Album Description

America is a huge, diverse country with Yankee home cooking and Tex Mex cuisine. People ski on frozen Vermont mountains and surf the big waves in sun drenched California. One thing that binds it all together is TV. Television is American culture, a common thread that holds it all together on a nightly basis as we assemble around our living rooms to watch our favorite characters and shows.

Twenty years ago, TVT Records was born with its first release, Television's Greatest Hits. Now after having sold millions of its TV theme compilations around the world, America's #1 independent label for the past 4 years running is returning to its roots. In celebration of TVT's 20th Anniversary, it is releasing the ultimate TV collection, All Time Top 100 TV Themes, featuring themes drawn from all the original sources.

Hearing these theme songs consistenly evokes a strong emotional response, pointing to a time when everyone watched the same TV shows again and again. From I Love Lucy and Green Acres to Batman and The Monkees, to Welcome Back Kotter and M*A*S*H to Pee Wee's Playhouse and Twin Peaks to Friends and Six Feet Under, virtually anyone who grew up American watching television is sure to want a nostalgic piece of their shared cultural past.

3 out of 5 stars Tv theme songs.......2007-07-24

I bought this CD because my husband and I were singing TV themes songs to entertain our 3 and 4-year-old boys and I couldn't remember alot of the words. I don't forget them now- and neither do our boys. I keep the CD in my car and whenever the boys are with me, they each have their favorites that they request. It's great!!

2 out of 5 stars Shouldn't Have Been Squeezed on Two CDs.......2007-06-27

As much as I love that they showcased 100 great TV themes, that they are short versions offsets that. The themes for "Friends", "Melrose Place", and "Will and Grace" are over before you can blink an eye! I am particularly disappointed in "The Six Million Dollar Man" theme. It does not include the entire introduction with Steve and the crew communicating during Steve's initial liftoff. Instead, it begins with the crash sound. This collection should really be on 3 CDs, with each theme lengthened to their full potential.

1 out of 5 stars Huge Dissapointment.......2007-05-22

I was very dissapointed with the 2 dvd set I bought on 100 tv themes. they were originals allright, but the songs were just quick soundbytes. they werent full length. The cheers theme is over 2 1/2 minutes long. In this set its only a minute long. Hill st blues the same thing. Good times theme has been reduced to .44 seconds as was mary tyler moore, and many others. They should have made this a 3-4 cd set and included all the songs full length. I never would have bought this had I known they only included 25% of the song length. No one mentioned this on the reviews, I am the only one bringing up this major , major , shortcoming.

3 out of 5 stars television theme songs.......2007-05-17

For some reason, I thought that the tv theme songs would play in their entirety on these CDs. I did not realize that they were the shortened versions designed for tv, i.e., the abbreviated ones we all remember. That being said, the CDs are great for what they are - they are simply not what i had hoped.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun CD.......2007-05-11

My first consideration as to whether or not to buy this CD was to check if the themes from my three favorite shows were included...and there they were; M*A*S*H, Magnum and Moonlighting.

I wish some of the older classics were included such as Bonanza, 77 Sunset Strip, American Bandstand, Mickey Mouse Club and Howdy Doody Time.

The only problem is what would you delete in order to include them. Maybe Six Feet Under and The Banana Splits.

Thanks so much for the Honeymooners, Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy and the Lone Ranger!

This is a fun CD to play and sing along with in the car. Passengers enjoy playing Name That Tune!

For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Williams' Best Scores.......2007-07-26

This two disc CD does an excellent job of covering thirty years of Academy Award winner John Williams' greatest hits. It contains main title themes from films such as Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones, Home Alone, and of course the best theme of them all (in my opinion), Superman. It also contains two principal themes from the summer Olympics that NBC has used in its broadcasts since 1996 when John Williams composed the album "Summon the Heroes."

The sound quality is excellent and I've been extremely pleased with the product.

Bottom Line: Great CD with unforgettable hits. Buy it today if you're interested in it.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven is an insect compaired to this titian of composition........2007-07-18

In the past when I went to movies, I rarely thought about the music unless it was a popular song that was being played. I never realized how much the score had to do with the overall effect I felt while watching the show.

Once I started paying attention to the music and identifying different pieces that I enjoyed from different movies, I was suprized to realize that John Williams had composed many, many of them.

This CD contains possibably the greatest most timeless music I have heard. Sure, you, like my classical music loving boss, have probably already written off my opinion as foolish or ignorant. Honestly, I don't care.

I like Mozart, Bach and the rest, and they have their place, but their music doesn't move through me like Williams. While this collection is far from a box set of his work, all the most popular pieces are there: Raders March (Indiana Jones), Star Wars, Superman, Empire March (Darth Vader). None of the operas or preludes the other guys made up generate the experience I get from listening to the opening stanza of Superman.

While it is very hard to sing along to these pieces, if you have an office as I do, it makes great background music. Everyone who comes in is pleasently caught off guard and I enjoy watching them trying to place the various songs that are playing.

Even if you disagree that Williams is better than Wagner or Debussy, if you enjoy his music, you will love this CD. "These are the droids you are looking for."

4 out of 5 stars An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15

John Willams' film music is of such high quality it still holds up away from its source material.

Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".

Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".

The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.

5 out of 5 stars It's my second copy!.......2007-03-09

This is by far the best driving music! Especially on those long desert roads.Adventure lies ahead for you when the Indiana Jones soundtrack is blasting from the dashboard of the car. Kids Love this CD Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars I could listen to it a 100's and never get tired!.......2007-02-17

It's wonderfull, even my teenagers listen to it! I think we have played Jurassic Park and Hook 100 times.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic.......2006-02-20

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Come On Down!!.......2007-06-02

We used this CD for an event where Chuck Woolery was the keynote speaker. Great energy as people registered. A few were singing along. It's short but has all the classics.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for all game show fans & TV historians.......2007-05-13

This album has some of the best and most notable game show themes ever. Also worth buying is the companion album "The Best of TV Game and Quiz Show Themes", also available through Amazon. You can get them together for the best value.
Every track is the original recording. Overall, the sound quality is excellent. The album is well-mixed and well-mastered. I put this on my iPod, and didn't have to change the volume from track to track at all.
Most of the tracks are good choices. The GE College Bowl theme is a bit boring, and the clunker of the album is the theme for The Wizard of Odds. Cheesy as they are, I'm still glad they're included.
The album has some non-audio weaknesses, however. I wish as much care was taken with the album package. The album design is awful: the cover is terrible, and the inside is clumsily laid-out. The poorly-processed pictures used for most of the themes are not good choices for such a small format (one example is a far-away shot of the entire Match Game panel with host in an inch-high space). The album notes are not well-written and are slightly inaccurate (despite a meticulous list of dates, including which run was on which network). For instance, the notes do not indicate that the theme for The $25,000 Pyramid was a re-recording/re-edit of the theme for The $10,000 Pyramid (aka Tuning Up). (If you have the companion album, you'll see what I mean.) Also, the notes for the Match Game theme says that it featured "a comical moog [sic] synthesizer that seemed to squeal out each time a celebrity panelist name was mentioned". Anyone familiar with 70s music can tell the sound in question is an electric guitar with a wah pedal. And the notes for the Family Feud theme answers the obvious as to why fiddles were used, but never mentions that the music was originally a Showcase cue on The Price Is Right, and that the last few seconds are used, to this day, as the Grand Game cue on the same show.
In fact, it's a great addition to a playlist or mix that's oriented to a particular decade. Could you imagine a 70s mix without the Match Game or The Price Is Right themes, or an 80s mix without the Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune themes?
Since there are two albums (this one and the companion album I mentioned), I think it's time for a third, which should include some of the most recent game show hits and older, lesser-known shows.
Take the liner notes with a grain of salt, and definitely buy this album!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music and Arrangements.......2006-09-24

I listen to alot of different styles and types of music. I have a pretty large music library. This collection is one of my top 3 favorites. The Nelson Riddles don't come along very often. Due to their time frame most all of these tracks are only a little over two minutes in length. Every time I listen Nelson leaves me begging for more of each track.Even if you don't think that you will like this collection, take my word for it. YOU WILL......Lightfoot

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 2-fer of jazzy arrangements of TV themes.......2005-06-29

Though only four of these are Nelson originals ("Route 66 Theme" "The Untouchables" "Theme From Sam Benedict" and "New Naked City Theme"), the maestro puts his stamp on every track through his inventive, signature arrangements. Highlights include swinging charts for "The Alvin Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," Latin beats for "My Three Sons" and "The Lucy Show," the Bert Kaempfert styled "The Defenders Theme," and a fine light-jazz take on "Supercar." Two great albums, brought together on one extraordinary CD!

5 out of 5 stars Classic big band arrangements.......2004-06-17

Embodies all the excitement of the 60's TV shows. Nelson Riddle and his band of top musicians can still can stand along side todays TV and movie music creators with colour and richness of sound that is often assisted by digital enhancement today.
Top marks for releasing both LP albums on a single CD, my original 33rpm records can now be put into retirement.

5 out of 5 stars TUNE IN to GREAT TUNES!.......2002-04-17

Three cheers for EMI for finally putting these two albums out on CD for all to enjoy. Nelson Riddle's TV Theme versions were really hot when they were released on vinyl. Since then, an ocassional song has been released here and there, but here are both albums complete in pristine sound as well. This CD is worth its weight in gold for the rip-roarin' version Nelson and the gang lays down of The DICK VAN DYKE Theme, if for no other reason. There are of course about 20 other reasons including the themes from THE ALVIN SHOW, the LUCY Show, and THE BALLAD OF JED CLAMPETT. TV fans of all ages will delight in and enjoy this long overdue collection of some of TV's greatest theme songs, done by one of Hollywood's most fantastic arrangers.
Hope to see more of Nelson's albums represented in this fashion by the good people at EMI. Very nice packaging including all original liner notes as well. Great CD!

The latter-day success of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? should've come as little surprise; game shows have been a successful TV staple since the medium's beginnings. Most have relied on brief, catchy (or should we say kitschy?) theme songs to give them their instantly memorable musical identity. Devotees of exotica and American cultural kitsch will want to make note of this collection, which gathers some 20 themes from across the genre's, er, rich history, from Bert Kaempfert's Match Game mind taffy to the infectious early electro synth-pop bop of Perrey and Kingsley's The Joker's Wild to the trashy Dixieland-cum-vaudeville charms of Chuck Barris's The Gong Show. Fans and anthropologists, take note: all are the original themes in their complete, unexpurgated glory and feature a concise, illustrated annotation of both their origins and the genre's history. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You are a winner listening to this collection!.......2007-06-02

Thanks to GSN for packaging this collection of TV's popular game show themes in this CD! A few of these I remember growing up to including the original Match Game theme by Bert Kaempfert. There was also a version done by Billy Vaughn if I am correct. Other great themes including Password and To Tell The Truth from the 60's. This is a great compilation of some of the shows we remember from years gone by. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Another must-have for the game show fan.......2007-05-13

This album is the 2000 "sequel" to the 1998 release "Classic TV Game Show Themes". Get both (also available from Amazon), and read my review of the other album too.
The sound quality is as good as the other album. The tracks are more obscure, and some not as interesting, but it's good for the sake of completion.
Highlights:
The Match Game (A Swingin' Safari) (1962): I don't think this is a good game show theme, but it's good to listen to on its own. I believe this is the original recording, even though it sounds different from (better) what you'd hear from an actual episode, as stereo-sound television didn't happen until the 1980s.
Tattletales (1982 version), Blockbusters (1980), The Gong Show, The $10,000 Pyramid (Tuning Up) (1973), High Rollers (1986).
Lowlights:
Monopoly, The Diamond Head Game, Rock and Roll Jeopardy
The album design and writing is better, but still not great. The notes are more interesting. The photo selection is better; the audience ticket images are a good idea. However, it's mostly gray-on-gray, and the cover is still bad.
Conclusion: buy this album!

3 out of 5 stars "Original" versions? Close, but not quite.......2006-08-21

I am a stickler for authenticity. Although a few songs are clearly the "original versions as heard on TV" as advertised on the cover, at least as many are re-orchestrations. Maybe this wouldn't hold up as false advertising in a court of law, but they are not the actual versions of the music heard on the shows that aired. While close, but you can tell they are redone versions.

Password, Wheel of Fortune and Let's Make a Deal are the most obvious examples. In Password and LMAD, the musician "plays" with the melody more than they did on the actual show theme, although the musical instruments and arrangements are nearly identical to what I hear on GSN. If you compare LMAD on this CD with the one on the original GSN Game Show Theme CD, you'll see what I mean. The first CD had the "real" LMAD theme.

Wheel of Fortune (and $10K Pyramid, for that matter) is an excellent imitation, but for those of us who actually watched the show all the years Chuck and Susan (or Dick) were on, it doesn't sound quite right. Same arrangements, but not as forceful in the brass section as the original. Thankfully, there is some original work on this record, which partially redeems it.

Maybe I'm being picky, but much like the original Television's Greatest Hits CD, I feel like I've been duped when I get a bait and switch, even if it's only partial. I'd rather hear the flaws of the original than have a "perfect" imitation.

4 out of 5 stars Roll the dice! It's paradise!.......2005-07-30

This was the second volume of game show themes released by Varese Sarabande, in conjunction with Game Show Network. It's a real treasure trove for fans of game shows. Somehow, they managed to find the theme music for all these game shows, without the announcer's voiceover that you usually hear on the shows. That's pretty amazing, considering how old some of these shows are. Now, I'm not going to tell you that every one of these game shows had a great theme, because that's not true. But if you are a fan of old game shows, this CD is definitely nostalgic fun.
