3 out of 5 stars Who's on First: A Collection of Classic Routines.......2007-07-18

Well, first off, it took a long time to receive it. Then, when I got it - the cover was cracked. I bought this for my dad, so I waited until he opened it to see if it was damaged. Luckily it wasn't because if I returned, god knows how long it would have taken to get a new one.

I've been happy with every purchase made on Amazon. But, of course, this one was a gift and this is the one that had problems.

4 out of 5 stars "Who's On First" never gets old.......2007-01-12

I've been looking for a digital audio version of "Who's On First" for quite a while. That routine alone is worth the price of the disc. The rest of the sketches are pretty typical Abbott & Costello and are worth a listen or two, but the title track is a timeless piece of Americana. This version is somewhat different than the other audio and video versions that I've heard, but as we all know, eventually we find that I Don't Know is on third base and we just "Don't Give A Darn"... Oh yeah, that's our shortstop!

4 out of 5 stars The original routines and recordings........2006-12-29

Expect some static, and to miss the beginning of the routines if you are not ready immediately after pressing "play". Otherwise, it's all great, classic, stuff unjaded by years of re-performance.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Duo of Golden Age Comedy.......2006-02-23

I used to have this on vinyl... remember those things? It makes you feel like a kid again. I'm starting a collection of these radio legends like Fibber McGee & Molly, Jack Benny, The Whistler, Dimension X, etc.... CD's, of course. (I gotta get wit' the times.)

5 out of 5 stars The funniest comedy team ever........2000-05-09

People today laugh at Seinfeld, Sinbad and others. If they want to hear true comedy, listen to these two. Abbott And Costello simply can't be beat. And who can forget "Who's On First! " That is to comedy like "Stairway To Heaven" is to classic rock. This disc will leave you in stitches and wanting more.

Great, clean fun. Mr. Clower was a classic storyteller and he could really spin a yarn with his unique southern drawl. You will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The mouth of the south.......2007-02-03

Jerry Clower is the classic southern story teller. His stories are extremely funny without the need for profanity. Real "family" entertainment.

Without even hearing this, just looking at the Titles can make me laugh. Some of these I am very familiar with, and my kids had some of them memorized when they were small. Jerry's material has always been so original and TRUE, I know this album has to be something special.

3 out of 5 stars Billy Connolly - Classic Connolly (CD).......2007-06-09

I've only ever heard or seen Billy on TV or DVD's. What I can understand of this disc is funny, but you've got to LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY. It's a live performance and many times the laughter of the crowd drowns out his monologue. And you have to listen very carefully as his Scottish brogue is very strong in this version.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Connolly is like a glass of Guinness Ale.......2006-08-18

This is an excellent piece of Billy Connolly's early work, its rich and darkly humorous set of stories.

He keeps the audience rolling in laughter and he has a great singing voice, which carries the tales along to make you feel your there in the heart of the story.

The only downside of this album is I would not recommend this for first-time listerners; hence the four star rating.
His accent is thick as molasses and sometime hard to understand. My wife and I listened to him and had to re-listen to certain parts to get the punchline, but this is a very good album to listen to learn the true meaning of Jock and Jocular Humor.

I purchased Connolly in NY(DVD); which is one of his more recent works is a better choice to introduce him to new listeners,so they can get used to his accent.

After which I went back and relistened to Classic Connolly and understood his material alot better.

5 out of 5 stars Ray Stevens is always great.......2005-08-18

I have always enjoyed Ray Stevens ever since he was the summer fill in for the Andy Williams Show. I really enjoy listening to his songs.

5 out of 5 stars A very deserving title.......2002-12-20

This CD is classic...and it couldn't have been more truthfully titled. On this latest comedy CD, Ray tackles everything from Jesus and Uncle Sam to over-zealous security guards and annoying motels. The CD opens up with his IRS lament, "If Ten Percent Is Good Enough for Jesus it Oughta Be Enough for Uncle Sam" and from that point forward he doesn't let up on the nuttiness. Only one song is actually 'serious' and that's the great "Meanwhile" ballad but it does have an up-tempo chorus that kicks into high gear to balance with the slow passages...so it isn't a genuine 'ballad'. As with all Ray Stevens albums, there's the stand-out track that makes the album worth buying. On this CD there are a couple of stand-outs: "Super Cop" tells the zany story of a mall security guard that was inspired by Barney Fife, RoboCop, and the 'Tackleberry' character in the Police Academy movies. "The Ballad of Jake McCluskey" is sort of like a new twist on the stereotype that small-town America is full of sex-crazed vixens and good ol' boys. The other stand-out is the "The Motel Song" even though it's satire will only be appreciated by fellow entertainers and regular travellers of the road. The concept of the song deals with the monotony of staying in motels and how they all start to look the same after awhile. A demented gem is "The Bricklayer's Song" in which Ray recounts the hilarious story of what happened to him as he was laying bricks. 'Classic Ray Stevens' is a must for anyone looking for weird or odd songs with entertainment as the sole purpose. Ray Stevens is not a George Jones or Conway Twitty and it isn't fair to look at CDs like 'Classic Ray Stevens' and compare him to his country peers. Put up against other country comedians, though, and Ray always comes out looking like a winner.

3 out of 5 stars Get the box set.......2003-01-07

All of these tracks are re-recordings Miller must have made later in life. The problem is that there is no disclaimer so that the consumer isn't aware of the this until you get the disk home. The box set, The Genius of Roger Miller, is the real McCoy. My recommendation is to spend the money and get the box set.

3 out of 5 stars You'll be happier with an earlier release.......2001-11-30

Disappointing from first track to last. All the spice is gone.

For example in Dang Me, the words: "lack nineteen dollars of having" are all the same note, and spoken, not sung. Apparently his vocal agility was gone. In the same song, "high from the highest treeee-YEEE!" - the high-pitched "YEEE!" on the end is gone.

The same thing in "Chug-a-lug". There's no uplift at the end of "hi-dee-ho". Still a pretty good song but just doesn't sparkle.

The spice in a Roger Miller song is that he transitions from high to low and back, or the reverse. On this disc he might transition up or down, but not back, and that makes it dull.

I give positive points for the collection of songs which is excellent for the price.

"Words are my work, they're my play, they're my passion," Carlin intones at the beginning of his famous "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" bit. He's made a career, a very funny career, of making good on that quote, examining, dissecting, and spoofing America's linguistic foibles, from our fascination with "Sex in Commercials" to our shared "Childhood Clichés." Throughout Classic Gold (which combines three early-1970s cornerstones, FM & AM, Class Clown, and Occupation: Foole), he turns words back in on themselves, mocking the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church he was schooled in, the shallowness of the radio broadcasting he did for a living, and the inanity and insanity of everyday conversation. Few comics are as educated, embracing, or observant as Carlin--or as funny. --Michael Ruby

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Carlin at his Best!.......2002-04-05

I thought that Carlin was hillarious now, but after hearing this album, I think that Carlin's old stuff is the funniest. Don't get me wrong, I love the new and more aggressive Carlin, but I think his most thought-provoking and intelligent humor can be found on his earlier albums.

"Classic Gold" is a combination of three (yes, THREE) of his earlier recordings. The recordings are as follow: "FM & AM," "Class Clown," and "Occupation Foole." All three of them are hillarious, though I think that "Class Clown" is the best one of them all. The recording is fair, keep in mind that this was a while ago. However, the recording on "FM & AM" is a little poor, being that if you listen to it on headphones, you hear more out of the left one and very little from the right. This tends to be a little distracting and annoying. The rest of the recordings improve on the quality.

This is a very funny 2 disc album that no Carlin fan should do without. I think one of the funniest tracks on the album is "let's make a deal," where he suggests that there should be a divorce game show. I also like "class clown," which includes how to gross out squeamish girls. And yes, this album also includes the very famous "seven words you can never say on television." One of the funniest lines on the album is on the first track when he talks about the word, "shoot." He cleverly replies, "They can't fool me. Shoot is ... with two O's in it."

So buy this album and listen to some of the funniest routines by George Carlin. This is an album I will be listening to over and over again. It's him at his smartest, wittiest, and goofiest. Check it out now.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC AND SUPERB.......2000-12-11

      Guys and Gals

This is one of his original works and I have to say it is the best thing I have heard. The humour does not date for this CD as Carlin reflects on his life. On this CD we have the classic "Seven Words you cn't say on televison".

The best monlogue I have heard in awhile. Carlins comments on the black conscience is just as good.

A definite must to any one tha appreciates humour.

2 out of 5 stars not that good.......2000-09-15

George's classic work was probably better when it was created. Even though the topics he discusses are still valid, his style and delivery back then was just too wordy and slow for today. Comics like Jerry Sienfeld and Dana Carvy pack way more laughs per sentence. The only bit on this CD that comes close to current standards is "seven words...". And Carlin's more recent work is much faster paced and concentrated with humor. Buy this CD if you're a true Carlin fan and want to relive the old days, but buy his newer work if you want to laugh really hard.

5 out of 5 stars Carlin at his very best.......2000-06-23

The early Carlin is in a class all by himself. He could weave stories, make you relate to things, philosophize, and make you think. Oh yeah, he could also bust your gut, too! He takes life and looks at it through his unique viewing glasses and makes it funny. He also had a sense of freshness and wonder and an almost childlike approach at times. This combined with his ferocious wit produced some of the funniest comedy material ever. This best of... collection is a must have for any comedy fan and anyone who just plain likes to laugh.

      5 out of 5 stars Non-stop laughs.......1999-08-12

Creative, innovative, hilarious, and downright imaginitive. I couldn't stop laughing. I just wish "Toledo Window Box" was included on the double-cd as well, since one of my favorite Carlin bits of all time, Nursery Rhymes, is on "Toledo Window Box". In Nursery Rhymes, he talks about Little Jack Horner, The Seven Dwarves, and Old King Cole. Very funny stuff. I just wish it was included on "Classic Gold." Otherwise, "Classic Gold" is one album no Carlin fan should be without.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Two of These CDs are JUNK!.......2006-08-13

The National Lampoon name has been purchased by a group that has no sense of humor whatever but intends to market old properties and mix in new junk, betting you can't tell the difference until after you buy it. In this four CD set, CD #1, 'That's Not Funny, That's Sick" and CD #4, "Greatest Hits of the National Lampoon" are both excellent CDs put out by the original NL writers and actors (many of whom went on to Saturday Night Live: Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murray, and so on). BUY THEM SEPARATELY FOR A LOWER PRICE! The middle two are recent potboilers put out by the current owners to fool you into paying more. There is basically NOTHING funny (except perhaps 'Gay Alliance' which came from the National Lampoon Radio Hour,
