NOX ARCANA THE ULTIMATE MOODLIFTER.......2007-06-27
Vampire country.......2007-05-10
But when listening to Nox Arcana's "Transylvania," all I could think of was Bram Stoker's quintessential vampire, and the hauntingly creepy atmosphere of the book. The band forms plenty of rich neoclassical tunes, around a hazy storyline about (what else?) vampires.
It opens with a creepy organ, some smooth violins sweeping up from behind. A deep voice intones, "Darkness descends upon the land, wrap the world in night's black embrace... the restless dead stir within their ancient tombs, and creatures born of shadow rise to quench their savage hunger..." Imagine Bela Lugosi rising from a coffin.
It's followed up by some warmup songs -- the darkly enticing "Voyage," which expands out into an epic, eerie sweep, and the ghostly piano of "Gossamer Mist." The songs that follow are just as richly imagined -- ghostly fast-paced strings, magnificently dark organ and grim gypsy music, laced with church bells, shimmering vocals and ghostly little breezes.
Listening to "Transylvania" is like walking slowly through a cobwebbed, shadowy castle, and listening to Dracula playing a pipe organ in a dusty ballroom, with his brides singing accompaniment. It's not too hard to imagine that you're Jonathan Harker, after hearing songs like "Echoes From the Crypt."
Their music is an lush dusty tapesty of gothic instrumentation. Rich, hollow organ, shimmering harp, strings both windy and rapid, fast-moving percussion, a delicate piano, and some dark shimmers of keyboard all blend together into haunting slow-turning melodies. And as if that weren't good enough, they sprinkle the music with the flutter of bat wings, church bells, ghostly murmurs, and delicate music-box tinkles.
Fortunately Nox Arcana doesn't wreck all this eerie atmosphere with typical singing. Instead we get the occasional deep-voiced intonations, sort of like the introduction. And there are some delicate female vocals -- they murmur softly one minute, only to rise into echoing, wordless solos the next. It's absolutely stunning.
Nox Arcana's "Transylvania" does a brilliant job of capturing the ideal vampire-gothic atmosphere -- creepy and beautifully refined, with no kitschiness. The ideal soundtrack to Bram Stoker's classic (not to mention Halloween).
This soundtrack drains your blood dry, it's that awsome!.......2007-01-28

Eerie and dark music for the soul.......2007-03-08
This was the first album I got from them and I want all the others too because I'm hooked now. They recently re-released their early works under the title OUT OF THE DARKNESS. Also, check out VAMPYRE and GATES OF DELIRIUM.
Whether you're the Goth type or a casual fan wanting some cool music to set the ambiance at a party, 13th HOUR is an awesome symphonic horror album.

Another Dungeon Master's opinion.......2005-05-17
As far as it's application to a game situation - I have to say this is the best fantasy RPG soundtrack I've ever heard (that seems to be the general consensus from the other DMs I've talked to on the convention circuit). The other soundtrack attempts before this one really pale in comparison in my opinion.
When I have the time, I like to go through all of my soundtracks and piece together a custom soundtracks for my games. This disc mixed with some Conan and any of the LOTR scores makes for a powerful combo.
More than often I don't have the time to devote to that. I'm pleased to say that in every session where I've JUST played this disc in the background, it's worked very well. A bit on the dark side but for a dungeon crawl I can think of no better music.
The coolest Gaming and Riding.......2005-01-21
So all in all This is One of the few great buys that i have loved right off the bat.
I hope you enjoy it as well.
A GameMaster's Review.......2004-10-12
My favorite tracks are the two `bonus' tracks, Ruins of Bone Hill and City of Sails.
The quality of this music (if you don't mind that it's synthesized and can appreciate this sort of thing) is a 4/5, which is a fairly high rating from me.
But as far as this music can be applied to roleplaying is a 2/5 at best...
Here's the problems:
1) The music all seems to have the dark/eerie flavor that seems to be the staple of Midnight Syndicate. This severely limits the themes, moods, and instrument sets that were used. The only exception is City of Sails. While this does not detract from the quality of the music itself, it would still be nice to have more variety in a collection that is supposedly `official roleplaying music'.
2) I rarely found that the intended setting for each track actually suited the music, but the sound effects that were included made it unusable for anything else.
For example, Beasts of the Borderland seemed to me to be a great track for an army on the march, until I started hearing strange `beast' noises that seemed out of place.
3) Speaking of out of place sound effects, I found that many of the sound effects were ambiguous, unfulfilling, or outright mood-spoiling.
For example, in both Skirmish and Final Confrontation, you hear the `clash of swords' at certain times. However, these `swords' sound like pieces of tin slapping against one another with minimal force rather than actual swords. Who uses tin swords? Besides, not all `skirmishes' in roleplaying actually involve swords...
Side Note: Many portions of the melodies were familiar and some outright recognizable as being nearly identical to some of those used in older console RPGs. Perhaps it was from such games that they drew their inspiration. It would have to be a very big coincidence otherwise.
If you are a roleplayer and/or enjoy background music and aren't penny pinching or if you are a Midnight Syndicate fan, then you will probably want to buy this anyway. But I would not recommend this collection to anyone else.
Midnight Syndicate Critique.......2004-09-22
Only a gamer can make a class act sound track........2004-08-17
Once again it is a great feeling seeing another home grown product from the Midnight Syndicate. After all they started as gamers and have not forgotten their roots.
See them in person at their booth every Dragon Con in Atlanta Georgia.

Martha Stewart's sonic spookathon bodes well for her new alliance with Rhino Records. The 40-minute, single-track CD steals the Halloween thunder from tired, hokey hits such as "The Monster Mash" and leaves you scratching your head over why such a masterful menagerie of menacing sounds didn't hit the market sooner. Trick-or-treaters of timid stock will want to steer clear of doorsteps fraught with Stewart's frightful cacophony. From the unmistakable scrape of knives being sharpened to the rattling clang of rusty chains, what's here is perfect for goose bumps. A laugh so sinister that it could only issue from the larynx of a lunatic comes near a witchy cackle, howling winds, thumping human heartbeats, and the hair-raising rustling of branches. This is not for scaredy cats (nor for most kids under 6), but it's apt to play a sizable part in serving up a well-deserved scare to those in search of an authentic case of Halloween creeps. That's not to say this record will suit the needs of every Halloween host, though. The mix of movie-quality sounds isn't varied enough to keep from getting monotonous at parties, so it makes most sense to play this during high-traffic, quick-stop scenarios, such as candy dispersal to a steady stream of neighborhood ghouls. As a bonus, the indefatigable Stewart includes a booklet of Halloween how-to instructions, putting perfect caramel apples and just-so pumpkin-carving parties within crafty revelers' reach. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
Pretty good.......2005-10-27
Wind, owls, witch/monster voices...not bad. Understated. If you'd rather not have sci-fi/alien sounds in the background of your gothic-themed home, this is perfect. Production value is high and it's less than $10.
Very dissapointed.......2005-09-11
Chains, moans, and spooky laughs... then more chains, moans and spooky laughs. Very dissapointing.
Texas reviewer's two stars was too kind........2003-10-28
First of all, this is the most boring, i.e. non-scary, Halloween album I've ever heard. Secondly--and most "fatally"--not only is this repetitous, as the Texas reviewer pointed out; but it's actually nothing more than a four-minute recording "looped," i.e. repeated, ten times! Even the most unattentive listener should be able to pick up on this by no later than the third repetition. But even if they released the four-minute recording as a cheap CD single, and instructed you to just put your CD player on "repeat," it would still be a rip off that cannot be redeemed by Martha's caramel apple recipe included in the CD booklet. This is a small, but glaring, example of American commercialism at its "finest." This CD should be included as evidence at Martha's insider trading trial as a small-but-glaring example of the dishonest, money-grubbing, side of her.
Just like Martha.......2003-09-28
Big Let-Down.......2003-09-10
and 2. as another reviewer pointed out, this CD doesn't tell a story and take you from one scene to the next (because it's ONLY ONE SCENE- over & over). The reason I'm writing this review is in hopes that Martha with try again with a Vol.2. Martha, if you're out there: 60 minutes of many individual themes seemlessly segued (no looping!)

Great for the Halloween night!!!.......2007-01-12
Average collection of cover tunes........2005-10-13
By comparisson, this CD is a relative disappointment, featuring covers of spooky movie and TV themes.
Friday the 13th gets butchered the worst, with Exorcist following close behind, primarily by being about a minute to long, and the Twilight Zone is way too funky.
Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street fare the best, followed by Jaws and X-files. The rest are tributes to mediocrity.
For Wal-Mart's price of under four dollars, it's a decent deal, but I certainly couldn't recommend spending any more than that for it.
Not bad for the price.......2005-02-16
Blah!.......2003-08-11
Others sound like MIDI tracks burned to CD. With such a good lineup of movies (sans X-Files), I was thoroughly disappointed at how "synthy" it sounds.

Wonderful earlier works.......2007-07-11

This was officially my first Midnight Syndicate CD....Life hasn't been the same since..........2007-02-02
That night, I didn't want to sleep. I wanted to keep listening to my new CDs as many times possible. I had never heard anything like this in my life. Before exhaustion took over I told myself I must not let the man selling these wonderful CDs get away without selling me the other two he had available! All I knew was, that I was slapped by so much inspiration that it literally hurt. Something long lost and dead inside me was reborn the night before. I saw so many images that needed to be created as a result of listening to this music. Midnight Syndicate became my instant muse. Soundtrack for the Imagination Indeed!
This review has little to say about particular tracks, but rather the over all emotion of experiencing this band's music for the first time in my own home. The peace I felt(despite the dark nature of the music). The mental images of my own yard haunt that hit me randomly in an almost *Field of Dreams* way so entangled that I had to built it to put the pieces together. Not to mention the images that came to me to simply put to canvas. I hadn't had ANY thing like this in my life that moved me to be more creative in my own life. I am thankful for this band and I will forever be dedicated to it. Thank you Ed and Gavin....
Realm of Goth.......2006-11-29
"Realm of Shadows" (2000) is Midnight Syndicate's second dose of "haunting orchestrations and sinister sound effects (creating) a dark, gothic soundscape." Having purchased all of their CDs (twice - for work and personal use) and using their music (with their permission, of course) as soundtracks for our local Halloween haunted attractions, I can honestly say that I will always be anticipating their next release.
As with "Born of the Night" (see my review), the production quality of this CD was outstanding. The music is stirring and the sound effects are realistic. The raven calls in track #9 "Ravens Hollow," the synthesized strings in track #12 "Spectral Mist," and the creaking timbers in track #20 "Harbored Souls" are particularly noteworthy. I actually prefer Syndicate's limited use of vocal effects, which normally come off as "cheesy" attempts to sound creepy. And once again, the bell tones in track #13 "Soliloquy" and track #21 "Eclipse" should have been digitally sampled instead of using tubular bells.
There are 21 selections totaling a little more than 52 minutes of music. Most of the tracks would have benefited from lengthening and building upon the base music and effects- they left me wanting more. The best tracks on this CD are #9 "Raven's Hollow," #10 "Beyond the Gates," #15 "Serpent's Lair," #19 "Witching Hour," and #20 "Harbored Souls."
As with their previous CD, this music begs to be played on a high-quality sound system, preferably one with some kick-butt subwoofers and enough power to handle this CD's wide dynamic range. Otherwise, listen with care on less-capable systems before you crank up the volume.
A beautifully crafted piece, both chilling and inspiring.......2005-04-20
A must have for those who want a chill with a little story in the mix.
