The best of the ambient series.......2005-08-05
While all of Brian eno's work is interesting, his own work in the ambien series, while refreshîng, was enver as exciting as this piece; it is ironic that the best album in this series would not be by eno himself.
Not your grandfather's dulcimer player.......2004-08-26
This album is fantastic, a great tapestry of minimalist structures or grids of Laraaji's hammered dulcimer. Producer Brian Eno layered many tracks, then applied sonic effects like reverb and delay (and especially at times, a swooping graphic EQ)--that transforms the harmonic profile of Laraaji's dulcimer, at times evoking flutes or an electric guitar, which makes latent melodies emerge from the huge sound. This album had a big influence on U2's guitarist the Edge, with whom Eno worked after this album.
Minimalist meditation music.......2004-04-10
This third album in the "Ambient" series seems definitely influenced by the minimalist movement; quickly-repeated, slightly varied motifs skirled by a very metallic-sounding harp. In contrast, Ambient 1 drifts and seems rather more song-like in its format. I like the concept of minimal music and its almost visual or textural effect created by the slight variations in sound that are built by repetition. So I enjoyed this a lot, but it's not for those who find this type of music stupifyingly dull.
I was excited by the glistening sound of Laraaji's harp in "The Dance". The harp mixed with a percussive sound on some strings or with another instrument, but this percussive sound never overpowers the rhythmic beat of the harp motifs. This work is in three parts, similar sounding, but with variation in dynamics. "Meditation" is more spacey and dreamy, much more what you'd expect from Brian Eno. Deep notes mix with etherial harp, bell and string sounds. In short, if you like minimalist music, you will love this. Otherwise, think twice or hear a sample first.
...bathing in thousands of bright tones..........2003-10-27
Stunning! I don't agree with the people who claim this is the weakest album in the Ambient series. I find this one to be so utterly beautiful and exciting. Day of Radiance is such an appropriate name for this album. Laraaji has a way of constructing complex and fast melodies that yet retain a remarkable sense of space. Melodies within melodies. Higly recommended!
Healing Music.......2002-08-05
I really can recommend this album as one of my favourite CD's. The outstanding beauty of this music, the healing and relaxing sound of Laraaji's harp is somehow incompareable. Listen to this music when you soul needs some rest, switch your CD player on "repeat" and let the vibes of these sounds fill you rooms.
No.'s 4+5 are the highlights.

Returning to the solo live format for this double disc, one hour and 20 minute set, Keith Jarrett is in fine form. Recorded on two nights, three days apart, in Osaka and Tokyo in 2002 (but not released until 2005), Jarrett approached these recordings with no planning. Instead he let the energy transport him and his hands to places that can only be found when the philosophical and physical join as one. It was a risky move, but it paid off in one of the most inspired and challenging albums of his near four decade career.
The usual Jarrett musical concepts apply as he combines classical, jazz, avant-garde, and dynamic melodic ideas within a single piece. Even in the album's many quiet moments, the energy level never wavers as this performance proves that the space between notes is every bit as intense and important as the notes themselves. Shifting between subtle passages such as those in "Part 6" and the more dissonant work of "Part 7," Jarrett takes his audience on a journey that seems as illuminating for him as it is for us. This is cerebral, obdurate yet flexible and emotionally driven music from a musician who always follows his inner calling. Established fans will be thrilled with this performance and open-minded newcomers will be left slack-jawed at Keith Jarrett's talent and uncompromising vision. Hal Horowitz

Radiating light.......2007-05-27
This is another intriguing improvisation by Keith Jarett, I recommend a dimmed room in the late hours and a receptive and relaxed mind to wander through his music!
Deeply stirring.......2006-09-19
Radiance is a precious, intense, thougtful, suprising, and stirring composition that highlights Keith's brilliance and leaves me with a sense of profound gratitude that we've been given the chance to experience growth beyond the what he's shared with us in the past. It's taken more than 6 months for me to write this review because I haven't (and still don't) feel that I can muster any words to adequately capture the feeling of this music. There are layers and layers and layers of meaning in the music which are best appreciated through several sessions of deep concentrated attention over many months. This music doesn't reveal itself superficially. I've never been a fan of the "abstract" style which characterizes many of the songs on the release and much of Keith's work. Instead, I prefer a melody where I can perceive the flow ... but that said, there are enough magically haunting passages here to move this to the top of my most cherished songs. In my personal opinion, this is the greatest work since Koln, which for me is the gold standard of Keith's work. If anything can surpass Koln in my experience, it would be songs 6, 7, and 8 on Disc 2 ... but especially song 8. That song has an overpowering spirit. What this CD lacks, which Koln has in my view, is a sense of cohesion. There are many beautiful songs in the set but I don't feel they are part of a family where Koln to me feels like something that flows from start to finish. This is why I give a 4 star rating.
Hey. We're your audience. Please care........2006-09-11
In the late 70s, I had a conversation with a fellow Keith Jarrett fan, but this guy was hardcore. I mentioned some obnoxious thing Jarrett had said in an interview and this fan said, "Oh, yeah, well, I try not to pay any attention to anything he SAYS."
I'm going to have to go with the appraisal of this collection as being largely self-indulgent. I think it is flawed in concept. We all know that, for the most part, Jarrett did some preparation for his best solo concerts and improvised on themes. This idea of sitting down with nothing and just playing: That might be an interesting exercise for the musician, but it come close to being an insult to a paying audience (attending a concert or buying a recording.) I've played "Radiance" three or four times and there's not much here that grabs me. It would have been better if it was half as long. I'll eventually pull out the best of these pieces and burn a single CD.
A look into the future.......2006-05-16
"Radiance" is a look into the future of Jarrett's musical style and direction. While he is as unpredictable as it gets in jazz, it's clear that the era of the long format improvisation is over - for now. Jarrett, either because of age, infirmity or a need to explore, has opted to shorter pieces of melodic and abstract suites that are emotionally and audibly linked by the listener into one greater piece.
After such a long career of thematic peaks and discoveries, you'd think there wasn't much left uncovered. That's the beauty of this new era: each phrase or passage adds something to one's already vast vocabulary. After "Koln," "Vienna," "Sun Bear" and all the rest, it's like watching a venerable athlete experimenting in ways that keep challenging the audience. Yeah, I'd like an encore of "Paris Concert," but somehow I'd feel cheated were that sort of thing ever released. (Actually, near the end of "Radiance" there is an eerie recall of those sparkling notes of "October 17.")
This is the way Jarrett's going. I heard him at the Carnegie Hall solo concert last September, doing very similar stuff. His attitude is, "This is what I'm doing. Who cares what anyone else thinks?" Definitely not your average musician.
Radiant!.......2006-03-05
It's always a pleasure to hear Keith Jarret's improvisations. Sometimes you have the impression that pieces of Scriabin, Prokofiev or Chopin are crossing the mind of the pianist, inspiring his way through the keyboard.
Radiance is really radiant, as long as you don't expect nice and singable melodies. Just climates. Very inspired climates.

Loved it.......2007-06-12
I have looked everywhere for this CD. Had it years ago and LOVED IT!!! Then it was stolen. found it here signed and all. Couldn't ask for anything more. These guys really know music!!!
Hooked on Athenaeum.......2005-01-31
This was the album that demonstrated that Athenaeum could deliver top notch songs with both musical quality and lyrical genius. Each track on the CD demonstrates a great deal of depth in their talents. As I get older, the angst and issues so beautifully communicated through song are still relevant to life today.
Not gonna lie............2004-12-13
I'm a sucker for for 90's college coffee house rock bands, and this CD definitly ranks up there with the best of them. What's interesting is that I cannot reallly compare this band to anyone else, maybe a softer Eve 6 but I doubt that is even approprite. Athenaeum is simply a good rock band. Pick the CD up and you will understand what I'm talking about.
Simply Glowing.......2004-08-16
I was one of those people who bought this cd because of the single "What I didn't Know". It was "Flat Tire", "Away" and "Unnoticed" that made me love it.
Mark Kano's voice offers the understanding of someone who knows and the angst of someone who knows too much. The songs all carry a down to earth sentiment. . . your true love is more vibrant than the light of the full moon. . . that you never get tired of listening too.
unfortunately overlooked.......2004-01-24
this cd was put out in 1998, but i bet if you ask someone to listen to it, they will tag it as a tantric or goo goo dolls rip off.this cd is very good."what i didn't know" and "flat tire" are two very standout tracks, whihc makes me wonder why they didn't get significant airplay.if you enjoy tantric, goo goo dolls, collective soul, and collapsis, this cd is for you.

phenominal if you can stand the slow tempo and English.......2000-04-07
Opinion is very sharply divided on Reginald Goodall's Wagner conducting, people either find it revelatory or insufferable. I personally found it very difficult to listen with sustained attention to his complete Ring, but it was worth the effort. This issue presents only the last two scenes of Act III of Twilight of the Gods, but still takes a full hour under Goodall's direction. It is a studio performance and has fewer lapses in intonation than his live recording of the complete opera. The singing is excellent; Rita Hunter has a classic Brunnhilde voice and the rest of the cast is very strong too, although they require prodigious breath control to match Goodall's tempo. The orchestral playing is beautiful and many details in the woodwind, which often get buried elsewhere, are clearly heard. The finale, although again very slow, has crushing power. I first heard this recording on the Unicorn-Kanchana label, both on record and on cassette, and thought it had some of the best sound engineering ever for this music, it really is quite enthralling. For those who object to the translation of the original text into English, I would say that Wagner himself authorized the Ring to be performed on tour after the 1876 Bayreuth Festival (by Angelo Neimann as I recall) and the translation was approved if it meant the difference between getting his music performed or not. Andrew Porter's translation comes as close to the German text as possible in rhythm and word meaning; it does lack some poetic subtleties. The singers enunciate the English text well and for a change it is nice to hear and understand everything that is sung without a libretto. The documentation is very good too. Overall, this is a fine release, although it may not appeal to everyone.

Gathering lilacs and rarer flowers........2002-08-22
Justice is done to Welsh-born composer, pianist, actor and man of the theatre Ivor Novello in this Naxos CD. The artists who first performed them are heard in 18 items, recorded between 1917 and 1950. Ivor Novello himself is heard in two of them, providing some spoken repartee as he accompanies Edna Best at the piano. Most were recorded in the 1930s. The sound quality is good enough for the lyrics to be clearly heard. They bespeak a long-vanished era, but the music still has charm.
Film buffs can nowadays most easily see Ivor Novello in an Alfred Hitchcock film of 1926, "The Lodger". Actor Jeremy Northam portrayed him in the recent film, "Gosford Park". Ivor Novello starred in his last production, "King's Rhapsody", and died nine days before I saw it in London in March 1951.

Album Description
Album Description Laura Doyle's amazing debut, "No Easy Answers" takes on many difficult topics including child abuse, suicide, and love lost and discovered. No matter what the message Laura manages to take the listeners on a journey of discovery, and healing with thoughtful, intelligent lyrics and emotionally charged vocals.
From the first notes of "Awaken" through to the award winning first single,"Let You Go" and the finale of "Radiance" you are somehow, entranced, intoxicated, and enlightened all at the same time.Laura is often compared,to the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Dido, and Sinead O'Connor among others. As lofty as these comparisons are one of Laura's most impactful qualities is her "girl next door" sense of lifes reality. Enjoy!!!

If your looking for music that is true to life and chills u out on a sunny sfternoon then buy this cd...beautiful voice!
A great CD........2004-05-14
Hi, I'm not normally known for posting, but hey I got this CD with my girlfriend at the time, from Laura herself in Vancouver, how cool is that? and of course her dog helped =). The music is great and Laura seems very cool. I think you should give her a chance. You can't go wrong in buying this CD. Not too many other CDs deserve your cash like this one does.
Seattle.......2002-07-26
This is a great CD!! Laura has a wonderful voice and the whole album makes you feel. I also met Laura briefly on the streets of Vancouver, BC. She is as real as her music. You need to buy this one!
beautiful, haunting music.......2002-03-17
For me the stand-out songs are definitely "Your Love" -- which features Doyle's exquisite haunting vocals, "Chasing Bees" -- which has a nice rollicking rhythm and gorgeous lyrics, "View of the Child" -- which is lovely, contemplative and sad, "All The Pretty Horses" -- which is the most aching lullaby-like tune you'll ever hear and "Last Exit to Surrey" -- which appears to be an autobiographical song about being strong in the face of the suicide of the singer's father. All is not doom and gloom on this CD, however. The tone is always surprisingly upbeat even when dealing with painful subject matter. Definitely worth checking out!

Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09
This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.
Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28
I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.
