There are committed Outfield fans out there who will disagree, but the tense, shrill, Police-like "Your Love" and the middle-American radio smash "Since You've Been Gone" are enough for most reasonable purposes. The one is available on Priority Records' Rock of the 80's, Volume 14; while the other appears on the Hazy Shade of '80s compilation. For the committed, there's this package and the previous best-of, Playing the Field. This one's bigger and better. All the Outfield hits are here, including 1989's "Voices of Babylon" and "Winning It All" from the Mighty Ducks III soundtrack. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:
Great songs from a great group..........2007-07-02
Just Good Music.......2007-06-14
For me, these are the type songs that you find yourself humming several days after you listen to them. Not hymns, not anthems, just good solid music.
So give them a chance, buy this CD and I think that you might even remember their name after you listen to their songs.
Great for any Outfield fan.......2007-02-07
Under-rated, under-appreciated and under-played.......2006-02-15
1985 was a pivotal year for the Outfield. This song came on the radio "You Got Me All Screwed Up". It was actually called "Say It Isn't So". These rich harmonies, this amplified drumming and this twangy guitar sound that make the Rembrants seem like finger painters. This stuff had all the pop hooks and musical chops that epitomized the '80's. They followed with "Josie's on a Vacation far away..." ("Your Love"), "All The Love" and "Every Time You Cry". Lead singer John Spinks had a Sting meets Brian Adams quality that drove a song a long...well, like a line drive!
This is a compilation filled with lost greatness...
"For You" is a tune from 1990 that is not played anymore. Dittos in "Winning It All" which is sometimes heard at the stadium. My favorite lost classic is "My Paradise" from the Voices of Babylon album. This album was more experimental, and the record company chose poorly, as they went with the more moody title track as their first single. "Paradise" could be the band's best song, and is thankfully chosen to be song 12 in this collection. "Since You've Been Gone" is the lead single from the "Bangin'" album. It cooks.
Some of the lesser known stuff makes for nice filler. "The Night Ain't Over", "Somewhere In America" and the demo version of "Alone With You" are all testaments to this band's nonchalant pop song styling. "Closer To Me" is a guitar driven, last gasp by a band that could have played the field so much longer if radio hadn't gone so sour.
As a former Top 40 jock who followed this band onto the playing field, I've yet to hear an act with this much pop power and one that did so much damage in such a short period of time. And they did it completely steroid free!
Good but lacking somewhat.......2005-11-18

Too Much Great Music Here To Ignore!!!.......2006-02-22
A compilation of 15 tunes from 1993 to 1999, this CD is quite literally their most front to back collection. All the songs have that trademark Outfield sound-great harmonies, jangly guitars and superb melodies. Simon Dawson is now the full time drummer. The band has gone a little more techno (a la voices of Babylon era) and sounds a little less punky. But their AC leanings pay off in huge ways on "It's A Crime" and "Heaven's Little Angel" where the power of their style is mixed with a subtle melody. There are some real "Your Love" type songs here as well though. "Lay Down" kicks in with a sonic vocal treatment that will surround your ears. "Certain Kind Of Love" has some chunky riffs that augment a cool keyboard sequence. And there are surprises too. The Corey Heart keyboard intro to "Kiss The Rain" is a different twist on a power rocker. "Girl Of Mine" features a harmony intro that's made for radio...
And while we're on that topic, there's so much radio fodder here that all you do is hit shuffle and wait. They're all that good. Which brings us back to Voices of Babylon. The worst lead off Outfield single ever-and the one that slowed or even killed their career. The single should have been "My Paradise" which to date is my favorite Outfield song from that same album(VOB). "Chic Lorraine" has a "Why Can't This Be Love (VH)" intro followed by an almost bluesy, more gutsy arrangement. "Out To Lunch" uses drum sequencing and has this Monkees meets euro-pop sound. It's kinda cool. And you get the "all screwed up" lyric for old time's sake. The last call is "They Can't Knock You Down Again", a tribute to MLK and the '60's era. The music has a pure Hendrix meets album cut Beatles sound. And this is about as experimental and un-Outfield as I've heard this band get. But it still works, cause these guys have the musical chops to do it.
This album has 15 non-toss tracks that go from pop, rock, euro-pop-rock, retro-rock, and plain old Outfield classic rock. Radio missed this as they've been MIA over the last 15 or so years. May stuff like "Extra Innings" make it back to prime time.
Some excellent tunes.......2005-11-16
