1 out of 5 stars This CD deserves No Respect!!!.......2002-08-17

I am a tremendous Rodney Dangerfield fan, so it hurts me to have to say the truth about this CD.
I was looking forward to some classic Rodney Dangerfield material. What I got was unfunny and poorly recorded.
It's Rodney before he tapped the well of his comic genius. The material is almost there at times, but his delivery is amateurish compared to what he eventually came to do. It's a shame because the man is so much greater than what this product shows. Avoid this CD. Buy "No Respect". It's also a live recording, but that's where the comparison ends. "No Respect" is consistently funny even after many, many listenings and the recording is much better than this very disappointing CD.

4 out of 5 stars great comedy, bad sound.......2002-04-16

Rodney is by far one of the funniest men ever to grace a stage, and this CD represents his humor almost perfectly. I say almost because the sound is of some of the worst I have ever heard. I've missed at least 8 or 9 punchlines because of the bad sound. Granted its live, but still. Other than the bad sound this is a great CD. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Very imaginative, and funny..........1999-11-08

Here is an artist who can laugh the socks off your feet.I have heard "What's In A Name" on cassette and it is very well, and imaginative, as well as funny.

5 out of 5 stars Rodney Dangerfield is this century's Jane Austen.......1999-04-12

What if one day you woke up and realized that there was no Rodney Dangerfield? That is the question that Brian Gilmore posed to me the other day. I replied that I could not imagine a world without him, and that this cd proves why that is. A must listen!

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Rodney.......1999-02-06

"What's in a Name" is a perfect taste of Rodney's early years in the nightclub scene. You can even hear glasses hitting glasses and other various club noises in the background. He's a little toned down, but you still get tons of his trademark "I Don't Get No Respect" jokes. If you want to hear some of Rodney's greatest jokes before they were really famous and you don't want to spend a lot of money, this is the CD for you. I'm really happy my friend, Kevin McCarthy bought it for me.

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars "Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-22

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars scadalise my name.......2004-10-29

this isn't that good specially after hearing William Warfeild sing it. You can find him at www.wlym.com

2 out of 5 stars Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

5 out of 5 stars An opera that deserves consideration by a major company.......2003-10-04

I became familiar with this recording of the "The Crucible" back in the 60's when it was available on the old CRI label. It was an exciting piece then and it remains one now. It has been a puzzle to me why such an opera has not been taken up and presented regularly by major companies. The music is appealing--and frequently more than that; the drama is potent and never fails to captivate; it offers wonderful opportunites to a cast of singing actors. So what's the problem?! Granted some of the liberties taken with the Arthur Miller text render certain moments dramatically unclear and the Gershwinesque strains that accompany the slave Tituba's character are certainly a mistake. Still, the work as a whole is an exciting one. Hightlights abound, with the whole of the last act being especially moving.

This is still the only recording available and, overall, it is excellent. The leads perfectly embody the roles of John and Elizabeth Proctor, while the balance of the cast, a few vocal duds notwithstanding, competently fill in the many character roles.

The CD sound is very good and far superior to my old vinyl disks.

If you've never heard "The Crucible," give this recording a chance. It is well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring majesty!.......2001-12-19

This performance is a gem. Just the soaring majesty of Frances Bible is well worth the experience. What a sadly underrated artist. The final duet with Bible and Ludgin is a lesson in passionate, searing drama and full-out singing.

3 out of 5 stars a favorite opera with an old and inconsistent performance.......1999-03-23

I had the privilege of being part of a cast of this opera at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the late 70's, directed by the avuncular Herbert Wildeboor (since deceased). I've always loved the 7/8 hymn at the end of the first act. However, this performance is very uneven, including generally unfortunate singing by female leads, and bad acting (at least) by the person singing Reverend Parris. Reverend Hale and John Proctor are consistently good. And the orchestra parts, very demanding, are well handled. It astounds me that there is no new recording in all these years. I've since seen it done in Pittsburgh and know it's being done somewhere on the West Coast. While Mr. Ward's music is considered cliche by some, I prefer it much to, for example, Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe. Perhaps my affection for it is due to having the opportunity to perform it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tanya's early classics.......2002-07-05

With two important bonus tracks (Delta Dawn and Love's the Answer, both from Tanya's debut album) added to Tanya's second and third Columbia albums, this is a far stronger collection than any Greatest hits album from Sony/Columbia. The only significant omission is Jamestown Ferry.

Against that, there are many excellent album tracks, including Tanya's covers of Teddy Bear song, Pass me by, Let me be there, Bed of roses and Why me lord - but this collection is particularly interesting for all the original songs included, many of them thought-provoking, none more so than the opening What's your mama's name?, which asks a child about an unknown father.

Although it's many years since I heard the original albums (I used to have all her Columbia vinyl LP's), Collectables chose wisely in compiling this CD. Tanya's debut was wonderful, but the two LP's that followed it were even better.

This is classic traditional country music. Tanya's voice (a sort of country Tina Turner, if you see what I mean) may not appeal to everybody, but if you like the voice and you like traditional country, this will you suit you ideally.

4 out of 5 stars Early Tanya At Her Best.......2000-07-08

A prior review states all these songs were on earlier albums. This is incorrect. These are two original albums..the second and third of her career. Both contain some of the earliest hits that established her as a force in Country Music. What's Your Mama's Name became her first #1 single. Blood Red and Goin' Down is a classic, Would You Lay With Me also a classic. These were recorded at ages 14 and 15 and both CD's showcase the voice that was once called "An American Dream." For me, the real reason to buy this double cd is that between the two there are nine songs that do NOT appear on any other Tanya CD. They, until now, could only be heard if you had the original vinyl albums. Four of the songs alone are worth the price. Those being.. California Cotton Fields, Old Dan Tucker's Daughter, What If We Were Running Out Of Love and my personal favorite.. The Baptism Of Jesse Taylor. This is early seventies country at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Tanya Tucker:What's Your Mama's Name/Would You Lay With Me.........2000-06-18

I think this is a great album for anyone who likes TANYA TUCKER. It has songs from her early years that you wouldn't have heard on the radio. All the songs were on eariler albums. They are great songs that shows the range she has in her voice....This is a must for the Tanya fan. ENJOY.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Historically important choral music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-05-25

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD presents 20th Century choral arrangements of music from the African American spiritual tradition rooted in spirituals and gospels, including Harry T. Burleigh's "My Lord, What a Mornin'" (1929), "Walk Together Children" (William Henry Smith, 1937) and more contemporary composers like Sanford Moore's "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1993.)

There are excellent notes about the genre, however, in light of the historical significance of this music I'm surprised and disappointed to find no biographical information about the composers, not even birth and/or death dates, with this CD. I feel this is a crucial component in an "outreach" project like this, especially since most of these composers are not well known. Still I highly recommend it for the music alone.

The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Show.......2006-12-17

I have not seen this show, but after listening to it the whole way through, I want to very badly. The story is heartbreaking, and the music lends itself so well. At times it can be very spooky almost scary, and then other times as simplisticly beautiful as one could hope for. The music and lyrics are a bit repetitious, but this soundtrack tells the whole story. You can visualize everything going on. Its wonderful. I would suggest this to broadway collectors and just listners alike. Its also one that might be good for those who listen to books on tape, because you really do get the whole story, and it is stunningly beautiful. Favorite Song: "I Wonder What's Inside"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Collection of Russian Tenor Arias.......2005-09-19

When people think of the great tenors, the name Vladimir Grishko does not come as quickly to mind as say, Placido Domingo or Franco Corelli and a disc with arias from Mussorgsky's SOROCHINTSY FAIR or Rimsky Korsakov's May Night may not be as tantalizing as a disc with arias from AIDA, LA BOHEME, or FAUST. While I do not expect that this disc from Naxos will steer people away from the tried and true favorites, it will certainly show people the beauty of Russian opera. It will also introduce many people to a tenor who performs some beautiful arias from a type of opera known primarily for its great bass roles.

Two of the sets of arias are from Tchaikovsky's well known QUEEN OF SPADES and EUGENE ONEGIN. Grishko does a particularly fine job with the three arias from QUEEN OF SPADES, displaying the lyrical quality of his voice. He does a good job with the ONEGIN arias as well. Since the other operas with arias are not all that familiar to most non-Russian listeners (including me), it is hard to say whether he does an exceptional job or his interpretations are on the mark, but it is safe to assume that with the beauty of his voice, his pace and control, and overall delivery of the pieces that he does them justice as well. An added bonus to this disc are the orchestral excerpts including the well known Waltz and Polonaise from ONEGIN and the familiar Gopak from SOROCHINTSY FAIR, as well as lesser known works such as Arensky's overture to DREAM ON THE VOLGA and Rimsky Korsakov's overture to MAY NIGHT.

This disc will be a great addition to any opera recording library and fans of great tenors may discover a new rising star. Since he is young and his voice is in excellent shape, he may also be a name we hear with critical acclaim in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Another Naxos winner........2002-06-06

Serious music lovers with half an ear will be aware that Russian is one of the most suitable languages for singing. They'll also be aware that not many CDs come to hand which provide opportunities to hear it. All the more welcome therefore is this issue, from the adventurous and widely-distributed Naxos label, of a collection of tenor arias and orchestral excerpts from Russian operas.

The tenor arias are allocated to Vladimir Grishko, a Ukrainian tenor whose career seems to date from several prize winning appearances he made in competitions in 1989. He enunciates beautifully, his voice is free of wobble, and the tone is free and open throughout the whole range. All the orchestral forces are Russian and the orchestral items are conducted by Theodore Kuchar, who secures wider dynamic extremes that are usually heard in the popular Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky items.

A final word of praises is for the format of this CD. Juxtaposing orchestral and vocal excerpts from the selected Russian operas makes for 67 minutes of varied and well-programmed listening.
