Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very respectable effort.......2004-11-25

Although the accompanying music is not that great, the spoken word aspect of this album is very strong. The lyrics are poetically charged. The vocal delivery shows a surprising range of emotion: this goes beyond Rozz's typical whiny vocal performance. Furthermore, I respect this album because Rozz didn't call it Christian Death. This is better than anything else he did in the 90s: Much better than the crap found in Skeleton Kiss, Iron Mask, Path of Sorrows, Rage of Angels, Doll's Theatre, or any such Cleopatra -- fake Christian Death --excrement. The one worthwhile 90s Cleo (Rozz) Christian Death release is Invocations, which is worth buying just for the excellent -- real Christian Death, circa Ashes -- studio bonus tracks, Spectre (Love Is Dead), and Haloes.

5 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Into The Private Hell of Rozz Williams.......1998-10-19

A recording so personal and revealing that the late Rozz Williams had originally asked Cleopatra records not to release it! Unfortunately out of print now, Every King A Bastard Son (the true title) is a musical breakthrough. Although I firmly beleve that the spoken-word genre of music is tedious at best, this goes far beyond anything that has been done before. Utilizing keyboards, guitars, and various sound and vocal effects Williams lures us into his own private hell and leaves us begging for more. The various orchestrations provide a disturbing backdrop for Rozz's even more disturbing poetry (from The Beast [Invocation]: "close the womb, lock the door; birth by egg and birth by fire; attachment and repulsion, obtain a new life on these higher planes!"). He sometimes leaves you wondering exactly what his meaning is, (in the cover art especially) but the emotion is so strong that it doesn't really matter. A frightening piece of art that must be experienced!
