The Mothers of Invention answer the sentiments of the suits, the suburb dwellers, and flower children of the 60's with a big fat raspberry. Considered by many to be the Mothers' (and some would say Zappa's) best album, We're Only in it for the Money deals with harsh subject matter in a seemingly glib and light-hearted fashion (eventually a Zappa trademark), sparing no targets with catchy melodies and high-pitched vocals. Zappa applies the same aggressive studio techniques he did on Lumpy Gravy, creating a jarring collage of sound that still sounds avant-garde today. Highlights from this flawless album are numerous and include the hippie bashing "Who Needs thePeace Corps," the bedroom science of "Let's Make the Water Turn Black," the anthematic "Mother People," and the perfect payoff of "What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body?" Quite simply one of the best rock albums of all time. --Andrew BoscardinCustomer Reviews:
Classic Zappa!!.......2007-07-30
Did Anyone Else Notice This?.......2007-07-03
Phase 1: We're Only In It For The Money
Phase 2: Lumpy Gravy
Phase 3: Civilization (Phase III)
Frank even put it on the album in a speech bubble "Is this Phase 1 of Lumpy Gravy?" and on Lumpy Gravy "Is this Phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?" We're Only In It For The Money and Lumpy Gravy Have a song in common, "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" (Just "Take Your Clothes Off" on Lumpy Gravy)
If you are a Zappa fan and you don't have any of these albums BUY THEM NOW! and listen to them, back to back to back.

Zappa at his best, if you don't mind the baggage.......2007-01-12
But don't let that stop you - this is a textbook example of how rock music was already becoming a melting pot for every genre imaginable. And in this album, it's in the hands of a master. In multiple styles, brilliantly executed, the Mothers create a rich sonic landscape of memorable melodies, creative instrumentation, daring rhythmns, and superb playing. Don't miss this one.

My favorite.......2004-09-29
Then there's of course "King Of Suede," which is I think Al's only Sting and The Police parody, and he couldn't have picked a better song. I think this was the best of all of Al's parodies, because it sounds the closest to the original of any of the ones I've heard.
Every tune on this disc is great. Even the ones I didn't mention, but I think the real reason that this is my favorite "AL"-bum is because it contains my favorite Weird Al song of all time (maybe even my favorite song period). That song is "Nature Trail To Hell." It's great! Strangely enough, though, it doesn't rank as one of Al's most popular originals, and most of the reviewers here don't seem to care for it, either. Well, if you don't mind my saying so, YOU PEOPLE ARE ALL A BUNCH OF WUSSIES. You say that this song is too gruesome, and it's not typical of Al to write something so gory. Well, obviously your forgetting the song "Happy Birthday" from his self-titled debut album. You are completely glossing over "Like A Surgeon" from "Dare To Be Stupid," in which Al says the words "I'll pull his insides out and see what he ate." You are totally neglecting to remember the "Polka Party" album which contains the popular hits "Christmas At Ground Zero," a song about nuclear holocaust, the self explanatory James Brown parody "Living With A Hernia," and of course the infamous James Taylor and Charlie Manson inspired "One of Those Days," a song about a guy who pulls the wings off of flies, and shaves a woman's head, ties her up and leaves her to die in the desert. Most of these songs are newer than "Nature Trail To Hell," but the same people who bitch and moan about THAT song don't seem to know that, yet they LOVE these other even more gruesome tracks.
Don't misunderstand me. I love all of Al's songs. I'm just trying to point out that there seems to be an epidemic among his so-called following of not knowing what his art is truly about. These "fans" all seem to think that Weird Al's albums are riddled with nothing but songs about food, and lame polka medleys. That is not the case. Any casual glance through the catalog will show you that Al has touched upon subjects from all walks of life. This includes songs about love, hate, war, stalking, yellow journalism, organized crime, addiction to TV, the aches and pains of divorce, the stress of work, social diseases, obesity, cars, weapons of mass destruction, coming of age, our fear of dentists, the evils of cloning, the Star Wars craze, the unintelligible singing of modern rock groups, and the idiocy of the French. That is just a TASTE of all the things Al has sung about. I think he has made it more than clear to us that he is plenty familiar with the hard nocks of life. So, quit pissing and moaning about the goriness of "Nature Trail To Hell," and buy this CD.
Peace, Out!

This double live set showcases the peerless calisthenics abilities of the 1988 Zappa big band on a collection of crowd-pleasing favorites, concert staples and cover songs. Zappa's crystalline Stratocaster sound (a far cry from the "squank" of the '70s) highlights some of the most lyrical and inspired solo guitar work of his life. Highlights include an adrenaline charged version of "Zomby Woof" a thoroughly rocking turn at Ravel's Bolero, and a horn arrangement of Jimmy Page's "Stairway to Heaven" guitar solo. --Andrew BoscardinCustomer Reviews:

Some of the best 80s stuff is right here.......2006-02-07
If you've heard the classic 70s albums and aren't so sure about later material, give this a listen. The guitar tone is really amazing. It's pretty much nothing like that dirty wah-wah sound he was known for in the 70s, but it's kind of hard not to love the way it sounds. The band sounds crystal clear on this album. This is a really good 2 CD set.
It is ridiculous and jokey, but that's why it's fun stuff to have on in the background. FZ albums you can listen to intensely while they just play in the background. They're just that intense! But, if you're the type to plunk in a CD and stare at your radio in awe, you probably listen to too much heavy metal and you will probably tire of the jokes. If you can just enjoy fun music and have the patience to mellow out and let the songs sprawl out, you will really love this album.
Definitely check out "Make A Jazz Noise Here" which has all the same great tones but practically no lyrics. It is also a double-cd and comes from this same tour. If you like the jokey stuff, then also check out "Broadway The Hard Way," which ALSO comes from the same tour (man, that was a good tour, eh?) and so has the same great sound, but every song is more of a short goofy pop song. This album which I am currently reviewing is the middle album from that tour and it is the perfect middle ground between the all-joke of the first one and all-instrumental of the third one. Oh, it's pretty darn goofy, but there are some amazing musical passages in there, too. It is The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life!
Disk 1 - Track 7 to the end........2005-11-04
That said ... the first disk, from track 7 to the end is about as good a musical ride as you'll ever take. Move over Beethoven. The first six songs are for band warm up, and most of the second the disk is fodder for Frank to smirk in his dreams at his goofy followers, but the seven in the middle -- flat out fun, creative, beautiful, inspiring music. Buy this only for this second half of the first set - but cherish the pearl in the swine.

Album Description
One of my fondest family memories of my wonderful childhood in the 1960's was listening to record albums on the hi-fi set in the den. Real records, that you had to flip over after side one, and be careful not to leave on top of the toaster oven. This was a time where my Little Golden Books and little transistor radio were my essential bedtime companions. Not to mention the hot mug of Ovaltine that Mom would make us before hitting the sack."You Don't Have To Be Jewish" and it's follow up, "When You're In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish" were both staples in the Lifson home. Jewish comedy was not available to me as a kid through visits to the Catskills, so these albums, along with "Chanukah Carols" (also available on JMG) were my first exposure to a genre which would help prepare me for the Woody Allen and Albert Brooks movies I would love watching in the next decade, the '70s, and have enjoyed ever since. These very funny records were the brainchild of producer Bob Booker, who had produced a hugely successful pair of albums called "The First Family" which lampooned the Kennedy clan, with actor Vaughn Meader doing a brilliant JFK. These were essential listening for the early '60s, but after JFK's assassination, were quickly antiquated.
For "You Don't Have To Be Jewish," Producer Booker, pairing with writer George Foster, assembled a first class ensemble of comedic actors to play the jokes and blackout type sketches on this LP. Lou Jacobi was seen on countless sitcoms as the "Jewish Dad" type, and Valerie Harper, who would later star as "Rhoda" on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Also featured were Arlene Golonka, who played Ken Berry's girlfriend on "Mayberry R.F.D." and Bob Mc Fadden, who were the voices behind many cartoon characters including one version of "Popeye" and one of my '60s faves, "Milton The Monster." And who could forget actor Jack Gilford from the many "Crackerjack" commercials he did, where he is caught eating the kid's Crakerjack late at night?
The sketches on these two wonderfully nostalgic albums played like a prequel, maybe more Jewish version, of TV's "Laugh In" which would appear just a couple years later, in the Fall of 1968. The cast of "You Don't Have To Be Jewish" were invited to appear on the Ed Sullivan show, because of the broad appeal of the album's humor. It was clean and quaint, not biting and unsettling, like several of the "hipper" '60s comics, like Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl. These Jewish jokes were ones that could be repeated at any office gathering or weeknight Pan and Poker games, like the ones I recall my parents having in the mid '60s. They still have the black card table with the white leather top that was used at their gatherings back then, when albums like "You Don't Have To Jewish" were such a unifying force.
Classic bits on these two albums, released for the first time as a double disc CD here, include "Secret Agent James Bondtstein" and "The Cocktail Party" which is reminiscent of "Laugh In's" party scenes with the one liners floating in and out of martini glasses. "The Plotnick Diamond" bit is funny too, where Mrs. Plotnick complains that her large diamond comes enshrouded with a curse..."What's the curse her friend asks, in a Yenta-like way, "Mr. Plotnick!" is the reply. You see, these albums showcase the qualities of Jewish life we have all come to know as "trademarks," like: guilt, marrying a nice young doctor, eating as a remedy for anxiety, worrying too much, and of course, more guilt!
Jewish people throughout the ages have relied on humor as a survival technique, and have always been noted for their sardonic and revelatory abilities to translate "agony" into "ecstasy" in the form of humorous dialogue. One can see where comics like Woody Allen got a lot of his early material from gleaning the cultural mores predominant in both these albums, that show Booker and partner Foster's true genius for defining a genre through humor. The live audience present here makes the material play even more like television, helping to create a real "visual" presence for these playets, which are both timeless and charming in their appeal.
May these hilarious records provide you and your family the same "sitting around the hi-fi" happiness that I experienced when I first listened to them, wearing my pajamas that had all the gas station signs on them (my favorite was "Gulf") and eating my strawberry "Whip 'N Chill" light meringue pudding that Mom would make in those little glass dessert cups that were so evocative of the era for me. Food and humor always go well together in Jewish culture...Enjoy!
Hal Lifson

Finally able to replace our worn-out LP passed down by Baba (my bubbe).......2007-06-17
You don't have to be Jewish, indeed, but familiarity with the turf does help you understand some of the humor, particularly on the follow-up "When You're in Love...." On that album, there's a whole bit about a woman who can't remember her son's surname; even as an adult, I didn't get it until Mom explained that it's a reference to the tendency to choose a less "ethnic" name to get along. But the majority of the material was funny even to my little grade-school self in the 1970s, and it still holds up well today in its universal themes as well as in its culture-specific jabs.

This is a MUST for anyone who enjoys classical music ... .......2006-06-07
Peter Schickele (with whom I am occasionally confused - we apparently look alike!) - has got to be one of my all-time favorite composers. When I was in graduate school, I took considerable abuse from my fellow music lovers for actually having MORE albums by P.D.Q Bach than by J. S. Bach (though I think it was barely a one-point margin, really...)
But the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" approach to Beethoven's 5th symphony is not only a musical analysis of the piece as it is being played, but a slam on the constant "blah-blah-blah" that one hears during ANY sports event.
"My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" has got to be my all-time favorite spoof of the overly pompous "art song" oratorio. I've encouraged one of my colleagues (who directs the college chorale where I teach) to include it in a program, to no avail. One of these days, I'll put my money where my mouth is - and buy sheet music for the entire chorale.
This is one of only two albums that I have in (a) vinyl, (b) tape, and (c) CD format. That should be some indication of how very, very special I believe this to be. [The other, for those who are interested, is Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."]
This has been around for years, and there's a good reason. Schickele is not only funny when he wants to be, but a supremely accomplished composer and musician, with dozens and dozens of serious musical scores to his credit as well.

tune I have always thought of as sappy sweet, played on violins,
with a background of horns, (I don't know what piece, but it
makes me thing of something noble and civilized) making it a
definitive statement of a benevolent sense of life.
PDQ Bach's other works are delighfully absurd, as are Peter
Schickele's commentaries. (Well I have a new set of friends now)
New Horizons in Music Appreciation Indeed..........2002-08-08
One of the things about P.D.Q. Bach is that the more I learned about classical music the funnier I found it. Yes, I have enough memories of my mother insisting on playing the Texaco Opera quiz throughout the house on a Saturday afternoon to appreciate why "What's my Melodic Line?" and its exploration of the mysteries of the Baroque is funny, but it was not until I saw "Amadeus" and listened to "The Marriage of Figaro" that I understood why the recitatias in the Cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" were hysterical (I was tempted to share this story of Iphigenia with my Classical Mythology class, but given their tentativeness to explore Euripides I did not think it wise to have them get neck deep in Schickele). Then again, the Madrigal "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" really needs no explanation, so there is something for everybody here, no matter what you level of understanding of classical music.
In discussing the works of P.D.Q. Bach with others it becomes clear that you can no more put together an idea collection of his "best" work than you can for lesser composers like Mozart or Beethoven. But you are certainly going to find a few old favorites and maybe one or two pieces that you have hitherto managed to avoid.
