5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-04

This album came out way back when, but I recently dug it out my cd box and remebered how sweet it was. Nearly every song on here is catchy as hell. "What's that you say" is probably one of the better songs I've ever heard and the whole CD stands out. It's too bad bands like this don't get mainstream attention as they are better than 90% of the bands polluting the airwaves today.

It's a fun cd that has some nice riffs and catchy hooks and you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars New and Old... It's all good.......2004-02-09

I love almost everything I've heard from sprung monkey, this album is no different. It's not as serious as some of their other music, but it has a really nice upbeat feel to almost all the songs, and their cover of coconut is awesome and funny at the same time. I really wish I could find more bands as good as these guys that are willing to re-invent themselves and experiment with other genres. "Get a Taste" is the kind of album you want for those clear summer days at the beach when the waves are 3 to 5' and clean, and everything seems to be perfect. It's a feel good album and definitely worth your purchase.

4 out of 5 stars It is worth it.......2002-07-31

this is a great album. It is very easy to listen to and you just get used to it and cant stop. The lyrics are amazing especially on beautiful and american made. This album is amazing. i also recommend Mr. Funny Face by sprung monkey.

3 out of 5 stars What's happened guys?!.......2001-09-19

I thought for a while about whether to give this CD a 2 or a 3. I gave it a 3 because it is a fairly decent CD, it's just totally different to what I was expecting and hoping for. If you like catchy, melodic alternative songs then go ahead any buy it. But if you, like me, loved 'Mr Funny Face' and think you'll be getting more of the same, then you might also be disappointed. The best thing about'Mr Funny Face' was its complete originality and its technical complexity- those drums! wow! But that's all gone on 'Get a Taste'- and every song has one of those catchy hooking choruses, and after about 9 songs this gets a bit wearing. There are a few good tracks worth mentioning- 'Friends' reminds me a bit of 'Mr Funny Face', 'Whatcha Gonna Do' is a track with good old Sprung Monkey dark undercurrents and 'American Made' has a lot of the old energy. Apart from that not many of the others stick out. What happened, Sprung? You've gone too mainstream!!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD Slammed!!!!!!!!.......2001-07-30

This cd is so ...! i can't even believe how many good songs are on this cd - if you don't buy this, you're moronic. seriously, i love it. Party Like a Rockstar is my new theme song...buy it, tell your friends, they will thank you over and over.

2 out of 5 stars Just another obscure band. Who cares?.......2006-02-03

The music scene today is a monotonous place: meat-and-potatoes rock, lousy hip-hop and that's a bout it. Luckily, some bands and artists have been intentionally weird to showcase a unique sound: Beck, Radiohead and Primus to name a few. Note that Sprung Monkey is not in the list. I'm surprised you even bothered to track down this disc. It's so obscure: NOBODY cares about this band. If you trade in this CD for buyback credit at F.Y.E., it's worth 1 penny! So why did Sprung Monkey fade into obscurity so fast? I'll list the reasons:

1. Their name is terrible. Think of all the now-legendary bands with solid names: Metallica, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin. Would you really want to collect Sprung Monkey memorabilia? Maybe purchase a Sprung Monkey boxed set in 20 years, while wearing a "retro" Sprung Monkey t-shirt?

2. Their cover art is terrible. I mean, just look at it! People will buy a CD with a boring cover (Hoobastank) or a hideous cover (Cannibal Corpse) or even a stupid/funny cover (Weird Al Yankovic) but never a stupid/pointless cover (Sprung Monkey.)

3. Terrible song titles. "He Aloha Mele?" "Mr. Funny Face?" "Greta?" Were they just testing us to see how far they'd go until we (the consumers) would be repelled?

4. Their sound. "Get `Em Outta Here" sounds like a weak Sublime clone. The rest of the songs are actually OK, but they REALLY have to grow on you. Problem is, you'll just feel embarrassed to sing along to them, even home alone, because of the band's terrible cover art, song titles, and name.

This disc was released on Hollywood Records, which is responsible for numerous good movie soundtracks, plus a bunch of crappy nowhere bands (Who here likes the Pimps? How `bout Simon Says?) Plus, punk-rock band Suicide Machines released material on Hollywood Records: it sucks, but their other albums are superb.

Why am I being so harsh on Sprung Monkey? Because I want to. This album is only 8 years old and already in a comatose state of no fans whatsoever. I'm also warning all bands who want a unique sound: have fun with your music, but don't forget to create an APPEAL as well. Don't be the next Sprung Monkey!

3 out of 5 stars Unexpected...dont know if its good or bad yet..........2002-08-13

I originally heard "Party like a Rockstar(So Cal Loco)" when I was watching "Dude Where's My Car?". I didn't know who it was by or anything, but I knew I liked it. Then I was at a used record store and they were giving out free Sprung Monkey stickers. So I downloaded "What's That You Say?" and I was hooked. I bought their recent album, "Get a Taste" and it's one of my most frequently listened to album. I knew they had two other albums, so based on GAT, I bought "Mr. Funny Face". It wasn't what I expected at all. It's so much harder than GAT. I can't decide if I like it or not. I like hard rock more than anyone, but I just can't get past that it's Sprung Monkey playing those hard riffs. I reccomend "Get a Taste" to everyone...but as far as "Mr. Funny Face"...well...the jury's still out on this one...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Band!.......2002-02-19

This band is truely awesome. Every track from every CD is a keeper! If you ever get a chance to see them live, check them out!

4 out of 5 stars some weak moments, but wow..........2001-11-18

I first heard "Get 'Em Outta Here" on the warped tour sampler a few years back, and it ended up being one of the mp3's my freand sean kept on his playlist up in his room, so whenever we were chilling up there and having a few brews getting ready to go out and raise some hell, that song would always come on. I've alwyas had good associatains for that tune because of this, so when i stumbled upon it in a CD store a year or so ago for a pretty cheap price, i picked it up. Basically, the rest of the CD sounds nothing like GEOH, but still rocks.

Well, that's not entirely true- the beggining 2/3 rock, and then after "naked" things get a little weak, until you hit "He Aloha Mele" which is so weird it's cool. However, the beginning of this CD is so strong that it makes up for this. The first track is such a cool hip-hop/punk fusion, and the prechorus is just awesome. the next two tracks are REALLY heavy and still quite good. Then you hit Super Breakdown which is sorta poppy in a metal-ish sort of way- huge singalong chorus with chrushing guitars and all the works. Hard Times is probably the heaviest tune on the disc, and is just killer. the title track is awesome- sort of a tranced out hip-hop feel to it. Jo-Jo has one of the coolest chorus lyrics i've heard anywhere ("and i can feel your hands caressing me, so breathes a killer, so breathes a lover, now...), and tired is also a great tune, sort of a heavier version of the ambient feel of the title track. Then comes naked, which i think is probably the best song of the disc- the ultimate post-breakup song, and also sports some really good lines. It's true that a few of the songs here border on being trite, but when these guys are lyrically on, they're amazing, and it almost reads like modernist poetry- that chorus from JoJo could have come from the pen of charles bauldelaire. Like i said, the rest of this disc is basically filler, but the first half hour is so intense that even then it's one of my favorite CD's, and besides, there's no reason you can't just hit "stop" after naked.

Also, a lot of it is pretty subtle, but the production here is superb- it's one of these discs that (especially with headphones) you pick up on something new every time you relisten to it. Maybe a rhythm guitar part younever noticed before, or a subtle panning in the hi-hats or somethingp- there's lots of cool stuff going on under the surface here.

it's too bad they didn't end after Naked, with maybe He Aloha Mele tacked on at the end- Sprung Monkey would have had a short, concise, and powerful CD on their hands. It's an incredibly diverse yet cohesive sounding disc as it is, and has become a personal favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sprung Monkey CD!.......2000-04-11

I first listened to Sprung Monkey when I bought MR FUNNY FACE, and I really liked them. Then I was convinced this band was for real and bought their first major label release SWIRL. It is amazing! It is better than Mr.FF. In Swirl they have a more aggresive, raw, and straight out aggression. They really have some awesome rythms, with intelligent lyrics, fast aggresive heavy guitars and tons of percussion and bass. This is one of the most groundbreaking and awesome bands now. Buy SWIRL and you won't be dissapointed. The stand out tracks in my opinion are #2,3,4,10. But it is good from start to end. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars If u liked Mr. Funny Face..........2000-04-09

If u liked Mr. Funny Face, then you *MUST* hear this album. The title track, "Swirl", is a whirling beautiful anthem which changes from a slow trance into passionate screams. The album is brilliant musically and lyrically and every song has its moments. I have no doubt that Sprung Monkey is on the verge of stardome with their next effort.

4 out of 5 stars Fine survey of German Renaissance music.......1999-02-11

Cordes' Weser Renaissance recorded this in 1993 but it is just as excellent as anything they have recorded in the last couple of years. It is difficult to think of a better selection of early 16th Century German music.

The instrumental tracks are not as appealing to this listener as the vocal (frankly prior to Praetorius and Scheidt German wind music was a bit too dependant on the noisesome city waits), but by the third interlude Cordes' decision to intersperse the vocal pieces with instrumental settings is justified.

The CD opens with a burst of chalmeaux from Senfl which sounds disconcertingly like a bunch of 1970s kids blowing plastic yazoos, but then a minute later one is in the monastery with an introitus from Isaac and Psalm70 by Walter. Or almost in the monastery - the womens' voices on the soprano line are effective but not `authentic'. The same contrast is repeated between a robust brass melodia from Stoltzer and a setting of Psalm100 by Josquin Desprez. The anonymous lamentanza which follows is one of the best pieces on the CD. There then follows a setting by Willaert from Vergil's Aenid IV:651 where the poet says goodbye to his "sweet skins". Tracks [7] [9][10][11] present German villanellas by Isaac and Lechner, unfortunately without giving the name of the poets. [13] is a gloria by Philipp Dulichius, who passes unmentioned in the notes. [14] is a deadly serious lectio from Job10:8-12 by Lassus, and then following an instrumental setting of a Lassus motet the CD concludes with Psalm66:1-4 firmly set by Hassler.

2 out of 5 stars Missing Songs.......2007-07-31

The Soundtrack was a great disappointment. There was a scene in the movie with Tisha Campbell and Rusty Cundieff where she's posing for photos taken by him and a scene where they're sitting on the sofa watching TV and he places his head down on her lap. The song played in this scene was not on the soundtrack and I have no idea of who could have made the song. And some of the other songs that are on the soundtrack I don't remember even hearing them on the movie. What's up with that?

4 out of 5 stars Move On, Move On.......2000-03-19

I'll give this CD 4 stars just for "Move On (I'm Leaving)" by Jon Forte featuring Pras that was one of the best songs of 1997.

          Album Description

Leo Smit has an impressive pedigree as an American composer and musician. A virtuoso pianist, he has worked closely with such legends as Stravinsky, Balanchine, Copland and Stokowski. He has set more that 75 of Emily Dickinson's poems to music, grouping the works into cycles about related subject matter. The disc contains the world premiere recordings of three of those cycles- Childe Emilie- Memories and Fantasies of Childhood, The Celestrial Thrush- Songs of Music and Bird, and The White Diadem- Songs About Poets and Poetry. Smit's songs display great sensitivity to Dickinson's very personal world, and reflect the poet's emotional range by adopting an extremely colorful palette. The songs frequently veer from the simple and tonal to more rhythmically complex and chromatic settings, always alert to word and mood.

          Album Description

The towering tree at Rockefeller Center, midnight mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bing Crosby singing White Christmas—these are among the core snapshots of an American Christmas. A holiday that fuses the sacred and secular, high-gloss entertainment and deep spiritual meaning, Christmas in the United States is built on longstanding rituals at the same time as new riffs are continually being invented. It has its own distinct identity, and in one of the most culturally diverse societies on the globe, a Christian holiday has risen as the country's most prominent.

The striking array of works conducted by Judith Clurman on this recording open a window onto the many facets of a contemporary Christmas. Most of these compositions were first performed at one of the annual Christmas-tree-lighting ceremonies at Lincoln Center, where Clurman has directed music-making since 1992, and many were commissioned for those events.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful affirmation of American invention.......2001-09-30

Judith Clurman knows how to work with singers, and the sound of her chorus is sumptuous on this CD. Just what you might want to have playing as the family is gathering for the holidays. And in a time of questioning and re-examination of what makes us Americans, the fact that this CD represents a wide variety of American composers doing their best to connect to beloved traditions makes this CD a winner. Hats off to New World for making a CD the record companies never would have...
