The king of pop parodies returns with another zany collection of tunes that poke fun at pop culture. There are a handful of undeniably funny moments--notably "The Saga Begins," which pairs the tune to Don McLean's horrendously sentimental "American Pie" with the plot to the first Star Wars prequel, and a fun, nonstop-dancing polka medley of late-'90s hits that starts with the Spice Girls and ends with Semisonic. Overall, Running with Scissors is well-executed and actually humorous, but the material is a day late and a dollar short. "Pretty Fly for a Rabbi" is funny once, maybe, but the majority of the disc consists of tepid takes on yesterday's news; the best jokes are devoted to Jerry Springer, Eddie Vedder, the Swing craze, and this place called Silicon Valley where they make computers. Why didn't someone tell Weird Al that a parody of Nine Inch Nails' lifeless industrial pop would have already sounded dated in 1995? It must be hard to stay on top of all the current trends and parody them as they happen, but that is something that Weird Al has done in the past, and perhaps will do again. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Keep it coming.......2007-07-24

First of all, let me say "woooooooooooooooooooooooow." This album great and most certainly go down as one of Al's greatest hits.
First off is "The Saga Begins" a funny Star Wars song with Obi Wan telling the story of the first Episode.
Then there's " My Baby's in Love With Eddie Veder" I myself have never hear of Eddie Veder but all the same, the song is very funny with Al's girl friend falling head-over-heels in love with Eddie.
Then there's "Pretty Fly For a Rabbi" anoth great parody of "Pretty Fly For a White Guy". The song's very funny!
Then "Weird Al Theme Song" which of course was the theme song for his saturday morning show.
There's much much more but I'm going to stop here. The album is great! You'd have to be an idiot to say it's boring and not funny.
But before I leave off I want to tell you about the last song, "Albuquerque". LOL!!! I laughed my butt off listening to it! It's hard to describe, more a story than a song, but non-the-less knock-your-shoes-off funny!
If I could give this album ten stars I most certainly would!
Keep up the awesome work Al!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Al-Bum.......2007-06-26

"Running With Scissors" is another of the greatest albums Weird Al has released. While not as great as Poodle Hat or his most recent Straight Outta Lynwood. However, it's timeless nonetheless for numerous reasons. Following, a brief review of each of the 12 humurous songs.

The Saga Begins:

Suffice it to say, based upon this song and his own classic (at least in my home) "Yoda" from his Dare To Be Stupid album, Mr. Yankovic is a fan of the Star Wars films. Since this album was released shortly after the much ballyhooed Star Wars - Episode I, The Phantom Menace (Widescreen Edition) came out, even Al had to admit there was much more wrong with the film then there was right. So, as a little dedication to such awfulness, he tells the tale of the first film to the tune of 'American Pie.' Instead of "Bye, bye Miss American Pie", Weird Al croons "My My, this here Anakin guy..." Another of the many dead on parodies from Al.

My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder

I personally don't understand what Yankovic was going for with this song. But apparently, his girlfriend at the time was a very huge fan of singer Eddie Vedder. This is disheartning to Al, since he isn't such a big fan.

Pretty Fly for A Rabbi

A direct takeoff of the hit song "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" by the Offspring. The original song was a pretty silly one on it's own. But, I believe since it was so overly popular, Weird Al just had to throw in his own version. But instead of a dorky White Guy yearning for an ode of coolness, a local Rabbi is popular with all the kids. He works hard, and has fun! Shalom!

The Weird Al Show Theme

Needless to say, this is the theme song used for the short lived, and horribly treated The Weird Al Show - The Complete Series. It's a fast paced and hilarious adventure through Yankovic's imaginary day and how he came across his underground clubhouse.

Jerry Springer

I personally can't stand Springer in any medium. There's very little talented needed in allowing white trash on stage to fight while standing there watching them. At first, I didn't like the Barenaked Ladies original version: 'One Week.' However, according to Al, the members of the band are pretty good friends with him and he wanted to give an musical 'shout out' to them with this song based upon the Jerry Springer show and all the utterly ridiculousness that goes on there. Just as fast paced as the original and quite a bit more hilarious.

Germs

While not a direct parody of any one song, this one is more of a song in the style of numerous Nine Inch Nails songs, or albums for that matter. From Weird Al's point of view, he's slowly becoming obsessive about 'all the microscopic organisms living on my skin.' Crying out how they're 'all over me' and he 'can't get them off of me.' A pretty catchy song if you like the industrial sound of Trent Reznor and company.

Polka Power

The traditional medly of the popular songs during the albums original release set to polka music. At one time it's often hilarious to hear all the songs in a sort of twisted, musical time capsule. On the other end, it's just funny hearing these popular, often very 'serious' songs being sung to the tune of polka music.

Your Horoscope for Today

Yankovic takes us through each and every Zodiac sign for his own sick and twisted version of what every newspaper shovels out daily. Unfortunately, according to his sources, there's not about to be a good day in sight for anyone any time soon. Tragic, yes. Hilarious, yes again.

It's All About the Pentiums

Weird Al raps yet again. This time to the tune of "All About the Benjamins" by P. Diddy. It's my personal favorite of the album. Al as a tough 'gangsta' type who is also a proud computer nerd AND bully is more than hilarious. The video is brilliant as well, which can be seen here: Weird Al Yankovic - The Ultimate Video Collection.

Truck Drivin' Song

In a word: Odd. Brilliant yes, but extremely odd. At the same time, hearing Weird Al with his best baratone voice singing as a gruff road-weary truck driver singing about how he's wearing high heels, a feather boa, and hoping his makeup doesn't run is just amazingly funny.

Grapefruit Diet

Some may not remember, but there was a short time in which "Swing" music was back in style for about three weeks. During said time, Brian Setzer released a catch song called "Zoot Suit Riot." With the big band sound and 50's era guitar riffs, it was a hit. Such a hit in fact, Al took a jab at it with this brilliant masterpiece. Yet another in a long line of food based songs, it's another hilarious work of a morbidly obese man and his desperate need to lose weight. Since nothing else has worked, he's decided to eat nothing but grapfruits! Hilarity ensues!

Albuquerque

Have you sat with a friend and that friend wanted to tell you this hilarious anecdote? The only catch is, the anecdote is more like a novel spoken first hand. In this roughly 12 minute track, Al amusingly tells the story of how he wound up in the beloved New Mexico city.

These songs are excellent. You'll enjoy them again and again and again. It's all about the Pentiums anyway!

Running With Scissors Volcano Entertainment
An Album by Weird Al Yankovic Manufactured 1999
12 Songs, $20.00

Its polka time! Put on your lederhosen and grab your accordion because your bout to hear one of the greatest CD`s of all time. It is called "Running With Scissors" by artist "Weird Al
Yankovic". In Running With Scissors, Weird Al Yankovic parodies 12 of the most popuar songs from the past with a traditional polka medley thats fun to sing and listen to! This CD is very comical, as Weird Al Yankovic is a musical comedian.

Weird Al has been doing this sort of thing since the late 1970`s, and he has become a favorie to those who don`t take life too seriously (or at least shouldn`t). One of the most enjoyed songs on "Running With Scissors" is "The Saga Begins", which is aparody of the hit song "American Pie" from the 1970`s where he describes the first Star Wars movie. "The Saga Begins" is not the only good song, there are many more on this great CD.

On every CD, Weird Al has an original "made-up" song. "Albuquerque" is about Weird Al Yankovic`s fictional life in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is truly unique with lyrics so long that they cannot be provided on the lyric packet (inside the CD). In its place, Al Yankovic
sarcastically writes, "You know what? THe rest of the lyics won`t fit here. What a drag, huh?
We all just feel just horrible about this. Well, I guess you will just have to listen really carefully and try to figure out the rest of the words for yourself. Good Luck." He really has a sense of humor!

Al Yankovic has an entire band. He is the leac vocal, who also plays the accordion and keyboards. The other band members consist of Al`s friendss. They are: Jim West, who plays guitar and banjo, Steve Jay, who plays bass guitar, and Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz (get it?- Bermuda shorts) who plays drums, percussion, and and is the band`s official historian. The all provide background vocals. Al`s group is based in Los Angeles, not far from Al`s birthplace in Lynwood, California.

"Running With Scissors" has become very famous. In 1999, the album was featured in three CD charts. In "The Billboard 200" and "The Top Canadian Albums" it ranked as the sixteenth best album. In hthe "Top Internet Albums" it was the third best, and two of the hit s ongs were "The Saga Begins" and "Its All About The Pentiums." THis is truly a timeless CD! All of its tunes are wonderfully handpicked! Don't be shy and give it a try, I know you will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great C.D.......2007-06-08

I love weird Al. His stuff is always funny-some more so than others. This C.D. has several good songs on it.
Song One is a paradie of American Pie and is about the first Star Wars prequel. There is also Pretty Fly for a white guy, and A One Week Parade about people on Jerry Springer. Great Stuff!!

Can't get enough of 1970s-themed soundtracks? Here's another one! Like most of its period brethrens, Running With Scissors starts with a stock made of familiar hits ("Blinded by the Light," "Bennie and the Jets," "Year of the Cat"); it then adds a splash of lesser-known songs by big acts (10cc's "The Things We Do for Love") and a pinch of slightly older tunes for taste (a pair of Nat King Coles and Vince Guaraldi's "O Tannenbaum," from A Charlie Brown Christmas). Even the new track (Catherine Feeny's "Mr. Blue") sounds air-lifted from 1975. Of course, the same period songs that feel old-hat on their own usually work marvel in the context of the movie, and in a way their best use is as memory-joggers for fans of said movie. If you like mid-1970s pop, this CD will please you, but then you may well have these songs already. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Memory Lane.......2007-07-15

Running with Scissors was a disturbing book and a lousy movie but it had a truly terrific soundtrack. Don't miss this trip down Memory Lane.

3 out of 5 stars Chercher Le Bill.......2007-03-02

One of the highlights of the colorful soundtrack to this crazy film was the use of three Bill Evans tunes: Waltz For Debbie, Very Early, and Re: Person I Knew. Unfortunately, the wonderful recordings of these classic tunes are not to be found on this disc. They were the real attraction for a Running With Scissors soundtrack for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great sampling of 70s tuneage.......2006-10-12

Boy, this fun soundtrack from the interesting new movie is sure to evoke a lot of memories for anyone who had a radio or 8-track playing in the 1970s. Interesting diverse choices sure to bring it all back and the sound quality is particularly excellent...I assume they've been remastered. Great job.

The only track I skip is the Charlie Brown Christmas classic "O Tannenbaum." The holiday affiliation is impossible to ignore and disrupts the nostalgia of the other songs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Why?.......2006-06-01

This review could be aimed at a lot of bands, but this had the misfortune of coming on my CD player right after X-Ray Spex. The Checkers play catchy inoffensive girl-fronted punk rock, not too different from the aforementioned legends. Only they lack the attitude, enthusiasm, saxophone and overall creativity. What you're left with is catchy pop-punk songs. There's nothing particularly wrong with any part, the singer sings well, the songs aren't bad, but everything is overdone and trite. After a few songs about love, halfway into the album they're singing about how rebellious and rude they are. No you're not! These guys sound like they play punk rock because, "I don't know, it's easy".
