From the first blanket of choral voices awash in reverb, Amarantine is instantly recognizable as a product of Enya, the Irish chanteuse who has created a genre unto herself. Although it's been five years since her last CD, on Amarantine it's as if time stood still. The triumvirate of Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan, and producer Nicky Ryan work the formula they perfected on Watermark, layering her voice in lush choirs pushed along by pizzicato synth strings, swooning orchestral pads, and harpsichord arpeggios. On tracks like "Less Than a Pearl" and "Drifting," Enya flirts with a timeless sound born in gothic chants and hymns. The former is one of three songs that she sings in Roma Ryan's fictitious language of Loxian. It seems to free her, especially on "The River Sings," a veritable rave-up where she gets the tribal choir going in the style of Scottish mouth music. But to get there you have to slog through slo-mo ballads that manage to be dirge-like and singsong at the same time, like the Carpenters on Quaaludes. The relatively restrained arrangement of "It's in the Rain" almost attains a folk-like simplicity that Enya hasn't experienced since she sang with her siblings in Clannad a quarter-century ago. Amarantine sounds like it was born in cloistered solitude, self-referentially echoing Enya albums past. --John Diliberto

Another Zone.......2007-07-07
Not as good as previous albums.......2007-06-27
Another beautiful release.......2007-06-07
Less Than a Pearl: Probably one of the best album openers she's done, possibly since the Memory of Trees. Verses are nice and subdued but then probably the most gorgeous chorus she's done hits and it becomes a stellar Enya track. Highly recommended. 10/10
Amarantine: Not a lot of people are big fans of this one and I can see why. It's not that it's a bad track it just doesn't really have that hook that instantly pulls you in. Of course her vocals are spot-on and the chorus is slightly catchy, it's just not one of the better ones here. 7/10
It's in the Rain: Originally I didn't like this one but the chorus struck me and I started humming it, especially the backing vocals that answer the last word in the line, so I got into it more. It's one of the more lovelier songs on here. 8/10
If I Could Be Where You Are: What sells the song completely is Enya's vocals. The music is wonderfully understated, not overpowering her with choir sounds like she usually does. While it's maybe a bit more slower and not as attention grabbing, it's anchored by a great vocal. 8/10
The River Sings: Very upbeat, very lively despite the fact you don't know what she's singing (several of the songs were done in lyricist Roma Ryan's made-up language of Loxian. A great chorus that slows down the beat a tad; this should've been a single. 9.5/10
Long Long Journey: Another album highlight, largely built around Enya's vocal melodies and the chorus with a kind of marching band drums coming in to liven things up. Best part of the song for me personally is a captivating bridge melody. 9.5/10
Sumiregusa: Originally I didn't like the song but there's this one section where her vocals almost turn cathedral sounding and I ended up liking it again. May not be a song you get into right away but give it time and eventually it'll grow on you. 8.5/10
Someone Said Goodbye: Even though there's a hook with the song, I'm not that big a fan of it. For some reason I couldn't get the chorus "adios, goodbye" from a Day Without Rain song out of my head when I hear this one. It's a nicely composed track but it may not be a favorite for all. 8/10
A Moment Lost: The further along the record goes, the more slower the songs seem to get and there isn't that more upbeat song to liven things up. As always, it's a very nice sounding song and none of these are skip-worthy but if you tend to look for specific songs to listen to, some might pass this one. 7.5/10
Drifting: I love the use of the piano on this one. Very minimalist in its arpeggios and chording but fits perfectly with this instrumental. It's very soothing to have on and like a lot of instrumentals, it's not meant to be a big pop number a la River Sings but it's still serene nonetheless. 8.5/10
Amid the Falling Snow: Nice bouncy melody to accompany Enya's multi-tracked vocals. These help the track later with tons of ethereal vocals going on at once. Even though it's buried at the end of the album, it helps bring the cd's pace up. 8.5/10
Water Shows the Hidden Heart: The third, after River and Pearl, to be sung in Roma's Loxian language, it's a more quieter album closer and it's nice to hear her vocals almost cross each other near the end. It's a bit slower and probably won't go in your iPod anytime soon but it's a lovely closer. 8/10
It's always hard to review an Enya cd. When you use too many adjectives for "lovely", it might sound kind of biased. It's then you start seeing the songs as a whole rather than just finding everything pretty. While a couple of okay songs drag it down a tad, it's still a worthwhile cd for fans.
She's done it again..........2007-05-20
One of Enya's Best.......2007-05-18
The song writing in Amarantine feels much tighter than in A Day Without Rain. I have two favorite tracks on this album: "It's In The Rain" and "The River Sings." The former is reminiscent to me of some of her work from the Watermark album, while the latter provides an excellent rhythm that evokes mental scenes of Celtic dancers.
I highly enjoy this album and I listen to it fairly often. If you enjoy all of Enya's music (as I do), you will enjoy this album.

Rip Off.......2006-11-10
it is are songs from old albums and only about 5 of them. The entire CD
was about 10 minutes. I returned it because I thought it was not worth
it and ended up paying shipping and handling both ways. My refund ended
up being about one dollar. What a disappointment and loss of money.
Amaratine.......2006-04-10
I look forward to more of her music. She is more than excellent in my view.
Delights & Surprises .......2005-12-13
A style that is redolent of `Only Time', it is Enya , working on a hooky pop song with universal lyrics. The melody may draw many at first listen like myself, and for others it may take a little longer. Al though it reminds me of `Only Time' the high chorus owes more to a church choral hymn than a pop song. As a song, I like it much more than `Only Time' which took me awhile to really like.
THE COMB OF THE WINDS
An Enya instrumental with voices. A gentle melody that is a crisper version of `Midnight Blue' , with the sensibility of `A Day Without Rain' infused with `Drifting'. The mid section features vocalised harmonies that drive it along without overpowering the instrumental section. Then back again to the main melody. As a B side, it most likely had to make way for `Drifting' in the `Amarantine' album.
THE SPAGHETTI WESTERN THEME FROM THE CELTS
The first time I hear an Enya composition, really adhering to a style of an existing genre of musical style, that conforms to the style from themes of action Western film. It opens with castanets and dramatic guitar chords, then whistling, percussion as the main melody plays. Enya's most obvious contribution is in the vocalisations, backed by Ryan and Bridgeman. The percussion by Bridgeman gives it dynamics, power and a sense of urgency. The dramatic guitar opener and timely chords within the song, give it the necessary twang. The vocals propel that sense of urgency and motion further. The sound of pealing bells should be familiar to fans who have Enya's `The Celts' recording.
It lends a strong image. The start is like the hero checking the barrels of his revolver, he takes his shotgun and then unties his mount. He puts on his coat and off he goes, galloping away. The mid section where the mission bell tolls tell us of the villain and his henchmen waiting. The track tells us of the hero's swift gallop to the place of showdown. The track ends with the sound of distant pealing bells, of the town square, where the final climactic scene of shoot-outs will be played. Can Enya do a Spaghetti Western? Definitely and convincingly.

Since the traditional jewel-box release of Amarantine preceded this collector's edition by a year, the primary topic of interest here is the packaging. No surprise--it's first-rate. The key component is the flip-top slipcase, adorned in fine red velvet with embossed gold-foil lettering and a small, cameo-like photo of Lady En in beatific recline. Inside is an illustrated, 148-page hardbound book (in a horizontal format, with satiny ribbon lift) that bears the title of Amarantine's concluding track, "Water Shows the Hidden Heart." It is the work of Roma Ryan, Enya's longtime lyricist, who weaves a fairly confounding Tolkienesque tale. Devoid of dialogue, the story traces the quest of an unnamed wanderer ("one-who-is-looking-for-whom-he-loves") who wistfully journeys from odd-sounding isles to symbolic cities (e.g., the City of Solitude) in search of links to his deceased lover. This is said to be the story behind three tracks on Amarantine sung by Enya in Ryan's invented language of Loxian, a byproduct of Enya's involvement with the 2001 film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, to which she contributed two songs. Heavy on grand statements and mythic imagery, it may be a story only a hobbit or Loxian ("people who open their hearts to the night") could love. Also included are three lavishly staged "photo cards" with the Queen of Serene swathed in Elizabethan opulence. The disc, containing no musical variations from the original release (i.e., no bonus tracks), is tucked into a sleeve inside the book's back cover. The music offers many gorgeous moments (notably the opening track), though the project's overall slowish pace gives the recording a faint, lingering patina of melancholy. "The River Sings," one of Ryan's Loxian tracks, is a welcome exception, with its commanding Gaelic groove and churning, progressive pulse. Overall, as a gift item, the box's red velvet exterior delivers high visual and tactile impact and, combined with some predictably lovely music, will likely wow most Enya fans. --Terry WoodAlbum Description

Nice single package from Enya..........2005-12-07
Most Enya fans are familiar with the song "Amarantine"...but what of the extra tracks? "The comb of the winds" is your bog standard, typical Enya instrumental but it is all the better for it, similar to "The Promise" and "Oriel window" (from previous singles releases) - I like it very much. "The Spaghetti Western Theme From The Celts" i'm not too sure about. It must be from an advert or something - it's way too short for a start and doesn't seem to get going or have a purpose.
Still, this is a welcome single release from someone who I have admired and followed for many a year. Most Enya fans will get this anyway for the extra tracks but I still recommend it for the un-converted...
...after all, there's got to be more to music nowadays than Hip hop and screeching girl groups, hasn't there...?
Regards.
