Martin is one of a unique, very rare breed of really gifted English songwriters in the mold of Ray Davies & Nick Drake. 'The Spirit Cage' is his first newly recorded album for many years.

After the series of low-fi Cleaners from Venus albums (and not forgetting The Brotherhood of Lizards)and his two solo albums, I found Spirit Cage to be a little disappointing. Perhaps it's the return to low-fi sound or the lack of musical flourishes. The arrangements are spare.

Still, Martin has a gift and even lesser Newell is better than 90% of the stuff on the radio. What makes Newell unique is his willingness to go it alone and rejection of radio convention. Stocked to the brim with hooks SC manages to transcend its limitations. As a pop songwriter Newell has very few peers (Andy Partridge, Jason Falkner, Neil Finn and Aimee Mann all are comparable to Newell when he's at his best)and even if SC isn't as compelling or powerful as TLE or The Offwhite Album it still has its moments.

Martin Newell is one of those artists who creates selfish fans. He's so good, you seethe against the ignorant masses that continue to ignore him. Perversely, however, your "inner music snob" secretly delights in the fact that the ignorant masses haven't yet despoiled your "personal" discovery. After about 20 years and about as many lo-fi albums, however, you start to feel guilty...doesn't this poor guy at least deserve a decent producer?! A studio with at least 16 tracks for once? Newell's latest release, "The Spirit Cage", full of his usual wonderful tunesmithing but sonically flat, cries out for a filthy rich patron. (Paul Allen, are you listening? Have a heart!) Be the first on your block to have a jangly Beatles/Ray Davies influenced genius in your back yard! (Completely house trained, only requires to be fed tea and biscuits three times a day.) In the meantime, pick up a copy of "Spirit Cage". In fact...buy two-hand one to a stranger! Cheers!
