The Funniest Man I Ever Got To Meet Back Stage!.......2006-06-08
The Very Best of Brother Dave has to be the best you've ever heard. I was very fortunate to get to meet with him backstage after a performance in Columbus, Georgia. It was during Viet Nam and he came for us soldiers. The U. S. Army Infantry Center at Fort Benning was nearby. Before going into the Army I had purchased every record he had put on the market and listened to them so often that I could say each word on each album, word for word, just a split second before Dave would say them on the recording. My first opportunity to see him live was in my hometime of Jacksonville, Florida. He was unbelievable! But, when I saw him perform in Columbus and then was able to speak with him afterwards backstage made that night unbelievable. He was very warm and gracious. Not knowing it would be the last time I would see him alive, made it even a more special time in my life. His humor had a lot of current event material in it and his language was always clean. There will never be another Brother Dave Gardner!!
It's authentic Brother Dave.......2005-08-20
This CD is a sample from some of Dave's stories that you will enjoy. It's his milder stuff, but still funny. I enjoyed it.
Not what I remembered.......2005-07-06
I first heard Brother Dave when I was a young teenager, and remembered him as being funny. But after hearing this album after 40 years had passed, I didn't laugh much at all. I cringed a lot. Don't order this one unless you're a right-winger, preferably from the South! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
What can I say? He's still great after all this time........2004-10-22
Brother Dave is consistantly funny and sometimes ROTFLMAO hilarious. What can I say? I hadn't heard any of his work for nearly 30 years until I listened to this CD today. Thirty years ago I had no idea he was so deep and such an incisive, observant wit. Then I just thought he was funny. Now, with the persepctive of age I can see just how he is funny so I can appreciate him even more.
Disappointing.......2002-10-31
I've been a Brother Dave fan for longer than I can remember. I grew up with his albums. I always respected his relaxed irreverence and his ability to gently poke fun at everyone.
I own several of Brother Dave's earlier albums. I bought this one mostly out of curiosity that arose from some of the criticism in these reviews. Frankly, I was very skeptical of some of the comments made, particularly the accusations of racism.
I should have kept my money. And my illusions.
The Brother Dave I always loved can be characterized by one of my favorite quotes. "It don't make no difference." This delivered with a warm chuckle.
The Brother Dave that recorded this album was focused on differences. His gentle pokes at meaningless differences had become angry jabs at everything outside the "establishment". To use the sixties word for such things. A younger Brother Dave taught me to look at the world with my eyes open. This later Brother Dave lashed out with his mind tightly closed.
Perhaps dissapointing is too mild a word.
Meet Brother Dave on the "Rejoice Dear Hearts" / "Kick Thy Own Self" double album CD. Let this mistake be forgotten.
