When Stan Freberg released The United States of America in 1961, it was one of the first comedy concept albums ... and perhaps the funniest musical comedy never performed onstage. With a cast that included Jesse White and June Foray (as well as a dead-on Orson Welles impression by voice-over master Paul Frees), Freberg presented a madcap version of history that began with Christopher Columbus's insistence that "It's a Round, Round World." His crew, however, was unconvinced:

Crazy kind of scheme
It's a cockamamie dream
If we don't sight land we're gonna scream.

Later, a cautious Ben Franklin would express suspicion of the declaration Thomas Jefferson brought by for him to sign: "You go to a few harmless meetings, sign a few harmless petitions, and forget all about it.... Ten years later you get called up before a committee. No thank you! I'm not going to spend the rest of my life writing in Europe!"

For decades, fans were frustrated by the lack of sequels that would carry the story beyond the Revolutionary War. (After attempts to turn the material into a real Broadway musical were ruined by heavy-handed producer David Merrick, Freberg went on to a lucrative career in advertising.) Finally, in 1996, Freberg went into the studio with the surviving members of his original cast--as well as stars David Ogden Stiers, Sherman Hemsley, Tyne Daly, Lorenzo Music, and John Goodman--with a new batch of songs and skits that covered the period from the founding of the United States government in 1789 to the end of World War I.

Volume 2 is not quite as strong as volume 1, but that's like saying that Babe Ruth didn't hit as many home runs as Hank Aaron. There's still plenty of great material in "The Middle Years," like Francis Scott Key's first draft of his most famous composition: "Rumplemeyer's horseshoes are the best you can use, what so proudly he's nailed onto all kinds of horses." Or Ulysses S. Grant demanding a drink so he can keep on...

Pursuing the South
Over the hills
Fearless and brave, minus a shave
And crocked to the gills.

The two-CD set includes the original liner notes from the 1961 release; a 1989 CD reissue of the first volume; and the notes by Freberg, Dr. Demento, and Ray Bradbury for the sequel. It also contains a complete lyric sheet. Although some of the jokes on the first CD may be too arcane for younger listeners, The United States of America can still be called, without overstatement, a work of genius. --Ron Hogan

5 out of 5 stars They are right.......2006-06-30

The reviewers above who said the first volume is one of the funniest records ever made are right.

I listened to it when it came out and tracks like "A Man Can't Be Too Careful What he Signs these days" (Jefferson and Adams trying to get Franklin to sign the Declaration of Independence) and the one where Betsy Ross presents the new flag to George Washington are still indescribably funny.

But you can still buy the two volume set, pour yourself a nice dry Martini in a damp frosted glass, and use the disk with volume 2 for a coaster.

O;-)

5 out of 5 stars A comedic gem (Vol. 1, that is).......2005-07-05

I have been a BIG fan of this album for well over two decades, since I came across the LP at the local library as a teenager. I was simply in stitches, and searched at used record stores until I found a copy of my own, which I eventually wore out in my repeated listenings.

So I was excited when I heard that after all these years, Vol. 2 was finally coming. But what a disappointment.

Vol. 1 has great songs like "Round Round World", "Take an Indian to Lunch" and "A Man Can't be Too Careful What He Signs These Days" that not only sparkle with satiric wit, but are great tunes I sometimes find myself humming.

The songs in Vol. 2, however, fall flat and just feel, well, forced. And that applies to all of Vol. 2 as well. The sense is that they had a list of punch lines they were set on, and didn't stop to think if it was funny or not. Funny is not a word that can be applied to Vol. 2, sadly.

So buy it for Vol. 1. You can just discard the other disc.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for Volume 1; one star for Volume 2.......2005-04-19

"Vol. 1, The Early Years" is without a doubt the best comedy recording I have ever heard. I personally discovered it back in the mid-80s, when I came across a copy of the album one Saturday at the radio station where I worked. It was listened to many a time "in cue" or after sign-off. I simply could not get enough of it. I also listened repeatedly to his "Original Cast" greatest hits album and the classic "Freeberg Underground" live recording he did in the mid-60s at the Hollywood Bowl.

Ever since then, I had hoped that a) Vol. 1 would someday come out on CD, and b) that he would eventually make good on his promise in the original album's liner notes to bring out a Vol. 2.

Well, both of my wishes came true. Vol. 1 is out on CD and as good if not better than I remember it. Plus, they added back in some parts that were cut so the original recording could fit on one LP. Vol. 2, on the other hand, is a *major* disappointment.

Vol. 2 simply tries too hard. It tries to tackle a huge amount of American history (from the late 1700s through the end of World War I) in 34 tracks on one CD (a virtually impossible task). It tries to satirize events during the Civil War (a hopeless task). And, its satire lacks the "let's not take ourselves too seriously" light-heartedness of Vol. 1, which is another way of saying it is trying to be Politically Correct.

It's a shame Vol. 2 wasn't written and produced soon after Vol. 1. I honestly believe Stan and Co. would have come up with another classic.

I too wish Rhino still offered Vol. 1 separately. From a marketing/business standpoint, I understand why they don't do it.

Still, if you don't have Vol. 1, it's worth the sacrifice to buy the two-volume set just to get it. Who knows? You may end up liking Vol. 2. If not, it makes a good (albeit expensive) coaster.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars for Volume 1.......2005-02-10

My mom turned me on this LP and I listened to it repeatedly. It makes history SO funny! I have not heard this LP in years and years but I can still remember so much of it word for word.

Chris Colomubus and his duet with King Ferdenand is great!

Chris: It's a round, round world, it's a round, round world. I contend its round and its goin' be found, it's a round world now and its always been!

Kind Ferdindad: It's a flat, flat world, it's a flat, flat world, I contend its flat, as a welcoming mat, and you're sailing off the end, it's a flat world now and its always been!

If you are Stan Freberg fan, this is a MUST HAVE! And while you are at it, get yourself a nutcup and a couple of french horns!

5 out of 5 stars A classic (if a bit corny)!!.......2004-12-24

This is a classic bit of Americana.
A must-have for anyone who enjoys good comedy and great production value.

Big Boi Presents...Got Purp? Vol. II (Virgin, 2005)

In between the making of the Idlewild movie and soundtrack/album, OutKast's Big Boi was working on his new Purple Ribbon label (actually, it's the new name of Aquemini Records). Got That Purp was the first mixtape album (good luck trying to find it) and this, Got Purp?, is the second.

Is André 3000 on here? Take a listen to "Dungeon Family Dedication" by Killer Mike: "All I know is Big here/Dré gone, moved on..." Is he not on the album or not in OutKast anymore? Well, we all know the answer to that seeing that OutKast is together promoting Idlewild but back then, something must have been going on with them behind the scenes. Mike goes on to reminiscing on the good ol' days in the DF over the "Aquemini" instrumental while giving props to all of the old fam like Goodie MOb, Witchdoctor, and Big Rube. It's not the best way to kick off an album showcasing new talent because now we're stuck with having to compare them to the older artists.

Fortunately, the new talent holds their ground for the most part. Janelle Monáe isn't the best singer in the world but "Lettin' Go" shows some promise (she should have left Debarge's "Time Will Reveal" alone, though). Scar also does well singing with seasoned vet Cee-Lo on "What is This?" and on his own "U Got Me". The better-known artists drop some heat as well: Bubba Sparxxx's "Claremont Lounge" and Sleepy Brown's "Me, My Baby and My Cadillac" were so good that they also appear on their own albums from this year. Also, it's true that the Goodie MOb got back together but "Hold On" shouldn't be proof: this song is actually from 1995. If you remember OutKast's "Benz or Beamer" from the same year, André said, "Keep on holding on like Goodie Mo'."

To answer the question from earlier, Dré ain't on here but Big Boi isn't on here much, either. This is really an outlet for all of Big's artists. And while none of the songs are really groundbreaking, they do show a sign of things to come. Janelle and Scar already made a big splash on the Idlewild album. -EJR

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- Was there even a volume ONE?.......2006-08-28

Since OutKast's album Idlewild seemed like it was never going to come out (although now that it IS out, it's getting very heavily mixed reviews), I guess Big Boi had some extra free time to fill. So he got together a bunch of artists (some from his label, some not) and called them the Purple Ribbon All-Stars, who helped him deliver the compilation Got Purp Vol. II.

One surprising thing, though, is that many of the artists on here won't ring a bell to most. I mean, there's nothing wrong with showcasing new talent, but Purple Ribbon Records used to be called Aquemini Records, so you'd expect to find a lot of Dungeon Family-related songs (in Killer Mike's "Dungeon Family Dedication", he asks, "Where that Backbone album at?" which is odd, considering Backbone isn't even on the album). Big Boi himself is hardly even on here; rapping or producing, but the few songs he IS on are pretty solid, like "U Got Me" (with singer Scar) and, of course, "Kryptonite (I'm On It)".

Another highlight is Sleepy Brown's "Me, My Baby and My Cadillac". Also good is Goodie Mob's "Hold On", but what a lot of people don't realize is that it's not the entire Mob reunited; that song is actually from 1995 (it kind of makes me wonder how new that Scar and Cee-Lo song "What Is This" is). But then come a few songs that aren't so memorable. Janelle Monáe's vocals are pretty okay (and that club remix of DeBarge's "Time Will Reveal" should have never happened), and Konkrete's "Ish Ya Drawers" is sorry.

There are also a few cameos that work backwards: whereas Bun-B can't even save "808", Cool Breeze actually outshines Killer Mike and Bubba Sparxxx on "Claremont Lounge" (which is the point where Bubba started to make questionable choruses -- "Ms. Fat Booty", anyone?). The outro also has some singing by someone that sounds like he needs some Pepto-Bismol. Got Purp Vol. II isn't exactly the greatest of compilations, but if you already own everything OutKast/Dungeon Family related, it wouldn't hurt to pick it up.

3 out of 5 stars Weird.......2006-04-22

When I heard the song Kryptonite back in 2005, I just knew I had to get that Cd. when I heard the song, I didnt know a thing about Big boi or any of the other guys( except for Killer Mike). This Cd pissed me off, there was way too many interludes and I didnt hear the kind of stuff I was looking for. With all that extra stuff on the CD, its kinda hard to figure out what track your on, and the worst part is, the Cd is PROTECTED, m,eaning you cant put it on itunes or any of that other stuff. There were very few tracks I liked on the CD.

Dungeon family dedication 5/5
Kryptonite 5/5
Me, My baby and my cadillac 1/5
Body Rock 3/5
My Chrome 5/5
U got me 1/5
Clearmont lounge 5/5
Time will reveal 1/5
Hold on 4/5
808 3/5
What is this 5/5
[...] ya drawers 2/5
Lettin go 1/5
Lovin this 2/5

The rest of the songs are stupid interludes, Lil Jon dosent even put that many skits on his CDs! JUst download the songs on itunes (if u can)

3 out of 5 stars Dunno bout got purp? but it got 3 stars from me...........2006-04-10

I'm not a big Big Boi or Outkast fan at all, but the only reason i got this cd was for "Kryptonite"... and while listening to the cd i found a song that is better then "Kryptonite", called "Claremont Lounge"... That's a really good song, and as a DJ i would love to mix that or blend it... i'd be able to do alot w/ it... Another stand out song would be "Hold On" w/ Goodie Mob.

Wish i could have heard Bubba Sparxxx on more tracks... The cd is good, but don't spend over $12 or $13 on this one... I'm glad i got the cd for free thru my music club...me personally, i wouldn't pay more then maybe $7 for it myself..

4 out of 5 stars Camilyan Report.......2006-03-23

Big Boi has been in the game for over 10 years and within that time he has garnered much respect and creditability. The reputation that he has managed to acquire has elevated him to a Hip-Hop legend. Like all Hip-Hop legends he has extended his range of talent to producer, producing his latest album Got Purp? Vol. 2.

"Kryptonite" is the first single and serves many purposes, an infectious beat, and a reintroduction to Killer Mike, as well as showcase of recruits BlackOwned C-Bone and Rock D. He manages to get a reunion of Goodie Mob and Cee-Lo in "Hold On"; it is the group's hottest track since "Rebuilding," Track 9 from World Party. "Me, My Baby, and My Cadillac" is a hot track featuring the classic sound of Sleepy Brown. He adds R&B newcomers Janelle Monae and Scar, which only enhances to his wide-ranging offerings of music.

This is excellent work by Big Boi, producing an album that has a reminiscent vibe but yet very fresh. Got Purp? Vol. 2 is a perfect compilation disc packed with a roster (Goodie Mob, Bubba Sparxx, Killer Mike and many others) that matches his proficiency. The album has a nice diverse sound much like Big Boi's eclectic resonance.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny for those with a Sense of Satire!.......1998-06-18

I started with his first volume as a child, and was happy to learn of a second. A few parts are not as hysterical as I had hoped, but definitely this CD is a Must Hear. My brother & I listened to it as we drove to his wedding, and were singing along, loudly, laughing the entire time. If you can appreciate a good spoof, than this is your best history lesson.
