For their second full-length, the Montreal-based seven-or-eight-piece Arcade Fire show themselves capable of Big Rock, as original, and as potentially marquee-topping as TV on the Radio and Sigur Ros. Regardless, the intentional murkiness of these pleasantly anthemic New Wave dirges makes it sound as if the music has already reverberated through a crowded cement stadium. Named after cult author John Kennedy Toole's first novel, Neon Bible is smart and subtle enough to present itself as a personal discovery for every listener, every word to be pored over by fans (as with those of Tori Amos, Pavement, and Radiohead). Surely, lines like "The sound is not asleep/ It's moving under my feet" have already been scribbled onto the margins of countless textbooks. Such words are delivered with less intensity this time, but no less import. For vocal influences, lead singer Win Butler seems to have traded his '80s Bowie in for an '80s Springsteen, at least on the songs "Antichrist Television Blues" and "Windowsill" (though "Intervention" sounds an awful lot like '80s era Go-Betweens). The kitchen sink arrangements include the use of an Eastern European orchestra, pipe organ, hurdy gurdy, and a military choir. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
The second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. With string and orchestral arrangements by two of the band members, "Neon Bible" is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good. The deluxe CD version is packaged in a hinged box with two 32-page flip books designed by the band. The LP is double 180-gram audiophile quality with three sides of music and an etching on the fourth side. The LP also includes a coupon for a free MP3 download of "Neon Bible". Arcade Fire's 2004 debut "Funeral" has scanned over 300,000 copies and is certified platinum in Canada.Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-07-03
Another Brilliant Album.......2007-06-08
It is unusual for a new band to follow up on such an excellent debut without the old sophomore dip.
Neon Bible lacks some of the intense moments of Funeral but makes this up in consistency.
Everyone us right about the silly packaging: flimsy, indulgent and wasteful - nothing like being irritated before you manage to get to the disk.
Arcade Fire-- the best of the best.......2007-05-29
Not like Funeral, but still Great!.......2007-05-26
The biggest difference bwtn both albums was the drums. The drums are hard, loud, intricate on the Funeral. On Neon Bible, they seem to be more in the background (maybe bc of the mixing) and seem to be more complementary rather than driving the songs' direction. Now it's the strings, brass, keys, guitars, singing that seem to guide the songs and take over the drums.
That said, this album is great. It took a few listens to appreciate it but this one is up there with Funeral.
An even more complex Arcade Fire.......2007-05-23

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

While Volume 2 of Saturday Night Live: The Musical Performances claims to draw on 25 years of history, all but one track is taken from the 1990s. The exception is Neil Young, who performed "No More" all the way back in 1989. A rundown of the rest of the tracks reads like a roster of the 1990s always-on-the-radio club. The delights on this disc are few and far between. Beck's George Harrison impression on "Nobody's Fault But My Own" is a great turn for the man associated with funky stoner grooves, but longtime fans of the show will remember George Harrison dueting with Paul Simon in the late 70s. That moment is neither here nor on Volume 1. If the companion volume strove for a bit of balance between the past and present, Volume 2 is shamelessly tailored for sales, and not as an archive. --Jason JosephesCustomer Reviews:

Volume One of the Saturday Night Live: The Musical Performances is a lot like the show itself--some bits work, some don't. What works is Elvis Costello's infamous performance of "Radio Radio," a direct middle finger to those at his record label who insisted he perform the less controversial "Less Than Zero." Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" is a faithful but even more delightful reading of his finest post-Garfunkel hour. The Grateful Dead's performance is noteworthy simply for the fact that it's the Dead. Other than that, Volume One is sorely dependent on showcasing rote readings of really famous pop songs. That's passable for newer artists like Jewel or the Dave Matthews Band, but even Eric Clapton sticks to playing the tired and sappy "Wonderful Tonight" in a performance some dozen-odd years after the song was a bona fide hit. --Jason JosephesCustomer Reviews:
OK, OK......it's not the compilation of your favorite SNL's.................2007-01-22
Lame.......2006-07-18
The Costello performance is great though.
Where is DEVO? B-52's? DVD showing Bowie/Nomi etc?! Cheap!.......2005-04-23
Zzzz..........2004-02-18
The one exception is Elvis Costello's driving "Radio, Radio," which, of course, had the fake-out open (the first 15 seconds from "Less Than Zero," before he abruptly switched gears, making him part of SNL legend). Note to Lorne Michaels: that ain't "Alison" he was playing, contrary to your recollection in the liner notes.
Speaking of which, considering these performances from a TV show, what dork in Dreamworks' design department decided not to use a single image from the shows in question for the CD booklet? No wonder this puppy headed straight for the cutout rack.
Let the people choose..........2003-10-26
I agree with another reviewer that these performances should also be put out on DVD. However here's another idea: put EVERY SNL musical performance out on one of the new online music services like iTunes and let the fans buy the performances they want! I'd pay to construct my perfect SNL musical guests CD. Think about it.
