Monty Python's Matching Tie and Handkerchief is a 1973 collection of (mostly) album-only interwoven sketches. The best bits are ones that take full advantage of the radio idiom--"Novel Writing," in which sports announcers breathlessly chronicle the first sentence of Thomas Hardy's newest book; or "Wasp Club/Tiger Talk," in which a typical BBC show about pets quickly turns into a savage fight for life inside the studio. John Cleese, having practiced on the mid-1960s radio show I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again is the most assured performer on the album. But Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and quasi-Python Neil Innes all figure prominently. Very British, somewhat 1970s, Matching Tie and Handkerchief is an absolute joy for any Python fan. A minor quibble: the LP sported a cool double-grooved side 2, and every time you put the needle down, you didn't know which lineup of sketches you would get. Obviously--and unfortunately--the CD can't do this. --Michael Gerber

4 out of 5 stars Our Loss is Our Gain.......2007-01-29

I've never met teenagers who didn't believe they're the first wave of fans who've "discovered" Monty Python. I think I was in the second such wave, back in the late '70s. One of the things we did for jollies back then, besides going to midnight showings of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," was playng Python records at parties. The "Matching Tie and Handkerchief" was a big fave because of that trick groove on the second side. It was a joke on us fans. You had to finagle around forever with the needle to find it, and the image of the Pythons having a nasty laugh at our expense seemed to make it that much funnier.

Most of the recorded content is just as funny. One or two items fall flat, and there are the usual "Huh?" moments that don't translate well from British to American cultures and sensibilities (and maybe that's why the "Oscar Wilde" sketch is there, to help us out--even if it doesn't, it's still funny).

The majority of these sketches hold up very well. The four bonus tracks are amusing, good enough to compensate for the now-lost hidden groove gimmick. I'll be taking this CD with me on long road trips, but if I'm going to a party, I'm digging out my LP.

5 out of 5 stars For thinking people only.......2005-08-19

Take the good from the comments below. The third side *was* brilliant (on lp), and the audio-only tracks *are* up there with the best of their work. Leave aside the classics on this (like the philosopher's drinking song) and appreciate the brilliance of the pieces no one knows. Want the best Python line nobody ever quotes? Try: "Ah yes, his head's been ripped off." Or perhaps: "Very witty, Wilde, very witty." Nobody could combine smart and stupid as well as these blokes.

3 out of 5 stars Even on a bad day, Python shines.......2004-05-15

Matching Tie And Handkerchief is easily the weakest of the Monty Python studio LPs, though of course that still makes it pretty good.

While some sketches fall flat (the "Great Actors" sketch, for instance, is well-researched but fails to include any actual jokes), and others drag on too long ("Cheeseshop"), there is some excellent silliness to make up for the odd dull patch. In particular, the "Novel Writing" sketch is a superb skit on sports commentary, the sheer exuberance of the performance makes "Bruces" a delight, and "Background To History" is built around some genuinely catchy songs from Neil Innes.

It's hard to shake off the feeling that the double-groove on the original LP was the album's best gag, but despite that, and despite a few frankly rubbish sketches, this is still a must-have for the Python fan.

5 out of 5 stars funny,i gave it 5 stars to bring up the average.......2003-03-19

This is just great. I copied what Thomas Hardy writes for his novel, and the bruces club rules, and put it in the cd case. This is a great album. On the original album, two grooves were on one side, so it would randomly pick one side. It's fun to experiment with, and it's one of those album jokes, that just isn't the same on cd. One of my favorite's is the world war noises skit. Very funny. You can pick this up pretty cheap, so why not do it right now?

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic stuff, I wouldn't a bought the thing otherwise ay.......2003-02-25

Once again, here is a example of entertainment that is way over the head of most people. And thank God for that - if this fell in the groove for most people, the world would probably up end and sink, and I mean that in a good way since I would not want to "offend" anyone of a certain "way" who might disagree with this statement (and I certainly don't want the world to "up end" and sink). You are the "way" you are, and that's it, so bless you and have a nice day.

    4 out of 5 stars "A Re-Issue Both Mis-Matching & Mis-Leading!".......2007-05-07

Once again the word "NEW" is bandied about...sadly,that's WRONG. The "NEW" liner notes are from "The Monty Python Encyclopedia" (1999),and are more opinions than facts. The artwork is not "NEW",it's re-arranged Terry Gilliam art. What is "NEW" is the lack of proper credits! Musician Neil Innes ( with help from members of "Grimms" ),originally credited for his rock songs for "A Background To History Part IV",is now disavowed.

The original artwork joke,is also missing. Originally when you removed the inner sleeve, you find that the Matching Tie & Handkerchief are those of a man whom has hung himself by the tie. There was also originally a lyric sheet for the songs.( Also not re-produced here.).

Even more difficult to reproduce here, would be the 3-Sided disc. Original vinyl versions would play alternate material depending on where your needle landed - thus creating a Side 3.

That aside... the original material is still funny as ever. The Bonus material is Hit & Miss. I'd suggest listening to the samples first, before re-purchasing this version with a skimpy 4 extra tracks.

The albums are my favorite way to experience M. Python. While the tv show is a bit dated visually, this set sounds sparklingly fresh.
On the negative side, the booklet is meager, a rehash mostly of pages from Big Red Book, etc.
Another minor annoyance is that there are no track breaks; i.e., each cd has only 3 or 4 tracks, one for each LP side. So you can't really listen to just one particular bit.
Still, this is a great way to acquire (almost) all the Python records.
