A moving tribute to our need to WAKE UP and change... Whatever that needs to be changed ouside needs first to be changed from the inside...

3 out of 5 stars Not definitive: Selling Melissa short.......2007-07-08

Melissa Etheridge is, simply stated, one of the most important female artists of the last two decades. She not only made it as a woman rocking on her own terms, she also put her sexuality on the line and then made her personal battle with cancer into a public crusade. These qualities frame her as a person and are important markers of her integrity.

But more importantly, she has made some brilliant music with at least two five star albums. Both the debut and her breakthrough, "Yes I Am," are must-own records. Naturally, they are the two CD's from which the lion's share of "The Road Less Traveled" is culled; six of the 18 songs here. Add the six songs that are previously unreleased, and that leaves only six songs culled from the rest of Melissa's library.

The diference between this and the previous version is the addition of the Oscar winning "I Need To Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth." The CD booklet is gone to make it more environmentaly freindly and the plactic jewel box is replaced by a recycled paper shell with foam tray. While it changes the packaging, it doesn't change the fact that there are too many ommissions here to make it listener friendly.

This presents a problem. It leaves off such terrific popular favorites and singles. "Dance Without Sleeping," "Your Little Secret," "Breathe" and the entire contents of "Skin" wind up being neglected. That is not to say that "The Road Less Traveled" is a poor collection; it's just that it is not as thorough as it could have been.

As for the new material, it's all good stuff. Melissa's covers of Tom Petty's "Refugee" and (finally!) a studio version of Janis Jopin's "Piece Of My Heart" are, alone, worth the price of the disc. Her anthems of survival "This Is Not Goodbye" and "I Run For Life" are heartfelt and solid. Too bad the collection is a little too tame and not enough crazy. I am sure the inevitable double disc collection will eventually appear, but for now, "The Road Less Traveled" is a less than perfect primer.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars... Definitive overview of Mellisa Etheridge's career.......2007-07-02

Melissa Etheridge is one of the premier female singer-songwriters from this era, and after 8 studio albums, issued from 1988 to 2004, Melissa got a very deserved "Greatest Hits" treatment in 2005. Two years later, the album is reissued to include an unexpected development.

"Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled" (18 tracks, 76 min.) brings a terrific overview of Melissa's career. The set starts off with a nice new cover of the Tom Petty hit "Refugee". After that the set rolls chronologically. "The Way I Do" from her debut album is very typical of the "Etheridge sound": acoustic guitar driven rock-and-roll. I perseonally love that sound. 1993's "Yes I Am" album, arguably Melissa at her commercial peak, gets 3 tracks: "I'm The Only One", the beautiful "Come To My Window" (her biggest hit ever), and "If I Wanted To". Other highlights include "I Want To Come Over" and the new cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart".

The reissue comes with a new track, the excellent "I Need to Wake Up", which plays over the closing credits of the "Inconvenient Truth" documentary. The song went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song in the 2007 Oscars. Overall, this makes the compilation just that much better than the original 2005 compilation. If you were on the fence about getting this, go ahead and buy this, surely the definitive Melissa Etheridge compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Coming Back To Her Window.......2007-03-17

There are very few female singers that seem to show that their words come from the heart. While more of the artists are about the outside image like Jessica Simpson, Beyonce', and Kelly Clarkson, there are much fewer singer/songwriters that still sing with feeling and compassion. Melissa Etheridge is one of those who still has the drive and has definitely shown it the past few years. She had struggled and defeated her battle with breast cancer, and reclaimed herself as a defiant, down to Earth female performer. Her hits record which was released a few years ago, showed that she was good, but it didn't completely showcase her career definitively. Now that it has been re-issued, has it gotten any better?

Melissa Etheridge's 2007 re-released Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, spans her near 20 year career with 18 tracks that are bold, and defiant to her voice. The songs here have all been remastered nicely, and sound better than they were released a few years ago. Although not much has changed on this record as before. The album still includes a lot of great tracks including I Want To Come Over, Come To My Window, I Am The Only One, and Ain't It Heavy. The album also includes her adult contemporary hit I Run For Life, and a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Refugee. The only new addition in this reissuing is I Need To Wake Up, her Oscar-winning song from the Al Gore documentary, An Inconvient Truth. The song is very bold and speaks a clear message to life around us, and fits nicely in the package. Nevertheless, the album still overlooks a few great tracks like it did before such as Breathe, Your Little Secret, and her soulful song I Wanna Be In Love from her
album Skin.

Still, despte the record overlooking a few songs, Melissa Etheridge's Greatest Hits: The Road Less traveled isn't a bad record worth listening too, for anybody who doesn't own a Melissa Etheridge album. It is a little better than it was before. I still love listening to her music, and I hope she comes back with a new record soon. Even with all the stuff that is going on, many of us are still coming to her window for great music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great vocal warmup, especially of breath control, with unique syllabic exercises!.......2007-06-17

I am a piano teacher who also teaches voice, and this CD has been a lifesaver for me, it has helped improve problems with my voice students that
common popular exercises have failed to achieve. The breath control exercises especially have been an enormous help, and my students find them
not only challenging but fun as well. The warmup exercises are a little unique, bringing in tweet, hweet, and unique ways to improve sound production with exercises that combine air production with compression against the lips and teeth. The exercises as a whole help students with the lower register as well as the upper, and effectively improve power without yelling. A great program, I highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyment.......2007-05-20

I haven't had the opportunity to review it for myself. However, my niece in california was so excited to receive this. She said she's enjoying it. She's working on her vocals daily.

5 out of 5 stars great service.......2007-05-13

Came really quickly and just in time! I needed some help warming up for an early morning service I had to sing for and I was hoarse. this really helped.

4 out of 5 stars Good tool.......2007-05-12

I find this material very useful. The teacher makes it feel like you are in actual face to face voice lessons. Technically acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT INVESTMENT.......2007-03-09

IT COVERS THE BASICS AND THAT'S PERFECT FOR ME. IF YOU ARE MORE ADVANCED AND HAVE HAD PRIOR VOICE LESSONS YOU MAY FIND THIS TO BE TOO SIMPLE TECHNIQUES. I ENJOYED FOLLOWING THE EXERCISES AND REPATING THEM. I WILL DEFINATELY BUY THE NEXT VOLUME. [...]

Album Description

This collection covers Melissa Etheridge's 17-year career in 17 dynamic songs, including hits like "Come to My Window," "I Want to Come Over," and "Bring Me Some Water." It also includes four new recordings: her simmering take on Tom Petty's "Refugee"; a reprise of "Piece of My Heart," which wowed the world in her stunning Grammy Awards show performance this past February; an emotional and heartfelt original song called "This Is Not Goodbye"; and the brand-new "I Run for Life," an inspiring anthem for those who, like Etheridge, have had their lives impacted by breast cancer. Regarding its release, Etheridge says, "I always thought that a greatest hits album was something to aspire to. When you got to the point in your career where you could have one, you did something right."

Etheridge has recorded eight albums over the course of her career. She has won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance twice: for the song "Ain't It Heavy" in 1992, and "Come to My Window" in 1994. In 1996, she was honored with the prestigious ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award. The Kansas-born singer/songwriter has sold more than 30,000,000 records worldwide.

Fantastic CD. Melissa's voice is so incredible, the passion that she has with each track makes this a must have

4 out of 5 stars Melissa's Past Meets My Past.......2007-03-28

When I purchased this CD, I did so because Melissa sings a song very dear to my heart - I Run for Life. As an 11 year cancer survivor, I've never forgotten those with whom I shared the "dark" times with. The important thing that Melissa says and I believe is that we, as survivors, have to continue to represent those who have died, those like us who have survived and to support anyone in the future whose body is "darkened" by this disease. I'm with you Melissa... I run for life.

As I began listening to the entire CD, I heard songs from her past and some songs I had never heard before. All in all, I enjoy to this day listening to The Road Less Travelled, maybe that's because it is the road I usually take.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection and I Loved the new tunes!.......2007-03-28

There are several new songs on this album and they really do make it worth purchasing even if you own all of her other albums like I do. Sit back relax and enjoy. A wonderful collection from a fantastic artist.

5 out of 5 stars Melissa Rocks!.......2007-01-17

I am a huge fan of Melissa Etheridge. I love this cd. While none of the songs are new I feel that all of them come together to pull off a stellar Greatest Hits. Some of these songs I haven't heard before because I don't own all of Melissa's CDs yet but I will eventually. You won't be disappointed...this is a cd you can listen to over and over again and never get bored.

5 out of 5 stars Grabs you by the heart..........2007-01-14

Yes, she speaks to your heart, mind and soul. You can read between the lines, of her passionate relationships with lovers past, the hurt, the yearning, the pain of abandonment, the fire of love and jealousy. After her bout with Cancer, she wrote some very touching songs about this experience. All that she sings sounds true to the core of one's heart, it is what she means. Great rock sound, too! Go Melissa! She is the best!

Mindi has done it again - I love this CD just as much as I love her first!

3 out of 5 stars It's a nice album with repeats of her first album in most of her songs........2007-02-19

I'm a big Mindi Abair fan. The first time I heard her was when I was in my car waiting for my day to start at work. I changed the station to the jazz station and I was blown away. I didn't know the artist. And...yet I loved her sax playing so much that I was almost late for work trying to get the artist name. The announcer came on after the song was done and said Mindi Abair. I jotted her name on a piece of paper. Later that night when I got home, I order her first album and her third because I thought the sound was on either one of them. Besides I wanted to see what else she could do. I got those CDs and I popped the 1st CD in the CD player, and it blew me away. The CD itself was excellent! This last week, I popped the other CD in, her latest one....I heard the songs. It didn't impress me that much. Like all artist now pop and Jazz, their songs sound alike from one song to album over and over again. I did like a lot of the songs though. Her voice is nice. It doesn't impress me when she puts her voice as a sound bite. I like it when she sings the song though. It was still fun, but I hope the next one she gets out of the same routine over and over again. Be a little more like Kenny G than let's say some pop princess like Christina Aguilerra.

4 out of 5 stars Life Less Ordinary - Mindi Abair.......2006-12-13

This is the second purchase I have made of the music of this artist. As before, there is quite a bit of energy expressed in the music. Some how this recording seems a bit more forward and I have always wondered why the studios seem to do this to a female artist. This is an excellent artist and I really do enjoy her presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit!.......2006-11-13

Great CD, a must have for the sax lover. With her vocals and unique style, much more then just a sax CD.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for Mindi.......2006-11-10

Each succeeding CD released by Ms. Abair gets incresingly better and better. Just when I thought smooth jazz had reached its peak, Mindi comes along and releases another CD to exceed all expectations. Buy a copy of this CD, throw it into your player, and I guarantee you won't let it stop spinning until you have heard each song at least 5-6 times. Each and every song is peppy and upbeat, conveying that essential groove to it that Mindi expresses so well. You will not be disappointed with this latest release!

Yes, I was one of those kids: big, messy hair; black clothes; makeup on the weekends; surly demeanor with everyone but my friends. But my friends were legion. And what bonded us all? Goth music--dark, arty, dramatic, epic, apocalyptic. It gave us focus and refuge during those formative years. Now, it appears some of those kids have grown up and started working for Rhino. A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box hones in on the territory started by their expansive Left of the Dial box set and gives it a smear of red lipstick and a down-turned glance. And in usual Rhino fashion, it's lovingly designed (the slipcase is a faux-leather corset!), with an extensive booklet that will answer all of your questions about goth, and this box set in particular. It will be needed. One can already hear the cries of "What about...?," "Why that song?," and "Is that goth?" These questions are addressed and gotten out of the way in quick succession. Rhino has the cachet to pull together artists that wouldn't normally be part of such a box set, so they rightly concentrate on including the biggies (the Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy). Also present less well-known bands, such as Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, the March Violets, and the Virgin Prunes. What about the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Misfits, and Echo & the Bunnymen? Are they goth? Not strictly, but every goth I knew loved them. There's even an "instructional" essay for those new to the scene, and a cover of the Cure's "The Hanging Garden" by new-schoolers A.F.I. to bring in the uninitiated. Go on, break out those velvet vests and pointy boots and put this on--it's still amazingly vibrant stuff. --Robert Arambel

5 out of 5 stars Goth primer.......2007-03-13

THIS IS A GREAT STARTING POINT FOR ANYONE JUST DISCOVERING "GOTH". THE LINER NOTES ABND SHORT BACK STORIES OF EACH SONG ARE INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE. WELL DONE ALL AROUND.

3 out of 5 stars Not all it's cracked up to be.......2007-02-14

This box really falls short of the genre and does not do it much justice. Anyone remotely familiar with this material will already know the obvious ones.... Joy Division, Bauhaus, Nick Cave, Cure, etc. Come on already!

There's some stuff that really shouldn't be on here and lot's of mediocrity, bands that may have been included due to the presenter's lack of knowledge on the topic in an effort to fill space with numbers.
Rhino should have delved deeper into bands like Christian Death with their off-shoots like Mephisto Waltz. Or into acts like The Names, Durutti Column, Pale Fountains and even My Bloody Valentine or The Sound. I'd also go with Samhain over the Misfits if Danzig has to be polled into the mix.

No doubt that there's some great music here but in terms of the comp it's supposed to be I'd have to say it's a bust.

4 out of 5 stars Nice to seem them all in one place, but...........2007-01-24

Goth is a tag that's been retroactively applied to many of these bands. It means very different things to different people on different sides of the Atlantic. The folks at Rhino have done a really great job assembling this collection along thematic lines, and despite what some people have said in their reviews, there's no denying the relationship between industrial and "goth," just like there's no denying the close relationship between punk and goth. Too many of the great bands that we now associate with the goth movement feel much more strongly tied to punk (see: Sisters of Mercy, and listen to their old stuff next to the Ramones - you'll see what I mean), and rightfully so. American bands loosely associated with goth (Misfits, Ministry) happen to have arrived at a goth-esque place through very different means, but that doesn't make their inclusion here any less suitable. And industrial groups like Skinny Puppy and Ministry and Throbbing Gristle and Die Einstuerzende Neubauten were very much part of the same scene, even if they approached their dance music with a more or less performance artsy bent. And Jesus and Mary Chain, who could rock out with the best of the cheesy, vampy, 80's pop bands, made an album that couldn't have sounded much more like early Sisters (Psychocandy). The problem, for me, with this collection, is that it's clearly marketed to an American fanbase, one which puts altogether too much stock in labels (the packaging doesn't help either).

5 out of 5 stars Gothic 101.......2007-01-17

I really love this box set. I grew up in the age of goth was around for it's birth. Of course at the time I never considered myself a goth in anyway and I wouldn't have looked the part either. But the music is another thing altogether and I truly loved the music that became known as GOTH. This is great example of some great songs from the goth age and well represented across the genre and through time. Although I owned most of these songs already, either on CD or Vinyl, there were some gems in the mix that I didn't have. I also liked the DVD, which features some videos for songs that didn't make it onto the music CD's themselves. My friends and I had a great laugh as well when we read the instructions on how to dance goth. As funny as it read, it was dead on with my memory of how "goths" danced at the clubs I visited in my youth and maybe, just maybe, it rubbed off on how I danced at the time as well. All in all a Life Less Lived is a great box set for those who love goth or for those who wish to get a definitive initiation into the goth music genre.

5 out of 5 stars So gothic the sun hurts my eyes.......2007-01-16

A very good compilation that includes crossover bands like Joy Division, The The Cure, The Cult and other "big name" goths like Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus & Nick Cave. Compares favorably to Cleopatra's "Gothic Rock vols. I & II," which was the last comprehensive effort I have seen to really represent the Goth movement, but didn't include any of those bands. The Gothic Box also drifts into Industrial (Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Killing Joke), and includes some more obscure entries, too. Very highly recommended.

The firecrackers on the sleeve give a good idea of what to expect on this Florida ska-punk group's third major-label album after a brief sojourn back in the indie world. Horns, chugging guitars, and crashing rhythms mesh to create a high-energy racket that refuses to subside until the band has rolled out its raucous closing cover version of Cheap Trick's "Surrender." The label turbulence does little to affect its angular wit, as focus returns to the heady party vibes of the group's hugely successful major label debut, Losing Streak: pogo-driven "Best Wishes to Your Black Lungs" and "That's Why They Call It a Union" are standard-issue Less Than Jake. As with the band's other releases, the music inspires clear feelings of love and hate. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Worth owning if you're a fan of the genre........2006-10-09

This is vintage Less Than Jake. Fun, slightly homogenous, but fun enough to make up for that for the most part. The new version of "Look What Happened", "Science of Selling Yourself Short" and their cover of "Surrender" are LTJ at their best. The album does kinda fade into a blur towards the middle, but snaps out of it with the decent "She's Gonna Break Soon" and the excellent "Brightest Bulb Has Burnt Out" There isnt anything quite as brilliantly simple yet easygoing and fun as "History of a Boring Town" or "Gainesville Rock City". But there's plenty here to add to the library. It isnt a highlight in their career, but far from a blemish.

2 out of 5 stars They've done much much better..........2006-03-24

Ok, First of all... this message goes out to all the reviewers who say that I'm stupid or wrong for rating Anthem less than 5 stars. A review is an opinion and I will rate based on MY opinion. If you don't agree with me, then so be it. All you judgemental naysayers can just ignore my review and go buy this CD and listen to it all day long. You can love it, marry it, sleep with it, and cook it dinner. Good for you. Thats Your opinion.
As far as my opinion goes... THIS ALBUM WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT.

I first started listening to Less Than Jake when they released Losing Streak, dead set in the middle of the late 90's ska revival. I loved em. I love the ska/punk sound in general. I love the upbeat songs, skankin' guitars, and the horns all rolled into happy little 3 minute packages that barrage your eardrums with fun. I thought Losing streak was a really good album. Then Hello Rockview was released. That album convinced me that Less Than Jake was one of the best ska/punk bands anywhere because I was crazy about every single track on the disk and I couldn't have asked for more. Next out was Borders and Boundaries, which was ALMOST as good as Hello Rockview, but not quite. I still enjoyed it immensely.

and then came ...Anthem...

I bought the CD almost immediately after its release date expecting another fantastic album.
WOW. I couldn't believe the disappointment I'd bought, and it was a doozy!
The very first thing I noticed, and it may well be the one thing that upset me most, was the fact that they rerecorded one of the best songs from Borders and Boundaries, Look What Happened. In the rerecorded version, they removed the entire horn intro and made the song more of a punk song, removing much of the horn parts, or making them barely audible over the other instruments. That annoyed me right from the start. So after the initial shock and annoyance, I listened to the album once though as I do with most new CDs. I found about half of the tracks to be rather lousy. The songs weren't interesting or catchy and they seemed difficult to sing or hum along with for lack of an interesting melody (I'm a sucker for a good melody). Much of the horn sound for which Less Than Jake had become heavily assiciated with was either missing altogether, or barely audible over the other instruments. After a few more listens through the CD... and 3 years later, I STILL find that I only like about half of the songs on the CD... and that may be a generous estimate. I admit that one or two have grown on me since, but a truly good album shouldn't have to grow ion you.
I did eventually burn myself a custom copy of Anthem using only the tracks that I like and the GOOD version of Look What Happened from the Borders and Boundaries album (YES, I already owned both of the CDs!) and now I can enjoy my copy of Anthem without all the garbage tracks.

My Final Thought:
My opinion is that Anthem is a big disappointment from previous Less Than Jake CDs. If you're considering this album, I strongly suggest you listen to the sound clips and base your decision on them. I also mention that if you were a big fan of earlier Less Than Jake albums, you may well be disappointed with this one.
...But hey, thats just my opinion...

2 out of 5 stars Ska?.......2006-03-22

So yeah, I know ska is pretty much dead, but did LTJ really have to cross over? This record is pure pop-punk, with a horn thrown in (almost never) here and there. Fans of older LTJ and ska should look elsewhere. Pop-punk blows!

5 out of 5 stars Wanted: Thomas Newman Scores.......2006-10-04

It's astonishing what Newman can do in this score with a simple crescendo. I hope someone comes to their senses and releases the score to 'Less than Zero' as well as 'Men don't Leave', another of Newman's heart-wrenching, unreleased scores.

5 out of 5 stars Classical/ Orchestra Music / Glenn Danzig.......2006-09-04

I rate this soundtrack a 5 just from Glenn's performance!
If Raymond Rosswell and Peetus want to hear some GREAT Clasical/Orchestra Music then check out Black Aria from Glenn Danzig! It's not your typical metal/classical music you might expect from Danzig!
It is trully great!

4 out of 5 stars Less Than Zero Soundtrack.......2005-12-20

Good collection of songs. Poison has a neat rendition of KISS's "Rock and Roll All Nite". A great Slayer cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is a great slash metal tune. Aerosmith's cover of "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu" sounds like nothing else, on par with "Train..", "Walking the Dog" and "Come Together" as Aerosmith's great cover songs. But, perhaps the steal of the record is a great Public Enemy song for enthusiasts and casual fans alike, "Bring the Noise" might have you coming back for more. Great collection on the car stereo or anywhere. The 4 out of 5 stars is mostly because of the song-to-song transition. Great artist sampler. Try it!!

3 out of 5 stars Fair 80s nostalgia, but the score is best.......2005-04-12

For those who are looking for the original soundtrack score to the film, it's done by Thomas Newman. The same artist who did some other more recent and great soundtracks: American Beauty, Meet Joe Black, etc. I'm trying to find it too, but believe it may be unavailable.

5 out of 5 stars a class album by Less Than Jake.......2006-09-02

I've just recently gotten into this band and I have to say they are awesome! Hello Rockview is a great album that's fast, upbeat, and just overall really fun to listen to from beginning to end. Some standout tracks include "History of a Boring Town", "Scott Farcas Takes It on the Chin", and "All My Best Friends are Metalheads."

Being a ska fan, I really enjoyed the ska-punk sound of this album, and it's easily my favorite Less Than Jake album I've heard so far (my first cd was Anthem, which is also very good, but definitely lacking in ska). If you are new to LTJ, I would recommend buying this album first, along with Losing Streak, as it demonstrates the band at their best.

(Also, if you are a Less Than Jake fan and haven't seen them live, you definitely should! They are fun and energetic, and a whole lot better than most of these new bands around today.)

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Rockview..........2006-08-09

Ok, first off, I'm not a kid, but I don't have an account on here.

Less Than Jake's 'Hello Rockview', is a masterpiece. It kind of departs from the ska sound of their previous efforts, but not too much. Anyway, ignore that last sentance, becuase it was what almost stopped my from buying it, as I had oringinally planned to buy Pezcore and Losers, Kings, Things instead, but the store didn't have them. I was mildly dissapointed at first, but I gave it a listen, and I was blown away. So, please, do not let the 'a little less ska' convince you to not buy this.

I think one of the greatest things about this album, is that the horn parts have improved drastically. Before, the horn parts sounded almost the same throught the whole song, which got boring after a while, but they vary here, and I think it is much better. There are also more key changes, and tempos change more than previous LTJ songs. This album has 5 hornless songs, but once again, please do not let that fool you.

Last One Out of Liberty City-10/10 - A great way to start this album, the horns are great, and the bass is amazing

Help Save the Youth of America From Exploding 7/10 - A hornless song, but it's still great nonetheless. Roger plays a finger sweet finger tapping solo, but it sounds kinda just like another punk song

All My Best Friends are Metalheads 10/10 - One of the first LTJ songs people hear, and one of the best on the album. Most regognizable becuase it was on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.

Five State Drive 10/10 - GREAT opening bass line here. A lot of heavy horn useage here.

Nervous In the Alley 10/10 - Doesn't use the horns as much, but is very catchy. I couldn't stop listening to it after I first bought the album. Has a synthesiser thing in it.

Motto 8/10 - Another hornless song; I tend to like this one more than Help Save the Youth... for some reason. It's the heaviest song on the album.

History of a Boring Town 8.5/10 - Ok, now I never understood why people made this song out to be at some godlike status. It's a really good song, but after reading all these good reviews about it, it can't possibly what you exepcted, and you are dissapointed at it not being as great as you were expecting.

Great American Sharpshooter 10/10 - A short, hornless song. It's super catchy, and great. It's even better than some of the songs with horns.

Danny Says 10/10 - By far, the most underrated song on the album. It's a ska song, with pretty good horns, and bassline. I don't understand why people don't like it that much.

Big Crash 11/10 - Absoultely great. Not ska, but punk with horns. Another underrated one. My second favorite song on the album. Very catchy

Theme Song for H Street 7/10 - I understand why people don't like this one as much. Not ska, but punk with horns. It isn't skippable at all, but it just isn't as good as the others.

Richard Allen George.... No, It's Just Cheez 9.5/10 - I like this song. It's a short ska song, without horns. Resembles a ska core song, but it isn't "core" enough. There's a pretty cool thing at the end too.

Scott Farcas Takes It On the Chin 15/10 - By far, the best song on the album. Everything is perfect about it. Ska song with great horns, extremly great bass, vocals, everything.

Al's War 5/10 - And we come to the end... the only skippable track I think. I don't always skip this track. But 75% of the time I do. It's hornless, and kind of boring. It brings back the fade-out ending from Pezcore though. It get's a five, mainly becuase it can usually keep my attention for a minute or so, and I like the ending.

I know, my rating isn't an average, but I belive that it is a 5 star album. It's great for any LTJ fan, if you like their newer or older stuff.

There really is no perfect time to get this album; it works great as your first, or your last LTJ album, and is definatly LTJ's best effort so far.

I will also recomend some other albums you might like if you enjoy this:

Less Than Jake-Losing Streak, Pezcore, Losers,Kings, and Things We don't Understand

The Suicide Machines- Destruction by Definition, Battle Hymns, A Match and some Gasoline

Catch 22- Keasbey Nights

Streetlight Manifest- Everything Goes Numb

The Aquabats- The Return of the Aquabats, The Fury of the Aquabats

Operation Ivy- Energy

5 out of 5 stars A CD worth your money.......2006-05-16

This is a CD worth buying. I listen to it a lot and it doesn't get old. Includes cool songs like "Nervous in the Alley" and "All my Best Friends Are Metalheads" (which was feaured on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4"). If you like ska, punk, or just plain anything fun to listen to, get this CD. Every song on here is worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Not really ska.......2006-04-11

When i think of Less than Jake i really dont think of ska too much just really good punk music with a touch of ska. The reason is if you listen to early catch 22.....er wait scratch that how bout we just go streetlight manifesto since tom was the real brains behind thier success and he redid Keasbey Nights and made his own original alblum better than nething catch 22 ever did even with him in it. And then theres reel big fish now those are truly ska bands. which makes since LTJ was everyones first taste of ska until they went on to truly ska music. I mean even NOFX busts out a horn now and then. LTJ is a great fun band and if you like ne of the bands i metioned u should at least give em a try.

5 out of 5 stars One of Their Best.......2006-02-01

This CD is amazing. Right off the bat Last One Out of Liberty City gets you going with the amazing bass line. Then songs like Scott Farcas Takes it on the Chin have super catchy horns that just make you jump up and dance. All My Best Friends Are Metalheads is also an amazing song. This album starts a trend that was seen in all the albums after this one as well, that is Roger, the bass player, sings lead more than he usually has before. This adds some different flavor to songs and sounds really good. Chris does amazing vocals as well, but the change just spices it up. Cool album, i say buy it.

5 out of 5 stars another album i can worship.......2006-11-09

I am sitting here wondering what I can say in this review that will make me sound like a knowlegable and reliable source for music information (or spelllig). That sounds pretencious. I can't think of anything else to say about Less Than Jake (big fan(and this album inperticular)) other than everyone will be a fan after they listen to this. So listen.

1. Automatic 5/5: The album opens with an old guy saying "This is the old dude Howie J. Reynolds and you're listening to Less Than Jake." Right after that, Automatic begins starting out with a great bass and then the trombone comes in. This is a very good song.
2. Happy Man 4/5: This is a pretty good, fast song, but it isn't my favorite. The lyrics are about a guy who is constantly working.
3. 9th at Pine 5/5: This is a pretty good one.
4. Sugar in Your Gas Tank 5/5: If I had it in me I'd stop my random thoughts and my dumb dreams, then I could deal with this non-stop spinning world (lyrics from the song.)
5. Shindo 4/5: Slower, but still good. Nice duet with both singers (Chris and Roger).
6. 107 5/5: This song is awesome! At one part, the singer yells "You're going down!" And now I always imitate that when one of my friends does something to antogonize me (like flicking my ear with a spoon.)
7. Johnny Quest thinks we're Sellouts 4/5: HahAhaHa! this is funny since Johnny Quest is an old cartoon character!
8. Krazy Glue 5/5: A pretty cool song about following your own point of view and not giving in to tradition.
9. Never Going back to New Jersey 5/5: Pretty cool.
10. How's my driving, Doug Hastings? 3/5: It could have gotten a 5 out of 5, but there is just too much profantiy in this one.
11. Just Like Frank 4/5: Nice one
12. Ask the Magic 8 Ball 5/5: Something about this makes me think of Lego Island. Don't ask. I have no clue why.
13. Dopeman 4/5: Cool drums and horns on this one.
14. Jen Doesn't like me anymore 5/5: How can Jen not like him when he's the lead singer of one of the best bands ever?
15. Rock N' Roll Pizzeria 4/5: Why is this song called Rock N' Roll Pizzeria!?!
16. Lockdown 4/5: Nice close to a great album.

All in all, this is a great album. If you like ska, punk, or rock in general, you have to get this for your collection. Also check out the albums "Hello Rockveiw" and the new one "In With the Out Crowd."

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2006-02-23

This CD is one of their best by far. All my favorite songs are on this. They truly shine through this CD, if your a Less Than Jake fan this is a must buy CD!

4 out of 5 stars Fine Tasting Ska.......2006-02-01

This CD is awesome. This is what really established Less Than Jake in the public scene. This is a great album, full of catchy horns and just overall great ska. Some would say this is LTJ's best album, but I tend to like their newer stuff. That's the only reason I gave it a four, because I was comparing it to those. It's worth it if you are a LTJ fan at all.

5 out of 5 stars LTJ at their best.......2005-09-25

If you're a fan of ska, you should like this. It really is one of the better Less Than Jake albums. Some personal favorites are "Automatic," "Dopeman," and "Jen Doesn't Like Us Anymore." Losing Streak is definitely a more horn-driven record than any of their other albums. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Is this LTJ?.......2007-02-05

This is such a generic sounding alblum. It's terrible stay away at all costs. Their new direction is so bland and boring its sickening.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2007-01-22

I'm a big LTJ fan. I've listened to their old albums repetitively over the years and I was really impressed by this one. I agree with the other people that reviewed this album, it's more 'poppy' and less ska/punk as the other albums have been, but I still think it's a great album. My favorite track has to be 'In-Dependence Day', it sounds a bit like the older songs and has a catchy chorus and beat. I love all the songs on this CD, though. Keep it up, LTJ, you're doing great!

1 out of 5 stars This is depressing..........2007-01-21

You know...as I listen to the GREAT LTJ albums "Losing Streak", "Hello, Rockview" and "Borders and Boundaries", I can't help but think "WHAT HAPPENED?!". Losing Streak is an album I can listen to from start to finish multiple times without getting bored, there isn't one bad song. Then I listen to this and it doesn't even sound like the same band. Right when I heard "She's Gonna Break Soon" from "Anthem", I knew they were heading a direction that was basically abandoning their ska roots and I hate to say that I was right. What a shame...

4 out of 5 stars Need to add my thoughts.......2007-01-16

OK so i was like many of you guys, i got the new album and immediately thought WOW this sucks, and put it on the shelf. then some time passed and i went to my cds and said "hey i'll give it another try", and that was two months ago and i haven't stopped listening yet. like many of you i have been following LTJs career for a long time. first heard them around the release of pezcore when i was 17 and i've been hooked ever since. fast forward to me at the ripe ago of 30 and i'm still hooked. yeah the sound may have change a bit and they don't use the horns as much (which they need to), but it is still LTJ, no doubt about it, the songs, the lyrics, the playing and everything else. this is one of those rare bands that i've kept up with for 10+ years and they have yet to disappoint. i mean sure i wish every album was pezcore or losing streak, but it can't be that way, we don't live in a vacuum. also i would never say they sound like good charlotte or any of those crap MTV bands, if anything good charlotte sounds like less than jake. i mean when i hear LTJ i know it's LTJ, i don't compare them to other bands cause LTJ is there own sound. even though it has changed over the years it is still the same LTJ i fell in love with 10+ ago. there, now i feel a little better...

4 out of 5 stars A strong offering from LTJ, as they head into a new direction.......2006-12-02

Well, first off I am a 16 year old who is too lazy to create an account and I actually started my five album LTJ library with this one. I heard "Motown Never Sounded So Good" from Anthem at a friend's house, and I thought I would pick up the newest album. I am actually very impressed, and while I see now after buying the older albums that they do not retain the same ska elements as they did in albums such as "Losing Streak" and "Hello Rockview", "In With the Out Crowd" is a very enjoyable rock album from a band who obviously went in a new direction. Here is the track by track breakdown:

1. Soundtrack of My Life - A good opener that I thought sounded much like songs from the album Anthem, which I liked a lot. Somewhat poppy, but a fun track. 8/10

2. A Still Life Franchise - Hands down my favorite track on this album. It was the first I heard of any LTJ at all with any good horns. Repetitive chorus, however I love it anyways. Very nice. 10/10

3. Overrated (Everything Is) - I really don't know why the other reviewers are giving this a 1/10. It isn't that bad to deserve such a low score, but it isn't worth a high one either. The song was obviously made with the intention to give LTJ a radio hit. It is a poppy song and that was the apparent goal. I don't care for it, but I do not despise it like the rest of them. 5/10

4. Fall Apart - Makes up a bit from the last track. Not a ska song but it's a good rock track anyways. 8/10

5. In-Dependence Day - I don't mind this song, but it wouldn't make my day bad if I skipped it. I skip it 60% of the time. 6/10

6. Don't Fall Asleep On The Subway - Cool track. Has some horns. Sounds like a mix of Anthem and Hello Rockview. 8/10

7. Landmines and Landslides - I like this track a lot. No horns, but for some reason I like it a lot. Reminds me of New Found Glory, who I still like a little bit. 9/10

8. The Rest of My Life - This song is almost a ballad. It is a really good rock song. No horns but I really enjoy it. One of my favorites on the album. 9.5/10

9. Mostly Memories - Good, fast track. Enjoyable with horns and other things. Sounds more like the old, but only a little bit. 8/10

10. Let Her Go - This song sounds the most like something from Hello Rockview or Losing Streak. Has the ska guitar style and almost everything is there. Really good. 9/10

11. Hopeless Case - Another good track. I enjoy the style of this song. The singing is good and is more defined in this song. Stands out from the rest of them in that it has its own sound to it. 8/10

12. P.S. Shock The World - This song is one of the best on the disc. It has horns, and if anyone has heard "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" from Anthem, then they will think of it when they hear this at first. It starts to turn back to the new LTJ sound in the chorus and such, but it is still a very good song. 10/10

Also, LTJ released a b-side to this album on their Myspace (although I am not sure if it is still on it):

"13". Only Human - Has the horns back! I am not sure why this song was removed from the final album, it would have been a great song to have in there. Good singing, great use of the horns, and just everything is good. 9/10
