5 out of 5 stars Marian McPartland is a Musical Treasure.......2007-02-20

This recording is a tour de force of solo piano playing. I often play Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson, and Dave Brubeck, and Keith Jarrett, and Chick Corea, and so on down the list of great jazz pianists. Marian McPartland is not only right in there with these ebony tapping cats, she's up at the ivory top. There is a reason why Dave Brubeck called her one of the top three pianists of the 20th century, maybe like me he has never heard such swinging sonic beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Inventive arrangements, brilliant technique.......2005-10-18

All of the pieces on this CD are available as note-for-note piano transcriptions, which I'm working through. Listening to McPartland play when you're familiar with the transcripts gives a fresh appreciation for her incredible technique and innovative arrangements. My favorite is her take on Ornette Coleman's "Turn Around," in which she magically turns a solo piano into an entire jazz trio.

5 out of 5 stars Marian at her best.......2005-08-18

I love Marian McPartland ! This is my favorite McPartland CD. Interesting chord progressions and sensitive interpretations abound. I have listened to this CD over and over. It is still in my CD changer.

5 out of 5 stars Marian Seems Happy.......2005-03-28

I think that Marian McPartland's music is usually full of joy, but never so much to me as on this album. This is not to say that she can't be solemn, as on a piece such as Willow Weep For Me, but when she plays such a piece, she sounds as if she is really enjoying what she's doing. And on the happier pieces, such as Love You Madly and It's You Or No One, she absolutely bubbles. Whether or not you agree with my joyful hypothesis, you will find a wide variety of songs to enjoy in this collection. McPartland's style sparkles throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Marian McPartland is an amazing pianist.......2004-11-18

This is a beautiful CD. Only a pianist with Marian McPartland's experience of jazz piano styles and delicate ear could produce an album this divine. Marian is able to draw on such a wide variety of harmonic styles that she can make everyday tunes like My Funny Valentine and Willow Weep for Me sound like you're hearing them for the first time. Also, the recording quality of this live performance is excellent. A great CD that I have listened to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars old school... good school.......2005-08-04

No, the songs are not nearly as polished as they got to be and the sound quality of their instruments isn't as good as it got to be... but the energy is definitely throughout this show and it is cool to get and old school version of Phish and their songs.

Disc 1 - starts out with a "fluffhead" (15:23)that definitely goes different places than they usually take it, though the jam might sound boring to some. next comes "colonel forbin's ascent" (7:12) which starts out with a narration by trey. i actually really like this "forbin" over others. then comes in the all mighty "fly famous mockingbird" (7:20). after that they play "harry hood" (10:21)which i think is a little weak, but don't get me wrong it is still "harry hood". next comes "soam" (7:12) which is kind of short, but i like the way they play it a lot (and what they do in that short amount of time). "divided sky" (12:08) to end the disc, and like the "hood" played, it is good, but doesn't live up to what it later will become.

Disc 2- starts out with a "yem" that goes into "possum" and it is actually my favorite "yem" (you can tell that this was one of their best songs early on).. maybe not the best(listen to the ones on live phish 14 and 15) but my favorite definitely and i like the way they go into "possum". they then whistle the andy griffith theme and then play a cover of hendrick's "bold as love" a better version is the one for the encore of live phish 1. then comes in a "ya mar" (6:34) with some cool echoing effects on the mic and it really grooves with page's organ (a sweet page solo i should add). then comes in a fairly short "slave" (6:20) that is a little different. after that comes the classic "ac/dc bag" (6:41), which once again is short but page's organ rocks on this song. then they play a charlie parker tune (which it sounds most people on here do not like it) but i think it definitely gives this show some good variety and i think it is cool to hear phish play some jazz. then comes "funky bitch" and "foam" (not much to say, except that funky sounds about the same and foam is real good)

disc 3- same thing pretty much as the first two discs, not played as great as they grew to be, but played a little differently, which is cool to hear

some old school, yet very good school Phish.. i wouldn't start out with this live phish show (i recommend 1 or 12) but it should be bought if you are trying to get a good variety of the live phish shows

4 out of 5 stars trip back to early phish (3.5).......2005-05-10

If I was rating this compared to all the live phish this probably gets a 2 (its sounds harsh but theres a lot of awesome phish out there).

This is an interesting live phish, I have never heard one of the band's earlier shows until I picked this up. I think its a pretty good buy, but still its '89. There are a bunch of screw ups on it and there are some songs that I would rather not listen to again. Definetly not the first phish you should pick up if your new to the band. Still, You can tell that they are having a lot fun up there, and it has good, youthful energy.

I thought Fluffhead was pretty good(they dont play this song too often), and trey's story that goes from Colonel Forbin's Ascent to Fly Famous Mockingbird is awesome. I didnt think to highly of the versions SOAM and Divided Sky. Disc 2 is probably my least favorite. You Enjoy Myself is a personal favorite of mine and i like hearing how it developed into the beast it became. Hearing them do the Andy Griffith theme is great. I also liked Funky Bitch and Foam. Disc 3 is my probably my favorite out of the 3. Alvenu Malcenu is great. Some other notables are Suzy Greenberg, Dinner and a Movie, and the Lizards.

If your going to get this live phish get it because you want to hear early phish, dont expect anything else.

    5 out of 5 stars Sick Phish.......2004-10-24

This is the only taste of early live phish offered by the Live Phish series, and I can say it is one of my favorites. This album is essential to tracking Phish's progression throughout their carreer. As for the setlist, all three discs are incredible. From an amazing You Enjoy Myself, to a Run Like an Antelope to be reckoned with, Phish flows on all cylinders to play their best.

    5 out of 5 stars A bomber Phish show.......2004-01-06

If you are a Phishhead that likes old school Phish, this is the show for you.

4 out of 5 stars so geeky, so fun!.......2003-12-15

this is another great release in the live phish catalog. a great example of the humor that phish built from this initial sound in 89 to what they produced up until about 97 when they further matured. some high points-the fact that they actually play fluffhead!, the setlist reads like a "best of phish" compilation, dinner and a movie is hilarious, colonel forbin>fly famous mockingbird and lizards give us a great slice of gamhendge which is an important part of phish's repetoire. the playing is great and there isn't much to argue about except that their skills as a band have a long transformation ahead of them to bigger and better things.
now a few bad points (very few!)-phish shouldn't really play tunes like donna lee becuase they don't really play bebop, or jazz at all for that matter (sorry, someone had to say it). it's picky but page's piano sounds terrible but i'm sure in 89 that was a good elec. piano!
overall this show is great but is also an example of what a phish show often isn't like, because of the "dream setlist" shown here and the lack of segues in the later sets. but there's only one place to go when you start off with this much talent...this is highly reccomended.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe you had to be there.......2006-08-22

There was a period there during the early nineties when I caught as many Phish and Dead shows as I could. They were good times. No doubt I lost some precious IQ points, but I had a good time. I used to compare the Dead unfavorably to Phish at least in one respect: Phish didn't sandbag through the first set. They came out and played hard, and sometimes the first set was the better, more intense set, however it happened to work out, but they weren't pacing themselves. It seems so obvious to me now, but I'm not sure if I realized it at the time, but, of course Phish had more energy and gave more to their performances. They were a generation younger.

The third installment of the live Phish series shows us that, by 2000, Phish would be the old-timers, getting by on their reputation and the religious fervor of their uncritical fans. The first set here is measured, there are some moments, but the boys are sparing themselves for a bigger effort later in the night. I particularly like hearing Neil Young's "Albuquerque." Anyone who's spent any time in New Mexico understands why that song can't be played too slow or too leisurely. The second set does have some good jamming. It's a good Page show. Page remains the unsung hero of Phish. Pity the poor keyboardist, always with ten times the talent and just a fraction of the glory. The lead guitarists get to be the star, drummers have that visceral allure, and even bass players have at least that brooding mystique. But the man at the keys is the one we all know worked diligently at his piano lessons while his troglodytic neighbors played dodge ball in the streets. I heard Page say in an interview, I think on Bittersweet Motel (this probably only rated DVD bonus footage at that), that it is his job to listen to the other band members, to know exactly what every one is doing on their instruments at all times. And you can tell. He is the one who spices things up with subtle accents and creative chord voicings when they fall into a long slow jam, open space in search of a groove. He is the one who pulls them back together when they start stepping on each other's toes. His presence prevents Trey from completely spinning off with his reckless guitar gymnastics. What would Phish be like without him? Well, have you tried listening to Trey's solo work?

I like this series, the Live Phish series, but this wasn't one of my favorites, probably just because it represents Phish from an era when I was barely in touch, rarely caught a show. If you jumped on the bandwagon late in the game, this might appeal to you because these are the shows you saw. And, still, I'd rather listen to any Phish bootleg than just about anything on commercial radio, so it's all relative. I'd love to give it about 3.694 stars, but Amazon is partial to integers. So, four stars. Buy it, enjoy. It'd be cool to have all this whole series loaded in your i-pod, along with the Dick's Picks, all your comfort music right there in one handy place to be thieved on the MBTA.

3 out of 5 stars drowning in Darien.......2004-08-02

I attended this show at Darien, a night of mud, coldness, and torrential down pours (Should I even say flooding...). Phish tried their damndest to keep us in high spirits. With the weather slipping into the 50 degree mark, wind, and rain, rain, rain- the audience was feeling a little under (those in the lawn). The second set opened with Drowned, which was wholly appropriate. I gave this show a three star rating and you may ask why.... Well, considering the circumstances of the show, we wanted a little zest to keep our booties warm, but the sounds of mellow saturated the evening. The cover Crosseyed and Painless blessed the song line up..and of course, did not let me down. Also heading the song list, Loving Cup, Suzy Greenburg, Punch You in the Eye, and Prince Caspian. Overall a wonderful show, but the weather appeared to dampen many of our spirits!

    3 out of 5 stars 2000 improv...........2003-07-14

I would actually like to give this disk 3.5 stars due to the great tunes we get on disk one and the Prince caspian to start off an otherwise weak third disk. I love that Phish released a show with both albuquerque and loving cup because those are two of my favorite covers they do.

    Disk 2
However, the second disk is where this show hits the complete deep-end. I am a fan of intence jaming, but I tell you what, the Darien Lake Jam 2 ia a piece of junk. And that is a big piece of 25 minute junk full of sloppy unfocused jams that never really click in gear. That means you get about 30 minutes of listenable music on disk 2 and that is a lucky 30 because the drowned is very sloppy and the jam out of cross-eyed and painless is hard to enjoy too. The only highlight of this disk is the cross-eyed and painless which is very cool and the very toned down dog faced boy.

    Encore
The encore(s)(three actually) you get on this release just flat-out [bad]. Why would they play both driver and the inlaw josie whales. And after that we get a typical Sample in a Jar. How boring. There is literally no excitment hear at all.

I would recommend all the other Live phish over this one actually. Vol. 4, 15, 20, 10, 9, and 7 are especially good.

5 out of 5 stars CANT SAY ENOUGH wonderful things about this mix.......2003-06-27

Unreal recording. Jams jams jams. Song form is to the T also. NEW AND OLD phans will enjoy this. Suzy Greenberg is the best I have ever heard it. You can hear them talking after the conclusion of it...and they end up sarting the Suzy jam again (Darien jam 1). Disk 2 has to me what seems like an old tweeezer type jam (Darien jam 2)..this one is MUST have. And another short blender (Darien jam 3)that melts at the end to ease you perfectly to the end of the disk. Disk 3...well it is obvious the love was in the air that night. It was a rainy show for the lawn folk but something tells me they did'nt care after what was thrown at them. Loving cup warms everyone back up, followed by a wonderful driver. There is a "In law" here that is so so. Wrapping it up with Sample in a Jar which vocally in my opinion was priceless. And what a sample this set will be for you...don't miss out on this one!

5 out of 5 stars I've been really happy with this one.......2003-03-24

I've heard and read a lot of mixed feelings on this one but personally I've really enjoyed this one. The highlight is the second disc "mega-jam" that really grooves into some amazing ambient jams between songs like "Drowned" and "Crosseyed and Painless." I'd recomend this one to the more experienced Phish phan mainly because a less experienced phan may not have developed the ear and appreciation for such seemingly unusual and long jams. But deffinitely check it out. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price for Ari Hest's take On Springsteens "I'm On Fire".......2007-01-22

This type of cd, is something people either love or hate. I usually love this type of cd. Songs performed, in their stripped-down form. Ininitally purchased this disc, because I am a big fan of Ari Hest. No surprise then, that his song is without a doubt my favorite on the disc. Other notable songs include Kyle Riabko's "what Did I get Myself Into" (it really shows how much talent this kid has). Ana Nalick "breathe", Antigone Rising "Don't look back"(can't wait to hear a studio disc from them). I went into this cd, knowing 11 of the 15 songs, so it wasn't really a risk. It shows that all or most of these artists really do have talent. AS I stated b4, this is the only commercial disc you can get the ari track on, and it was tworth the price for that, but even if you aren't a fan of his,
this cd can be an interesting introduction for many, to alot of these artists. Get it, while you can, and b4 theprice is untouchable.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.

Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.

For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.

To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.

(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)

    5 out of 5 stars 6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04

Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.

While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.

Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.

Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...

His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!

The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14

The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13

I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

4 out of 5 stars One great performance & another good one in outstanding sound.......2007-04-17

Anyone that's ever heard one of these interactive CDs they give away with BBC Music Magazine knows the sound is fantastic on them -- brilliant highs with exceptional lows and terrific all around sound. It's no different on this CD that mates an Elgar specialty with a wondeful recording of a Dvorak orchestral piece.

This CD is billed as being "Live from the Proms". I've never visited London and have never been to a proms concert. Based on what I've read over the years, promenade concerts in the Royal Albert Hall feature lesser music like that on this CD, as opposed to full symphonies or other more substantial pieces. I could be all wet about that, too.

Anyway, the music here is taken from two separate concerts. Martyn Brabbins, an energetic conductor if there every was one, leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Elgar's "Falstaff - symphonic study". Like his "Enigma" variations, "Falstaff" is a group of 7 related orchestral movements tied together around the legend and activities of Falstaff, the fictional character from three Shakespeare plays.

Brabbins and the BBCSO are very energetic in this music, which is about 38 minutes' duration and is reminiscent of Elgar's mature style from the symphonies. You wouldn't confuse Brabbins high octane style for that of Barbirolli but it is appealing in its own way and the orchestral playined is splendid. The recording was made during a proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall in Londong on August 3, 2000.

This is followed by Jiri Belohlavek leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra in an outstanding reading of Dovrak's "Symphonic Variations", a 23-minute set of variations presneted here in two movements (the second movement is 4:25 duration and is called "Finale"). I can't say I've ever had much good to say about Belohlavek in the half-dozen or so recordings I've heard by him, but this one is clearly the best thing I've ever heard from him.

Conductor and orchestra come together to produce a highly idiomatic and exciting reading of music that is just not that often recorded. Compared to the plethora of recordings of Dvorak's tone poems like "Wood Dove" and "Noon Witch" and his other orchestral exercises like "Scherzo Capirccioso", the "Symphonic Variations" just isn't recorded often.

This is an outstanding reading of this music in every way, backed up by BBC's first rate engineering and recording, recorded at another proms concert on August 27, 2000. Like all these issues, this comes with easy to understand (English only) notes about the music and its place in the classical music stratosphere.

The availability of this CD on Amazon is a treat for customers since you can't buy this outright in any music store. You can occasionally find BBC Music Magazine recordings like this in used CD shops. Otherwise, you have to subscribe to BBC Music Magazine to get these CDs. If they are all as good as this one, that subscription would be most worthwhile. If the repertoire here appeals to me, snap this up while it's available. The sound is out of this world and the performances are also most worthy.

5 out of 5 stars land mark play of Beethoven.......2001-01-19

Richter's playing always has a sense of undeniable rightness, especially in Beethoven. Although he is always a pianist who care nothing but the music itself, his playing in his late years reaches a status of maturity that it transcents, and almost no longer belong to the world. In this recording, everything is perfect- the rythem, tone control, and the structure and emotion balance. Even the idea that "imperfection is the essence of perfection" is embedded in his playing philosophy. The funeral mark is so emotional deep that it freezes everything and keeps one thinking. As it proceeds one is brought to a further step lower while every time one feels it is the bottom. As to Op. 111, there is no parallel, not even a close one. One moment the undescribable tempo move one's mind as well as his feet, the next the enormous regret and empty feeling sends one to the outter space, then at the last few notes one is saved by the ultimate humanity that only exists in Beethoven. After this record, one will feel there is nothing more profound than the 2nd movemen of the Op. 111, and only Richter in the existing recording can ever reach that level.

Mayber there is a better recording on Op. 111 - the Philips "authorized recording" of , again, Richter.
