The Mothers of Invention answer the sentiments of the suits, the suburb dwellers, and flower children of the 60's with a big fat raspberry. Considered by many to be the Mothers' (and some would say Zappa's) best album, We're Only in it for the Money deals with harsh subject matter in a seemingly glib and light-hearted fashion (eventually a Zappa trademark), sparing no targets with catchy melodies and high-pitched vocals. Zappa applies the same aggressive studio techniques he did on Lumpy Gravy, creating a jarring collage of sound that still sounds avant-garde today. Highlights from this flawless album are numerous and include the hippie bashing "Who Needs thePeace Corps," the bedroom science of "Let's Make the Water Turn Black," the anthematic "Mother People," and the perfect payoff of "What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body?" Quite simply one of the best rock albums of all time. --Andrew Boscardin

5 out of 5 stars Classic Zappa!!.......2007-07-30

The man was a genius. This album just emphasizes and puncuates that fact. No matter what your taste in music, you can't dispute the technical expertise he showed in all his work.

4 out of 5 stars Did Anyone Else Notice This?.......2007-07-03

I was listening to We're Only In It For The Money in my basement and I realized:
Phase 1: We're Only In It For The Money
Phase 2: Lumpy Gravy
Phase 3: Civilization (Phase III)
Frank even put it on the album in a speech bubble "Is this Phase 1 of Lumpy Gravy?" and on Lumpy Gravy "Is this Phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?" We're Only In It For The Money and Lumpy Gravy Have a song in common, "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" (Just "Take Your Clothes Off" on Lumpy Gravy)

If you are a Zappa fan and you don't have any of these albums BUY THEM NOW! and listen to them, back to back to back.

5 out of 5 stars For the money..........2007-04-09

In college, our "hippie" friend Lowell W... introduced our group to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Soon, I was adding Mothers LPs (They came on vinyl, you know) to my ecclectic record collection. So, what was this stuff anyhow? Political comment? Rock N Roll? It certainly was not Country & Western! What a puzzle! (However, it might have been poltical satire because Zappa seems to have written a song about my family friendly congressman before he was even elected. "Just have your fun, you old son of a gun, and drive off in your Lincoln..." So, Lowell up and writes Frank about what's it really mean anyhow and signs it Lo W... Now, Zappa was not one to waste a stamp on a fan. But, a few months later a full page ad appeared for the newest Mother's album in "The Rolling Stone." The headline read: "Dear Lo: We're only in it for the money!" and there was a large photo of the album cover and some other stuff. Well, we still did not know what it was all about, but I enjoyed the album. I cannot speak for the entire listings of the Mothers on Amazon, but "We're only in it for the money" is my favorite Zappa CD. I still do not know what the goofy thing is all about, but I think the title is telling the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Zappa at his best, if you don't mind the baggage.......2007-01-12

Frank Zappa's best work is often weighed down with his insistent brand of humor, and this album, perhaps the best of his early period, is no exception. Some of his studio mastery is already at work with the story of an intruder in the studio somehow messing with the tapes weaving through the songs. And the acerbic look at the hippie scene is devastating. Anybody who ever thought about going to San Francisco with flowers in their hair should have been forced to listen first. And doesn't that sound dated; there's the rub - stuff like that drags down the timeless quality of this music. It becomes a "period document" instead of just a great musical listen.
But don't let that stop you - this is a textbook example of how rock music was already becoming a melting pot for every genre imaginable. And in this album, it's in the hands of a master. In multiple styles, brilliantly executed, the Mothers create a rich sonic landscape of memorable melodies, creative instrumentation, daring rhythmns, and superb playing. Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Zappa's Finest Hour.......2006-12-20

Some of this album is snarky, hilarious satire (Who Needs the Peace Corps?; Flower Punk; Absolutely Free; the Idiot Bastard Son), some of it's unabashed, unironic protest singing (Mother People; Concentration Moon; Mom and Dad; What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body?; Take off Your Clothes When You Dance), some of it's comic relief (Harry, You're a Beast; Let's Make the Water Turn Black), and some of it's more avant-garde (Are You Hung Up?; Hot Poop; Nasal Rentetive Callipoe Music; The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny), but every part of this forty minute suite (pretty much what it is) is unadultred brilliance that'll make your head spin. The best Zappa album out there, at least out of what I've heard.

5 out of 5 stars One of Zappa's ten best albums..........2007-01-19

This is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite Zappa albums. I am playing the living tar out of it. I never got the original LP, and I'm glad, as this CD version has to be far superior to it. It has 5 bonus tracks, all of which really enhance the album. It's bursting with some great original material (Ti$$ies and Beer, the sensitively titled I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth, the epic The Purple Lagoon/Approximate, and the hilarious tracks The Illinois Enema Bandit and Punky's Whips), and it has great live versions of classic Zappa. Cruisin' for Burgers runs an epic 9 1/2 minutes, with a great guitar solo. I'm the Slime has a very enthusiastic Don Pardo (from SNL) announcing, and The Torture Never Stops has a much more looser feel to it (and it makes it better). The band is incredibly tight as usual, and the SNL horn section really seems to be enjoying themselves (Zappa got the best out of his musicians). Warner Brothers deleting Punky's Whips for fear of offending Punky Meadows is hilarious (even though it did appear on Baby Snakes shortly after this album). One of Zappa's most brilliant albums....

3 out of 5 stars A classic masterpiece BUT.......2006-09-09

Someone (Frank before he passed?I remember he was scrambeling to get all these albums to cd) decided to add some sort of wierd slap back effect on the drums at the cd mastering stage.Glad I kept my vinyl copy all of these years so I can hear Terry B. burn the way it sounded live at the show.Every thing else about this album (compositions, performances ect.)is definitely 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Some timeless pieces of orchestral jazz.......2006-09-03

Having recently revisited my Zappa vinyl, New York is a standout for three reasons - Black Page, Black Page, and Purple Lagoon. Live orchestral jazz that has remained on medium rotation for me over the decades, pieces that may take a a few listens but reward with depth of composition, melody and the range of the musicians, whipped by Herr maestro Zappa, into pulling out the stops. Beyond "worthwhile listening" (my four star standard), I would argue these pieces alone make New York "essential" (my five star standard).

5 out of 5 stars good on LP, great on CD.......2005-12-16

I've owned this one for 25 years or so, originally on LP. On LP this one was merely very good. The sound on the LP was very thin. The CD has much improved sound quality, and it has several tracks not on the LP. The infamous "Punky's Whips" was censored off the original LP. "Cruising for Burgers" and "Pound for a Brown" are very different from the Uncle Meat versions and great. "I Am the Slime" has Zappa doing half the vocals over vampire movie type music and then Don Pardo, the announcer from the original Saturday Night Live, hollering the other half.

This album and "Roxy and Elsewhere" are great examples of his "Big Band" sound.

5 out of 5 stars Very good live album.......2005-10-23

This was recorded in late 1976. Released in 1978. On the cd reissue there were 4 tracks added, but I don't know which. Anyway, this does have previously unreleased songs like "I Promise Not To Come In Your Mouth", "Punky's Whips", "Ti***es and Beer", "The Purple Lagoon/Approximate", "Honey, Don't You Want A Man Like Me?", "The Illinois Enema Bandit", "The Black Page Drum Solo/Black Page #1", "The Black Page #2" and some more. The already released songs are "Cruising For Burgers" (from Uncle Meat), "I'm The Slime" (Over-nite Sensation), "The Torture Never Stops" (Zoot Allures), "Sofa" (One Size Fits All), and "Big Leg Emma" (Absolutely Free) and more.
This album is played very well. The Brecker Brothers are the horn section. The band is really good. So are the performances of the new and old songs. I definetly recommend this album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars "Weird Al' Yankovic in 3-D.......2006-09-07

Alfred Matthew Yankovic, commonly known as "Weird Al",had a contract to fulfill so less than a year after the release of his self-titled debut,he put out IN 3-D. The title is mentioned on the track NATURE TRAIL TO HELL,a Yankovic original. Here are more parodies and spoofs which include Yankovic paying homage to his idol Michael Jackson with EAT IT,another food song with lyrics by Yankovic and the music from Jackson's self-penned smash BEAT IT. MIDNIGHT STAR is about a fictitious tabloid very much like the real NATIONAL ENQUIRER and GLOBE. THE BRADY BUNCH is one I always loved. The parody of Men Without Hats' THE SAFETY DANCE tells about the ABC 1969-74 hit sitcom THE BRADY BUNCH and conflict over television("there's only one set so whatever you watch, well you know I gotta watch it too."). Other Yankovic originals include BUY ME A CONDO,MR. POPEIL and THAT BOY COULD DANCE. Another television parody is I LOST ON JEOPARDY,with music from the Greg Kihn Band's (OUR LOVE'S IN)JEOPARDY. We see in the video,Al as a contestant on the real game show, still hosted by Alex Trebek. Al is physically evicted from the studio. The track features a vocal appearance by Don Pardo, the overall announcer for NBC's Saturday Night Live. However,Yankovic does polka-style covers of non-satirical hit songs so POLKAS ON 45 features a medley of songs like hits from Devo,The Who and others. KING OF SUEDE is in no way associated with food or television, but is associated with jackets and suits. The parody features music from Sting's KING OF PAIN. What about THEME FROM ROCKY XIII? In reality, there were only five. The parody of Survivor's hit song EYE OF THE TIGER,featured in the 1982 Sylvester Stallone film ROCKY III,tells about a guy who owns and operates a bakery-deli. This track could also be entitled "The Rye or the Kaiser",in sync to EOTT. This album was released on Rock and Roll Records,a subsidiary of both Scotti Brothers(Survivor's label) and CBS.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Songs, Fabulous parodies.......2006-01-11

This is one of the funniest cds I've ever listened to. Extremely well-done parodies, hilarious originals, and a snappy polka-style remix of some popular songs that will make your sides split :)

5 out of 5 stars "Polka down with your bad self.".......2005-03-25

This was "Weird Al's" breakthrough album. This was the first album to feature Al's touring band of guitarist Jim West, bassist Steve Jay and drummer Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz. The album opens with Al's biggest hit, "Eat It". There are four other great parodies of then recent hits, including the chart singles "King of Suede" and "I Lost on Jeopardy". Al also wrote five funny original songs on this album. "Midnight Star" is a hilarious song about tabloid newspapers. "Buy Me a Condo" is a reggae song about a Jamaican trying to assimilate in America. "Mr. Popeil" is a funny song about the creator of Veg-a-matic and many other "as seen on TV" products (Popeil's daughter actually sings background vocals on this song). "That Boy Could Dance" is about a dorky guy who was a good dancer, and it's probably my least favorite song on the album (but still pretty good). "Nature Trail To Hell" is a great song that is a parody of horror movie trailers. The album also features Al's first polka style medley of rock songs, "Polkas on 45". He continued to do a polka medley on virtually all his albums. This is a great album that Al's fans will love.

"Now how much would you pay?"

    5 out of 5 stars My favorite.......2004-09-29

Like the title of my review says, this is without a doubt my favorite Weird Al CD. I don't know why. Most people pick "Even Worse," or "Off the Deep End" as their favorites, but I like this one the best. It goes without saying that "Eat It," and the "Theme from Rocky XIII" are the most popular songs on this "AL"-bum, along with the bitterly satirical tabloid magazine dig "Midnight Star," and the salute to the 70's "Polkas on 45." "The Brady Bunch" is a cool song too. It's a really good parody of a song called "Safety Dance" by a group called "Men Without Hats." Somebody said in another review that "Men At Work" did that song, but I'm afraid their wrong. It was "Men Without Hats," but who cares? I'm rambling.

Then there's of course "King Of Suede," which is I think Al's only Sting and The Police parody, and he couldn't have picked a better song. I think this was the best of all of Al's parodies, because it sounds the closest to the original of any of the ones I've heard.

Every tune on this disc is great. Even the ones I didn't mention, but I think the real reason that this is my favorite "AL"-bum is because it contains my favorite Weird Al song of all time (maybe even my favorite song period). That song is "Nature Trail To Hell." It's great! Strangely enough, though, it doesn't rank as one of Al's most popular originals, and most of the reviewers here don't seem to care for it, either. Well, if you don't mind my saying so, YOU PEOPLE ARE ALL A BUNCH OF WUSSIES. You say that this song is too gruesome, and it's not typical of Al to write something so gory. Well, obviously your forgetting the song "Happy Birthday" from his self-titled debut album. You are completely glossing over "Like A Surgeon" from "Dare To Be Stupid," in which Al says the words "I'll pull his insides out and see what he ate." You are totally neglecting to remember the "Polka Party" album which contains the popular hits "Christmas At Ground Zero," a song about nuclear holocaust, the self explanatory James Brown parody "Living With A Hernia," and of course the infamous James Taylor and Charlie Manson inspired "One of Those Days," a song about a guy who pulls the wings off of flies, and shaves a woman's head, ties her up and leaves her to die in the desert. Most of these songs are newer than "Nature Trail To Hell," but the same people who bitch and moan about THAT song don't seem to know that, yet they LOVE these other even more gruesome tracks.

Don't misunderstand me. I love all of Al's songs. I'm just trying to point out that there seems to be an epidemic among his so-called following of not knowing what his art is truly about. These "fans" all seem to think that Weird Al's albums are riddled with nothing but songs about food, and lame polka medleys. That is not the case. Any casual glance through the catalog will show you that Al has touched upon subjects from all walks of life. This includes songs about love, hate, war, stalking, yellow journalism, organized crime, addiction to TV, the aches and pains of divorce, the stress of work, social diseases, obesity, cars, weapons of mass destruction, coming of age, our fear of dentists, the evils of cloning, the Star Wars craze, the unintelligible singing of modern rock groups, and the idiocy of the French. That is just a TASTE of all the things Al has sung about. I think he has made it more than clear to us that he is plenty familiar with the hard nocks of life. So, quit pissing and moaning about the goriness of "Nature Trail To Hell," and buy this CD.

    Peace, Out!

    Uncle Floyd

4 out of 5 stars One of Weird Al's Best Records.......2004-05-09

This is one of Weird Al Yankovic's best cds. It starts with a really cool parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" called "Eat It", then it is the best song on the record: Midnight Star. A wonderful song about the crazy lying magazine "Midnight Star". Next, its a parody of Men at Work's "The Safety Dance", called "The Brady Bunch", a catchy song about how Al doesn't want to watch The Brady Bunch. Then, its "Buy Me A Condo", which is not the best, but ok. Then "I Lost On Jeoprody" a very good song about Al losing on Jeoprody. Then, the polka, "Polkas On 45" another medley. Then, "Mr.Popeil", another ok song. Then, King of Suede, another ok song. Next, "That Boy Could Dance", another ok sopng. then, "Theme From Rocky XIII(The Rye or the Kaiser)". Finally, Al ends the album with an awesome "Nature Trail To Hell".

This double live set showcases the peerless calisthenics abilities of the 1988 Zappa big band on a collection of crowd-pleasing favorites, concert staples and cover songs. Zappa's crystalline Stratocaster sound (a far cry from the "squank" of the '70s) highlights some of the most lyrical and inspired solo guitar work of his life. Highlights include an adrenaline charged version of "Zomby Woof" a thoroughly rocking turn at Ravel's Bolero, and a horn arrangement of Jimmy Page's "Stairway to Heaven" guitar solo. --Andrew Boscardin

4 out of 5 stars you never heard?.......2007-05-26

i saw a couple of shows on this tour the last two times i saw frank perform. it is a great band, did he ever have a bad one or an uninspired one? as far as this being the best live disc or discs? no. the sound quality is awesome the arrangements interesting and if you like big band productions this is for you.....

5 out of 5 stars Favorite FZ album.......2007-04-06

The way Bolero flows into Zoot Allures is very clever. In your face, Maurice, you no talent hack. And imagine the guitars of Stairway To Heaven done in horns. And rigt in the middle of Zombie Wolf, Joe Satriani's evil twin clone does some of his best work ever. The band at it's peak, plus a jab or two at Jimmy Swaggart during his post-sinning period. What more do you need?

4 out of 5 stars A little confusing what to make out of this..........2006-02-27

This package is quite loaded with Zappa gems. But at the same time, drummer Chad Wackerman, literally, in my opinon, ruins some songs. "Trouble Every Day", "Peguin in Bondage", "Mr. Green Genes" and "Find Her Finer" grooves are so mechanical, to fast, that in ruins the performance (they still have there moments). The squeky clean and seemingly to perfrect talent of Wackerman is to sterile at times for me. With that said, the rest of the band is quite good, and Wackerman dosen't always screw everything up. "Floretine Pogan (with a great guitar solo)" is literally amazing, in fact, the whole batch of "One Size Fits All" songs are worth the price alone. There are so many covers, which, to me, is pointless. Considering the amount of songs Zappa wrote and the brilliance of them, why cover some mediocore (way overplayed) tunes of Zepplin, Hendrix and Cream. In particular, "Stairway to Heaven", sucks, and why its reggae, is beyond me. In contrast, Ravels, "Bolereo", is awesome and Zappa's reggae arrangement is interesting enough to be on the record. In the end, despite nitpicking problems (another is Zappa guitar tone, which, at times, is hard to hear correctly because its so monotone and subdued), this comes off as a well recorded and fun record. I seem to be alone in my critique of this record, Zappa even said, this was possibly the best band he had ever put out on the road. "Florentine Pogan", "Heavy Duty Judy", and "Bolereo" make it worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best 80s stuff is right here.......2006-02-07

A lot of people are hung up on the Mothers, but Frank did a lot better stuff after they disbanded. Unfortunately, all people remember is the dirty humor stuff, but as Zappa himself said, "I think I have 1200 titles. If there's more than 100 sex songs, I'd be surprised."

If you've heard the classic 70s albums and aren't so sure about later material, give this a listen. The guitar tone is really amazing. It's pretty much nothing like that dirty wah-wah sound he was known for in the 70s, but it's kind of hard not to love the way it sounds. The band sounds crystal clear on this album. This is a really good 2 CD set.

It is ridiculous and jokey, but that's why it's fun stuff to have on in the background. FZ albums you can listen to intensely while they just play in the background. They're just that intense! But, if you're the type to plunk in a CD and stare at your radio in awe, you probably listen to too much heavy metal and you will probably tire of the jokes. If you can just enjoy fun music and have the patience to mellow out and let the songs sprawl out, you will really love this album.

Definitely check out "Make A Jazz Noise Here" which has all the same great tones but practically no lyrics. It is also a double-cd and comes from this same tour. If you like the jokey stuff, then also check out "Broadway The Hard Way," which ALSO comes from the same tour (man, that was a good tour, eh?) and so has the same great sound, but every song is more of a short goofy pop song. This album which I am currently reviewing is the middle album from that tour and it is the perfect middle ground between the all-joke of the first one and all-instrumental of the third one. Oh, it's pretty darn goofy, but there are some amazing musical passages in there, too. It is The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life!

    5 out of 5 stars Disk 1 - Track 7 to the end........2005-11-04

I agree with some reviewers that Frank is "over the top" in some of his more commercial music - and I do not mean that as a compliment .... I'll go a step further: Frank is making fun of his audience a great many times, and they seem to relish being the butt of his jokes.

That said ... the first disk, from track 7 to the end is about as good a musical ride as you'll ever take. Move over Beethoven. The first six songs are for band warm up, and most of the second the disk is fodder for Frank to smirk in his dreams at his goofy followers, but the seven in the middle -- flat out fun, creative, beautiful, inspiring music. Buy this only for this second half of the first set - but cherish the pearl in the swine.

this album is like the straight A student who gets all the credit, love and praise, while the rest of the brothers and sisters,(bucky fellini, eat yr paisely, metaphysical graffitti) are the red-headed stepchildren. is "big Lizard" a classic? yep. hilarious? you betcha. the only album worth owning? no effin' way. in my opinion, 'big liz' is the gateway drug, the reefer if you will, which leads to much better stuff. 'plumb dumb' and 'deans dream' are two of their best songs, as are 'serrated edge,' 'vfw' 'bitchin' camaro' and the title track. just don't stop here; you'd be missing out on a lot.

4 out of 5 stars the one album every "punk rocker" has owned at least 3 times in their lives.......2006-10-10

there is no way this album could ever be put out these days. definately had to come out in '84. I mean could you see any band doing aids jokes and getting away with it? well, the milkmen did. has anyone ever noticed the references to f.o.d? "my parents said if i eat all my food then i can go to hardcore show and see f.o.d."-nutrtion. there's another reference to them on a live recording of "milkmen stomp". just curious.

5 out of 5 stars Best album from one of the best bands.......2006-06-10

Day-OM! This rekkid ought to be thought of as a classic, it has Laundromat Song, Bitchin' Camaro, Violent School, Nutrition, Dean's Dream, almost every track is freaking awesome and its 23 tracks long! If you don't have this album, well, you suck.

This is the best crappy little punk band ever... This record is just one that you can't get sick of. Great music for anything! "I don't wanna go on the beach, NO FUN!!" Haha!

5 out of 5 stars HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST ALBUM EVER!!.......2005-12-12

i first bought this album on tape. i am now on my 3rd copy on cd and also have it on vinyl. every song is amazing, however "serrated edge" shines above every other song on the album, as well as every song ever recorded by any artist EVER!!

all the other reviews here, describing the milkmen as "funny" make them sound like they are a novelty act, but their so much more.

    Album Description

One of my fondest family memories of my wonderful childhood in the 1960's was listening to record albums on the hi-fi set in the den. Real records, that you had to flip over after side one, and be careful not to leave on top of the toaster oven. This was a time where my Little Golden Books and little transistor radio were my essential bedtime companions. Not to mention the hot mug of Ovaltine that Mom would make us before hitting the sack.

"You Don't Have To Be Jewish" and it's follow up, "When You're In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish" were both staples in the Lifson home. Jewish comedy was not available to me as a kid through visits to the Catskills, so these albums, along with "Chanukah Carols" (also available on JMG) were my first exposure to a genre which would help prepare me for the Woody Allen and Albert Brooks movies I would love watching in the next decade, the '70s, and have enjoyed ever since. These very funny records were the brainchild of producer Bob Booker, who had produced a hugely successful pair of albums called "The First Family" which lampooned the Kennedy clan, with actor Vaughn Meader doing a brilliant JFK. These were essential listening for the early '60s, but after JFK's assassination, were quickly antiquated.

For "You Don't Have To Be Jewish," Producer Booker, pairing with writer George Foster, assembled a first class ensemble of comedic actors to play the jokes and blackout type sketches on this LP. Lou Jacobi was seen on countless sitcoms as the "Jewish Dad" type, and Valerie Harper, who would later star as "Rhoda" on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Also featured were Arlene Golonka, who played Ken Berry's girlfriend on "Mayberry R.F.D." and Bob Mc Fadden, who were the voices behind many cartoon characters including one version of "Popeye" and one of my '60s faves, "Milton The Monster." And who could forget actor Jack Gilford from the many "Crackerjack" commercials he did, where he is caught eating the kid's Crakerjack late at night?

The sketches on these two wonderfully nostalgic albums played like a prequel, maybe more Jewish version, of TV's "Laugh In" which would appear just a couple years later, in the Fall of 1968. The cast of "You Don't Have To Be Jewish" were invited to appear on the Ed Sullivan show, because of the broad appeal of the album's humor. It was clean and quaint, not biting and unsettling, like several of the "hipper" '60s comics, like Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl. These Jewish jokes were ones that could be repeated at any office gathering or weeknight Pan and Poker games, like the ones I recall my parents having in the mid '60s. They still have the black card table with the white leather top that was used at their gatherings back then, when albums like "You Don't Have To Jewish" were such a unifying force.

Classic bits on these two albums, released for the first time as a double disc CD here, include "Secret Agent James Bondtstein" and "The Cocktail Party" which is reminiscent of "Laugh In's" party scenes with the one liners floating in and out of martini glasses. "The Plotnick Diamond" bit is funny too, where Mrs. Plotnick complains that her large diamond comes enshrouded with a curse..."What's the curse her friend asks, in a Yenta-like way, "Mr. Plotnick!" is the reply. You see, these albums showcase the qualities of Jewish life we have all come to know as "trademarks," like: guilt, marrying a nice young doctor, eating as a remedy for anxiety, worrying too much, and of course, more guilt!

Jewish people throughout the ages have relied on humor as a survival technique, and have always been noted for their sardonic and revelatory abilities to translate "agony" into "ecstasy" in the form of humorous dialogue. One can see where comics like Woody Allen got a lot of his early material from gleaning the cultural mores predominant in both these albums, that show Booker and partner Foster's true genius for defining a genre through humor. The live audience present here makes the material play even more like television, helping to create a real "visual" presence for these playets, which are both timeless and charming in their appeal.

May these hilarious records provide you and your family the same "sitting around the hi-fi" happiness that I experienced when I first listened to them, wearing my pajamas that had all the gas station signs on them (my favorite was "Gulf") and eating my strawberry "Whip 'N Chill" light meringue pudding that Mom would make in those little glass dessert cups that were so evocative of the era for me. Food and humor always go well together in Jewish culture...Enjoy!

    Hal Lifson

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally able to replace our worn-out LP passed down by Baba (my bubbe).......2007-06-17

The title, as everyone will tell you is true: My gentile mom was just as big a fan of the 1965 album as my dad and his Ukrainian Jewish mother. "The Reading of the Will" is one favorite family classic, as is the hide-and-seek playing wife who, drawn out by her husband's offer of expensive jewelry, coyly proclaims, "I'm hiiii-ding ... IN THE FRONT CLOSET!" More than 40 years later, the jokes still hold up, though Mom did observe when we listened to the CD that more of the jokes than she remembered are slightly mean-spirited. Don't misunderstand: They are never mean-spirited toward Jewish people, only toward whichever person is the butt of the joke. The second album in this double CD was a 1966 follow-up to the Grammy-nominated original, and contains one version of "The Ballad of Irving," a song that will be familiar to any Dr. Demento fan. (Sorry to say, this version does NOT have the line, "He came from the old Bar Mitzvah spread / With a 10-gallon yarmulke on his head"!)

You don't have to be Jewish, indeed, but familiarity with the turf does help you understand some of the humor, particularly on the follow-up "When You're in Love...." On that album, there's a whole bit about a woman who can't remember her son's surname; even as an adult, I didn't get it until Mom explained that it's a reference to the tendency to choose a less "ethnic" name to get along. But the majority of the material was funny even to my little grade-school self in the 1970s, and it still holds up well today in its universal themes as well as in its culture-specific jabs.

My review can't possibly sound as intelligent and probing as the previous reviews... so I will just have to say. I agree... this is a classic and a must own.

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST for anyone who enjoys classical music ... .......2006-06-07

...BUT not if you take it SO seriously that you have lost your sense of humor.

Peter Schickele (with whom I am occasionally confused - we apparently look alike!) - has got to be one of my all-time favorite composers. When I was in graduate school, I took considerable abuse from my fellow music lovers for actually having MORE albums by P.D.Q Bach than by J. S. Bach (though I think it was barely a one-point margin, really...)

But the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" approach to Beethoven's 5th symphony is not only a musical analysis of the piece as it is being played, but a slam on the constant "blah-blah-blah" that one hears during ANY sports event.

"My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" has got to be my all-time favorite spoof of the overly pompous "art song" oratorio. I've encouraged one of my colleagues (who directs the college chorale where I teach) to include it in a program, to no avail. One of these days, I'll put my money where my mouth is - and buy sheet music for the entire chorale.

This is one of only two albums that I have in (a) vinyl, (b) tape, and (c) CD format. That should be some indication of how very, very special I believe this to be. [The other, for those who are interested, is Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."]

This has been around for years, and there's a good reason. Schickele is not only funny when he wants to be, but a supremely accomplished composer and musician, with dozens and dozens of serious musical scores to his credit as well.

5 out of 5 stars PDQ Bach -- The Spike Jones of Classical Music.......2006-03-16

For the classical music lover, this is an amazing spoof. For those who do not know classical music well, this is still highly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Recaptured (Twisted) Youth.......2003-03-31

My friend and I saw the good Prof. Schickele here in Pasadena last night (March 29th-- AND the conductor of the Pasadena Symphony is Jorge Meister!)-- and the last number on the program was the WONDERFUL "The Seasonings"-- I had a very hard time even after all these years of first hearing this on a REAL record of not singing along with every little tune!!! This piece last night, being sung by singers whom I do not doubt were not even born when I first heard a recording of it, were as good as the ones I remember from my decadent youth on the original recording. Buy this C.D. if only for this piece!

5 out of 5 stars I store it in the CD changer in my car........2002-10-06

My favorite single line of music from this is from "The Unbegun Symphony". Who would think to combine "You are my sunshine", a
tune I have always thought of as sappy sweet, played on violins,
with a background of horns, (I don't know what piece, but it
makes me thing of something noble and civilized) making it a
definitive statement of a benevolent sense of life.
PDQ Bach's other works are delighfully absurd, as are Peter
Schickele's commentaries. (Well I have a new set of friends now)

5 out of 5 stars New Horizons in Music Appreciation Indeed..........2002-08-08

It was while sitting in Music Appreciation in college that I was first introduced to the work of P.D.Q. Bach, specifically the track "New Horizons in Music Appreciation: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony," in which Professor Peter Schickele and Robert Dennis serve as the announcers for a spirited game involving the first movement of that particular work. Not only was it funny ("He's playing a cadenza! He's out of his mind! He thinks its an oboe concerto!") it was also more informative than the professor ("I get the feeling we are going to hear a lot of that four note motif, Bob").

One of the things about P.D.Q. Bach is that the more I learned about classical music the funnier I found it. Yes, I have enough memories of my mother insisting on playing the Texaco Opera quiz throughout the house on a Saturday afternoon to appreciate why "What's my Melodic Line?" and its exploration of the mysteries of the Baroque is funny, but it was not until I saw "Amadeus" and listened to "The Marriage of Figaro" that I understood why the recitatias in the Cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" were hysterical (I was tempted to share this story of Iphigenia with my Classical Mythology class, but given their tentativeness to explore Euripides I did not think it wise to have them get neck deep in Schickele). Then again, the Madrigal "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" really needs no explanation, so there is something for everybody here, no matter what you level of understanding of classical music.

In discussing the works of P.D.Q. Bach with others it becomes clear that you can no more put together an idea collection of his "best" work than you can for lesser composers like Mozart or Beethoven. But you are certainly going to find a few old favorites and maybe one or two pieces that you have hitherto managed to avoid.

Now, if we can only get a University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople t-shirt...
