Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Kindred for Keeping Neo-Soul on the Map!.......2007-06-04

Deciding which albumn is better - their first or second - is no easy task. They're equally amazing. There's no doubt after listening to this duo on their sophmore cut that fate brought them together. Their songs are so positive and down-to-earth. The vocals are strong and harmonic. I have listened to this CD over and over many times in my car. I especially enjoyed track 6 and the title cut. Be sure to get their 1st albumn as well. Neo-soul and R&B fans love you Kindred!!!

5 out of 5 stars In This Life Together . . . . finally family music has exemplary appeal!.......2007-05-15

I must say, family music has never sounded better. Kindred the Family Soul has a full CD project hit! This CD will definitely have longevity and Kindred will definitely be remembered for years to come---just like Ashford and Simpson. With all of the "let's break-up" and get into self--"self absorbed" music on the market today, it is refreshing to hear "love of family" music that also speaks to the real-life family issues and struggles while possessing positive answers. This is a "let's be real with each other" project that speaks directly to the heart of family. All of the family issue bases are covered, with love, forgiveness and endurance being the answer. I would recommend this to all married couples, husbands and wives of all ages and durations of years. Let's get back to love, strength, forgiveness, compassion and endurance in family, and if you don't know how to express it in words to the one's you love, then purchase this CD and give it as a gift----enough said! Kindred the Family Soul should be right up there with Indie Arie and Amel Larrieux. These three artists have their own styles and direct messages that are definitely worth a listen. Keep Kindred the Family Soul's In This Life Together CD with your own personal family photo album, yes, it is just that good!

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Group.......2007-05-12

The CD really explores the in's and out's of married life as a young adult. I truly appreciate the honesty and love this couple expresses through the music.

5 out of 5 stars LIFE AFFIRMING. WONDERFUL. KINDRED is fantastic........2007-03-14

Add this project to your collection TODAY! I traditionally have a four track rule - if I like at least 4 tracks of a CD I purchase it. I LOVE (with a passion) 10 tracks on this CD. The ones I don't love I LIKE ALOT. It is music with a message - harmonies that move your body ...a project that affirms my soul. peace! - SHAASHAWN "the voyce" :)

5 out of 5 stars Kindred Soul is all that!!!.......2007-03-08

I also have their first CD. I enjoyed almost all of the songs on this album from the first time that I listened to it. It has a nice mellow sometimes up tempo flow and I really love the fact that this is ADULT music. No excessive cursing and misogyny.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

What a difference a decade can make: the original 1995 reissue of Life, Sly and the Family Stone's too-often-overlooked third album, would've triggered few associations beyond the singer's fans (and those who love killer soul-rock hybrids). In 2007, though, the opening shot of "Into My Own Thing" blares as the framework for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice," a rising, organ-and-horn melody statement with a taut, snare-drum thwack as its spine. Then Sly and the Family are off, talking about meditation and a big, bright 1968 vibe they ushered the prior year before with Dance to the Music. The tune titles tell a story: "Chicken," "Love City," "Fun," and the sheer musical cheer of "Harmony," the playful tuba and organ of "Life," even the opening fuzz-guitar grit of "Dynamite!"--these make Life transitional, a bridge from Sly's hard-hitting funk riffage to more rock, more pop. The album flopped commercially in 1968--the psych-funk of "Plastic Jim" and its "Eleanor Rigby"-inspired refrain "All the plastic people / What do they all come for" superseded quickly by the release later in the year of the brawnier, peppier "Everyday People." That latter tune launched the band's 1969 fourth album, Stand!, to significantly new commercial heights (and larger narcotic appetites). Onward and upward. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars Back on the right track........2007-05-15

After the record-label driven "Dance to the Music", Sly & the Family Stone, no doubt given significant leverage with the help of a hit single, produced a stream of fantastic albums beginning with 1968's "Life". In some ways like "Dance to the Music", "Life" streamlines the band's sound a bit, but unlike "Dance to the Music", it accomplishes this by taking everything into a mid-tempo, guitar-driven funk stew.

This creates a significant diversity of sound-- fierce distorted guitars ("Dynamite!"), "Eleanor Rigby" ("Plastic Jim"), fuzz guitars and rotated vocals ("Into My Own Thing"), bizarre psychedelid funk ("I'm An Animal") and even "Dance to the Music" pop/funk ("Love City", "M'Lady") all find their way in. Most of it ends up as mid-tempo funk, but it's all really, really good, the only exception being the goofy closer "Jane is a Groupee".

This reissue remasters the record,a ppends a handful of bonus tracks, and includes a detailed liner note essay discussing the album. Like the other remasters, "Life" benefits immensely from the improved sound and really gets new life breathed into it.

My assessment of "Life" is somewhat tempered by knowledge of what the band would be doing in the future-- while it's a superb record, it pales in comparison to its successors. Both "Stand!" and "There's a Riot Goin' On" are among the finest albums of their era. Nonetheless, there's more than enough great material on "Life" to make it worth the investment. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars DYNAMITE!!!!!.......2007-04-18

Be warned when you put on "Life" you are inviting yourself into a world of rhythmic overload! As the transitional album between Dance to the Music and Stand! this album is filled with a lot of sestained musical dymanics and heavy group activity. The tempo is pretty continually sustained from "Dynamite" through "Into My Own Thing".The hits (the title track and "M'Lady") have the same festive carnaval funk style of "Dance To The Music",although the focus on this recording is much more on the groove, not songcraft so much."Jane Is A Groupee" lives more on the psychedelic shore. The bonus cuts here don't reveal much more then the album does. The major players here?Jerry Martini and Cynthia Robinson are miked up especially high and really punch through."Life" is right about where soul met funk at the crossroads of music and really laid down the groundwork for the upcoming funk onslaught that was Stand!.As the liner notes state 'Life' is often neglected not only because of it's place in Sly's catalog but because it has no big standout hit songs, the exact same problem that befell A Whole New Thing, the band's debut. But you can sing along to everything here, dance to it and even if it's not very carefully constructed it has a lot of wonderful things to say lyrically as well.So as is true with any definition of the word 'Life' is worth all the time you put into it.

5 out of 5 stars Rocking Red!!!.......2005-02-20

One of the same of Red's many great CD's....
Very great children's music, along with Hap Palmer,
I also thoroughly enjoy Greg and Steve---
There are so many great enchanting voices that relax
us, and Red is one of them!!!

This goes for Hap Palmer too!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite children's CD of all time.......2004-05-04

Red Grammer is my favorite musician for young children (and adults as well), and this is my favorite of all his albums. My preschool class love to sign "Hello World" and rock out to "Bueno Appetito" (and parents love to hear them using phrases in 4 different languages). But my two personal favorites for their beauty and message are "on the day you were born" and "Starlight, Starbright". Wonderful for parents, kids, and teachers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Worth paying for.......2003-11-03

A friend of mine knew I was taking my two kids (ages 3.5 and 1.5 years) on a long car trip, and told me his uncle was a children's song musician. He dropped off a (burned) copy of this album to us to take in the car on the trip. We had never heard of Red Grammer before then. Well, we took the trip and everyone loved the album. It gets better and better each time we listen to it. My 3 1/2 year old just rocks out to it in the back of the car, singing and dancing along. It keeps him occupied the whole time it plays. We like it so much that I'm buying a legitimate copy of it, just to support this wonderful artist, and another copy to give to my son's school.

5 out of 5 stars Best kids' music EVER!!.......2002-12-12

This is a wonderful, WONDERFUL collection of kids' songs! My daughters (ages 3 and 5) have been listening to it for more than 3 years -- this was the first tape my 5-year-old sang along with. They both LOVE it! We lost it over the summer and I was happy to replace it because we all missed it so much. The music is beautiful, fun, not annoying to parents, and expresses nothing but happiness. Red Grammer is a genius, and I'm glad (especially on long car trips) that we found him! Also, if you ever have a chance to see him live, do it! He does a great show!

5 out of 5 stars Best children's CD we've ever bought.......2002-10-15

Red Grammer has a nice voice and plenty of musical talent, but the real stars on this CD are the songs themselves. Every one is a gem--singable, danceable, filled with messages of love and peace. I find myself humming them constantly. I'm buying multiple copies to give to my daughter's friends for Christmas.

In 1998, while all the other thugs are popping Moët, Gang Starr and their partners in rhyme, M.O.P., are finally collecting the respect they deserve. Lil' Fame and Billy Danzenie have generated buzz before, but not until First Family 4 Life have they been successful in putting together an end-to-end coherent album. Featuring guest shots from Heather B on "My Kinda Nigga, Part II" and Tef and Jay-Z on the firestarting "4 Alarm Blaze," the Mash Out Posse bring the rawest aural damage this side of the Mad Rapper. --Jon Caramanica

If the only MOP you know is the Ante Up remix with Busta on the radio, then you're in for a surprise. They make rock solid albums all the way through and this is no exception. Probably the best thing about MOP and this album is that they stay hard all the way through the choruses. Lotta other artists have nice verses but put some annoying r&b type, poorly written stuff in between. With MOP its straight call and response, catchy lines, twisting up the rhyme pattern but no nonsense. Check out the beginning of "Handle Ur Bizness" for an example.

I like the production on most of the tracks. The beat on Brooklyn/Jersey Get Wild is surprisingly harmonious but it really works in contrast with the vocals. My only criticism is that there's very little breathing room on this album. Its got a lot fewer skits or soft tracks than most of their other ones so it has the feeling of being always on. But thats what MOP is about anyway. Being in your face and not backing down. This album is a must have in my book.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2006-08-24

I enjoyed this LP just as much as I did Warriorz. Standout production, good raps from both the MC's and the guest artists. Definetly worth owning.

    4 out of 5 stars Another good M.O.P. album.......2004-12-24

After 2 years off again, they're back and as hard as always. Not quite as good as "Firing Squad" it is still a little better then "To The Death" and not many albums can compare to their "Warriorz" so it's behind that. After 2 years off they come back with their signature formula, again = No weak or fake lyrics but straight gutter grimey music and good beats by DJ Premier, Laze E Laze & M.O.P (a couple others contributed to this album as well). Guests as usual on their albums are limited, although this one has more then their other albums. Out of the 15 songs on here, I skip 3, 2 are classics, 2 are ok and the other 8 are good. A must have album for real hardcore rap fans.

This is one of the best albums in Hip Hop History. These cats are still true to the Hip Hop roots. I miss real MC's like M.O.P. Please artist take a picture and use this as your model. M.O.P is M.O.P not a carbon copy, I wish I was on MTV, BET cats. They do hip hop they way they want to, not for just money. They love it. Please don't comment on what you do not understand. Please!!? I don't listen to country, but I respect every single artist doing it. I respect them for their very on creation. If you don't like Hip Hop Don't review it. M.O.P. True Warriors.
