The first volume of this long-running series of "quiet storm" classics is also one of the best. Among the '70s and early-'80s soul ballads included are several that helped define the popular radio format: the long live version of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Reasons," Heatwave's "Always and Forever," and Larry Graham's "One in a Million You." Where later Smooth Grooves CDs get bogged down in prettiness for its own sake, the performances here are marked by regret (Teddy Pendergrass's eternal "Love T.K.O.," Champaign's "How 'Bout Us") or a true sweetness (the Manhattans' "Shining Star"). The finest are music of the soul, music that deserves to be heard with or without a lover around. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Slow Jams Lover's Paradise.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 1 was an amazing start of a classic slow jams that new school couples and old school couples can appericate. The first track the classic Reasons (Live) has become a staple on my DJ mix tapes sounds better than the studio version. Track 2 is the always classic Always & Forever by Heatwave followed by the sentimental Forever Mine by The'O'Jays.

4 out of 5 stars Classic R&B.......2006-07-17

If you like classic R&B, this CD is for you. The title of the CD says it all. Grab your wine and your woman, throw on this CD and,...you get the idea.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good example of why 70s-80s compilations are best.......2002-07-08

Every single song on this CD is good. "Love's Train" has that unforgettable vocal performance. Alone, it makes the whole CD worth buying.

When buying whole albums, artists nowadays tend to run out of musical ideas about 1/2 way through the CD. And even for those artists that have a never ending supply of new ideas, you can tired of the same voices and the same musicians contained in a single album.

With this CD, neither of those things is an issue. If you want to set someone in the mood to get out of their clothes, this can be a critical tool in that quest.

5 out of 5 stars A winner!.......2002-02-21

If you are into classic R&B this CD is for you! From start to finish it is a winner. The selections are the SMOOTHEST ever and it keeps you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2002-06-05

I'll be blunt- this CD is awesome. There is so many different kinds of music expressed! Theres a mournful harmonica song, theres a trombone solo song- its just a great CD to listen to on a rainy afternoon, or, for that matter, a sunny day. Definitely a good buy! :-)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation!.......2002-03-05

Narada has gone out of its way to convince people that it has more to offer than just "New Age" artists. On this compilation, Narada showcases some outstanding jazz talent. The CD opens with a very nice piece from Urban Knights taken from their Urban Knights III CD and then transends effortlessly into what has become my favorite cut, "Walking Through The Pyramid" by Oscar Lopez. The entire compilation was put together so as to sound like it is a CD performed by one group rather than ten. The CD's only draw back is the inclusion of "Escape", the discs only vocal track and possibly the overly laidback lounge music of Toots Thielemans' "Hard To Say Goodbye". At least 8 outstanding tracks for a bargain price. Worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A JAZZERS DELIGHT !!.......2001-04-13

I came across this cd quite by chance whilst on holiday in Florida. I went into the music store with my daughter, who at the tender age of nine displayed a wisdom beyond her years and urged me to listen to the album playing on demo. I was gripped instantly. Its beautiful music born of a marriage of some of the greatest artists on the jazz scene. The varietal style is the making of this album with elements of blues, smooth jazz, traditional and even a hint of latino and funk - superb moody sax playing and some downright soft and sassy trumpet playing to underline a good solid earthy performance. Add a little Cuban spice and some acoustic magic and you have a heady cocktail to spin the senses.

Urban Knights makes for a tasty rhythmic apéritif and before you have a chance to shout encore your sent reeling into Oscar Lopez's hypnotic latino spell. Rushing headlong on through Warren Hill's talented soulful performance on the saxophone your greeted by Cuba L.A exciting and heady interpretation of Whisper Not (my personal favourite). Savour a while those hot, spicy Cuban nights and shimmy out on the dance floor to surrender to the rhythm. Of course they could only follow it with Scott Wilkie, a great talent in his own right, such vibrant and refreshing key work. Of course Fruit Sandwich gives you an appetite for a little Escape and this you can certainly do as you lose yourself in another fine example of some passionate keywork. Alex de Grasi provides us with the only vocal experience on the album and although not normally my forte I have to say its a first rate well produced track. Rushing headlong into the penultimate track your greeted by the Ramsey Lewis Trio performing Close Your Eyes and Remember and boy do you remember this one. This another favourite of mine being a lover of the jazz guitar and I love what I consider to be great tender mood music. Toots Thielemans spine chilling talent on the harmonica finally shows us that it really is Hard to Say Goodbye. This last track for me is another favourite which is good down to the very last drop and comes to an end all too disappointingly soon.

In essence one of those albums that provides a great talent filled experience right the way through and definitely an album you'll be proud to have in your collection. SUBERB VALUE FOR MONEY!!

5 out of 5 stars Great start of a slow jam trilogy.......2006-12-11

Next to seventies soul, I love New Jac Swing slow jams. Smooth Grooves: New Jack Ballads, Vol. 1 is an amazing introduction to a three disc series of classic slow jams. The first late-'80s/early-'90s installment of Rhino's popular Smooth Grooves series, New Jack Ballads, Vol. 1 leans toward conventional urban R&B instead of the hip-hop-inflected contemporary R&B that came to define new jack R&B. Even if the music on Vol. 1 isn't strictly new jack R&B, it's nevertheless first-rate urban soul, one of the best, most comprehensive discs of its kind on the market, featuring such hits as Levert's "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind," Ready for the World's "Love You Down," the System's "Don't Disturb This Groove," Guy's "Goodbye Love," Surface's "Happy," The Jets' "You Got It All" and the Gap Band's "I Found My Baby." My favorite on the disc though are No One Can Treat Me Like You by Dreamboy and Still In Love by Troop.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good but has a few misses........2003-07-09

This CD focuses on late 1980s and early '90s R&B slow jams and has several outstanding tracks by LeVert, Surface , Michael Cooper and others but some songs are over-produced and unispired. Not bad, but not one of Smooth Grooves' best volumes.

Saying the smooth-jazz genre has a foundation seems oxymoronic. But, back in the mid-1980s, when KIFM-San Diego, KTWV-Los Angeles, and WNUA-Chicago first went on the air, contemporary jazz musicians were recording music aimed straight at the public's heart, not toward what radio programmers were thinking. Most of the music on the first of this three-volume retrospective reflects that postfusion period of the late 1970s and early 1980s before the term "smooth jazz" existed. It was a time when technically brilliant and commercially successful musicians--such as Ronnie Laws, Bob James, David Sanborn, and the Yellowjackets--were rejecting disco and mixing together rock, jazz, funk, European classical, pop, and New Age music. The resulting sound managed spirited rhythms, interesting harmonies, and quality improvised solos, unlike much of the smooth jazz that would follow. At least half the tracks here, including the first four, are smooth-jazz radio standards. Other tracks, such as Rodney Franklin's "Song for You," Mike Mainieri's "Wanderlust," and "May I Have This Dance," from the exciting Brazilian group Azymuth, are out-of-print gems that alone make this compilation worth having. --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Smooth Jazz Collection!.......2000-08-28

This collection is so beautifully put together, it's sure to be a favorite for any lover of jazz. All of these tunes have that "take me away to a heavenly bath" feeling, and it sure does take you away to a heavenly place. This CD contains some of the very best smooth jazz artists of all time. Exquistite performances and compositions. How could you get anything but a great album with artists like the Yellowjackets, Fourplay, Stanley Jordan, and David Sanborn?

One of the gems on this disc is the theme from T.V.'s "Taxi", a smooth jazz classic, written and performed by Bob James. Check out the work he did on the "Karen Carpenter" solo album, if you like great vocals with some great smooth jazz. Bob arranged, orchestrated and played many of the tunes on her album.

Many of the fine songs included here by artists as diverse as Shirley Jones, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Kashif, Al Jarreau, Loose Ends and Minnie Ripperton all became Quiet Storm classics. The real reason why this music remains timeless is because it touches your heart and soul in a way most of today's so-called "Urban" R&B can't- this is REAL music in every way imaginable (so do yourself a favor and buy this CD now- you WON'T be disappointed!).

5 out of 5 stars This is a must if u luv Jazz, R&B and Hip-Hop.......2005-06-08

Can't say enuff 'bout this. I kinda heard alot of songs being samples off this compilations incl. "Riding High" by Faze-O (once sampled by my fav. rap group EPMD), "Mister Magic" by Grover Washington Jr. (R.I.P.) (sampled by the group Soul 4 Real for a rmx of "Candy Rain") Playing Your Game, Baby by Barry White (R.I.P.) (sampled by that hip-hop group Black Moon for "Got Cha Open"), etc. I mean alot of artists sample those songs together everybody from Mary J., Aaries, Common, Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, D'Angelo, among others. I wish they had available anywhere by goin to gemm.com, djangos.com, spun.com or any other used music store to see if this available or not. They pull it up one day on this website. But good compiliation and definitely a must to include along w/ sum ol' school R&B and jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Warm Relaxing Healing Water.......2003-09-10

I love this CD. I never knew how much I had missed this music until I held these butter smooth grooves all togther on the same CD. With the exception of that track from the Ohio Players, All you need to do, is play this CD and drive, relax, meditate or do whatever and this well put together gelled together tracks will keep you floating forward. I have these songs on other CD's but it's the culmination of these master pieces back to back that makes this CD a true work of art

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect CD.......2001-10-16

This is one of the best compilation albums I ever heard, and I heard a lot. This is real old school R&B jazzy-funk.

5 out of 5 stars If you R&B and hip-hop.......2001-07-07

If you love R&B and recent hip-hop samples make you long for the original versions, this CD is for you. It has a very mellow groove, undisturbed except for the more raucous Ohio Players track (Fopp). The 15-song collection contains certain classics that can never be overplayed: Sweet Thing by Chaka Khan & Rufus, Cruisin by Smokey Robinson, and For the Love of You by the Isley Brothers; but also the rarer Riding High by Faze-O and Be Thankful for What You've Got by William DeVaughn. The CD is great to listen to on a sunny afternoon at home or behind the wheel. The Al Green track's intricate opening beat was sampled by Notorious BIG. Other songs have been sampled and re-made, but these are the ORIGINALS. You won't be disappointed!
