New Age music, ambient electronica, and spiritualized hip-hop received their first major, K-Tel-like treatment in 1996 when Virgin Records assembled Pure Moods. The "As Seen on TV" compilation quickly became a hot seller, and it would be nice to think that its popularity has as much to do with the music as the marketing. To be sure, Pure Moods offers genre hits aplenty: from Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to "Sadness" from Enigma; from a dance mix of the "X-Files Theme" to edits of vintage electronica from Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells) and Jean Michele Jarre (Oxygene). Beyond other selections of beat-enhanced chants and a few other popular themes ("The Mission," "Twin Peaks"), the album, refreshingly, also includes a few selections noteworthy only for their originality and quality. A three-track section near end of the 70-minute disk features affecting soft African chants from Geoffrey Oryema, followed by "My Wife with Champagne Shoulders," a dollop of regal, faintly ethereal romanticism from master film scorer Mark Isham, then a robust piano workout, "The Promise" from Michael Nyman (The Piano). With so many elements of interest on its 17 tracks, the album's broad diversity is sure to have broad popularity. --Terry Wood

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N I G M A or E N Y A. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of the others in the series, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-06-14

Great compilation of electronic music for it's time. A lot of depth to it, you don't get to the 5th or 6th song and start getting into what seems like "filler".

5 out of 5 stars Classical relaxation.......2007-05-20

I loved the music on here they are so peacful like the xfiles theme tubular bells with the overy babbling melody and crockettes theme which was the best song with no vocals and they saved the best for last LILY WAS HERE with excellent non vocaling music with lite accoustic guitars and perfect saxaphone playing with a touch of soothing melody. My mothers into spiritual things mostly and she loves this pure moods mix of peacful music. I use to listen to this while I sleep I loved it but now I sleep with the fan on because I love to hear the sound of the fan while I sleep.

5 out of 5 stars New Age as a child? Really?.......2007-05-17

I must have been around six or seven when I came across this cd through the TV ads. I couldn't buy it myself but I loved the music. It wasn't until I was much older and borrowed it from the library did I remember how much I loved this. I uploaded some of the songs onto my computer, only because I had downloaded some of them already. I started listening to the other pure moods and it's still the same.

Flowing music between ambient, new age, and soft electronica it pulls up its own forrest of emotion as it pulls you closer into the center of yourself. YOu find those pieces of you again that you haven't discovered. A must have for anyone wanting to get in touch with themselves, or just don't know how to relax after a hard day at work.

5 out of 5 stars The Sway.......2007-05-16

I must admit, I've always felt kind of silly for owning this CD. Yet it's got wonderful songs on it. Each one sets a tone that carries you throughout. I've had this CD for years and I still pull it out and listen to it.

For listeners with a sincere interest in the broad variety of music loosely aligned under the New Age banner, Pure Moods II will strike your ears as something less than a high-concept showcase for the genre and more as a mulligan stew of easy-listening favorites. This is not necessarily a bad thing; yet a recording marketed to the general public as a comprehensive, current, state-of-the-art overview of atmospheric music shouldn't include such ill-fitting oddities as George Benson's "Breezin'," a lite-funk relic from 1976, or "Emily" from jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Happily, the 77-minute, 16-track sampler offers far more items of interest than irritation. It reaches back to 1983 to remind us of an ahead-of-its-time display of Celtic mysticism from Clannad ("Theme from Harry's Game"), and it both opens and closes with superb selections from one of the genre's most admired artists, Loreena McKennitt--very appropriate since, one could argue, discussions on the future of New Age should both begin and end with McKennitt's name. Despite its few warts, Pure Moods II is a good listen overall. --Terry Wood

I loved the first CD, so got the 2nd one. Quite dissapointed. I thought a handful of the songs on 2 were good, such as Firefly, but overall it just seems like they threw together a bunch of songs to sell a copy of a popular CD.

4 out of 5 stars Another Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"Pure Moods was such an unexpected success that it launched a number of spinoffs and, eventually (and perhaps somewhat inevitably), Pure Moods II. Although it isn't quite as consistent as its predecessor -- George Benson's 'Breezin`' feels out of place among among these atmospheric cuts, but not nearly as much as Massive Attack's menacing 'Teardrop' -- but fans of the first will still find it to quite enjoyable, especially since it features Vangelis' 'Chariots of Fire,' Loreena McKennitt's 'Mummer's Dance' and Dream Academy's 'Life in a Northern Town,' three major oversights from the first Pure Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and extraordinary compilation, a must have!.......2006-09-11

What a marvelous collection of mesmerizing music this is. I have been listening to this album all week, as I can't get it out of my head. Pure Moods are one my favorite collections as they bring awareness of similar music that goes together so well. The beauty of this album is the mix of music that evokes a certain mood, while not sounding all too similar.

Starting off with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers Dance" a hypnotic song from the first note that sounds like time travel from ancient Byzantium to the mystic Celtic seas followed by Montezuma, one of my favorite Cusco pieces. Cusco is a duet of two German keyboard players Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze who make their enigmatic music sound very original and South American. The music is not traditional; it's a mix of outer space, new age and pan flutes. Very interesting and incredibly likable.

"Nightingale" by Yanni is just incredible, every time I have it on I almost forget I am listening to music, I simply feel it and I am always amazed at how gorgeous it sounds and whenever I hear this song it feel like the first time I am hearing it as it stuns me.

Another favorite of mine, Adiemus makes an appearance, the interesting figment is that
the language is made up by Karl Jenkins, the sounds are not meant to distract the listener from the music. It is a mix of classical and world music with great freedom of movement and is the kind of music they use in breathtaking movie soundtracks.

Delerium's "Euphoria" almost sounds like a Madonna song, is lovely and spirited with a breath of enigma. There is also "The Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, another strong musical piece that does sound like an actual storm of music.

"Teardrop" by Massive Attack sounds like song everything knows they heard somewhere but they don't know what it is. My favorite part is the base beat, it sounds like the human heart.

The rest of the performers from Lovely and church like Clannad which make me feel like I am in an ancient monastery listening to the monks, to "Chariots of Fire" a classic from Vangelis to wonderful and earthy "Breezing" that sounds like the first day of spring to Enigma, to me the empress of New Age. This collection is stellar and each song is a 5 star to me.

This cd makes me happy; it's relaxing, lovely, and addictive and provides great inspiration when I need it to concentrate while I work on my art. Each song has been carefully hand picked to hit the listener with a magnitude of emotion and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who needs to sit back and be transported. The songs feel like caresses of ancient wind on the face and make me feel like I have been meditating for hours. Pure Moods is an excellent cd to pick up by someone who needs an introduction to new Age and relaxing music. So far this has been my favorite disc, but they are all lovely.

If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-05-31

I bought this based on the cover, I was at a flea market and loved the purple and intersting artwork. Now I have lost the cover but know where the cd is at all times, only 4 songs are songs I could live without (11-14) the rest are wonderful, amazing and truly a joy to listen to. I will be checking out the samples of the other pure moods, to see which one I will make my own, next. A great way to relax after a stress filled day, or start the day listening on the drive to work.

What's most surprising about the Pure Moods series is not that it is so popular, but that the music on it actually represents some of the best New Age and modern instrumental music, rather than scraping the barrel. For every piece of Enya pop froth--like her "Only If," which opens the album--there is a deep and impassioned exploration like Sheila Chandra's virtually a cappella "Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean." Yanni's bombastic "On Sacred Ground" is balanced by Moby's soulful trance groove, "Porcelain." Sometimes those juxtapositions don't work out well. The overwrought romanticism of pianist David Lanz's "Cristofori's Dream" can only suffer being sandwiched between the soul-searing vocals of Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers (Massive/DB Mix)" and the Geoffrey Oryema/Brian Eno hymn, "Land of Anaka." With more than a quarter of the album drawn from the 1980s, there are some influential early gems here for new listeners, including Kitaro's wistful "Silk Road" and Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." --John Diliberto

I did not find that I enjoyed it as much as Pure Moods, Vol. I

Pure Moods Vol I, I think is still the best

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!!.......2006-11-16

Anyone who's actually reading an online review of a Pure Moods album has to be, in my most humble of opinions, an established fan of the franchise, and I'm no exception: I LOVE Pure Moods. I have all 5 installments and Christmas Moods.

But on Pure Moods III, there is one song that simply does not belong: "Silk Road" by Kitaro. That has to be the most annoying, shrill, plodding sequence of sounds I've ever come across. I only listen to that track about 33% of the time. (I sporadically listen to it, just to see if I can hear it differently that time.) I would like to make a burn of this CD that does not contain that song.

Everything else rocks my socks.

Buy Pure Moods.

Pure Moods volume 3 is probably the second best in the series after the original Pure Moods. With mainstays such as Yanni and Enigma how can you go wrong? Powerful tracks like "Deliver Me" from Sarah Brightman and Peter Gabriel's "Games without Frontiers" highlight this release. As with the rest of the Pure Moods series this is very good and worthy of repeat listenings. Other great CD's include Imogen Heap, any Digital Moodz CD and Enigma's 1st CD or LSD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best in the New Age Genre.......2005-12-02

Pure Moods: Vol. 3 is one of my favorite New Age CDs, which is such beautiful mix of sublime music from various artists. Suprisingly, the CD both energizes and calms.

Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel has such a satisfying, mellow groove, yet it seems to take the spirit straight to higher plains. It's not only ear candy, but enhances altered states of consciousness.

On Sacred Ground is one of my favorite Yanni songs, and it's on here, too! All I can say is "major goosebumps." It's like being in the Universal Cathedral of Spirit and having God sing to you.

Diva Sarah Brightman adds her smooth soprano voice to the track called Deliver Me. It has a pop groove, but weaved into the background is the etheric keyboards that gives it that flavor that appeals to both the ear and the spirit. When I listen to this song, I feel my heart chakra just blow wide open, receiving the love that the Universe provides in abundance.

Dela Dela by Sacred Spirit starts off with a deep flute reminiscent of a Native American ceremony. Although a pop beat ensues, the song is still undergirded by the strings, which makes it feel orchestral, but very tribal. The tribal aspects is punctuated by what sounds like Native American chanting, but then the female lead takes over once again. It's a song that penetrates, daring you to look away...but you just can't. Then it segues back into the strings, which sucks you right back in to the groove.

The only song I'm not particularly crazy about is Enya's Only If; it's a good song, but so much of Enya's music is overplayed, especially for movie trailers and soundtracks.

This CD contains Christofori's Dream (the 1988 piano masterpiece) as well as songs by Moby, Brian Eno, Enigma, and others, for a total of 16 songs.

I was disappointed in the CD's because the 5th CD in the grouping of 5 CD's doesn't play on my Bose CD player. I even tried to play it on another CD player without any luck. The first 4 CD's are quite nice to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars New Age Pure Moods.......2006-08-28

This is not one of the Pure Moods selections but still it does have some good music on the discs. The music is pretty well done and it is great to just sit back and relax to. I don't think it is cheaply made and the sound is very good and clean. I recommend it if you like this New Age type of music. Well worth the price as far as I am concerned. Four discs of music (37 pieces) and a DVD with 55 minutes of music with a slide show on top of it. Enjoy yourself.

Bagpipe music, even when framed within reflective contemporary settings, is most agreeably digested in small increments. This explains why the 17 mostly traditional selections on Scottish Moods clock in at no longer than three minutes and 41 seconds. Unlike other installments in Virgin Records' Moods series, this is not a multi-artist compilation but rather the work of a single performer, unheralded piper David Methven, and a little-known backing group, the Munros. Taken in the prescribed small doses, Methven and company create many pleasant sonic miniatures that evoke mist-heavy, grandfatherly images of things virtuous and noble. Methven's approach is dignified and thoughtful, inclined more toward plaintive melodies than interminable drones. The contemplative backdrops (dreamy synths, acoustic guitar, gentle, wordless choral passages) that underpin his piping nicely embellish the album's overall sense of serenity and longing. A good recording overall, it plays best in a multidisc CD player set on "shuffle" when coupled with other Celtic-influenced recordings. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars A Celtic Fan!.......2003-06-15

I LOVE CELTIC MUSIC!!!!! IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC.
This cd is awesome and is perfect to add to your celtic cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful bagpipe music!.......2001-10-22

If you love the bagpipe, you'll love this CD. The Highland Bagpipe is not exactly known for being the most relaxing and soothing instrument in the world, however, with the combination of guitar, voice, and other instruments, the music is indeed relaxing and beautiful. Try "Highland Cathedral" or Abide with Me".

5 out of 5 stars scottish moods.......2001-03-09

The world is divided (not equally) into two groups of people: Those who HATE bagpipe music, and those who APPRECIATE and LOVE it! If you are in the group who loves the music of the "pipes", you will enjoy this selection. This "unique" music belongs at funerals, weddings, anniversaries, wars and anything Scottish. However, after listening to the "pipes", you may want to go to war~~~even if there isn't one going on! (That's the only drawback!)How can anyone not be inspired by the glorious and sometimes melancholy music of the "pipes" and, like Sean Connery yearn for Scottish Independence?

5 out of 5 stars A truely moving C.D.!.......2000-07-14

Having been born and bred in Scotland it has become second nature to recognise the quality and acurate tone achieved in David Methven's pipe playing. I found the CD very enjoyable to listen to and the tunes were very moving. Since the CD is titled, "The Lone Piper" in Scotland, I found the mood and atmosphere that was created reflects remarkably with David. (A personal friend of mine.) For anybody that is involed in piping or for anybody that enjoys the music- this CD is recommended. Fortunately, I have the opportunity to listen to his fine quality playing several times a week and every performance makes me proud to be Scottish! Best of luck David, and also to the Munroes!

5 out of 5 stars This is what I was looking for in bagpipe music.......2000-07-09

This is a beautiful CD. I love bagpipes for any duration of time but this one is especially beautiful. The Munros vocalization only add to the enjoyment. David Methven is a talented piper. The selections are wide ranging and are a good mix of the traditional pipe music as well as the newer "Flower of Scotland". I especially enjoyed "Highland Cathedral". I think Terry Wood says it all in his review. I was very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"Unlike its predecessors, Pure Moods and Celtic Moods, Instrumental Moods doesn't follow any specific style. Instead, it strings together a number of instrumentals from different genres, from new age (Enigma), reggae (Afro Celt Sound System) and worldbeat (Cusco) to rock (Eric Johnson, Santana), film scores (Ennio Morricone), pop (Vaness-Mae) and trip-hop (Massive Attack). The only connection these songs have is their laidback tone, and that happens to be enough, since the diverse range of styles prevents the record from being monotonous. Not all of the songs are familiar, but there are enough recognizable pieces to hold the attention of the curious, as they discover that Instrumental Moods is fine mood music. ~ Rodney Batdorf, All Music Guide"

4 out of 5 stars Another very nice "Moods" CD.......2002-06-14

"Instrumental Moods" continues the "Moods" series of New Age music. It is probably the weakest "Moods" CD, but then again, these are instrumental songs, so they don't have any searing vocals in them. The few vocals that *are* in the songs have no real lyric to them. Here's a quick run-through of the ones I liked:

1. "In the Full Moon Light"--3rd Force. A jazzy instrumental dance piece combining piano, percussion and some kind of brass instrument that sounds like a trumpet. Very cool, great opener.

2. "Knocking on Forbidden Doors"--Enigma. A very nice piece, and certainly worthy of being in the "Instrumental Moods" compilation. Just remember that since it is instrumental, it is not one of this artist's best works.

3. "Barcelona Nights"--Ottoman Liebert. A peppy flamenco song featuring distinctive percussion and guitar work. It's sure to make you sweat!

7. "Tempest"--Jesse Cook. Another flamenco song, but a bit more contemporary than "Barcelona Nights", and just as much fun to listen to!

8. "Cliffs of Dover"--Eric Johnson. A great electric guitar instrumental, and the only roof-shaker on the CD. Curiously, however, it reminds me more of Hawaiian surfers than cliffs in Delaware.

10. "Weather Storm"--Massive Attack. See #2.

13. "Widescreen"--Vanessa Mae. An achingly beautiful song, featuring a seductively played violin.

14. "Gabriel's Oboe"--Ennio Morricone. A slow song, featuring the soothing sounds of an oboe. A wonderful example of the brilliant soundtrack for "The Mission".

15. "Cristofori's Dream"--David Lanz. This exquisite piano piece has the honor of being the most beautiful song I've ever heard, and my favorite one on the album. It's also in "Pure Moods III".

"Monteczuma" and "Cradelsong (Dawa)" are two good songs that are also in "Pure Moods II", but "Monteczuma" is much shorter in this CD, and this edition of "Cradlesong (Dawa)" doesn't feature Cherokee Rose, so if you're only buying this CD for those two songs, just stick with "Pure Moods II".

The rest of the songs ("Heat [from The Fifth Element]", "Midnight Express", "Samba Pa Ti", "Sure-As-Not", "Gathering of the Tribes") are just dull, forgettable techno. However, I would still say that this CD is worth buying, and is certainly one of the best instrumental compilations out there. A "Pure Moods IV" will be released in October--I can hardly wait until then!

5 out of 5 stars Very soothing and relaxing.......2002-04-03

I'm a huge fan of the Moods series. I almost have all but a couple of the cds associated with this series. I just recently acquired "Instrumental Moods". Now while I do enjoy this compilation, I can't help but wonder how this cd is any different from the Pure Moods cds. A lot of these songs would be ideal for any of the Pure Moods cd like Enigma's "Knocking On Forbidden Doors" and Sacred Spirits' "Dawa (Cradlesong)". Another interesting tidbit, David Lanz's "Cristofori's Dream" is also on "Pure Moods III". I guess someone wasn't looking when that cd was compiled. Asides that I thoroughly enjoyed the compilation. The music is very soothing to relax too after a long day at the office. I particularly loved the tracks by Sacred Spirits, Eric Johnson, Enigma, Cusco, Ennio Morricone and David Lanz. There isn't a song on this album I did not like.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great compilation.......2001-12-07

With any collection like this a mixed bag is expected. The majority of the songs are fairly good but not really memorable i.e. the songs by Liebert,Cusco,Massive Attack,Santana,Ennio Morricone. The highlights are David Lanz's Cristofori's Dream,a tender, romantic tune;Jesse Cook's The Tempest absolutely smokes with flamenco fire, and Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover is one of the all time great guitar instrumentals. Most guitarists weep when they hear this piece because they know that if they tried 50 years to come up with a work this good they couldn't.This work alone makes the album worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended by a most respected source.......2005-09-25

I was skeptical at first, I thought he was joking: In the very excellent biography of the American jazz genius composer Le Sony'r Ra (aka Sun Ra), John Szwed relates how Sonny admired Les Baxter as one of the most original, adventurous and enlightened composers of the post-war era.

Les who? Never heard of him, so I hit the file-shares for a sampler and wow, he was all over the network; this guy is obviously Big Stuff with the Internet Demographic. I found a few obvious standards, Cole Porter's "I Love Paris" and the like, and thought, "1952 ... this guy must have invented 'easy listening'!"

Only it wasn't Easy Listening. It wasn't easy at all. It was insipid, subversive, outwardly ordinary but weirdly twisted with an expert hand. This guy was inside the lines, but using a pallette like no one before him, full of hooks sure, but just as full of compositional depth worthy of a 20th century composer. This was no Paul Mauriat, no James Last.

And there was an obvious connection to the swing-band dances and even the solemn space chants of the Sun Ra Arkestra! There is a definate influence here, you can see where Les Baxter maybe lacked the cohesive and earnest message of the Arkestra, but you can also see where Les Baxter likely gave Sonny the courage to be boldly unconventional.

To be fair, I haven't liked every tune, some of it seems almost like the Contractual Obligations stuff you get from almost every signed act, but when it cooks, it COOKS ... in a weird sly sort of way. Ultra-lounge? I'd say Nelson Riddle is "ultra lounge"; Les Baxter is beyond lounge, more like the stuff I expect to hear in the penthouse bar atop the first Hilton Hotel placed in Earth orbit.

Or in an elevator on Mars.

5 out of 5 stars Unless they are going to release it again.......2005-06-28

You can likely find this at your public library. I found one in my city. At least then you can hear it, if not buy it. It is worth the effort since copies are so rare and expensive.

5 out of 5 stars IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!.......2005-05-22

I LOVE this collection. While Martin Denny is interesting, he was a hacker, like many others who followed Baxter. Baxter arrangements are much more sophisticated than Denny, utilizing larger orchestras with strings and choruses. The only other composer that reminds me of this is Mancini, who did some nice exotica-flavored things as well.
WHY this collection is out of print is beyond me. I have the companion Martin Denny collection of the same name, and i find myself getting bored with it quickly. Baxter is just IT!
It probably did no good but i emailed Capitol asking why it's out of print and that the demand is still high for it, just that the used prices are ridiculous. I myself had to buy a second copy cause the first got messed up. The first copy was a gift when it was still in print, so not much monetary loss there when i bought it again for around 100.
If anyone should decide to shell out a lot for this and find they really love it. Keep in mind and do what i did, make high quality copies and play those. Leave the original alone. All it takes is once scratch to ruin a cd!! A precautionary measure that can't hurt.
Anyhow, Baxter is the Best!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I have this on DVD.......2004-09-19

Inside my brain, that is. I have listened to this double-CD more than any other over the last few years. This is music that evokes in the listener images of the exotic and the erotic, and is great music for incense burning and lovemaking. If you can, try playing a rain shower or ocean waves CD along with this beautiful music for a truly intoxicating experience. I especially agree with the reviewer that mentioned Jeff Chandler and Rhonda Fleming movies. I believe "Tahiti: A Summer Night at Sea" comes to mind and for me is worth the price alone. This is my single favorite CD, the one I would choose if I could only have one CD to take along, just before I was forced to spend the rest of my life alone with Mary Ann on a deserted island. And although it's a double CD, I'd fight to take them both with me. Both CD's, that is.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT AMAZON SHOULD DO !.......2004-09-14

This CD is great!
However the used prices are sky-high.
Amazon should have an option, to add people to a list of those who whant this item, when it is re-released.

The best Danny Wright CD ever. Cipolla is the finest composition I have ever heard! You cant' go wrong with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Too many good tracks to miss.......1998-06-19

"Moods of Indigo" definitely has some wonderful tracks on it, such as "Wings of Hope," "Cipolla," and "In Memory." The addition of two classical pieces brings a particularly unique touch to the CD.

While "Moods of Indigo" is relaxing, the beautiful but simple piano style does get tiresome after a while. Despite some of the repetitiveness, this still has too many good tracks to miss.
