Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19
"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.
I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.
Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06
The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."
The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."
This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

As the ebullient ringleader of this all-star Lone Star quartet, Doug Sahm tells this 1990 Austin City Limits crowd that "it's rock and roll conjunto time!" Such a description barely hints at the raucous vitality of the band's bilingual, Tex-Mex border music. The set (also available on DVD) finds Freddy Fender resurrecting his country smashes "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," while the tremulous vocals of some of his earlier, regional hits suggest that he is to Tejano music what Aaron Neville is to New Orleans soul. Conjunto accordion kingpin Flaco Jimenez provides rollicking instrumental accents throughout, while singing with Fender on some of the Spanish-language material. From the rock and roll side, Sahm and keyboardist Augie Meyers reprise their hits from the Sir Douglas Quintet's 1960s heyday, with "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino" steeped in the same musical roots they share with Fender and Jimenez. Such raucous, festive interplay plainly enjoys a home-field advantage in Austin, where the performance finds the foursome hailed as conquering heroes. (The release serves as a memorial to Sahm, who died in 1999 and to whom the album is dedicated.) --Don McLeeseAlbum Description

With the aging of Kris Kristofferson into a venerable icon, it's been easier to appreciate his voice as weathered, whereas the younger troubadour more often heard his vocal style dismissed as wooden. No matter--as confirmed by this 1981 taping for Austin City Limits, Kristofferson's artistry has long owed more to the emotional range, depth, and conviction of his material than to his vocal range. And whatever he lacks in the latter is offset by the harmonies and instrumental support from a crack band including Stephen Bruton on guitar and mandolin, "Funky" Donnie Fritts on keyboards, and the great Billy Swan as utility man. Among the revelations are a surprisingly hard-rocking "Me and Bobby McGee," a rollicking arrangement of "The Pilgrim," and a tender "For the Good Times." Of the later and lesser-known fare, both "Darby's Castle" and "Casey's Last Ride" show Kristofferson shifting from confessional intimacy into more of a narrative mode reminiscent of John Prine, while "Magdalene" and the hymn-like closer, "Why Me," extend his thematic artistry into spiritual inquiry. As is typical with the Austin series, a responsive audience coaxes a particularly spirited performance, with the artist gushing more than once that there's no place he'd rather be. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description

Kristofferson live and at his singin/songwritin' best!.......2006-05-31
It's the concert that almost never was...the night of the scheduled show, a rat chewed through some wires, sending the studio into a blackout. Kristofferson returned the next night invigorated (and armed with a new rat joke) and ready to play the whole night through. These sixteen songs are among his best...from the opening rocker "Star Crossed" to the closing gospel ballad "Why Me." Upbeat, rockin' versions of "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Loving Her Was Easier" parallel the Waylon Jennings covers, yet sound as if they were written to be rocked out. Kristofferson gets controversial on "Magdalene" and sentimental on "For the Good Times" and reflective on "The Pilgrim" and stoned on "Sunday Morning Coming Down." The over-all effect of LIVE FROM AUSTIN TX is this: Kris Kristofferson at his performance peak. He's still the best dang singer/songwriter out there, and if you have any doubts in your head about that, just pick up a copy of this album and LISTEN. Listen with your heart and soul, because that's where this music is going to hit you hardest.

Album Description
A live recording from the beach resort of Crystal Beach, Texas. Recorded on Labor Day weekend, 2002, the album features the "live" sound of the band inter-acting with a very rowdy, very drunk, crowd of beach-loving, beach-music fans. This is a "party" album, full of in-between song banter, and plenty of crowd participation. This album is perfect for playing at your pool party, crawfish boil, or other fun gathering of party people.Customer Reviews:
A great CD!.......2004-05-25
As for the review directly before this one, I don't think that guy has even heard this CD. He couldn't have. First of all, he mentions that the band Hanna's Reef sounds like a garage band trying to play Buffett. Well, there's not a whole lot of Buffett here, and what they do cover is excellent. I've heard that another band out there called "Key West-the Band" used to be comprised of several of the members of Hanna's Reef. Rumor has it that KWTB is so childish that they write reviews of Hanna's Reef CD's, (anonymously)and put down their album. I don't know if that's true or not, but I don't see how anyone would rate this album a 1, on a scale of 1-5. For the record, I do have a copy of the one CD from Key West-the Band that is available here on amazon, called "Americana". It's really hard to review, since almost all of the songs on it are cover tunes. Why put out an album to sell to the public, if it's mainly just remakes of songs by other artists?
Regardless, this is my review of the Hanna's Reef album, so I'll not digress again. This CD has some great tropical stuff on it, including my favorite track, "Beach People, Beach Music". An equally fun song is "Let the Good Times Roll", with a great Cajun beat to it. And the cover of Buffett's "One Particular Harbor" is the best I've heard by anyone other than the Coral Reefer Band. I saw these guys live at the Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores in 2002. They were as good live (and in person) as they are on this album!
THIS MUSIC SUCKS.......2004-04-21
I BOUGHT THIS CD BASED ON ALL OF THESE RAVING REVIEWS THAT YOU'LL READ BELOW.
I TRIED TO DOWNLOAD THE MP3 SAMPLES, BUT PROBLEMS WITH HARDWARE/SOFTWARE/AMAZON/AOL OR ALL OF THE ABOVE KEPT ME FROM FROM SAMPLING THIS PURCHASE.
IT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING.
SOUNDS LIKE MY SONS GARAGE BAND TRYING TO PLAY BUFFETT SONGS.
A fun album!.......2004-02-04
If you are in the mood for a fun album, this fits the ticket. About the only "serious" song on here is "Sunday Morning in New Orleans". It is excellent. And so is the rest of the album.
What was that guy thinking?.......2004-01-26
As for their claim that they are the original members of "Key West - the band", I only have one comment. I saw Key West the band years ago in Pensacola, and it seems like these guys actually are exactly the same ones that were onstage with the band then. Ironically, when I recently saw the band Key West (in Key West, Florida), I didn't recognize a single member except the bass player. I don't really know what's going on with that situation, but frankly, I don't care. I really like this album from Hanna's Reef, and I can't wait to hear their new material.
As for the current ensemble of Key West the band, I don't really care for them too much. They play a lot heavier music now, and they all look like they just got out of jail. I think I'll pass on them...next time.
typical Buffet cover band dribble.......2003-09-26
No contest!
If I were Key West the Band I would sue for misrepresentation!
I tried listening to this music but it was tough to make it all the way thru.Bad, clique lyrics and songs. The singer is good but can't make up for the horrible songs and grainy recording techniques.
Maybe next time -- but I doubt it.

Classic Domino Show Captured On DVD.......2006-08-10
Four songs have been added to the original lineup that was broadcast on TV- "I'm In Love Again"/"Honey Chile", "Three Nights A Week", "All By Myself", and "Let The Four Winds Blow" where the singer-pianist uncharacteristically blows the opening lyric lines. Two minor issues keep this from getting 5 stars. The compilers decided to move "Blueberry Hill" from second to 14th in the running order, but in doing so they leave Fats saying "I'm going to stick with songs starting with B" after "I'm Walkin'". It's trivial- but sloppy. Also, inexplicably, this DVD, at 50 minutes, does not include three songs from the original TV broadcast- "I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday", the frantic instrumental "Swanee River Hop", and the 11-minute "When The Saints Go Marchin' In"/"Sentimental Journey" finale that closed all of Domino's shows. The material could have easily fit onto the disc. Still, these minor quibbles should not stop fans from picking up this DVD as a fine example of Fats Domino and his band in concert.

Supergroup live albums are rare things; rarer still are those that work strictly on musical terms, rather than star fascination. This first volume of Texas Tornados concert recordings surpasses expectations partly because, after nine years together, the Tornados are no longer an uber-collaboration but instead are a road-wizened ensemble. Part Texas bar-band deluxe (as on the shout-along "Hey Baby Kep-Pa-So"), part keepers of the conjunto flame (as on Flaco Jimenez's scale-scorching accordion showcase "La Múcura/A Mover el Bote"), the Tornados have developed a swaggering on-stage personality without ever devolving into Tex-Mex jam-band territory. Blending together performances from two December '98 shows in Austin, the album lacks the thrill of a single hot night on stage (some tracks fade in and out awkwardly) but compensates with fairly gutty song selection. Familiar Tornados tunes are matched with classics by Freddy Fender ("Wasted Days") and Sir Douglas ("Mendocino"), plus a few surprises including a stirring waltz through "Eighteen Yellow Roses" and the Gene Autry warhorse "South of the Border." Jimenez, Fender, Doug Sahm, and Augie Meyers are backed by a faultless rhythm section, some R&B-style horns, and, best of all, some savory pedal steel work, all of which helps to lift these performances above the mere rehash category. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
great songs, poor recording.......2000-08-04
Great Music!!.......1999-07-16
I agree with Amazon's review that it tends to skip around too much. I don't understand why they don't just put the songs in the order the band played them. (Nothing was better than them opening the show with the "tornado" sound and "Hey Baby Que Paso?" but here it is the last track). However, this is the only fault I can find with the CD and I will listen to it for years to come.
My only other hope is that there is a Volume 2 on the way!!

While much of Willie Nelson's band and setlist have changed so little over the decades that some find his performances as predictable (and perhaps as comforting) as a religious ritual, this 1990 taping from Austin City Limits (also available on DVD) offers a few surprises. The revival of the vintage "Bloody Mary Morning" turns into an extended interplay between Nelson's guitar and Mickey Raphael's harmonica, suggesting that Nelson and Family were the quintessential jam band long before that term was in vogue, while the conversational phrasing he brings to Kris Kristofferson's "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)" shows the spirit of a jazz singer. Of the newer material, "Still Is Still Moving to Me" is pure Texas Zen. Only the closing duet with Shelby Lynne on "Milk Cow Blues" misfires, as she takes a brassy turn on a verse from James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues," her overkill at odds with Nelson's characteristic understatement. He plainly feels at home within the studio of Austin City Limits (a series he helped launch), where the close confines accentuate the musical intimacy. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description

Few 1960s garage-band rockers enjoyed a more eclectic and enduring career than the late Doug Sahm. After his Sir Douglas Quintet recorded a string of hits, including "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino," Sahm released both country and blues albums as a solo artist and subsequently formed the Texas Tornados as a Tex-Mex, Grammy-winning supergroup. This 1981 Quintet reunion performance, recorded for the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) finds Sahm and band touching all those musical bases, with Augie Meyers (also Sahm's partner in the Tornados) providing the signature, telegraph-key organ and Alvin Crow serving as a vocal and instrumental foil for Sahm. Highlights range from a cover of Charlie Pride's hit "(Is Anybody Goin' to) San Antone" in medley with Sahm's "Texas Tornado" to revivals from the '60s songbooks of the Kinks ("Who'll Be the Next in Line?"), ? and the Mysterians ("96 Tears"), and legendary Texas ravers the 13th Floor Elevators ("You're Gonna Miss Me"). Though Sahm introduces "Groover's Paradise" as the Austin version of the national anthem, it's "At the Crossroads" that should be. Throughout the performance, Sahm, band, and the Texas audience are all plainly having a ball. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description

The Backyard Barbecue Test.......2007-05-04
1) Come to a peaceful point in your life where, at least for the moment, all is well with your world.
2) Fire up the backyard grill and prepare some burgers, steaks, chops, whatever you want.
3) Pour yourself a big drink (I recommend a margarita or a big ol' Dos Equis, something with a Tex-Mex flavor)
4) While the fire is going, put on Live from Austin, Texas by the Sir Douglas Quintet
5) If you're not in the best mood you've ever been in your life by the time "(Is Anybody Goin' To) San Antone" comes on, you may very well be dead.
I promise you, by the time you get to "Ya No Llores," you will know the meaning of pure bliss.
