A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07

I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.

Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."

My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.

This is a 1915 show but it has more snap and charm than the current long melodramas that masquerade as entertainment

I've found it, at last!.......2002-09-07

It's been so long since I lost my record collection which included this album that I'd almost forgotten it. Missa Hilarious is a jewel, especially for an Episcopalian or Catholic who would be familiar with the service music Schickele's lampooning. "Gloria" is one of my all-time favorites.

Along with "The Wurst of PDQ", this is the CD to buy.

Short, sweet and satisfyingly funny.......2000-10-29

This is another classic member of the P.D.Q. Bach collection by Peter Schickele, on which the good Professor takes us on a journey through P.D.Q.'s writing for different milieus.

The first item is the "Missa Hilarious," which purists are advised to avoid at all costs - if this weren't offered in the spirit of good clean fun, I am sure many would find it offensively blasphemous. Even so, I cannot help chortling at such moments as the "Gloria," in which the words aren't quite those that one would expect... The customary array of weird and wacky musical instruments required for P.D.Q. Bach's music is here as well, and puts the finishing touches on the comic effect.

"Echo Sonata, for two unfriendly groups of instruments" is equally amusing - and pokes fun at the trends of contemporary music making along the way whilst being short and digestible. Also digestible (just about!) are the Three Christmas Carols that end the programme: "Throw the Yule Log on, Uncle John" is perhaps a bit predictable, "O Little Town of Hackensack" doesn't work as well as it might have done (although that may have something to do with the tune employed- very different that the classic tune I'm used to as a British cathedral singer), and "Good King Kong looked out" is an absolute blast, with its tongue-twisting vocal sound effects, catchy rhythm and melody, and the surprise appearance of... well, that wouldn't be a surprise if I told you!

Also on the programme is one of Peter Schickele's own pastiche works: "Eine Kleine Nichtmusik," which is a justly famous and side-splitting re-composition of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" with added woodwind and brass parts. Whether you laugh or scoff at this, it is undeniably a prime example of the fact that Peter Schickele really is an accomplished and learned musician- only someone with a deeply-honed musical background could pull off a spoof like this in such a way that it actually works.

Though it's just forty minutes long, this disc is very amusing. P.D.Q. Bach's portrait could not have been painted much better than this...

Mozart would have liked this one.......2000-07-07

I spent a long time looking for this! Some P.D.Q.Bach output is frankly poor slapstick - no doubt funny in concert, but it doesn't wear well on disc. However, I can forgive all for the `Eine Kleine Nichtsmusik': a delight to any classical music fan with a sense of humour. As far as I can make out, the strings play Mozart's `Eine Kleine Nachtsmusik' pretty straight, while the brass and wind play anything else from the concert repertoire which harmonizes even vaguely. The result is deliciously outrageous (the sudden fanfare from `Petrushka' is wonderful) and occasionally sublime (however did he spot that `I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair' goes with the slow movement?). Here, at least, Schickele has achieved the high level of some of the Gerard Hoffnung music festivals. The `Echo Sonata' is also fun - a simple idea, nicely executed. The `Missa' is OK (especially the Gloria and the hippy Sanctus), but some of the performers (and more so in the carols) have perhaps not realized that musical humour needs to be performed with style, not just bashed through, or the impact of the contrast (serious music vs. joke) is lost.

(Of other P.D.Q.Bach offerings, my favourite is `Iphigenia in Brooklyn'.)

To those of you who've studied music history and the classic formation of the Masse, this album will be particularly poinient. To those who haven't, it's just plain fun, from the Angus dei to Gloria, it'll have you in stitches

Beautiful Christmas Music.......1999-12-11

We first heard this CD on NPR while returning home from a business trip. We ordered the CD as soon as we could. The music is as close to perfect as choral music can be. The songs are short, so the pace changes appropriately. Most of the selections are familiar Christmas carols with a few surprises. We've sent copies to our friends to enjoy.

The smartest political satirists working the Washington, D.C. Beltway--and maybe the entire United States--have made two funny and politically incorrect Christmas records that are marred only by the shifting political (mis)fortunes of the scene. Since All I Want for Christmas Is a Tax Increase was recorded in 1993, its batch of Clinton jokes and bye-bye Bushie and Quayle jabs don't travel all that well through time. But as history lessons from the early 1990s, they make for great reminiscences and grave grimaces at the most wonderful time of the year (when you can still sneak some soft money into your favorite presidential candidate's back pocket). Perhaps the most humorous--and timeless--thing on this set are the alleged album-jacket remarks from Larry King, Tom Clancy, Al Gore, Bernard Shaw, and George Bush about the bipolar, bipartisan troupe. "Some people in Washington are confused," says Gore, "but the Capitol Steps are not." Its not bad. I bought the CD a week ago, expecting a little more than I got, but still, its pretty good. I loved most of the tracks, but some of 'em just didn't sound that great. But its not like they sucked. They were awesome. A must-get for the sadistic-mocking, Christmas-loving, Clinton-hating/loving, anti-holy man or woman. I'd get it. oh wait, I did!!

Here's a tip: If you do a search ..., you can find a sample music clip of this hilarious version of Silent Night - and yes it IS sung by real cats and it's histerical. The clip is very short so you'll need to purchase the CD in order to hear the whole tune - but it's worth it. The album contains several other (non-cat voicing) Christmas songs which really round out the experience. You can't go wrong getting this CD.
