Mixed bag.......2007-06-25

I don't dislike this album but I probably skip more tracks here than on any of his other albums, including _This is Kingsbury_, which doesn't even play in my car stereo.

There are better versions of a few of these songs on other albums ("Throw a Boogie" on _Lo-Fi Mojo_, for instance). Biram's live performances tend to be frenetic and aimed more at keeping the alkies dancing than at doing justice to the music (although if you have not seen him live, go; it's impossible to describe unless you've seen it. But you'll understand why it's called the First Church of the Ultimate Fanaticism). I've seen and heard more than enough of him to know that when he's not trying to keep the audience whipped up, he's mesmerizing, which is something I would not say casually, but live recordings are probably not the best examples of his ability.

Sadly, "Sweet Thing" is probably one of the better tracks musically, but it's a very poor quality recording.

Interesting vocals and raw musicianship sets him apart from a lot of the other Bloodshot artists, but there is better music to be had by this fine label. Maybe if I saw him live I'd be more impressed but this disc pretty much just works as filler for me.

Okay. Really.

This SHOULD have been a great album. Unfortunately, it sounds like a BOOTLEG of a BOOTLEG recorded live in a can of creme spinach on a cheap 1959 Japanese tape recorder.

All is not lost however as a few cuts are relatively clear and distortion free and it is the PERFECT CD to put on for VISITORS who have OVERSTAYED THEIR WELCOME.

"Scott H. Biram and the Dirty Old One Man Band" the actual name almost kind of sums it up! he's pretty entertaining to say the least.
If you took Hasil Adkins and Southern Culture on the skids and turned them into one individual, it would be Scott Biram.
Straight ahead driving accoustic guitar and harmonica and gruff vocals singing about good old "Whiskey" and "Downtown Chicken" he can also tone it down and sound like a swell guy with "Sweet Thing"
Most of his work is redneck down and dirty and foot stompin (mostly his) his work is a must have.

Was Robert Johnson reincarnated into a white truck driver? I'm not even sure what that means, but it's the only way to descibe Scott H. Biram.

His CD's are amazing, however they do not do him justice. You have to see him live to fully appreciate his talents.

"Sugar" by any other name would be ..........2006-06-14

This is the London production of the Jule Styne musical "Sugar".

The story was taken from the 1959 Marilyn Munroe Movie, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - but the songs were all original Styne/Merrill numbers.

"Sugar" (the character played by Munroe in the original movie) is a musician who encounters two fellow female musicians. The catch is that they are really men, who have adopted female disguises in a desperate attempt to escape gangsters who want to eliminate them because they have witnessed a gangland slaying.

Much of the appeal of the original movie comes from Miss Munroe's "sexy innocence" - and the fine score by Adolph Deutsch. The musical is frankly not really Jule Styne at his best, although the score does have its moments. Tommy Steele is a bit of an acquired taste too.

One for collectors who want to have their Jule Styne complete (especially if you can't find a copy of the Broadway Version - "Sugar") rather than something you'd rush out to buy, really, but enjoyable enough if you can put Marilyn Munroe and the original (and infinitely better) movie out of your mind.

Skip this CD.......2007-02-13

This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.

Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06

I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.

Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.

Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13

I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!
