Norwegian Tales of Enchantment

Norwegian Tales of Enchantment

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile
Long ago in Norway, children sometimes fell victim to the Toothache Troll. Such happened to Margot, who spent dark winter days listening to her grandmother's stories, but not to her admonitions about tooth care. In this enchanting CD, tales of deception and danger, of trolls and "hulders," and of the "Nøkk" that lures children to his lake-bottom den are cleverly interwoven with vocal and instrumental music. Narrator Judith Simundson provides a rich texture of spoken word, songs, and sounds, as well as performances on the Norwegian folk harp and medieval lyre, and a synthesizer. Loretta Kelley adds frequent threads of Hardanger fiddle music to complete a truly inspired production of the folklore of long ago Norway. Product Description
Crossing over into the land of long ago and far away, the listener discovers enchantment-a time peopled with hidden creatures so like ourselves.

These "hulder" trolls look like us, work and live in the same way we do. But they usually have a tail-long, like a cow's tail. Embarrassing. Some hulders can be threatening. Other hulders may be honorable, fair and loving. Just like us. In them we find the best and worst of our own human qualities.

Encountering mythic hulders in stories such as these can bring us to question who is the stranger, the foreigner, the "other" person? Who is inside our circle of friends? Who can be trusted? Who will be loyal? Who is outside, excluded? What are true human qualities? --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Maybe you are just a lucky kid whose parent or doting relative made this a gift to you and thereby included you in the gathering of spellbound children around the skirts of the Norwegian grandmother spinning her tales. Perhaps you are a grown-up who simply delights in the display of real vocal talent. If you are really fortunate, you have a little of the wonder of both. In any case, this CD will not disappoint. Simundson's talented voice enlivens an astonishing range of characters as the grandmother unfolds her stories inspired by Norwegian folklore. By agile modulation of her voice, Simundson is able to keep at least three distinct and believable personalities in the air at once, with nary a bobble. While not always central to the story, the inclusion of snippets of the artist's accomplished singing voice is welcome lagniappe. The target audience is youngsters, but those who are young only at heart will also be drawn into that enraptured circle at "Grandmama's" knee. We hope that Simundson goes to the wellspring of her creativity again and soon!
