it's difficult to navigate through the piles and piles of releases Brian Jones left behind, and separate the borderline unlistenable repetitive, abrasive work-outs and the gorgeous pieces full of mystique and daring compositional ideas. this collection contains the second kind of Muslimgauze in copious amounts.

strange electronic meditations on Middle Eastern tunning and rhythm, almost catchy short beat numbers that might fit in a truly adventurous house-set, and that 13 minute long 2nd track... what a monster! it is one of the wickedest tracks EVER - thunderous echoes, half hidden, half revealed beats magically woven in layers of distortion and noise, and a lone flute riding above it all like a sea-gull in a stormy sky, flying over tumultous waves.... truly breath-taking.

Big band jazz funk!.......2002-10-04

This is a great CD to have if you love funky jazz big band stuff. Unfortunately in my view it doesn't contain their best material. Theres no sign of The Catfish from their 1975 Onkel Po LP and no Wild Chick or GreenWitch from their Wait A Minute LP from 1973..

real pity that...

Anyway what we have here is a cross section of the moodier pieces and funky pieces which doesn't quite come off but when you see what else is available by this band on CD you just gotta be grateful for even a slither of the funky stuff.

highlights for me are the tracks from the Hip Walk LP from 76 where they persued a smoother kind of sound which still sounds unsurpassed in terms opf sound quality and colour.. Hip Walk, Butterfly and Jive Samba are just simply wonderful tracks amongst the best that 70s fusion had to offer.

The funkiest track on here is with out a doubt Corean Chick which sounds nothing like Chick Corea funnily enough but is hellishly funky with some nice fender rhodes comping and insidious moog basslines... (now if they'd only included the unbelievably funky Catfish..!)

Probably the best track on here is the 15 minute epic My Kind of Sunshine which is really a soul jazz classic. Dieter Reiths organ lines are just wonderful, some really epic twists and turns as the beats change from funky to swing back to funky and his playing goes from funk into hard bop effortlessly..

Anyway recommended as a primer (it loses one star becuase of the lack of other essential material which should have been included) .. but you really got a check out those early 70s LPs if you can but they seem to go for a lot of money on auction sites these days.

Superlative brass arrangements.......2000-03-22

It is unfortunate that so little of Peter Herbolzheimer is known in this country (or so it seems). I first heard his music less than two years ago and was totally knocked out by his band's superlative playing.

This CD is somewhat of a 1970's "greatest hits" compilation containing live and studio tracks. The music is thoroughly '70's hip and still sounds great today. Some of the music is absolutely stunning, such as "Neosho" with its awesome brass arranging and "The Mixolydian Highlander" with its almost Gregorian fervor.

The CD is top quality with several photographs, detailed tune and personnel descriptions and liner notes in both German and English.

This CD is a fine prelude to Herbolzheimer's Marvelous 1997 "Colors of a Band," which sadly, is apparently no longer available.

If inventive, cutting-edge big band jazz is your bag, you can't go wrong here.

Finally some international recognition.......2006-03-08

When Junkie XL came onto the music scene with 'Saturday Teenage Kicks' we in Holland knew we had something special. The two-man team of Tom Holkenborg and Rudeboy had already shown us what they could do in the decade before. Tom was a member of the bands Weekend at Waikiki and the industrial group Nerve. Rudeboy of course was the frontman of the now legendary Urban Dance Squad, that's right, the band Rage vs the Machine blatantly ripped off making them the worlds most unoriginal band.

Brilliant live shows made them a wanted guest at festivals and later with the Little Less Conversation commercial (with Elvis) more recognition came, also in computer games.

Rudeboy now has left Junkie XL and this album is their last work together, a great fin-de-siecle piece of music.

This CD does not have great songs like 'Billy Club' or 'Saturday Teenage Kicks' but the overall quality is outstanding. You almost feel like you are at their show. 'Check Your Basic Groove' is carried by a funky bassline and Rudeboy's shouts to awaken us all. 'Synasthesia' is a good piece of big beats with another melodic bassline. The song changed dramatically after about 3,5 minutes when it slowly drifts into a symphonic, almost new age like, piece. Strings, horns have a solo before they are mixed into the big beats again.

'Zerotonine' was the first single and is carried by little pieces of violin and Rudeboy's raps, like he also does on 'Legion' (with acoustic guitar)

And it goes on, there is not a bad track on the CD and it's a very worthy succesor to "Saturday Teenage Kicks".

If only there were more people as inventive as Junkie XL...

Love Like Awesome.......2005-05-31

Rock is the place to be!

This album is fantastic... I can't get enough! This was the first JXL CD I bought (a while ago), after hearing somebody tried to palm off some Junkie XL tracks and some Lunatic Calm tracks, as a new Prodigy CD. Now I loved Prodigy, so thought I'd check these guys out...

GREAT idea. It's quite different to prodigy, but damn awesome, groovy and VERY danceable. My favourite track is Love Like Razorblade, and Future in Computer Hell is a close second, but it's all good!

Lunatic Calm is also a worthwhile listen. They had that song Leave you Far Behind (I wanna take you on a rollercoaster) that has been on about 8 movie soundtracks).

But yeah, check these guys out... be warned though, their latest offering is very poppy, and very different to this genius!

Electro-Explosion.......2005-05-01

I first heard "Action Radius" on Need for Speed Underground and it blew me away. XL's use of rock/punk elements spliced with Big-Beat and hard Techno grooves are amazing. Nothing I have heard in recent months comes close. In a world filled with Ushers, Britneys and J.Lo's, it is delicously refreshing to find an album like this. Look out for the "The power of big slacks," a symphonic master piece swirling with emotion! A big highlight!
Buy it, blast it, enjoy it! This album rocks!

Boomin' Big Beats.......2004-03-14

Definitely a mix of a lot of other genres but done very well. I haven't run across anyone who's heard it that didn't like at least some of the CD. I would put this on the top of my "getting-out-of-the-shower-and-going-out" list.

Zero to Nine, I'm in line, I feel fine........2003-11-26

Another great album fron Junkie XL, who once again partners with the Silver Surfing Rudeboy AKA Ronin to produce a second masterpiece of electronic musical artistry that really has to be listed in depth to be grasped. Powerful and fast-paced tracks like "Check your Basic Groove" and "Power of Big Slacks" keep you going, and the entire album sort of unfolds as one or two massive over-tracks as all the songs are made to flow into one another. The album has a few really long instrumental pieces("Power of Big Slacks (reprise)" comes to mind, at 11 minutes or so), but Junkie XL's talent is such that he/they can in fact manage to keep an 11-minute-long instrumental interesting. Songs such as "Zerotonine" and "Next Plateau" defy classification, spanning several genres simultaneously and producing results unlike anything else.

In conclusion, another must-have work by this artist whose future is still very, very bright.

Eventhough some of the music in this cd is quite pleasing to one's ear...for me this simply added to my collection of Paul Mauriat most treasured musics.I kept 5 of them(audio cassettes) some date back to 60's or 70's and others which seems came from nowhere as they were given to me by a tourist friends.I have Paul Mauriat 'Bresil' and the arrangement of'The Beattles'by Paul Mauriat(all cassettes) as well.Paul Mauriat And His Orchestra Deluxe Collection 16 Albums (1966-1972).Paul Mauriat Cent Mille Chansons / Gone Is Love.Paul Mauriat Uplifting Music.(all audio cds)The'Paul Mauriat French Pops Best Selection easy listening is probably the most nice I have ever heard. Others simply the usual classical songs and contemporaries.My only problem is how to keep them last as audio cassette won't last for hundreds of years.I intend to transfer this music to cds but don't know how as I'm not very good in this sort of things.I think its helpfull to have someone to figure this out for me so that some old music will be preserve for the next generation of fans to come.

An almost complete set.......2002-01-04

Paul Mauriat produced so many masterpieces that just one or two greatest hits CDs cannot sufficiently cover all. So if you like Mauriat music but are lazy in collecting all his master works from many of his albums, then this 5 CD box set can be essential to you. To me, it is.

This box set contains some of my favorite tracks (besides those well known ones) that I couldn't find in many other Paul Mauriat CDs, such as Barsilia Carnaval, Siffier Sur La Colline, and Je T'aime Moi Non Plus. However, the set does not include the following tracks: Petit Oiseau Mecanique, Last Summer Day, Etude En Forme De Rhythm, Apres Toi, and Io Che Non Vivo, which are among my favorites hence are essential to me. For this reason, I personally call it an almost complete set. Nevertheless, this import CD set is well worth the relatively high price.

On the other hand, if you are not an absolute fan and only want to buy a single greatest hits CD, then try Retrospective or Digital Best.

uneven. As a fan of Mauriat from the old days (remember the "Le Grand..." albums from the early 60's?), one of the most important things for me was the *unity* of the 12 tracks in the record. It's not just throwing together the best of each record, one after the other. One thing is to listen to "Moulins de mon Coeur" sandwiched between "13 Jours en France" and "Jeux Interdits", and a totally different experience is to hear it in the middle of the "Grands Musiques de Film" original album.

Also, I don't know what a wash-out like "Thriller" is doing there, no love sounds in it. How can they pull "Cathérine" away from Mauriat's album dedicated to the playful spirit of children, "Un Jour, Un Enfant"? It completely spoils the effect. And "Pobre Diablo" belongs in the latin athmosphere of "Aerosong", not between the winged "Pegase" and bits and pieces of "Exclusivamente Brazil" and "Brazilian Hits".

Call me a purist, but something doesn't quite click in it for me. Release the complete albums, not just a few pieces here and there! [But it's Mauriat, after all: 4 stars, some of those melodies are still the best instrumental I've heard.]
