Tom and Dick Smothers hit show-biz pay dirt by exploring the lighter side of brotherly competition in their musical comedy act. Combining substantial folk-singing skills with barbed comic repartee, the Smothers Brothers endeared themselves to "hip" crowds and mainstream audiences alike. That feat was a considerable accomplishment in the '60s, when the recordings that comprise this generous sampler were made. The tracks include such memorable numbers as "Pretoria," "Tom Dooley," "The Saga of John Henry," "Cabbage," "I Talk to the Trees," and, of course, "Mom Always Liked You Best." --Scott Schinder

Good Old Fashioned Humor.......2007-04-10
This CD takes me back to watching the Smothers Brothers on TV years ago. If you miss folk singers, comedy without four-letter words and TV variety shows, then you will enjoy this as much as I did!
Take it!.......2007-03-05
The Smothers Brothers issued ten MERCURY label records between 1961 and '68. With a catalog that large, a single-disc "best of" collection is almost certain to omit some great material due to time constraints. Mason Williams, who had a Top 40 hit in 1968 with "Classical Gas," wrote many of the Brother's funniest tunes, including one that was probably deemed too politically incorrect for this CD. It appeared on MOM ALWAYS LIKED YOU BEST, and was called "The Three Song." This was about a girl who yearned to be asked to dance-- the only drawback was she had THREE LEGS!
Not counting their PLAY IT STRAIGHT album, the Smothers have a catalog of almost 100 tracks. Only one-fifth of their recordings are here, and since this "best of" collection was issued in 1998, the chances are probably slim that a Volume Two or box set will appear anytime soon. That's a real shame, too.
Remastering on this RHINO product is excellent. The CD includes a foldout style booklet with an interesting three-page bio.

This is a great cd. These Smothers Brothers routines never get old. I had a history teacher in high school who played these to the class(on vinyl)back in the late sixties and I think they are as funny now as then. I am glad to see they are still available and would recommend them to young and old alike.
Sibling Revelry.......2007-01-25
This was everything I expected from the Smothers Brothers...absolutely hysterical. A real find.
As funny now as then.......2007-01-01
"Pumas! In cravasses!" (for example) still makes me laugh 40 years after hearing it for the first time. I wish I could say the same for Bill Cosby and Alan Sherman.

This collection gathers 19 of Sherman's humorous story-songs. The comic uses original lyrics and pre-existing tunes to poke fun at television shows and consumer items, to send-up the kids and generally riff on early and mid-'60s American pop culture. On tracks like "Pop Hates the Beatles" and "Crazy Downtown," his subject is the generation gap. "Al 'n Yetta" portrays a TV-dependent couple while "Lotsa Luck" describes the complicated hassles of dealing with faulty TVs and new-fangled tape recorders. Sherman assumed his audience had a little knowledge of history, too. On "Good Advice" and "You Went the Wrong Way, Old King Louie," he sings about inventors and French history, respectively. It's hard to imagine contemporary comedians working the historical beat. "One Hippopatami" is a delightfully goofy festival of wordplay that requires only a love of language and a tolerance for schmaltz. --Fred Cisterna

Allan Sherman in glorious STEREO!.......2007-02-18
Describing his singing voice, Allan Sherman accurately compared himself to an average guy warbling badly in the bathtub. Yet, as Steve Allen writes in the liner notes for "MY SON THE GREATEST," Allan's odd pipes were perfect for the strange parodies, puns and wordplays that were his stock-in-trade.
This reviewer owned six of Sherman's WARNER BROTHERS LPs way back then, and over 40 years later can still sing most of his lyrics (just ask me- I dare you!). Allan Sherman had that sort of effect on you - loving to laugh at his silly songs made folks want to commit them to memory. But, the one thing that wasn't available in the early 60's (as any avid fan will tell you), were STEREO mixes. For some reason, WARNER must have pressed ten times as many monaural copies, so we had to make do with those.
This RHINO records "Best of" has corrected that situation in marvelous fashion. Our favorite Allan Sherman tracks have never sounded so "fine" (a loaded word, when describing Allan's music!). Highlights here are the exuberant "Good Advice," the schlamozzel's theme song "Lotsa Luck," and "Schticks Of One And Half A Dozen Of The Other," which has more bad puns packed into it than any recording in history.
Oh no-- stand back! I feel a song coming on---
"On top of old Smokey, all covered with hair;
Of course I'm referrin'.... to Smokey da Bear..." (oy!)

Allen Sherman was a Genius!.......2007-02-17
I have been a fan of Allan Sherman almost my entire life. What a funny, funny guy! It is wonderful to have this CD with most of his very best work on it readily available to enjoy. I suppose some of the humor would not appeal to some very young listeners - sadly it is linked to a period of time that they will never relate to in our rapidly changing world. But for the most part, it is timeless, FUNNY, and delightfully silly stuff.
Muddah Faddah Kindly Disregard Dis Lettah!.......2007-01-31
Listening to Dr. Demento shows or singing songs around the campfire may have acquainted you with one or more of these gems. They are all Allan Sherman originals, and he delivers them in his own unequivecal way. My main reason for purchasing this CD was, as a Beatles memento-fiend, to grab the cut, "Pop Hates the Beatles", which, as you can imagine, tells of the agony of the American father anticipating the British invasion (Parents of America,/It's time to do it again, folks./When they come back, here's how we'll begin,/We'll throw 'em in Boston harbor./But please, before we toss 'em all in,/Let's take 'em to a barber). But
in doing so, I've added a number of childhood favorites to my collection, especially the perennial, "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah", the chronicle of a youngster fearful of camp who decides camp isn't so bad by the time the letter is done. This was our family anthem as we set out camping each summer, one that is sure to serve the same function for other families. The songs all are based on well-known, often classical melodies, with Mr. Sherman's lyrics. The humor ranges from silly to hilarious. Some, like the Beatles' number, are dated; some, like "Hello Muddah", are timeless.
Love this CD!!!!.......2007-01-25

Just like old times.......2007-07-10
One of the happiest memories I have from my childhood, was when the whole family was still together, we just moved into a new house with a brand new Montgomery & Ward 8-track player with a record player on top. In the evenings, we would play our "The Best of Bill Cosby" record and laugh like we were insane. Comedy is much different now... still funny... some VERY funny, but nothing seems as funny as what I remember from that record about playing buck-buck, stories of Old Wierd Harold, etc... After decades of not having that record, I found it online and bought it for my mother. We played it and it and for just a litle while we were all back in the late 70's / early 80's laughing like we were insane, even though we already knew every word before he even said it. Good times.
Bill Cosby.......2007-05-13
I loved this as a kid growing up and a lot of people never heard the Noah's ark skit. I think its a scream. I would recamend it to anyone who loves to laugh out loud.
Good, clean fun!.......2007-03-23
I remember listening to this album with my brother when we were little; it made us crack up. Now, after hearing it for the first time in over 20 years, it still cracks me up! I would recommend this cd for anyone looking for a really good laugh!
Bill Cosby.......2007-01-09
I first heard this years ago and never forgot the conversation between Noah and God. This is a must have for Cosby fans!!!
Don't miss this one!.......2007-01-04
I remember hearing this album back when I was young. 30 years later it is still hilarious and my children love it. Good clean humor, which is is short supply these days.

Just What the Doctor Ordered........2004-04-23
Several years ago there used to be an affiliate of the now-defunked children's radio group known as Radio Ahhs! (Radio Ahhs! no longer exists because of the Walt Disney Company). Anyway, the local affiliate in the St. Louis area used to play some of the coolest music around. Just about everyone I knew from my younger siblings to high school students and our parents listened to the station from time to time because of the original and highly entertaining music. Some of the songs I remember hearing from those times are on this album and I know now that a lot of the music they played originated from Dr. Demento. Some of my favorites on the album include:
"Yoda"
"Fish Heads"
"Bulbuous Bouffant"
"Hellow Mudduh, Hello Fadduh (A Letter From Camp)"
"Star Trekkin'"
"Ti Kwan Leep/Boot to the Head"
"Marvin, I Love You"
"They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!"
"Bulbous Bouffant" and "Ti Kwan Leep/Boot to the Head" aren't really songs but are comedy sketches that are just as entertaining as anything done by Monty Python. "Fish Heads" is one of the songs I remember from Radio Ahhs! and in reading the liner notes that are included with the disc, I found out that Bill Muny from LOST IN SPACE fame is one of the two members of the group that sings "Fish Heads". Dr. Demento is largely responsible for Wierd Al Yankovic even having a career, but it's nice to see that on this album the only song by Wierd Al is "Yoda". However, Wierd Al also wrote the introduction to the liner booklet. "The Smoke Off" by Shel Silverstein is probably the most offensive song on the cd because of the cursing and the subject matter (it's about a pot smoking competition). There are a couple other tunes that verge on the edge of vulgarity, but "The Smoke Off" is really the only one that crosses the line.
Overall, this is a good album for anyone looking for some truly original music to own. It's also a good way to introduce people to dementia music and the crazy world of Dr. Demento.
Marvin, I LOVE you!.......2001-05-27
This is a very nice collection of some of Dr. Demento's best hits on his radio show. I actually have many, many other Dr. Demento albums and so when I bought this most of them were repeats for me, but it was all worth it for the song "Marvin, I Love You" by Marvin the Paranoid Android, which makes its first appearance on CD ever right here! This is a very sweet song and listening to it will make you almost want to cry for the poor robot. It's also nice to hear Dr. Demento himself getting in on the act in his rendition of "Shaving Cream." "Posioning Pigeons..." is one of Tom Lehrer's best, I just love his voice! "Bulbous Bouffant" and "Ti Kwan Leep" have musical qualities to them, but they're more comedy sketches than songs. "Fish Heads", "Hello Muddah...", and "They're Coming..." are great classics. I'm also glad that Dr. D. decided to only put one Weird Al song ("Yoda") on here as well, because he usually tends to overdo his compiliation albums with too many Al songs. I mean, Al's a great singer (I have all his ALbums), but leave room for other talented people! Be warned though, some songs are mildly offensive. Other than the obvious ("Posioning Pigeons...", "My Dead Dog Rover", and "Dead Puppies") one of the tracks features Shel Silverstein (and yes, I mean that late, great children's author) using many swear words (including the "f" word, but that one is bleeped out), "Shaving Cream" just fools you into thinking it's going to cuss, and "The Scotsman" jokes about what ISN'T present underneath those kilts. And finally, if you plan on collecting ALL of the other Demento albums (on CD's), then you should know that the only ones that aren't repeats are: "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow", "Nanook Rubs It", "Marvin, I Love You", "The Smoke Off", and this special version of "Shaving Cream." But, if you're like me, then it's still worth it.
Laughter is indeed the best medicine.......2001-05-13
Most of the songs on this compilation I have on the three retrospective collections that Rhino put out in 1991,1995,& 2000 respectively-I'm glad that Frank Zappa's "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" & Shel Silverstein's "Smoke Off" are included on this disc-They are classic bits-The weakest track on this collection:Dr.Demento's desecration of "Shaving Cream"-Otherwise,I recommend it for lovers of novelty music everywhere.
Life, don't talk to me about life!.......2001-03-05
Is this where a fine English actor (Stephen Moore) should end - not deceased but alive and healthy as far as I know. As there are probably a few people who are wondering what the heck I am wittering on about, he is the voice of Marvin The Paranoid Android who has managed to get on to this collection - and not the best Marvin song either on the two singles I know about.
As to the album itself - get the anniversary editions - far more warped (demented), and there are only two or three extra tracks that are not on these, so myself, I would not buy this, however it looks like a great start for anyone who may be in need a decent fix of brain surgery from the Doctor - it is only your mind you have to lose!!
Silly Songs for Kids and their Parents.......2001-02-20
We absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Demento!! This compilation is A plus. I used to listen to Dr. Demento in high school on a local Los Angeles radio station on Sunday nights, I never missed it. We bought this and other Dr. Demento collections for our 5 yr. old (who has an amazingly black sense of humor) and we put it on and clean the house and dance and sing the songs. We especially love the sick, twisted humor of "Hamster Love", "THe Tennessee Birdwalk" and "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road". Our absolute favorite is "Bulbous Bouffant" by the Vestibules, our son actually took the CD to his teacher: after writing down the wordsin the song, she used them for a spelling test!!! (he's in a highly gifted program) SHe thought it was a HOOT!!!!! An absolute MUST to cheer you and put you in a good mood, if you're life is as hectic and stressed as mine is with 2 small kids. Just don't tell your parents, they might not approve!!!!!!!!

If you haven't yet fallen victim to Oklahoma's favorite ass-whuppin' shock jock, go ahead and let Roy D. Mercer beat you like cornbread batter this time around. Album volume 7 is a great place to start, since it compiles some of Brent Douglas and Phil Stone's funniest sketches of outrageous kvetches. The accusations hurled in these prank calls--a homespun alternative to the obscenities of The Jerky Boys--are classic Roy D., terrorizing a range of unsuspecting folk, from a cemetery custodian, bank clerk, and bowling alley owner to a shoe salesman (ordered to pay the psychiatric bills occasioned by selling girls' shoes to little "Joey Mercer"). With minimal sound effects (including some impressively realistic borborygmi suffered from eating "bad apples"), ol' Roy pursues his victims like Ahab after Moby. The only letdowns are in the anticlimactic candid-camera moments explaining how the callees (surprisingly few of whom have managed to cut Roy off entirely by then) have been set up by their friends. After which, you can be sure, the traitors are going to face some intense ass-whuppin' of their own. Not recommended for those recovering from surgery: there's too high a risk for popping your stitches. --Tom May

Grave Robbers!!.......2006-09-17
Search for and buy "The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean" CD. John Bean was the guy who did this first. His tapes were passed around by people for years and that's how he became so well known. This 'Roy D. Mercer' thing is a rip-off of John Bean who died in 1984 of cancer at the age of 33. 'Roy D. Mercer' is stealing John Bean's stuff. He imitates Bean's voice and steals the words and expressions he was famous for. You can patronize this theft or you can support the family of the real deal. John's stuff is better anyway.
Roy D. is a rip off.......2005-11-07
They got this off of a guy from Knoxville who did this in the early 80's. Go and hear the real stuff. Leroy Mercer, aka John Bean, is the real deal, not these theives.
this isn't even worth one star..........2005-07-01
Roy D. Mercer is a poor imitation of a really funny guy who used the name Leroy Mercer (see any similarities there?) for his prank calls. If you want to know the real story, do a search for Leroy Mercer aka John Bean. Unfortunately there is also another jerk imitating Johnny and he calls himself "Lee Roy Mercer". These men should be ashamed of themselves
HYSTERICAL!.......2005-02-11
Absolutely the most hilarious thing you could ever hear. I can listen to this over and over. I am a native oklahoman currently in Tulsa, OK and I have listened to Phil and Brent for years on KMOD doing ROY D MERCER. It's a running joke around my office and we are always imitating him! I totally recommend any of his CD's to everyone. I bet $100 you won't be able to keep a straight face! KEEP ON WHOOPIN @$$ ROY D!
If you can't laugh at Roy D.Mercer, get a new funny bone...!.......2004-10-07
Roy D. Mercer is the "down home" version of the Jerky Boys, the brainchild of Oklahoma DJs Phil and Brent. He is the radio version of getting Punk'd by Ashton Kutcher, that is if Ashton had a Southern accent. Through nearly a dozen CDs he has caught many an unsuspecting caller with a threat of an "ass-whoopin'", mainly thanks to the caller's friends/family/co-workers who set up the calls to see if they can get them (the intended victim) riled up.
"Greatest Fits" takes some of the best pranks from the first 6 volumes of the "How Big a Boy Are Ya?" series and combines them into one sweet package for the consumate Mercer fan and/or neophyte to enjoy.
Truly the best of the bunch has to be "Bad Apples" where Roy calls a grocer and asks to see if he can get a delivery of certain items due to the fact that he ate a few apples that have left him with a bad case of diarrhea (the sound effects are hilarious enough that even I was left in the floor, as Roy says during the skit, "doubled up with a gut-ache" from laughing so hard). Also great is "Dead Trees" where Roy calls a woman requesting compensation for several trees that died thanks to a herbicide advertised in a newsletter that the woman suggested. But when Roy threatens her with the customary "ass-whuppin", she turns the tables and dares HIM to bring it!
My personal favorite is "Horse Feed", where Roy calls a woman requesting payment over cancelled horse riding groups after one of the horses has a little problem (or should I say a BIG problem)after eating the horse feed from her shop, a fact the shop owner finds hilarious, laughing through the entire phone call. The clincher comes when Roy tells the woman that his wife, Sharon Jean, is "gonna kick [her]ass so hard [she'll]have to clear her throat to fart".
Whether you are a fan of the HBaBAY? series or just getting started in, you definitely need to make room for Greatest Fits into your collection...

I have always liked olde time radio broadcasts and like Allan Sherman; Stan Freeburg is one of the masters in the field.
"Stan Freberg Here...".......2003-12-31
this CD contains 21 hilarious singles from Stan Freberg, the original music satirist decades before "Weird Al" came along. technically a satirist, Freberg didn't parody pop songs like Weird Al...Freberg tore them apart!! Called a hater of rock music by the '50s generation, Freberg nonetheless poked fun at what he seen as mediocre music being passed off as brilliant pieces of music. however, it all started for him musically with "John and Marsha", a satire on soap operas, in 1951. prior to this, Freberg was half of the puppet show "Time for Beany" with voice legend Daws Butler, who also played a huge part in Freberg's recording career too. Freberg was "Cecil" and "Dishonest John" while Butler was "Beany" and "Captain Huffenpuff". This show ran from 1949-1954. but...prior to that puppet show, Freberg was a teenage voice actor on Warner Brothers cartoons along side Mel Blanc. Freberg is the one who uttered the immortal phrase: "which way did he go, George? which way did he go?" in several cartoons spoofing "Of Mice and Men" characters Lenny and George.but, getting back to this CD. Freberg's recording career started with "john and marsha" in which Stan simply says the two people's names over and over in different emotions. somehow it's funny! don't ask me to over-analyze it! Freberg's stock in trade was satire of course. His wicked take on Johnny Ray on the song "Try" (a parody on Johnny's song, "Cry") is unreal! The Stan Freberg/Daws Butler/June Foray classics are here, too: "St. George and the Dragonet", "Little Blue Riding Hood", and "Christmas Dragnet". On "Heartbreak Hotel" we hear Freberg tackle Elvis and fight with the echo-chamber. On "Yellow Rose of Texas" Freberg delivers a southern dialogue...and is constantly bickering with the snare drummer. "C'est Ci Bon" is hilarious too. His mis-understood single, "Green Christmas", features Daws Butler and Marvin Miller as Bob Cratchit and Crass. Freberg is Scrooge of the advertising world. some critics said that Freberg was nuts for writing and recording a single that roasted his "other job" (Freberg wrote and produced comedy commercials for TV and radio in addition to his recording career and cartoon work). Country singers Ferlin Huskey and Jean Sheppard had a pop hit, "A Dear John Letter", but in Freberg's hands it became "A Dear John and Marsha Letter". His hatred for R&B is showcased on "Sh-Boom". Lawrence Welk doesn't escape Freberg neither and here we have the classic "Wun'nerful, Wun'nerful" which on the original '45 RPM single it was broken into Side Uh-One and Side Uh-Two. Stan Freberg remained a prominent figure in advertising well into the late '80s. In 1990 he started a 5 minute radio commentary called "Stan Freberg Here" that ran until 1998. Old-Time radio also used Freberg's famed voice as host of "When Radio Was" from 1991-1999, still being heard in countless re-runs everynight on AM radio. Freberg's recent project was supplying the voice to that screetching oddball Pete Puma in a cameo role in the recent Looney Tunes movie.
The Right Intro To Stan "The Man" Freberg.......2001-09-20
Stanley Victor Freberg's brilliance was summerized by Stephen Holden, music critic of the NY Times, who noted that Freberg's parodies were more than just of passing fads, but were superb self-contained radio comedies. The twenty-one tracks on this compilation serve up some of the best of his work during the 1950s.
Born in 1926 as the son of Baptist minister Victor Freberg, Stan first entered show business with his uncle, Raymond Freberg, whose stage act was as Conray the Magician. "Radio was my first library," Freberg has said, as he grew up during the audio medium's golden age and thus became enamored of the effect sound created. After graduation from Alhambra High School, Stan hopped a bus to Hollywood and set up a voice audition with Warner Brothers in 1944. Termite Terrace's legendary directors, Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson, and Isadore "Friz" Freleng hired Freberg on the spot and he started work alongside the equally legendary Mel Blanc.
Soon Stan was branching out more and more, doing cartoon voice work for the majority of the studios as well as a steady diet of work on radio. The Army then beckoned, and after his discharge in 1947 he was contacted by ex-Warners director Bob Clampett, for a puppet TV series he was developing. This became "Beany and Cecil" and became an all-time TV classic.
Then in 1951 he released "John and Marsha," a two-word satire of soap operas that became an instant classic. His career in musical satire thus launched, he compiled more such satires.
Among his best are his "Dragnet" parodies. In "St. George an the Dragonet" Freberg uses June Foray as a near-devoured maiden and Daws Butler (with whom he'd worked during "Beany & Cecil") as the dragon (voiced as a typical Dragnet heavy) and also the skipper of the woods' homicide division.
On "Little Blue Riding Hood" Freberg takes on the famed fairy tale as Sgt. Wednesday, with Little Blue and her grandma running a "goodies" ring - his use of the term "goodies" makes the listener genuinely take the term as police jargon for illicit substances.
Capitol made Freberg do one more Dragnet parody, the brilliant two-parter "Yulenet." Sgt. Wednesday and his partner, Frank Jones, interrogate Grudge, a non-believer in Santa Claus (as well as a non-believer in the Easter Bunny or Columbus - or Cleveland or Cincinatti, though he can't make up his mind about Toledo) who leaves Frank quite shaken and Joe determined to prove Santa's bona-fides.
The greatest strength of Freberg's Dragnet parodies is their attention to the show's detail - Daws Butler, who co-wrote "Yulenet," voices Frank, and perfectly captures the mannerisms Ben Alexander imbued in the character in his time on the real "Dragnet," while Freberg not only parodies the monaural delivery of Jack Webb, he also rattles off believable spoofs of the arcane numerical jargon used by police in reporting crimes - most brilliantly at the track's beginning. "Yulenet's" other enduring quality is its good-natured approach - the ending is believably happy, so much so that comes across as a legitimate "Dragnet" episode rather than just a parody. The real Sgt. Friday couldn't have done it better himself.
Music parodies continued for Freberg, and his funniest was "Banana Boat," his savaging of the embarassing Harry Belafonte hit "Day-O." Freberg exaggerates the song's absurd title and ludicrous lyrics, and the foolishness of the whole enterprise is displayed by the interruptions of Peter Leeds, a friend of Stan's from his radio days, who plays a too-hip bongo player who forces Stan to leave the studio repeatedly to sing.
"Banana Boat" was Leeds' third track with Stan - the first was Stan's take-off on "Great Pretender," followed by Freberg's "skiffle band" parody, a send-up of Lonnie Donegan's "Rock Island Line" and the common folk song trait of backgrounding the song's story more than necessary before going into the actual number.
The calypso form of "Day O" is then used in one of Freberg's tracks that is among his funniest and at the same time one of his most serious. "Tele-Vee-Shun" rips into circa-1957 television and with its terrific jokes and puns makes a serious point about the downside of the medium. There is a caustic nature to this parody that is used to greater effect on his controversial 1958 skewering of Christmas commercialization, "Green Chri$tma$," qualities reflecting his birth as a Baptist minister's son.
While by no means a complete compilation of Freberg's work, this CD is the right place to start in appreciating his work.
Stan Freberg-In A Class By Himself.......2000-11-06
Stan Freberg is the best satirist of all time-His thought provoking sketches & song parodies have made him a hit throughout the English speaking world-This CD is nothing short of spectacular-My favorite cuts are "St.George & The Dragonet","John & Marsha",& "Green Christmas"-For those who are unfamiliar with Freberg's work, this CD is a great place to start.
Stan Freberg is almost as funny as he thinks he is.......2000-05-28
This is a reissue of the excellent Capitol Collectors Series CD from a decade ago. Kudos to Collectables for bringing this back. Stan Freberg can be described as the Weird Al Yankovic of the 50's and 60's. Of course, the man is much more than just a recording artist, but these comedy sketches and parodies are classics and these recordings form a large part of Freberg's legacy. The most dated and least funny tracks on this CD are still funny. The most funny are hysterical. The Dragnet skits never get old, and send ups of Mitch Miller, Les Paul/Mary Ford and the Lawrence Welk TV show are dead on and fall down funny. Green Christmas is in a category all by itself and should be a Yuletide tradition for everyone. This is a great compilation and contains most of his best known work. Those of you who are looking for The Old Payola Roll Blues (perhaps the funniest thing he ever did), Point of Order and The Lone Psychiatrist should veer toward the Tip Of The Freberg box set. But if you're just wanting an introduction to this comic genius, this is the best starting place.

If you love Rodney, you'll at least like this. Recorded live, and probably a while ago. One long track with lots of his "no respect" material, then 8 or so tracks of longer (1-5 minute) bits. Some of the longer bits are very funny and you get a good sense of what it was like to see Rodney in person.

EXPLICIT AND FUNNY!!!!.......2003-10-10
This is a hilarious cd it is very explicit but it is funny this is a legend and he is so funny and I would truly reccommend this cd to anyone who likes Redd Foxx he started out at the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York...... This cd is so funny I listen to it all of the time it is explicit so don't listen to it in front of the kids he talks about a lot of things.... But all of the things that he says makes a whole lot of sense!!!!
King of Party Humor.......2001-08-21
Before Pryor, Eddie, Martin, Chris Tucker and Chris Rock, there was Redd Foxx. Redd is the the author and originator of Party Humor. He's the true "King of Comedy."
Great entry point for Old-School Comedy.......2001-06-04
This isn't your parents's Sanford & Son Redd Foxx! This disc presents a ton of really good routines and one-liners from the man who started "blue" comedy. Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce both come out of this man, and it shows fairly well on this disc. It's not as nasty or blue as some of his other records, but it does show Foxx at the top of his form telling stories ("Letter To A Wife" is incredible, even by today's standards) and joke after joke after joke. The man is an encyclopedia of dirty jokes, and balances his whole act with a strong grip on class, which, considering some of the content, is genius unto itself.
You can find dirtier Foxx, but this collection is a great break-in point for any other purchases you might consider. If you like this one, you'll dig the other stuff. If you don't, lean off it all. This is a great collection of material and scope of Foxx's work.
the godfather of comedy.......1999-10-09
this man could tell stories.he could tell jokes and could keep people in the palm of his hands.this man's disc has legend written all over it.very funny straight up.

Sure, you'll laugh at the zany sound effects (gunshots, auto horns, and sounds that can only be described as semiflatulent) and delightfully loopy monologues from the great Doodles Weaver (his absurd horse-race call on "The William Tell Overture" is classic). But Jones and his City Slickers display impressive musical chops as well. Just how easy can it be to play "Dance of the Hours" on a cowbell, anyway? "Der Fuehrer's Face" has huge historic interest, but the faux earnestness of the vocal is just as funny today as when it was recorded. An icon of irreverence, Jones turns the bland tunes of the day into infectious outbursts of madcap craziness. --Heidi MacDonald
Customer Reviews:
Great nostalgia.......2006-08-23
My Dad shared this one with me and now I am enjoying sharing it with my son. A wonderfully esoteric piece of music history.
You always hurt (*CRACK-BOOM* EGAH!) the one you love.......2006-07-28
Who else could gargle his way through the William Tell Overture, I ask you, than Spike Jones? This CD was first my grandmother's, then my mother's and now it's mine, and let me tell you, I am very proud to be in this hereditary line of musical insanity (strange as its existance is)! This is amazing stuff-HILARIOUS, innovative, imaginative (to say the least!), and gloriously over-the-top. I promise you, dear readers, my child will be humming Dance of the Hours before they know how to read, car-horns and all!
Humorous big band music from the 40's.......2005-04-18
Another reviewer says Spike Jones was like the Robin Williams of the 1940's. Good analogy. We would add, like Weird Al Yankovic too. Like Weird Al is, this was a really TALENTED band of their era that could play anything with great skill, and goofy humor. This is the best best-of for a good price. [And, if you REALLY love these samples, then opt for the 4-disk "Strictly For Music Lover's" collection instead. It has all these hits, plus many more gems.]
This would probably be the one to get.......2002-01-01
All of the well-known Jones numbers, BUT! If you don't get Spike's absurdist operatic parody (via hillbilly parody) "Pal-Yat-Chee" (on another disc) you don't yet have everything you need!
Also, for a whole nother dimension of fun, check out the VHS videos from Spike's 1950s TV show!
Absolutely hilarious..........2001-11-03
Spike Jones and the City Slickers were among the most accomplished musicians ever to fall all over the stage. Whatever kind of music you love, from jazz to opera, this insanity will tickle your funny bone. The William Tell overture in Spike Jones'
hands ranks as one of the five funniest skits I've ever heard, Abbott and Costello's `Who's On First?' included... and that is praise of the highest kind. Is good stuff! I also saw the Mickey Katz album here on Amazon. If I remember correctly, Katz was Joel Grey's father, a singer with an insane tenor voice, and an incredibly accomplished clarinet player... along with being a Spike Jones' alumnus. Is also good stuff!

Customer Reviews:
Rickey is Too Much!.......2004-11-18
This album is just one of the great prank c.d.'s Rickey's made.
The tracks that aren't listed are the ones I didn't find amusing.
02. Sweet Milk (10/10) - The first prank. Granny calls Krogers and asked for some sweet milk every other, other question, it's hilarious.
05. My Toes Fell Off (9/10) - Too much! Granny calls the hospital and tells the nurses that two of her toes fell off, it's really funny.
06. Got Cheese? (10/10) - What's really funny about this prank is half of the time, he's on hold singing and cussin', real funny. Then tells the man that sister Cora's bowel's locked up and passed away and needs cheese that won't lock up the church member's. Very funny!
07. Monroe's Momma (9/10) - An argument prank, one of my favorites. Granny calls this guys mom and stirs her up and she starts cussin' and carrying on. Then Granny says she's gonna do a pray-by. She's gonna drive by her house and throw some little green Bibles on her porch. Really funny.
08. My Baby's Daddy (09/10) - What's good about this one is another comedian, "Small Fry" is featured on this prank. They call some chinese guy and she starts carryin' on about why you leave my mommy? It's real good.
09. Churches Chicken (9/10) - The first prank I ever heard from Rickey. Granny calls and asks about what time is the service and sunday school. The main prank.
The rest I don't really listen to, but 13. Remember Me Ballin, a medley by Granny is really funny.
