Elvis Years 1962-63 [Karaoke]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This might be called the anti-Callas Bohème. This was Renata Tebaldi's second recording, made in her vocal prime in luminous stereo, surrounded by Italian colleagues who had lived with the opera as long as she had. The defining moment is the middle section of her famous aria "Mi chiamano Mimi," when the voice unfurls to its full, almost superhumanly rich glory. It's a jaw-dropping experience. Licia Albanese and Maria Callas went more to the heart of the character, but this is the ultimate experience for that subset of opera lovers known as "tone queens." Carlo Bergonzi is characteristically elegant; conductor Tullio Serafin is, typically, the rock-solid Puccini oracle, making this recording like a comfortable old shoe. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars A Casual Fan Semi-Review..........2007-05-29

Being a fan,but not a fanatic of Elvis,I came across this new collection of hits from him and thought it was a great time to buy. I had purchased an old hits of his from the 80's, on cassette.Of course,I know the standard hits.Alison,Pump It Up,Accident's Will Happen and my fave, What's So Funny...,among a couple of others. Noticed a whole bunch of songs I wasn't familiar with and look forward to hearing them, when I receive this new set.Of late,I am digging deeper into many classic artists I listen to.Elvis fits into that. For that reason,I am giving this collection,4 stars. For the songs I know. After listening to the others, perhaps I can raise it to 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars "The Only Elvis That Matters" Done Justice.......2007-05-20

In my opinion, this is the best single-disc Elvis Costello compilation anyone has ever released. In fact, it may even be the best introduction to E.C. out there (He's so stylistically diverse that no single album is an effective introduction, and both of the more extensive collections - "Girls Girls Girls" on Columbia and "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" on Rhino - would probably be overwhelming to someone unfamiliar with the majority of his work). Also, the collection "Rock and Roll Music," as is evident in the title, ignores his non-"Rock and Roll" songs.

But this disc finally gets it right. There was a "The Very Best of Elvis Costello & the Attractions" single-disc issued on Rykodisc in 1994 that came close, but as good as that disc was, this collection makes three substitutions that are actually improvements: "(The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes," "New Lace Sleeves," and "Almost Blue" replace "Watch Your Step," "New Amsterdam," and "Love Field."

Not only are the substitutions slightly better songs in my opinion, they also paint a more complete picture of Elvis Costello as an artist and writer. Especially "Red Shoes" - if you'd only heard the ballad "Alison" and the reggae-influenced "Watching the Detectives" from his debut album, you'd have no idea what to expect from the rest of the CD, but "Red Shoes" really sets the tone for the rest of that disc (and it's just an amazing song). Some people complain that these songs have been repackaged too many times, but I have a hard time arguing with the final result.

The remastering of this collection sounds as good as the Rhino remasters (which managed to be a slight improvement over the already great-sounding Rykodisc versions), and I really don't understand why some people complain about the sound (but I never owned any of the vinyl records, so maybe I am missing something). Still, the sound is the best that I've heard on CD, and in terms of song selection, this is a near-perfect set. For some, this will be all the Elvis Costello they ever need. For others, it will be the beginning of a long journey into the career of one of the best, most insightful and most interesting singer-songwriters in popular music. Either way, it's hard to go wrong with this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Same Old Music in Yet Another New Sleeve.......2007-05-15

Now that thirty years has passed since his debut, it is apparent to me that Elvis Costello has a lot more in common with his namesake than a singing career. Case in point - Almost immediately upon his arrival at RCA, Elvis Presley's recordings were packaged with little regard to the consumer, and then re-packaged so relentlessly that nobody except the most dedicated, wealthy, and mentally unbalanced collector could possibly hope to amass all of Presley's catalog. With blithe regularity, RCA executives would abuse their position as the historic caretakers of a rock and roll legend by digging deeper and deeper into obscurities, then packaging them with recycled classic recordings. Very, very little was genuinely `new' except the package itself. These collections are innumerable, and I pity the poor soul who suffers the disease of being a completist collector, because it can cost you your bank account, your house, and maybe even your marriage, all in the pursuit of owning all that is Elvis.
It now appears as though the same type of abuse has befallen the recorded works of Elvis Costello. I should know. I was one of those `mentally unbalanced' individuals who felt the need to own every Elvis Costello item released on the marketplace. In the beginning, it was kind of fun. Costello had numerous singles with non-LP b-sides, and plenty of `alternate' versions to keep fans quite busy. I was a part of that vinyl junkie set, a cult of obsessed lunatics who lived to find the rarest single, or an alternate package. After three years and hundreds of dollars spent, I remember feeling betrayed when Columbia issued "Taking Liberties," a collection of Elvis' rare b-sides. In an instant, one five-dollar album made twenty rarities commonplace. Nevertheless, I soldiered on; buying 10" collector's singles, alternate mixes, and all sorts of oddities. Then, the CD era began, and it started to happen all over again. Elvis changed labels (from Columbia to Warner Brothers), and his catalog albums were subjected to not one, not two, but three separate repackagings, each of them containing unique `rarities' that could be obtained nowhere else. A dedicated collector would require four versions of each Elvis Costello album. At this point, I finally surrendered, but I already spent enough to finance a Hawaiian vacation for some record executive and his family of four. Nowadays I simply stand by, amazed as the repackaging craze continues unabated. By my count, the above named collections represent the 10th and 11th re-compilation of Elvis Costello's `hits'. I'm not saying they are bad collections. The booklets contain song lyrics, which is a nice touch, especially for the older material. Naturally, the songs are great and I should know, because I bought each of these tracks at least a half-dozen times already. If you still don't own them, then go ahead and buy them. You will enjoy them. I, however, will stare at my room full of Elvis-related plastic and acknowledge the reason that I never made that trip to Hawaii myself.

i swore i wouldnt buy the elvis cannon again=LPs,Singles,3 sets of CDs etc., unless it was on SACD,and i wont. But the 2 comps were worth a listen, rock and roll for the unreleased stuff{how is it possible?}and 10 years for the 4th remaster.Seeing Elvis's Lexus commercial with him enjoying surround sound just makes me sad for what could have been.Rock on,EC!

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- The best early Costello single CD yet.......2007-05-09

You can't hardly swing a dead cat without hitting Costello's early material in reissue form. With Ryko and Rhino both having taken ever-lengthening passes at his albums, Hip-O picks up the catalog years of 1977-1986 for another round. In addition to a new pair of compilations (this one and "Rock and Roll Music") that skim the initial decade's eleven albums, their May 1 release date also marks the re-re-re-reissue of the albums on CD and the catalog's digital download debut (initially from iTunes, later from addtiional services).

After so many Costello reissues and compilations, this collection is mostly a retail shelving refresher and a beacon for Hip-O's album reissue and digital programs; all 22 of these tracks have been available on CD before. And as with other single-disc Costello anthologies such as Sony's 1990 19-track "Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions" and Ryko's 1994 22-track "Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions," there's simply too much worthy material in Costello's initial eleven albums (not to mention assorted singles and B-sides) to fully essay in 80 minutes.

What you get here is a well drawn sketch that provides the neophyte a sense of Costello's incredible torrent of early creativity, the sustain of his first few years, a few missteps in the mid-80s, and a stronger-than-ever comeback with 1986's "King of America" and "Blood & Chocolate" LPs." Though fans of the albums will mentally flinch at the inter-album segues (and thus the missing classics), condensing Costello's career arc does demonstrate how his punk-era angst and blistering song-writing aged and then reasserted itself in a more mature, but no less powerful form a decade later. Reducing 10 years to a single CD also creates a bit of genre whiplash as Costello applied himself to rock, punk, pop, soul, R&B blues, and jazz.

As on Ryko's 1994 collection, Costello aided in the track selection. No surprise then that there are 19 tracks in common with Ryko's earlier release. The three substitutions add the essential "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," "Almost Blue," and "New Lace Sleeves" in place of the expendable "Watch Your Step," "New Amsterdam," and "Love Field," making this the best single-disc Costello anthology on the market. Costello fans are better off making their own anthologies from the original albums, but those just coming to his work decades after the fact will find this an excellent primer. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5 out of 5 stars One of his best from the Nashville Marathon.......2007-07-08

In 1970 the worlds greatest singer entered the recording studio in Nashville and put on a demonstration of raw energy and power that has stood for the ages.Elvis' mamoth recording session produced some great albums...Elvis Now,He Touched Me,Love Letters and this classic...Elvis Country. It was as unique and innovative as Elvis himself...from the cover art(Elvis' baby photo) to the use of I was Born 10,000 Years Ago in between songs as one fades into another...it is truly a classic.None of these songs sound country however.Elvis gave each work a clear distinction...Elvis made his own style of country.I embrace this album as a true classic.Play It LOUD.

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of Elvis.......2005-12-26

This album captures the very essence of Elvis. It demonstrates country, soul, pop, gospel, and a variety of music types combined in a way that only spells Elvis. I believe that everyone would be an Elvis fan if everyone heard this album. This is a very mature Elvis with some excellent material. His heart and soul are in the tracks. Backing Elvis is a wonderful band with some great backup vocals. I love the snippets of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago." I love this album more than the better known songs on compilations such as 30 #1 Hits. This album plays as fresh today as it did back in 1970. The bonus tracks - most from Love Letters from Elvis - add to the album, especially If I were You and Ain't No Big Thing.

Compare this album to today's "country" artists and you'll see that Elvis shines above them. Nobody sings with the feeling of Elvis. It's straight from his heart.

Elvis - the king of country, rock, pop, and gospel!

5 out of 5 stars Re-issue a Banded Version.......2005-07-22

RCA / BMG should reissue a banded version of this CD. Maybe as a classic double CD thru' their FTD label. Banded meaning the tracks will not have snippets of the"I was born.." at the start and end. The double CD would be the complete album and bonus tracks plus alternates / outtakes on the second CD.

4 out of 5 stars 1970 - Elvis' Greatest Year?.......2005-01-19

ELVIS COUNTRY is, as the liner notes for the reissue suggest, a rather misleading title for this album, most of which was recorded at the exact same early June 1970 sessions which yielded the studio tracks for THAT'S THE WAY IT IS. Country songs had been a sizeable component of the King's output since the Sun era, of course, and Nashville accents had colored much of his repertoire in other genres as well. More to the point, ELVIS COUNTRY is anything but the collection of dung-kicking Dixie ditties such a moniker might suggest. The same huge arrangements, sensitive performances and of course the unfailing taste which served Elvis so well on TTWII are all here too, and while the song selection may lean a bit more overtly toward country material there's plenty of variety. Take "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," which only Elvis could make his own in the wake of Jerry Lee Lewis' seminal rendition; or "Tomorrow Never Comes," here stripped of much of its countriness and transformed into an operatic tour de force with a jaw-dropping finale. The snippets of "I Was Born About 10,000 Years Ago" between all the other songs don't bother me, though it's nice to have the full performance here as well. Of the other bonus tracks, "Got My Mojo Workin'" is a stinging reminder of what a fine blues singer Elvis really was, while "Where Did They Go, Lord?" ranks as one of his stronger non-album singles of the period.
Comparisons between ELVIS COUNTRY and TTWII are inevitable - the albums were recorded simultaneously and released only weeks apart. In this context, ELVIS COUNTRY perhaps suffers a bit beside its better-known and essentially flawless counterpart; but the body of material from which both LPs are drawn is big and flexible enough - in these gifted hands, at least - to render any qualitative distinctions superficial. The King was on a volcanic roll in 1970, and anything he recorded at that time is well worth hearing.

3 out of 5 stars Be Aware .......2005-01-09

Great performances by Elvis and excellent sound quality on the 2000 remaster. However depending on how you listen to music, you may find it hard to live with the fade-in/fade-out segments of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" which actually cut into the mix at the tail-end of each of the original 12 songs, and even overlap the start of a couple of tracks. The song itself is a fine song, and it's there in it's entirety as a bonus track. For me, that is where it should have stayed. This was an "adventurous" decision by Elvis and producer Felton Jarvis, according to the sleeve notes. I would describe it as "disasterous". Irritating, infuriating, astonishing. All of the above. You have been warned.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Essential Elvis CDs.......2007-07-08

In my mind this is the best of the essential Elvis releases. The first track I Didn't Make It On Playing Guitar is a classic Elvis jam.Just Pretend,Patch It Up and Bridge Over Troubled water also stand out.Cindy,Cindy and Where Did They Go Lord are Awesome. Its Only Love is one of my favorites. These out-takes and alternate takes are historical not just enjoyable. It gets you inside his historic recording marathon in Nashville. Its the next best thing from going back in time and actually being there. If you don't own this already....you're really missing out.

5 out of 5 stars A Hundred Years From Now.......2007-04-12

More great music from the King. You may think you have heard all of his music, but you'll be surprised with this collection.

5 out of 5 stars That's all in the past........2005-04-28

This CD features unreleased takes of songs that were mostly recorded in June of 1970, with a few tracks recorded up to a year later. This was a definite high point in Elvis' recording career. Elvis was in great voice at the time, and is clearly having fun most of the time. A lot of these alternate takes sound "sloppier" than the master takes, but that just adds to their charm. If you are a fan of Elvis' work in the 1970s, you should get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars ELVIS IN HIS PRIME.......2000-11-11

IF YOU LISTEN CARFULLY TO THIS CD YOU WILL NOTICE A NUMBER OF WORD CHANGES THAT SHOW UP ON HERE AND NOT ON THE ALBUMS LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE OUTTAKES AND ENJOY THE GOLDEN VOICE AND SONGS NOT ON ANY CD AVAILABLE. AND AS A 35 YEAR COLLECTOR, I HAVE A FEW OF HIS RECORDINGS AND HIS FIRST SONG ON HERE IS NOT ANYWHERE TO BE FOUND

3 out of 5 stars One very amazing track..........2000-09-26

Most of the tracks on Volume 4 are better in their originally released versions, including the stuff that ended up on "Elvis Country" with overdubbed horns. Unlike Volume 5, which shows EP in a very loose and funky mood, the tracks here just sound...professional. The one exception is the undubbed "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with just Elvis, piano, bass, and drums. In this fan's opinion, this is the single greatest recorded moment of EP's entire career, and when he sings "I'm on your side", you'll know everthing the boy from tupelo was all about.

4 out of 5 stars 50 years of Rock and Roll, on cd .......2005-05-25

Last year was the 50 anniveristy of Rock and Roll, and the town of Memphis, someone from there, brought this cd out, with 21 tracks, inclduing 2 songs fom Elvis Presley, who lived in Memphis, along with some other places during his carrer, but he lived there for a long time. The cd also has songs from Roy Orbison & the Teen Kings, Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two, Aretha Franklin, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The first songs were recored at Sam Philips's Sun Studios, but around track #10 or so, check the booklet that comes with, are songs that are from another recording studio. The cd has songs from the 50's, 60's and early 70's, and nothing too recent. So if you are a fan of these singers, maybe not all, this is denifly something you want to give a listen to. From songs like That's All Right, Ooby Dooby, Son Of A Preacher Man, and I'll Take You there. THe whole song list, and singers are

5 out of 5 stars All Good; Gimme More.......2004-12-03

Starting with "Rocket 88" with Ike Turner playing with his busted amp before R & B (OR rock and roll) were mainstream and ending up far down the line, this is all good stuff. I highly recommend it, and yes, there IS a lot of Memphis stuff here. I considered only 4 stars because how can you cover 50 years in 21 songs? They owe me but I'll gladly pay more for another 21 from the same time frame--if they're as good as these.

5 out of 5 stars All Killer - No Filler.......2004-07-15

If you are a fan of rock-n-roll and more specifically the sounds of Memphis, you cannot go wrong by getting this disc. This is a fantastic sampler of great American music and a superb intro to 20 different GIANTS. All the songs SOUND amazing, too. This should be one of the all-time great "shuffle" discs! Just wish it had 40 tracks instead of 21.

There are few things in the world as dependable, year after year, as the quality of Elvis Costello's music. He's neither as biting nor as rocking as he once was--and he's not always brilliant--but even in his third decade Costello is consistently good. The Warner Bros. years constitute a series of albums beginning with 1989's Spike through 1996's All This Useless Beauty, and Extreme Honey collects notable tracks from five albums. With the inclusion of a hit ("Veronica"), a rarity ("My Dark Life" with Brian Eno), and a never- before-released track, this doesn't encapsulate Costello's earlier brilliance, but it is a good summation of the best of the rest. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars Bittersweet reflections.......2005-02-13

This compilation from the WB years serves as a Best Of and contains some hit singles, although in this later part of Costello's career the hits were fewer and farther between. The collection draws on the albums Spike, Mighty Like A Rose, The Juliet Letters, Brutal Youth and All This Useless Beauty.

The Bridge I Burned sounds a bit messy, but the next one, Veronica, is a tuneful classic that was Costello's first top 20 single in the USA. The track was co-written by Paul McCartney. Sulky Girl is one of Costello's story songs with tempo variation and gripping melodic parts, whilst So Like Candy is a slow ballad in the vein of his early classic Allison. The next one, 13 Steps Lead Down, is an uptempo rocker with a catchy chorus.

All This Useless Beauty is quite a serious masterpiece; this song was also covered by the UK folk legend June Tabor on her album Angel Tiger. The slow and tender ballad My Dark Life is followed by the lilting pop ditty The Other Side Of Summer like a happy ray of sunshine. A highlight of the album is Deep Dark Truthful Mirror; with its intricate piano rolls and poetic lyrics it would make a perfect country song.

Poor Fractured Atlas is a gentle poignant ballad with a lovely melody, whilst The Birds Will Still Be Singing is equally sad with a type of orchestral arrangement with prominent violins and viola. After London's Brilliant Parade, Tramp The Dirt Down continues the mournful mood in its varied instrumentation including bouzouki, uileann pipes, harmonium and glockenspiel. The album concludes with the melodic mid-tempo number All The Rage.

Although very worthy in its own right, Costello's style in the Warner Brothers years differed markedly from that of his early years. The music is more complex, less acerbic and not as immediately accessible. Repeated plays will, however, reveal the beauty of this music. Real rating: Four and a half stars.

4 out of 5 stars Honeyfied. Extremely Honeyfied........2003-11-15

Elvis: The Warner Years.

He managed to crank out 6 albums of unnerving diversity (even for his fans) during his tenure at the home of Bugs Bunny. From the angry Elvis we all love of "Brutal Youth" to the chamber music experiments of "The Juliet Letters" to his pondering thoughtfulness of "All This Useless Beauty," Elvis took on so many tangents that I am sure his label could only scratch their collective heads and wonder (not to mention withhold "Kojak Variety" for five years).

Since confounding our expectations has always been a hallmark of getting a new EC record, "Extreme Honey" is given the responsibility of collecting the better of those discs. It does so fairly well, and throws in a haunting new song, "The Bridge I Burned," which even features a semi-rapped part. The X-Files obscurity with Brian Eno, "My Dark Life," is better. In Eno's usual minimalist but spooky manner, "My Dark Life" is the kind of song you would have expected from the X-Files. That is said as a compliment.

"Extreme Honey" also provides proof that Elvis still has his moments of genius. "I Want To Vanish" is the obvious precursor to his collaborations with Burt Bacharach. "The Other Side Of Summer" has a deceptively cynical lyric riding a wave of Beach Boys harmony. "Veronica" and "So Like Candy" gave some spunk to a moribund Paul McCartney. "Hurry Down Doomsday" roars with all the weirdness that "The Birds Will Still be Singing" carried on the lopsided opposite of the scale. "Tramp The Dirt Down" is probably the angriest song Elvis has ever written, with one of the most gorgeous arrangements. And if you want the blood and guts Elvis, "13 Steps Lead Down" has all the snarling ferocity of his earliest work.

I won't bemoan the lack of a few personal favorites (Elvis does that for us in the liner notes). I will say a wish a track or two from "Kojak Variety" had snuck in, though. What "Extreme Honey" does present us with is that, even in his third decade, Elvis Costello remains one of the premiere songwriters of our times. Worth the price if you don't already have the originals.

5 out of 5 stars The "Angry Young Man" gets mellow.......2000-05-07

There are basically two careers musically that Elvis Costello has been a part of. There are those great years in The Attractions with his hard edge and biting lyrics that made you think will rocking to that incredible music. Then things seemed to change as her grew older in the ninties and eighties, and while shades of his anger are present.

Solo hits like "Veronica" and "The Other Side Of Sumnmer" have an edge, but also a very clean and good pop sound. Of course, all of Elvis' songs have had a pop feel while rocking. Also, the fast and raw rock of "Hurry Down Doomsday" is a treat.

Then we get to the older more mature Elvis, displayed in tracks like "So Like Candy" (romantic and depressing), "My Dark Life" (the title speaks for itself) and the beatiful "The Brids Will Be Singing".

In all a stellar collection that displays many sides of the man and a great precrussor for his Burt Bacharach collabrations. "Extreme Hoeny" is an extremely needed CD to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent retrospective, thoughtfully assembled.......2000-04-10

First, in response to the reviewer below me, I understand your underwhelmed reaction to Extreme Honey at first listen; Costello's later work takes a certain amount of time to sink in, unlike his more immediate Rykodisc/Demon work. But it IS remarkably impressive. Just more subtle. Give it some time.

Anyway, Extreme Honey is a far better retrospective of the era it covers than the Rykodisc compilation The Very Best Of Elvis Costello I reviewed elsewhere. Covering most of the finest moments from Costello's recording career from 1989 to 1997, it features comprehensive liner notes where the prior disc had none, as well as sporting an intelligent running order which sets songs in contrast with one another.

This last point is especially appreciated, as the juxtaposition of songs from the different LPs here really works well. I never liked "Kinder Murder," for example, until it came after "The Other Side Of Summer": the perfect snarling antidote to all that summer-of-love production. And strangely enough, the spooky "The Birds Will Still Be Singing" (from The Juliet Letters, of course) SHOULD have stuck out like a trout wedged into a can of sardines, but slots in beautifully between the spooky macho-deflation of "Poor Fractured Atlas" and the spooky travelogue of "London's Brilliant Parade." (Alright, "haunting" is a better word, but I wanted to use "spooky" three times in a row. Wouldn't you?)

So the song selection is mostly pretty fine, but (as always) there are a few gripes. Mainly, that they really misrepresented All This Useless Beauty by including only the three mopey ballads, and not say, "You Bowed Down." In fact, Elvis MENTIONS this in his liner notes, saying that he knows that people would've liked that song (along with "God's Comic" and "Rocking Horse Road," although I was never spun about by that last one) to be here, but "there just wasn't space." Pish-posh! "Hurry Down Doomsday" did NOT need to be here. Everything else arguably did, but that one not only isn't great, it DETRACTS from the CD, just making you go "ugh!" (Yes, just "ugh!" Not "bleaggh" or "yak!" but "ugh!" Strange how that works out, isn't it?).

Other than that, I can't really complain. I mean sure, "God's Comic" and "How To Be Dumb" and "You Tripped At Every Step" aren't here, but - to quote Mick Jones of The Clash - I'm not down, no I'm not down! And also, what IS here, as bait to the hardcore fans, is pretty darn great: you get a new song, the not-bad experiment of "The Bridge I Burned" (I love it when he sings, but I just try to ignore the Portishead-style rapping, for his sake and mine), and you get quite possibly the best song of his career in "My Dark Life," which was thrown away on the Songs In The Key Of X CD.

Okay, maybe not the BEST song of his career (don't you hate constant overuse of hyperbole? It makes it impossible to trust fan reviews), but certainly an absolute highlight of the WB years, and a collaboration with everyone's favorite shiny-domed soundsmith, Brian Eno. Long. Creepy. About the fall of the Soviet Union. What else could you want?

You want what?

Hey, that's illegal!

3 out of 5 stars Extreme Honey - Elvis Costello.......1999-12-26

For those who knew and loved Elvis C. in the early years with the Attractions, this CD will probably disappoint. It's altogether too dark and moody, but it does show the range and diversity of EC. There are some good rockers reminiscent of the Attraction years: 13 Steps Lead Down, Veronica, The other Side of Summer, and Kinder Murder. It's good for those who want a more complete collection without making the investment in the more recent CDs. If this is the "best" of the Warner Bros. years, the CDs must ahve been largely forgetable. For my money, I'm sticking by all the stuff he did with the Attractions--you still can't beat My Aim is True, Armed Forces, and Get Happy--Classic Elvis!

Elvis Costello issued his first three albums within a 16-month span; 2 1/2 Years compiles them, with bonus tracks, in one of the greatest bargains of all time. These are the Rykodisc remasters of My Aim Is True, This Year's Model, and Armed Forces--as revelatory as ever--combined with Live at El Mocambo, a document of a show on Elvis and the Attractions' second U.S. tour (1978) that is available only here. --Rickey Wright

If you can find it at a decent price, & you don't have these cd's, it's worth it. I got it used for less than I'd have paid for the 4 cd's separately. The mixes are good, some of the bonus material is worth listening to, & the booklets & notes are nice.

5 out of 5 stars Raw Power Costello Style.......2005-03-11

This is it! This is the one! Forget the Rhino reissues, this is still the best place for the old school Attractions sound. Reason? El Mocombo (sp?). Simply stated it is one of the most blisteringly honest live albums ever produced! Essentially a bootleg the Mocombo disc gets by on guts and fire alone. Now, I am not suggesting you pay $250 for this box set, especially if you did already fork it over for the Rhino's....BUT! I cannot honestly think of a better way to spend $250.
These old Ryko issues hold their own to the recent Rhino's despite the paucity of bonus material. However, until Mocombo is given its proper due, or you are lucky enough to score one somehow, somewhere, DO WHAT YOU MUST to include this disc in your arsenal of rock'n'roll.
And it cannot be overstated enough: the screaming OWWWWWWW dude does greatly annoy these nerves of mine. Time does diminish his presence though.
      Buybuybuy!

5 out of 5 stars Note to "Dudes who love to yell OWWWW at concerts".......2002-06-02

Brilliant as everyone says. The live album included is killer except for one thing....this dude keeps yelling OWWWWWWWWWW really loudly throughout EVERY song!!!!! In fact, half way through the live set you start listening for the OWWWWW if you haven't heard it in the last 15 to 20 seconds (the way you listen for a snore when a snorer stops breathing for a really long time). And so one of the best live albums ever is ruined by some drunken idiot. An OWWWWWW or two between songs is acceptable if annoying. OWWWWWW's every 10 seconds throughout a concert is worthy of the crowd going Who-concert-in-Cincinatti on you ___. It's like those idiots who blow horns throughout an entire 90 minute soccer game or the people with really bassy sound systems in their cars. We hear you, we acknowledge that you exist, now please shut up!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive and Brilliant.......2002-05-09

For any fan of Costello and almost any fan of rock 'n roll, this set is indispensable. Costello's first 3 albums are included, along with one live disk. All the included albums here have added tracks - many interesting songs not previously released along with alternate versions of standards. One of my favorite new songs is 'Stranger in the House', an early demonstration of Costello's country interests which was left off 'My Aim Is True' because the record company couldn't tolerate the idea of a country-styled song on a rock album.

5 out of 5 stars Genius! Brilliant! Awesome!.......2000-05-26

That's three words to describe this collection of Elvis Costello's first 3 albums - packaged here in an excellent box set from Ryko (who also did a rather good job of repackaging the Bowie back catalogue some ten years ago). Sadly, this box set is not available here in the U.K. anymore (hasn't been for at least 2 years) so us Limeys have to buy it in on import - no problem, especially as the U.S. version features Elvis's name in cutout form on the front of the box - this version went out of print in the U.K. circa 1996. The studio albums are complimented with a superb live CD which was previously unreleased, except as a rare promo LP. Elvis Costello is one of the best songwriters to emerge from Britian since the Beatles...it's no surprise to me that he is so popular in the U.S. as his appeal - like the Beatles, Bowie, Sting, Pink Floyd and other great British acts - is universal (unlike sad British bands like Oasis). Costello's best work was, like Bowie's, his early work and that's what you get here - a collection of his finest work of the late 1970s. Having said that, "Imperial Bedroom" and "King Of America" are also great albums from the 1980s that are worth checking out. This is a great value box set containing some really great music. Well worth every penny, dollar, whatever...get on and and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A Lot of the Essentials.......2004-10-12

So many compilations of Elvis' hits suffer from a lack of chronology. A 1950s hit will sound so much different from, say, "Moody Blue". But there are enough hits on this CD to make it a good investment. There are fewer of the songs other artists made popular which Elvis covered in his recording career after his 1968 "comeback" TV concert. (Was he trying to claim them as his own?) There is some sense of continuity with the real ELVIS hits and it makes for good listening. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars 50 hits is enough to start you off in the right direction........2002-11-04

This relaese, originally released in 1985 to commemorate 50 years after the birth of Elvis Presley, went double platinum a short while ago. Each song on this fantastic release is quite a gem. It gives a little variety of Elvis' musical talent. The rocker, "Hound Dog", the romantic, "Love Me Tender", from the heart, "If I Can Dream", the love songs "Can't Help Falling In Love", the movies, "Blue Hawaii", and so much more! I was excited to get this years ago. Excellent song choices with very poor packaging. On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the best): Packaging = 2, Sound Quality = 4. It might be a little poor in those areas, but a must-have to start your Elvis collection.

      5 out of 5 stars 50 original versions crammed onto 2 CDs........2002-11-02

This collection is just what it appears to be: Elvis' top hits in their original versions crammed onto two CDs. I bought this collection because it had the largest number of Elvis songs I wanted in a single package, without having to buy an expensive box set. I don't know enough to comment on the mixing, but it sounded fine to me; the older songs sound like mono. One unique thing I'd never heard before was the pair of aborted takes left in the intro of "Such A Night," where Elvis miscounted the number of intro riffs. Two songs that really stood out as timeless, quality songs were the newer, longer pieces with strings: "Kentucky Rain" (1970) and "Suspicious Minds" (1969). The songs here aren't in chronological order or any other logical order that I can detect, which is a minor annoyance since these songs cover such a wide span of years and sound.
