5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-19

This was one of the best CDs I have purchased. If you like old school with a little humor, check this out.

5 out of 5 stars A step back.......2005-10-23

The Last Poets...took me a step back in time. Their words are just as relevant today as when I first heard them...taking the time to LISTEN to their poetry. It was a very turbulent time and the music reflects that. It makes you think. There is no guessing what the words mean or what the message is. The rhythm flows and the words go, describing with intensity the times in this world we live in. Yeah, sit down and listen. Have a cup of coffee; but WAKE UP! linda

3 out of 5 stars Oversized.......2005-07-29

The music was as expected and the rating of 3 stars is given for the oversize cardboard jewel case. CD producers you may get as cute as you would like but stop making CD in non-standard sizes you create a storage problem [which I guess you do not care about], that could be fixed if music came in the same width and hight.

I enjoyed the music, I saw them live for free at Temple University - Philadelphia, PA. in the 70's. It was good to hear the mood of the period and ideally it should never return, that kind of mood!

5 out of 5 stars PROPHETIC STYLES UNDER A RADAR .......2005-04-22

"they say it's gold and so it turns into gold" said Antonio Buscamente in his book El Malcriado. The fact is that The Last Poets have been making thought provoking music longer than most people think. Their unique sound and prophetic style has been under the mainstream radar and yet influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix (who collaborated with The Last Poets)to Jadakiss. It isn't what you know but what you "know." as Bell Hooks phrased it.

5 out of 5 stars Bowie recommended!.......2003-10-25

David Bowie calls The Last Poets' record 'one of the fundamental building blocks of rap.' Asked by Vanity Fair (Nov. 2003) to list just 25 albums from his vast vinyl collection that he had to get on CD, Bowie makes the Poets' debut his first choice.

5 out of 5 stars On the lower frquencies, I speak 4 U.......2005-04-16

"u can't handle the truth," a line so familiar from the film A Few Good Men. But that was just a film and this film isn't Hollywood nor is it Propaganda.
Right On is the soundtrack to the film of the same name which was shot in 1968 and released two years later. The film Right On had beem lost for many years except for a rough cut of it released in the mid 90's. The soundtrack however is intact and clear as if it were performed today. It's content is as true now as it was then. The Last Poets performances are powerfull and charged through out the recording. Right On is for those who seek true consciousnes in spoken word poetry and a must for those other 95 percent who snooz.

"on the lower frequencies, I speak for you"

5 out of 5 stars Are they really the original Last Poets?.......2002-12-17

Burned into my memory from repeated listens. Instantly engaging & familiar. Sweat & bulging veins are both audible, so then is the beauty. Dahveed Nelson, now living in Cleveland, claimed he started the Last Poets, culminating in an unfortunate bitter & violent rivalry between 2 separate factions of Last Poets. This release does not diminish the power of the 1970's Douglas Records incarnation. Quite the contrary, this release adds to the cultural strength & relevance of both units. As relevant today as when it was released, unlike other counterculture figures like the Fugs.

5 out of 5 stars brutal, powerful poetry.......2000-03-20

Never have words and voice been so dramatic to my ears. African beats and jazz instrumentals filter throughout the cd with the voices of anger, intellectualism, passion, and love exploding meaningfully like an adrenalin/steriod- induced beatnik meeting. Strong as a fist and smart as an Encyclopedia, this cd smarts. Beautiful poetry...

    Album Description

The West Coast's answer to The Last Poets, The Watts Prophets played an integral part in the raising of black consciousness and laying the foundations for rap. Formed at the Watts Writer's Workshop, Anthony "Amde" Hamilton, Otis O'Solomon, and Richard Dedeaux began performing together as Watts Prophets, setting their socially and politically conscious poetry to spare, often jazzy musical backing. They made high-profile guest appearances on Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key of Life and Quincy Jones' Mellow Madness. And were later the subject of an Emmy-nominated documentary, Victory Will Be My Moan. In 1969, the group debuted with The Black Voices: On the Streets in Watts and, two years later, followed with Rappin' Black in a White World, which featured accompaniment by ex-Motown songwriter/pianist DeeDee McNeil. The radical, incendiary tone of their work fit right in with the emerging black power movement and attracted unfavorable notice from the government, with the home of the Watts Writers Project being destroyed by fire in 1975 after having been infiltrated by an FBI informant. Throughout the years, they've remained sporadically active as performers, and were rediscovered by the hip-hop generation as their records were sampled frequently by many hip-hop artists including Ice Cube, Digable Planets, and Coolio. The Watts Prophets remain dedicated community activists today, promoting creative self-expression and the arts to young people around Southern California and beyond. Two bonus tracks. Deluxe Arigato Pak! Water Records. 2005.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The Originals..........2005-12-06

The Watts Prophets were revolutionary. This CD consists of their first two albums "The Black Voices: On The Street In Watts", and the classic "Rappin' Black In a White World". Its great having both these releases on one disc since neither one is currently in print. For those that don't want to pay ridiculous prices for used copies this is a more than worthwhile purchase. The package itself is well done too: the booklet is glossy and contains many photos as well as informative liner notes on the history of the group. The raps here are definitely not for the faint of heart: the Prophets don't pull any punches in describing the state of black America in the late 60's and early 70's. It is this intensity that makes their poems so potent whether you are reading them or listening to the group. The Prophets dealt in truth and didn't gloss anything over, and while the directness of their raps may unsettle some, sometimes the truth hurts. Their message on both albums is made that much more direct by the minimal accompaniment and percussion, the majority of the raps are spoken word. Songs like the "What Is A Man" suite on which Dee Dee McNeil sings and plays piano are very powerful and stand out due to the instrumental accompaniment. For those interested in their work, check out their most recent work "When The 90's Came", which contains an updated version of the rap "Everybody Watches" from the "Rappin' Black" album. The Watts Prophets laid the groundwork for all the rappers that came after them, and if you are interested in the roots of today's hip hop this should be an essential purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars Re-membering Black Love.......2006-05-02

The essence of where rap started, years before PE & Ice Cube. The little known Last Poets left a legacy that continues in the spirit of rappers like NAS, when he said last december, HIP HOP IS DEAD.

2 out of 5 stars Two poets carry on........2005-06-04

The followup to their startling debut, "This is Madness" finds the Last Poets short one member-- Abiodum Oyewole had been arrested and sentenced for robbery, but poets Alafia Pudim and Omar Ben Hassen together with percussionist Nilija carried on, with the concept relatively unchanged. The difference is largely in the mood of the music-- Oyewole presence and his aggressive, political statements (the sort of revolution is coming, don't be scared and get up and take it) is gone.

The result is a somewhat less aggressive and more homogeneous album-- there's really only ten tracks, the "chants" are just the backing vocals more exposed. It works in some areas, but its clear the band wants to move on and doesn't quite know how to-- the really exciting material that keeps the aggressive moods of the opener ("True Blues", "Time", "White Man's Got a God Complex") work best, the rest isn't quite as interesting.

This release features really nicely cleaned sound and mini-LP sleeve artwork and really makes quite a nice presentation.

Start with their debut, if you enjoyed that one, try this one out, its got its share of good material, but the debut is better.

4 out of 5 stars Godfathers of hip-hop.......1999-04-20

Anyone who thinks they know about hip-hop, but doesn't know about the Last Poets needs to re-think their devotion. Unfortunately, too many kids my age (18) and younger don't know who these men are. They are the original hip-hoppers, preaching a message of retribution and black power. Most importantly, they are both a literal and metaphorical revolution. They revolutionized music while representing still a revolution of the mind, and a transfer of power from the capitalist pigs to the common man, just like Ho Chi Minh tried to do.

5 out of 5 stars It Would Be Madness Not to Buy This Album.......2003-06-18

"This Is Madness" is a quality foray into the psyche of young black males who were pushing forward a civil rights movement that was by no means guaranteed continuing success. Their militant approach is certainly dated, nevertheless the lyrics are an artistic success in that they make the listener understand and even feel the emotion of the performer. You get all this, plus the fact that the Last Poets are the poineers of modern gansta rap. I highly recommend this album. p.s. sampled by countless hip-hop artists, including Tribe Called Quest.

      5 out of 5 stars Very deep.......2000-09-28

THe Last Poets always backed up what they said just as Gil Scott-Heron did.you feel the intensity&the Messages from these Brothers.it's something that still needs to be dealt with Today.Words that make you Question Surroundings&ask Why? that's the Power of Words&Music.Very Deep&timeless.

      3 out of 5 stars interesting stuff.......2000-09-23

i came across this album from a friend who is a big fan of dead prez. he heard of this album when m-1 from dead prez said this was one of his fav albums. this album is an album of beats with spoken word lyrics. messages are clear and interesting. in "black people, what y'all gonna do" the last poets speak of black people uniting to destroy all the negativity around them. "od" speaks of drugs. "white man's got a g-d complex" speaks of white people with their cars, etc. overall, the messages/lyrics are intersting and poignant. i would of liked to see some more intricate beats but i guess that the beats need to be simple so the words can be the centerpiece. recommended for poets and non-myopic people who want to hear great poetry about black men and their problems.
