Editorial Reviews
Not Pryor's best, but it's still better than most standups' masterpieces. Profane and confessional as always, Are You Serious??? lingers on two key events in the comedian's life: his childhood in a Peoria whorehouse and a brief, aborted stint in the U.S. Army. Both are fertile comedic soil, and while the routines don't quite hit the manic heights Pryor's capable of, they are genuinely funny and provocative. His admiration for the childhood yarns of Bill Cosby is evident here, but Pryor's bits are more astringent. For fans, this disc is a worthy addition to Pryor's body of work. And everyone should hear his impression of being born at least once. It's utterly unique and shows why Pryor has attained "comedy genius" status. --Michael Gerber

Everybody's got to start somewhere..........2000-12-03
In this outing, he relies more on long-winded anecdotes (played fairly straight), more slightly amusing than drop-dead hilarious, but my favourite bit is the 'Silk-on-silk healer', and especially 'Leroy.'
I'd only recommend this album to completists rather than casual fans, but it still fits in nicely as a companion piece to his first three albums and the "Live & Smokin" video. By the time this was recorded, the best Richard Pryor material had yet to arrive.

Not exactly a highlights disc, this, but a judiciously pruned and fully coherent presentation of a masterpiece that's arguably too verbose for its own good. All the hits are intact: Baron Ochs's rantings, the slithering presentation of the Rose, the velveteen final trio, and, of course, those indestructible waltzes. A little less of the drawn-out opening scene plus the inclusion of the extraordinary Act 3 Prelude would have made this splendid disc utterly perfect. Perhaps one loses the guttural edge and local color of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's German when rendered in the King's English, but the wonderful cast projects every word without sacrificing Strauss's liquid legato. David Parry plays up the composer's frothy textures, keeping his strings away from the unlimited schlag bar. Chandos supplies an excellent synopsis together with full English texts. In sum, the ultimate Rosenkavalier starter's kit, after which you'll want to try the legendary Karajan recording or Erich Kleiber's incandescent account. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:
