HBO's Mafia masterpiece The Sopranos is a remarkable television series--it's witty, creative, and truly unique. The same praises could be sung for a show's soundtrack, an odd but fun mix of beats, classic rock, and--what else?--Mafia-staple Sinatra. A3's theme "Woke Up This Morning (Chosen One Mix)" gets things off to a lively start, as does bluesman R.L. Burnside's "It's Bad You Know" (from his Come On In remix album). Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" (from his Slow Train Coming album), Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper," and Elvis Costello's "Complicated Shadows" aren't tracks you'll hear on the local classic rock station, but they work perfectly here. And when was the last time you heard both Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul and Nick Lowe on TV? In short, a great, eclectic collection. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Soprano's music.......2007-07-27

This is a really good CD. I recognize all of the music that is on the CD as also being used in the series "The Sopranos".

4 out of 5 stars Soprano's soundtrack.......2007-07-13

I wanted a CD of the music from Soprano's, and this is the one to get. The original "theme song" is really cool to hear, and other songs are just as good.

5 out of 5 stars good music.......2007-06-27

Starting from the intro when tony is driving in north jersey with "woke up this morning" playing as the camera shows scenes from different towns i knew i was hooked to both the music and the show. Good mix of classic rock songs (the ones that arent totally burned out from the radio) and some newer beat oriented music. Surprisingly good soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Woke Up This Morning Comparison.......2007-05-24

When I first heard the song "Woke Up This Morning" on the Sopranos, I thought it must be a Dire Straits song. Does anyone else think there is a similarity?

3 out of 5 stars Not a great collection.......2007-05-16

We love the Sopranos, but were disappointed in this collection other than the theme song and one or two others.

The Sopranos have become considerably more than just the average psychically tortured New Jersey mob family next door. HBO's innovative, if distinctly murderous soap opera has become a modern cultural icon, one whose innovative pop music score is almost an equal supporting cast member. The term dizzying has been overused in describing strong soundtrack collections, but it just might not do this second volume of Sopranos music justice. Show creator David Chase, director Martin Bruestle, and executive producer Brad Grey are credited with this rich, cross-genre, multigenerational collection, but they tellingly thank a few score others. The contributions from usual suspect vets like Frank Sinatra, Dylan, Elvis Costello, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, the Kinks, Keith Richards (and the Stones), the Pretenders, and Ben E. King contain more than their fair share of musical and contextual surprises. But the collection's true appeal lies in its artistically oblique corners, which somehow embrace alt-rock (R&B tinged and straight up, courtesy of Pigeonhed and Cake, respectively), nouveau Aussie country (Kasey Chambers), traditional gospel and swampy blues (the Campbell Brothers with Katie Jackson, R.L. Burnside), Vivaldi (Cecilia Di Bartoli), and contemporary Neopolitan pop (Madreblu, Lorenzo Jovanotti). Even budding star Uncle Junior chimes in, with Dominic "Goldenthroat" Chianese lending a spare, heartfelt rendition of the traditional "Core'ngrato"; hang onto your kneecaps, 'N Sync! --Jerry McCulley

Bought as a gift for my dad, says he loves it!!! Great purchase deal on my part :-)

5 out of 5 stars Want More.......2007-04-03

I have both CD soundtracks from the HBO series "The Sopranos". What makes them so enjoyable is that they are very eclectic. If you had asked me before this series if I would enjoy listening to Frank Sinatra, my answer would have been a definite no. How wrong I was.
What I want to know is if and when they are going to release additional CD soundtracks. Does anybody know? The show has continued to include great music in every epidsode each season. The 2 CDs that have been released are like a wicked tease. I want more from the seasons that have come since the release of this 2nd CD.
The show itself is kind of the same, if you think about it. Just 13 episodes per season (1-5), which was expanded to 20 for season 6. But, also just 6 seasons altogether. It just leaves you wanting more. By far, one of the greatest drama series of all-time.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome collection for a Sopranos follower.......2006-10-31

If you've followed the series, and felt a compelling association with the characters and their charisma, you'll relive that joy and connection with the songs in this collection.

5 out of 5 stars If you like the sopranos , you're gonna love this ... .......2006-08-05

From song number 1 that's from the first episode of the third season , all troughout the whole disc it's an excellent group of songs with that unique taste of music from the sopranos.
Disc number 1 is a little less rock and more various kinds of music and Disc number 2 is a bit more rock and the last track with the dialogues that's just like putting the cherry on the sundea , it's great , like it says in the title , if you're a soprano fan you'll enjoy this 2 discs set a whole lot ... If you're a fan of the big-production inspirational pop numbers that sometimes run over the closing credits of hit movies, you'll love this soundtrack album for the feel-good TV series: there are 15 of them here. Despite a diverse range of artists--Celine Dion, Deana Carter, soft-R&B group Uncle Sam--the tracks and sentiments tend to run together after a while, but those looking for a fix of positivity won't argue. Bob Dylan fans note: the one moment of true grit on the disc is a previously unreleased alternate take of his "Dignity." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A Ray of Light on a cloudy day.......2005-07-03

This Touched By An Angel (TBAA) soundtrack is ab-soul-utely amazing. Combining the essence of music with the words of God, each song is delightfully pleasant and warming to the ears. It is a magnificent album, and songs from Wynonna Judd and Della Reese will just blow you away. I find the show very touching and comforting, and this music compliments that show. It is a touching cross between Dido and Richard Clayderman, and a must-have for anybody and everybody of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-03-08

I personally loved this album and it's helped me through some tough times as a teenager. One of my best friends commited suicide and no lie this c-d really did help me get through some of the things that I was going through it was very uplifting and very spiritual and I needed that at that point in time. The message in all of the songs is very well thought out and not just that but the songs are very catchy and addicting. Especially "Testify to love" which was sung by Wynonna in the 100th episode of Touched by An Angel. I'm still not which one was better this great song or that great episode. If you love the show buy this c-d and if you love this c-d watch the show.

5 out of 5 stars Very uplifting!.......2002-04-20

This is a great CD, and let me just say that I bought it for the Della Reese track alone. I love her singing, and I love her portryal of Tess on the show. She's an angel you don't want to mess with! I like Celine's track too. A very uplifting CD to listen to on those "down" days, especially when you're a burned out college student wondering if there is any hope for you ; )

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2007-06-03

As others have noted, the exclusion of Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" is ridiculous; It's not a 'Best Of' if one of the most iconic songs ever used in the show isn't included! There's plenty of other odd exclusions, too: Russ Ballard's "Voices", Honeymoon Suite's "Bad Attitude", and Terry Kath's "Tell Me" are the most notable songs absent from this release IMO, and I could have used any of them instead of Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited", George Thorogood's "Bad To The Bone", Autograph's "Turn Up The Radio" or Sheila E.'s "Glamourous Life". Are those good songs? Sure. But, they don't really come to mind when I think of Miami Vice, not to mention they're all over other 80's compilations and the radio. If we're going that route, at least include Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me".

Even lesser known songs from the show's run would have sufficed: Tommy Shaw's "Girls With Guns" and "Dangerous Game", both of which are excellent songs and difficult to find today. Ditto for The Nobodys "No Guarantees" (good luck finding that LP!). Speaking of rare, Miami Vice's own Don Johnson sang "Streetwise" for his "Heartbeat" album, but cut it from the LP. It's a good song, and was used season three's also-named "Streetwise". That would have been a great addition. Genesis' "Land of Confusion" used in the final episode, would have been great, as well.

But, even though this disc fails to truly be a "Best Of", it does feature some great tracks. Both of Glenn Frey's oferrings are true MV classics, as is Jackson Browne's "Lives In The Balance". Jan Hammer's instrumentals are cut to three tracks (couldn't have thrown the "New York Theme" or "Candy" in, huh?), but they give a good view of his genius. The MV themes are just as cool as ever, and "Crockett's Theme" is out and out awesome. Steve Jone's "Mercy" is as great as ever. The more mainstream tracks here that I didn't mention above, Tina Turner's "Better Be Good To Me" and Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is", actually work here, though again, why no "Voices"?

You'd be better off buying the official soundtrack and it's sequel (ignore the never-released-in-the-U.S. third soundtrack), as well as Jan Hammer's own "Best of Miami Vice" (cheap and easy to find, much more so that the complete collection) but this serves as a good introduction to MV's music, just not a definitve one. It's pretty obvious this was released to piggyback on the 2006 feature film version, and sadly it plays more like any 80's compilation album than an MV compilation album.

3 out of 5 stars Someone's Best of..........2007-03-30

As others have noted, this is 'a' Best of album, certainly not deeply indicative of five seasons of this 80s show.

Yes, In The Air Tonight, as used in the first season, is often cited as the epitomy of the Miami Vice aesthetic, or 'thing'. And it's missing, as are plenty of other songs. Jan Hammer is only represented by three tracks--two versions of the famous theme, and Crockett's Theme, a rare instrumental hit single. But what about the countless other tracks and cues? The three tracks off the original Miami Vice soundtrack album (white cover) alone are a better value than this, plus you get the Collins track and other 80s time capsule material (Grandmaster Flash, etc). This kind of Best of soundtrack CD is really becoming obsolete in the downloading era--there's nothing special on here you can't find elsewhere these days, one track at a time.

Meanwhile, the Complete Miami Vice 2CD set (all Jan Hammer) is out of print and stupidly expensive, but it's got all of the score. The songs...just go find a listing online or go through the excellent DVD boxes and go find what you need online. There's just not enough on here to do justice to so many slo-mo scenes of Don Johnson in pastels, gun drawn, in a climactic showdown with various Miami druglords and dirtbags.

3 out of 5 stars For beginners only.......2006-08-08

This compilation is better than previous attempts in capturing music, the memories, from key scenes. But as others also note, there are major omissions. Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight", obviously. And what "Vice" junkie could forget the memories evoked by "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits, "Cry" by Godley & Creme, "Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi, "Bad Attitude" by Honeymoon Suite, "Tell Me" by Terry Kath, or even Sheena Easton. Russ Ballard is hard to find anywhere.

Because individuals decide which "Vice" scenes, which music (from a huge cross-section of music from a five year time span during which Jan Hammer and Tim Truman, both magnificent, ran the show), mattered the most, no single collection will be definitive.

In the end, people are best off getting Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice: The Complete Collection" sountrack compilation, and making one's own "hit" collection using song lists from the various "Miami Vice" web site.

4 out of 5 stars No Voices.......2006-08-01

The tracks in this album are real good, but like someone mentioned before no "In the air tonight", the song that made Miami Vice famous in the first place (besides the theme). One other song that is not on any of the Miami Vice soundtracks is a song titled Voices by Russ Ballard. This song was played in the Prodigal Son episodes when Crockett and Tubbs were on their way in the speedboat to the Bahamas to arrest Caldarone. Great song but always omitted from any soundtrack.

Album Description

Freaks and Geeks is one of the most lavishly praised TV shows of all time. One essential ingredient to its success was the ingenious use of music. The Freaks And Geeks Original Soundtrack and Score CD includes some of the best anthems of the day by The Who, Joan Jett, Styx, and Rush and ties them together with the most memorable portions of Michael Andrews' score. As a special treat to fans, it also includes performances by cast members, including Nick's cringe-worthy but hilarious ode to Lindsay, "Lady L." This is one CD no Freaks And Geeks fan should be without.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love the series, love the soundtrack.......2007-07-06

Love the series, love the soundtrack. Cute pieces from the actual show, not just a compilation of pop songs that were used. Oh, and it has the Lady L song!!

5 out of 5 stars A timeless exploration..........2005-11-08

Freaks & Geeks represents a timeless exploration into...

Oh, what the heck am I saying?! This show was flat-out funny, extremely touching and packed with some of the generation's best tunes. But even the show's creators have said that the best part of the series is each song woven into the show's intricate patchwork of natural hilarity - making this, my friends, one of the most rewarding soundtracks around.

Older listeners may recall their own experiences with songs like "Look Sharp!", "Come Sail Away" and "The Spirit of Radio."

But younger ones like myself will forever remember the tunes as they relate to the painfully awkward experiences of Sam and Lindsay Weir - debuting the Perisian nightsuit, suffering that first dance and reluctantly dropping more dry ice in the bucket.

(Or, if you've caught the deleted scenes, "Come Sail Away" may remind you of something completely different!)

Original score numbers by Michael Andrews tie all tracks together in an audible representation of all 18 episodes. And not only does this CD have a whopping 25 tracks, but the last four riff straight off the show! For those of us who finished the season and wanted more, THIS is what we wanted.

Freaks & Geeks will live on forever because of its fans, who defy cancellation to support the immensely talented creators and cast. If you enjoyed the stellar acting of John Daley - the show's young "Sam Weir," who today stars in FOX's "Kitchen Confidential" - we'd love to see you in our Yahoo! Groups discussion club, Fans of Daley.

Nothing is off-limits, including this amazing soundtrack. Just one listen merits a completely different series-watching experience.

Classic music helped make the series what it is. I highly recommend you don't own one without the other.

3 out of 5 stars This is a good soundtrack to a great show..........2005-05-12

This is a good soundtrack to a great show. It includes the hits from the show that you expect, such as Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" and Rush's "The Spirit of Radio". There is also a really good current song called "Dumb as a Crayon" by a band called The Leaving Trains. Also included is the guidance counselor doing a hilarious version of "I'm Eighteen" as well as "Up On Cripple Creek". But what kept me from really liking this CD are the instrumental songs in between the hits. It was all TV score written and performed by the same guy. Not that the music was bad, but it ruins the flow of the CD.

A very important component to the quality of the Freaks and Geeks program was how they incorporated the music. Music used correctly with film is so powerful. This comes from the CD liner notes...

"Think about the scene where Bill Haverchuck comes home in lonely latchkey style and finds solace watching Garry Shandling on Dinah! We don't hear Shandling, instead we hear The Who's "I'm One"...the perfect statement of Bill's isolation and wounded pride. "No Language in Our Lungs" from XTC offers the perfect musical background for being picked last in gym class. And who better than Joe Jackson, a still undervalued skinny-tie rock god, to play as Sam Weir tries to "Look Sharp!" in his Parisian nightsuit?"

Lastly, the liner notes list Mr. Rosso's (guidance) musical notations for each song. Pretty funny stuff such as "And maybe next time Joan Jett is counting off those first rockin' eight beats, she'll go the extra two and after counting to ten, realize she's not that angry after all!"

A nice plus would have been some classic dialogue from the show, but no such luck.

5 out of 5 stars Freaks and Geeks rocks!!.......2005-04-08

What can i say. Freaks and geeks is one of the best tv shows ever made! i cant belive they canceled if after one series they were crazy!. well this soundtrack is awesome i recomend it!

4 out of 5 stars A nice token from the show, but not a great album..........2004-11-25

I basically bought this album because I love "Freaks & Geeks." And as much as I appreciate having Mr. Rosso singing Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" and Millie and Nick harmonizing on "Jesus Is Just Alright" on an album, I can only rate this album as good rather than great. As a soundtrack, this album works pretty well in capturing the spirit of the show: its humor, sensitivity and intelligence. However, I get bogged down in the score, which I think sounds a little too much like a television score, and wish that more of the '70s and '80s songs had been incorporated.

4 out of 5 stars Great Chillout Comp... but PRICEY!!!.......2005-02-05

This was a great Chillout compilation at the time. Trademarked in 1999, I believe this could be the first of the series: "The Chillout Album", one of TelStar' releases into the market before it became saturated with MOS rip-offs. It isn't to be confused with "The Chillout Room" or "The Chillout Mix", either, as the "Mix" was released by Virgin, the other by... I don't remember.

How does it stack up? Pretty darn well! Mind you, the 'recent' tracks at the time were from 1998-1997, around then. But the wide aray of cuts come from many different time periods. One of those stand-out tracks being the title theme to Steve McQueen's "Bullitt", as done by soundtrack maestro Lalo Schifrin. I dig it - even though it's close to 40 years old! Then you have tracks from the nineties too, like a classic Nightmares on Wax cut, "Nights Interlude". Too bad though - "NOW" was grossly overplayed in the chillout era. The All Seeing I kicks in too with a nice remake of "Beat Goes On". I remember the intro to the remake on some commercial (forget what it was) in England back in 98' too. And this is just CD1. CD2 is actually the one I prefer. It's got a wide range of tracks! David Holme's "Rodney Yates" is a mellowed out cut with a nice undertone to it while Etienne De Crecy's popular (at least in the 90's) "Prix Choc" kicks it up next. But the gems, IMO, are Rae & Christian's soulful "Spellbound", which just has such a bounce to the R&B beat to it, how can you not bob your head? The elusive and underated Ballistic Brother's come in with an afrocentric 'made for vinyl' cut, "Blacker". It's preceeded by "The Jackal", a song that Nathan Haines "Squire for Hire" made me think of.

I like this double disc set, but would have to say to err on the side of caution in deciding on buying it because it's a bit dated, and IMO way overpriced. While I like the cuts, I don't think it warrants the price-tag it has here... and I got this one, yes, a good 5 or 6 years ago. Then not all of the songs got me either... "The Gift" was chopped in size, and of all Moloko songs, why "Fun for Me", which is IMO one of their worst? But still, there are several tracks here that I've enjoyed. If you dig this, and price isn't an issue, then be sure to check out the other 4 releases from the series that came out afterwards. But I'd recommend the Ultra series as a better priced alternative... although one difference between this and that one is that the Ultra series is mixed while this one is not.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you don't like techno................2002-07-20

you'll like this. Some songs you'll know - i.e., Praise you by Fat Boy Slim - and some you won't, but they'll all stick in your head, and before you know it, you'll find that it's fun, worthwhile music. Great background tunes to have on while at work - very peppy and soothing at once. Also great to have on in the car on a Friday night. Yes, the price is a bit much, but the songs and the way they're mixed are well worth it. It's a hard to find disc, which should tell you something right there. Now just go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars a stellar compilation..........2000-07-19

Compilations are a mixed bag. You've got your "best of.." albums and then you've got you mixed-artist albums (generally with a theme attached). The worst are obviously those that are mostly filler if not all filler and the best, well, the best realize a variety of styles while not sacrificing its original concept....

This critique is for the whole Chillout series and it is worth purchasing.

Now to say that this album is "ambient" would be false for it not entirely ambient (however, it is indeed atmospheric). A better descriptive word, perhaps, would be "nightime"... this two-CD set consists of luscious, mellow grooves that are non-obtrusive (i.e. you can play it at party where it sets the mood rather than disrupts it) and moving (i.e. you'll catch yourself bobbing your head if you're not careful).

The mix is downright interesting. It is only here you'll find the Bullitt theme song and Bjork together.

The whole series is great...

5 out of 5 stars Worth It.......2000-07-10

This CD became an instant favorite with the variety of music it offers. I've enjoyed listening to as I drive, work and relax at home. Despite it's heavy price tag, each song is unique enough to make it all worthwile. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2000-06-24

Truly and outstanding mix; such a wide selection of tracks that it itself cannot be classified.

3 out of 5 stars I did?.......2004-03-31

With a title like "Heard It On The Radio", one might expect to find a majority of songs that one once heard on the radio. Well let me tell ya something. That's not exactly the case here. I lived and breathed radio in the 80's and it wasn't until the formats became so predictable that I gave up on traditional FM. That said, I was able to recognize only five of these songs, and that's stretching it some. She Looks a Lot Like You, Hot Cherie, 10-9-8, No More Lies, and Dreams all struck me as familiar, some more than others. The rest, while occasionally interesting, left me shaking my head wondering where they might have been heard before. All in all, this is a great concept and it's too bad that Renaissance Records no longer exists because I'd keep buying them as long as they kept releasing them. You never know what you might find.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Collection, But Rather Obscure Songs.......2002-12-28

As the title of the review indicates, the songs on this collection are OK and may jog a fond memory here and there. However, as "lost hits" compilations go, the tunes here are relatively remote, and may only be of interest to collectors. Perhaps the highlight of the package is listening to Randy Bachman's Ironhorse on "Sweet Lui-Louise" totally thieve the guitar riff and the stutter from BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet".

3 out of 5 stars Some Radio!.......1999-10-14

I don't know what radio someone was supposed to hear this stuff on, but I only managed about to catch about three of these on my little clock radio. It's nice to get some of these on CD - "10-9-8", "She Looks a Lot Like You" and the so-bad-it's-good "Rock School". The main problem with this collection is its utter un-memorability - two hours after listening, you can't remember how most of these songs go. A pleasant listen, though.

I love this soundtrack because that was the year or time period for me. I grew up watching "All That" and I miss the skits. My favorite skit is the "Lemonade Skit" featuring "TLC". TLC is my favorite girl even in 2006, they had so much fun during those years.

yes this soundtrack is good and it is brings back memories of the show because of the hilarious skits. Definite 5 star review.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Way You Remember Them.......2007-01-14

If you like the scores for western films or TV shows, you will love this collection. They sound just the way you remember them, and the City of Prague Philharmonic do a terrific job. It's a large collection, and you may not necessarily like each of the cuts. Beware, though: There are many great ones, and some of them will get stuck roaming around in your brain!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled by the Cover.......2006-12-14

This is a very good album. I picked it up last weekend. There are 2 CDs in this album. I really liked some of the performances even better than previous releases. The Comancheros, The Scalphunters, For A Few Dollars More, Hang 'em High and Duck,You Sucker all sound fantastic. The Big Country, Villa Rides and High Caparral ara also very good. For the price you get a lot of good Western music from movies and TV.

5 out of 5 stars MAKES ME WANT TO SEE WESTERNS AGAIN.......2006-07-04

Most of these 2cds collections have just about the same tunes with a few exceptions.I would have included the theme from THE VIRGINIAN tv series.Nevertheless, what we have here is a superb collection of western themes that displays different moods. The MORRICONE tunes are so well known that we take them for granted.I had forgotten that STAGECOACH had such a good score.Among my favorites are THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN,HOW THE WEST WAS WON and the wonderful JOHN DUNBAR THEME from DANCES WITH WOLVES.So get back in the saddle again and get this one. You'll want to see at least THE BIG VALLEY and BONANZA again. There is a mistake among the titles represented here on the AMAZON site. This is not a good reason enough for you to miss your rendez-vous with past heroes. After all, even AMAZON needs a sheriff to lead their staff of reviewers. The one mistake is that MCBAIN is not here,it's THE COMANCHEROS.Did i heard you say that they are both JOHN WAYNE films?
