the Life."

I'm lucky enough to own the record, which I bought at a flea market for a $1.00. Yes, some moron sold his Sgt. Pepper album for a buck!! I took it home and the album works perfectly! I doubt it's a first edition, but who cares?

If you don't have this album, go buy it! Give it to your kids so they can appreciate what GOOD music sounds like.

apparently they were recording this album for 6 months...so you would have expected something truly amazing.but in my opinion it is no where near the best beatles album.abbey road is so much better.the 30 seconds in the middle of "a day in the life"(p macartney sings) is worth the money on its own.

Chris Daughtry starts his first post-American Idol disc with a song whose title reviewers coast to coast will be grateful for: "It's Not Over." What an understatement. For the Idol-watching rock fan's money, nobody--not even Southern-fried heartthrob Bo Bice in season four--stormed the stage with more raw talent. That it translates so well to a solo disc (Daughtry was recorded with studio musicians; future discs will include a Daughtry-assembled band) proves all he needed was a little prodding, the kind the tube has gotten so good at. Here are a dozen songs that'll flick your rock & roll switch, whether you're a Creed fan, a club kid, or a mambo king: "Used To" and "Over You," a couple of early tracks, ought to arrive bundled with a road map they're so highway sing-along-ready, and "Feels Like Tonight" screws the lid on the premise that Daughtry can deliver a punchy pop-rock song without flinching. Elsewhere, the North Carolina family man lets his inner (and outer, actually) goatee- and eyeliner-type guy rip: his built-for-the-hard-stuff voice bites down appealingly on "Breakdown," a dark serenade to mental health, and also on "What I Want," an '80s-style fist-pumper featuring Slash. The loud mad dash of those songs leads to a midtempo wind-down ("All These Lives," "What About Now"), but as a mix, it works. Daughtry is a man of many moods--contemplative, explosive, insistent, humble. No matter which pokes through on a given song, he steadies it to a place as honest as it is accessible. Rare is the rocker who lays out so broad an on-ramp. --Tammy La Gorce

There are several songs on this album that stand out and are memorable, many of them (the ones not written by Daughtry and his band) are acceptable to good background music. I await his second album and hope that he takes more risk and makes a little more noise.

I don't know how the Explict tag wound up on this CD! I have had this CD since the day it was released and had it on continuous play for the first seven months. I have mentioned in boards before this how much I appreciated the fact that this CD was clean, I am really careful what I listen to and love the fact there are no songs I need to skip because of content. Chris has mentioned before that he wanted to make sure this was a CD his kids could listen to. Does RCA know you put this tag on here??

This is an excellent album, whose music crosses various genres, even though it is classified as rock. Please do not be fooled by the rating system! There are absolutely NO explicit lyrics on this album. Chris Daughtry has addressed this issue and ststed that he has children, and he would like them to be able to listen to what their father creates!

Daughtry brings a clean modern sound to this CD. The tracks are well presented and there is only one song on the CD that isn't good.

I do not watch American Idol, and was not familiar with Chris Daughtry on the show. I became aware of the band through hearing the tracks played on Sirius Satellite Radio.

I rate this one a strong buy, and I find I'm still listening to it regularly after having it for well over a month.

When they exploded out of the gates on their 2004 debut, Contraband, Velvet Revolver were met with as much diffidence as appreciation. After all, supergroups have tended to detonate as often as succeed, and with vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Duff McKagan, and guitarist Slash all vying to keep the lit match away from the fuse, the odds against this band ever seeing album #2 were even money at best. Surprise! Not only have Velvet Revolver survived three years with unreckless abandon, this album blows the doors off its predecessor. Save a pair of disinfected ballads ("The Last Fight," "Gravedancer"), Libertad is all about hand-grenade chords, drag-racing riffs, and circus-tent choruses. The ageless McKagan and Slash continually gun for the disorderliness of their former band (most notably on the punkish opener "Let It Roll" and its lewd brother "Spay"), while Weiland sounds--knock on wood--positively clean and like a voice of boisterous renewal on tracks like "Mary Mary," "She Builds Quick Machines," and the melt-in-your-mouth cover of ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head." Obviously egos have been checked at the studio door, as Velvet Revolver have already exceeded their anticipated existence. And now that existence goes back on the clock, trying to outshine a second album that's head-and-shoulders better than the first. --Scott Holter

Libertad -- An Awesome Achievement In Modern Rock.......2007-08-01

Before Velvet Revolver's sophomore album, Libertad, was released, there was much to say of the band--the "super group" of five members consisted of three from Guns N' Roses, one from the Stone Temple Pilots, and one that had never been in an official band before. Their debut effort, 2004's Contraband, was packed with hard-rocking GN'R style hits like "Sucker Train Blues," "Do It for the Kids," "Fall to Pieces," and of course the unforgettable "Slither". Libertad, which is the band's powerful second album, is no disappointment and has everything a Velvet Revolver fan could want. The band start off this legendary recording with a Use Your Illusion era GN'R-esque song called "Let It Roll," which contains very catchy guitar riffs by Slash and an excellent vocal performance by Scott Weiland. This is followed by the hypnotic "She Mine," which also has perfect chords by Slash. "Get Out the Door," the third track, is also an excellent addition to the album and is the one of the many ideal songs in Velvet Revolver's catalog. The fourth track, which undoubtedly by now the band's most popular song to date, could be called the "Welcome to the Jungle" of Velvet Revolver. This megahit, called "She Builds Quick Machines," is some of Slash's best work to date--not just Slash, but the entire band. Filled to the brim with awesome lyrics and stellar drumming, this song was surely a definitive make for the album. After the listener gets a taste of how hard Velvet Revolver can rock, the band settle down a bit with "The Last Fight," a beatiful ballad with more awesome work by Weiland and Slash. This four-minute piece is also already a fan favorite, and if you've heard it I think you'll agree. The next track is what I like to call the "Voodoo Child" of the 21st century. This song, appropriately called "Pills, Demons and Etc." features crazy wah-wah pedal guitar licks by Slash and fast-paced bass and vocals by Duff McKagan and Scott Weiland. Along with the latter five, the listener can also tell that much effort was put forth in this song. Another hit would have to be the ninth track, "Just Sixteen". Quite similar to the style of "She Builds Quick Machines," it also shows how the band can be very heavy at times. "Gravedancer," which is the second-to-last song on the original album, is songwriting at its best. An awesome wah influenced guitar solo by Slash and soft, efficient vocals by Weiland make this song surpass even "November Rain," a song which was Guns N' Roses' biggest ballad in their day. The country side of Velvet Revolver can be heard on the fourteenth and final track of the album, "Re-Evolution". What can be considered as the band's take on blues influenced country, it is probably the oddest standout from any album I've ever heard; it's sort of funny, in a way. There was also a deluxe edition of this album made, containing two bonus tracks: "Messages," a powerful ballad which is a strong reminder of "The Last Fight," and "Psycho Killer," which, in my opinion, serves as an excellent alternate close-up for an already awesome album. The overall impression of Velvet Revolver's sophomore album is strong and spellbinding, and has something that every rock fan can enjoy. This is something you won't want to miss out on.

Disappointment of the year........2007-07-31

This album just doesn't deliver. I've listened through the entire thing 3 times now, and it is a labor to not hit skip about halfway through any of the tracks. On Contraband, I disliked most of the singles but found several killer tracks that made the album very worthwhile. Tracks like "do it for the kids", "sucker train blues", "big machine", "headspace" and "you got no right" brought together the best elements of the contributing members' former bands and had terrific, driving melodies.
Libertad by contrast has nothing. It's as homogenized as radio rock can possibly be. I've yet to find a single memorable guitar riff - a first for any record slash has signed his name to. The melodies are muddy and flat, and the high treble studio polish kills any emotion that might be buried in there somewhere. By far the biggest disappointment of records released this year.I wish everyone would hurry up and get over their respective grudges and rejoin their previous bands. STP was getting washed up towards the end as well, but still nothing this bland had come from Weiland yet.

What can I say? THIS IS THE EXACT SAME ALBUM AS CONTRABAND! Instead of buying this album, you may as well just buy the FIRST one again! Could this music be anymore STOCK?

Just play any random Velvet Revolver song on a loop, and you'll have heard the first two albums.

Still Waiting for some killer Revolver?! .......2007-07-30

Ever since the stars aligned and this lineup came together. The expectations have been high for something really spectacular to come out. After listening to Libertad a few times I'm still waiting. Libertad follows a more focused direction in it's musically styling's than the debut. Many tunes have more of a punk vibe to them. Which doesn't do much for me. It's disappointing to me that nothing on Libertad really blows you away? Yes, nothing, not one tune! I think as each tune came on I was waiting for Slash to tear it up and it hasn't happened. Some aggressive in your face guitars, something with an edge to it. Something that will rock your socks off as you crank it up to 11! Something that will make you say, "GNR & STP who are they"? Libertad definitely doesn't do that. If "Contraband" left you hopping for something better. This will just leave you disappointed. With Audioslave dismantling and leaving a big "Supergroup" whole to fill. Velvet Revolver just can't put the pieces together to fill it. I'm sure this won't be a popular review here. That's why we all have our own opinions......

Great Album from a Great Band.......2007-07-30

This album is extremely well produced and has a great sound. Their first Album has nothing on this album, Libertad is very capable of satisfying those who have heard most of their previous album, Contraband. The single released before the whole album is not the best on the album. I find myself enjoying the whole album instead of released singles getting all the play time.

The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty," which follows. --Rickey Wright

One of the greatest Beatles albums. This issue comes in a single crystal case with just an insert with the cover picture and song titles - no booklet of info on the album. Such an important album deserves an information booklet. One star subtracted for that.

i wanted to give this 5 stars but octopus`s garden and maxwells silver hammer are the only negative tracks."something" is incredible (john lennon at his best).but i have to take my hat off to paul macartney for what is on side b."golden slumbers" and "carry that weight" are class..."mean mr mustard and polythene pam" are brilliant,but "you never give me your money" is in my opinion the best beatle track.it was the first time i had heard a song go in so many different directions but just come together so well.

The Beatles Just Got Better.......2007-07-27

So many groups seem to fade away in their creativity and sound. But the Beatles pushed it to the limit each and every time. Even as they were drifting apart as a group, their music continued to push boundaries of creativity and sound, leaving other groups behind in awe. Even to the point of a 23 second song called "Her Majesty" They literally did not waste a second.

Abbey Road, the title itself sums up the CD. The road that became a studio, that became a household name, to the point where 40 years later there are television specials of present day artists recording in the Abbey Road studios.

It doesn't get much better than Abbey Road!

Second Side is the Best.......2007-07-24

The second side of Abbey Road is my all time favorite record. I have listened to this album hundreds of times over since 1969, I think. The first side is pretty good-- I'd give it 3 stars. But the second side is fabulous. .-- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC AND OTHER STRANGE STORIES.

Top 3 beatles albums........2007-07-23

This is a very great, very influential album by the beatles, and in my opinion it is one of their best, along with sgt. pepper and the white album of course.

Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. This Cd ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! It's my favorite beatles album. It has a different veriety of songs. For Some songs you just have to appriciate the music instead of the lyrics like "why don't we do it in the road?"
The Only one i don't like is "Yer Blues". It's Like their solo albums. The Best CD i ever herd!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29

This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.

In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.

The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.

How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.

Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!

It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23

This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...

Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

A lady friend is considering the purchase of a motorcycle. Aside from the skill and judgement, motorcycle ownership is about passion.

So I played Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away" for her. Now if you don't get a little choked up when Bob sings "someday, we'll get it right", you better stick with the Toyota Hybrid.

A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. It's not certain what contributed to this artistic rebirth, but Rush has crafted a historical and emotional odyssey that shows many both where they've been and where they're going--from the baroque soundscapes of "The Main Monkey Business," reminiscent of their earliest work to the seductive almost folkloric urgency of "The Way the Wind Blows," which is as dangerous, anxious, and prophetic as anything that Arcade Fire or Mars Volta is doing currently. RIP RUSH.......2007-08-01

Very dissapointing. Production is good, songs are boring and lifeless. Rush's downward spiral continues...the last good rush album was counterparts. These guys just can't write good songs anymore and Geddy's vocals are really starting to falter. How can these be the same guys that wrote 'Natural Science', 'Tom Sawyer', or 'The Trees'?

Amazing album .......2007-08-01

This is another great Rush release. It sounds better every time I listen to it. Great performances, lyrics and production. It contains an amazing song called "The Larger Bowl" that should be a huge radio hit. It has a darker feel on some songs mixing acoustic and heavy electric sounds. You don't have to be a musician to appreciate their musicianship and songwriting. Just buy it and check out their live show too.

A satisfying peek inside the recording life of Rush.......2007-07-30

Since I'd already bought the album, I made this purchase solely for the DVD - and it was worth every cent. I'm a new Rush fan - Snakes & Arrows was my first album & first concert - and I'm hooked. This DVD was a deeply satisfying and inspiring peek into the recording style, habits, relationships, and philosophies that make Rush who and what they are. A must!

A new format.......2007-07-30

I already have the album which is brilliant so I was buying this version to check out the new format.

It's great the sound is definately a step up from CD and I enjoyed the acompanying video. It gave a real insight into the creative process Rush used during the making of the album.

I have not yet had time to test the interactive features but on the whole I think the new format is a sucess.

Rush gets a free pass.......2007-07-30

This, unfortunatly, is the first Rush review that I have written. Unfortunatly this album really has no memerable songs on it at all. Although the muscianship is there, the songs are extremely flat and lifeless. Though the acoustic and instrumentals do stand out and the writing (thanks to that genius Neil Peart) do shed some light, this album does not stand up to previous albums. Some of the album sounds like rehashes of their earlier stuff. They suprisingly are not breaking new ground here. I do understand that Rush have been together for thirty plus years. They are allowed to make a sub par album for once in that time span. So, they get a free pass from me.

Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. Like most of their albums it took a few listens for me to fully enjoy it. Now this isnt their best effort but its still good. It just didnt hit as hard as their other albums did. It reminds me of Lullabies just because of the fact that it took awhile for me to get into it. If you have never listened to them then I suggest Songs for the Deaf, Rated R, or their Self-titled before this one. If you have those then Id say buy this.

Different style but still awesome.......2007-07-28

This CD is awesome, as are all QOTSA cds, but definitely different. I can't believe it is getting bad reviews because it is a different style, just give it a chance, it takes a few listens to get used to it, but it gets better with each listen. People apparently just wanted this cd to sound exactly like earlier QOTSA releases, but that's one thing I love about QOTSA, is the fact that all the CDs sound different.

So just give it a chance, listen to it more than one time before you decide you hate it. I love this CD, and if you're a QOTSA fan, you probably will too.

Queens of the Stone Age is nothing if not consistent when it comes to their musical style (their lineup is a different story all together). From the minute that "Era Vulgaris" kicks in, you know what you're in for, and you get it in spades. Incredibly catchy, somewhat gritty quality, and a just plain groovy mood that gets orchestrated throughout the album's eleven tracks. Witness opener "Turnin' on the Screw" which bleeds into rip-roarers like "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Misfit Love", "Make It Wit Chu", "3's & 7's", the instantly memorable and catchy "Suture Up Your Future", and the excellent closer "Run, Pig, Run". There's not really anything here on "Era Vulgaris" that you haven't heard before from Josh Homme and co., but if you're a longtime fan of the band, this isn't a bad thing one bit. As far as providing more than solid and inventive rock, "Era Vulgaris" delivers in all departments, and is yet again another wonderful entry in what is a very impressive and underrated discography. All in all, whether you're a Queens of the Stone Age fan new or old, "Era Vulgaris" won't disappoint.

A New Era For Queens.......2007-07-21

I've listened to the cd 5 full times and these boys are all over the map.
The biggest thing lacking is the drive on all but one song (sick,sick,sick). The rest is a jumble of misc. garbage. Not worth the price or time and makes lullabies sound like a 5 star album. Maybe the loss of Nick Oliveri is catching up with the band in the song writing department on the second release since his firing.

I always enjoyed the Journey song "I Believe". I purchased this album mostly for this song. The rest of the album is great also.

Living in the 80's again.......2007-07-13

This is a fabulous album of Journey's greatest hits and cannot figure out why I didn't have this album already, in my collection, because I like Steve's singing so much. When I heard it at the end of the Soprano's it brought back nice memories.

It's the Journey, not the destination.......2007-07-12

Once Steve Perry joined Journey for the "Infinity" album, the band's course was inevitably reset. They changed direction from being a progressive rock band to an arena rock juggernaut. Perry's main contribution was a strong melodic sense coupled to his more soulful vocals. The hits started almost immediately, as "Lights" and "Wheel In The Sky" became FM Rock Radio staples.

That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")

The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?

This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

This is how you do a greatest hits collection. You put ALL of them on there. Not a mix of half greats, and half "other", then release the rest on another "greatest hits" CD.

Get the Infinity album too........2007-07-07

Unfortunately, it does not include my favorite song tandem Feeling That Way/ Anytime. For that you need to buy The Infinity album. It does include some great songs, a good mix of rockers and ballads. Definitely worth the price to anyone who loves classic rock and roll or was a teen in the late '70s. But do yourself a favor and get the Infinity album too.

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams

These guys, Pink Floyd, are simply copying everything that I created on my 4-track back in 1968. I have thought about suing them on several occasions since the album was first released back in March of 1973, but I have never had the money to afford an attorney. Plus, The Electric Prunes were the first band to compose and perform this so-called psychedelic music.

Very overrated and unoriginal.

This black pearl of Rogerian profundity represents the pessimist's inversion of, "today is the first day of the rest of your life." Between both extremes lies the truth, which is that each day brings us closer to judgement, heaven or hell, the choice of which is ours, based upon the way that we tick away "the moments that make up the dull day." It takes courage to face the fact that our actions are meaningful and have eternal consequences, no matter how mundane they may be. "Life sucks and then you die" is a great excuse for those who are too lazy to clean the toilet, like your mother asked you to. Instead, you can flop down on the couch, get stoned, veg out to some Floyd, and tell yourself that you're so much better than "them," be they soldiers ("Us and Them"), or greedy businessmen ("Money"), or your mother, who still wants you to clean the toilet. So get over your self-righteous, self-pity, and do something for someone else for a change. A bath every once in a while wouldn't hurt either...

Of all the memorable lines in this great album, why do I seize on this one? Because it best represents the philosophy that lies beneath this album, which is, at best, pessimism, and at worst, despair and fatalism. This is dangerous stuff, especially for young people, who are prone to narcissism.

Although importantly flawed, DSOTM is a great album. "Money" and "Us and Them" are conceptual and musical masterpieces. "Money" is especially notable for the best use of sound effects in rock history, and the poignant "Us and Them" soars musically. "The Great Gig in the Sky" is a daring innovation (singing, without words) that wholly succeeds as a mystical, pagan contemplation of death. "Time" is another musical gem that, despite the objections given above, warns us all about wasting our talents, in what is perhaps my favorite line of the album, "Then one day you turn to find/ ten years have got behind you/ no one told you when to run/ you missed the starting gun." "On the Run" is sonically ground-breaking and a pleasure to listen to.

Unfortunately, the sophomoric "Brain Damage" mars the album with its spoken-word and cackling pretension. This is excusable due to former bandmate Syd Barrett's descent into madness, but "Brain Damage" sounds like something out of a bad science fiction movie, not as a mature consideration of mental illness.

Overall, DSOTM represents a historic and musical milestone, and is a must for every rock music collection, the above objections notwithstanding.

Polished and pretentious. .......2007-07-18

I listened to Pink Floyd when I was at school (late 1980s BTW). It just seemed the thing to do for a teenager. There was a feeling of thinking yourself more grown up listening to such a supposedly intelligent band. And maybe also a slight thrill of teenage rebellion in listening to a band that took drugs (gasp!)

Revsiting it so many years later it's hard to see what the fuss is about. It's a very well produced album I'll grant you that. Sound is excellent throughout (although perhaps Alan Parsons, not Pink Floyd themselves is mainly to thank for that) But *musically* I can't really see this as the greatest thing ever recorded, let alone greatest pop record.

Speak To Me- not really music,but an atmospheric intro
Breathe- Nice enough soft tune, but not really memorable. Water's is at his worst "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" gentleness though.
On The Run - A synth going "bloobly bloobly blooby" to sound effects. Must have seemed clever in 1973 but it's just boring after about 3 listens.
Time- The first genuinely good song here. The guitar solo is about as good as the clean "understated" guitar style gets. Great intro too.
Great Gig In The Sky- Moving in parts, but a lot of the time it's just tuneless wailing.

Money- Floyd get funky. Meh. One of the first manifestations of Waters annoying "I hate the music business" fixation. Hey Roger my heart bleeds for you, with you having so much money. It's evil, I know.
Us And Them- Like Breathe, it's a quiet little song, quite pleasant, but to me it wouldn't sound out of place in Sesame Street.
Any Colour You Like - Hit and miss instrumental.
Brain Damage -Good song. I sometimes wonder though if Water's too obvious English pronounciations ("the lunatic is on the grawhss") are a turn on for Americans in the way that Monty Python's pronounciations of "bawwhhstid" have them in stitches.
Eclipse.- Nice ending to the album.

So overall, there are some good momemts here and there. But, in essence this album is essentially a soft rock album dressed up in Stanley Kubrick-esque pretentions. It's not "space rock", despite what people say. Early Tangerine Dream, for example, would have much more reason to call an album "Dark Side Of The Moon" than Pink Floyd.

I don't hate this album, I just don't think it's worth getting too excited over. I heard it in my formative years, but it's not music I think is worth revisiting.

Relevant Over 30 Years Later.......2007-07-09

Incredibly, Dark Side Of The Moon, by Pink Floyd, was released almost 35 years ago. The amazing thing is that this excellent CD is still important and relevant today. I can listen to Us and Them over and over again. The hypnotic perfection of this CD is amazing. Most bands would love to have a collection of greatest hits that would rival this one album by this incredible band. If you have not heard this, you are in for a treat. A Five star masterpiece.
