An excellent intro to one of the greatest comics of our time. Classic monologues on this CD include "Death from Above," "Not an Artist," and "Child Abuse"--all of which are available exclusively on this CD.

Highly recommended. The kids will love it.

The Funniest Comedian.......2002-06-05

Doug Stanhope is literally the funniest comedian right now. If there ever is any doubt about what I'm saying, buy this CD and the other CDs that Doug has released. The comedy landscape is very thin right now and Doug is very specific and truthful about the topics that he covers---if you like your comedy between the eyes and not spoonfed to you like most of the other comics out there touring comedy clubs nationwide, this and all the other CDs by Doug Stanhope is just what you need!

My own opinion...........2000-06-07

The Great White Stanhope was my first CD done through UproarRecords and was, if nothing else, a good learning experience in notletting other people have all the say. I was not involved in any part of the production of this CD beyond telling the jokes to sparse crowds in Reno. The editing, selection of material, and final cover art were all done without my final o.k. and suffered as a result. I am far too rushed and gasping making the album a little overbearing for the living room. I made "Sicko" basically to replace this album, hence the overlapping of material. Although I don't care for The Great White Stanhope, it's still got my name on it so...5 stars.

Doug Stanhope is the best young comic today. He doesn't do feminine-hygiene-commercial or airline-food jokes. He talks about his life, such as getting robbed by a transvestite hooker or going to a bar where the entertainment is a woman spitting out chunks of banana (and not from her mouth). He's offensive with great timing and there's a depth to his material that rewards repeated listens. As for this album, it's not quite as good as his second one (which overlaps a fair amount of material). The second one is "Sicko"... This one is still wonderful, though. It's the kind of album you share with friends and find yourself quoting material to each other. Very profane. I'd compare him to the wit of Bill Hicks with the obscenity of Sam Kinison. I got "Sicko" at one of his shows but he says he no longer sells "Great White Stanhope" so your only chance to get this fantastic comedy album is through Amazon. Why only four stars? I've seen him a dozen times in concert and I know he can do better.
