5 out of 5 stars Beautiful album!.......2007-04-03

This 1975 release was the last of Bob Seger's pre-Silver Bullet Band albums. Seger, who began his musical career about a decade earlier, gives us great tracks like Tina Turner's NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS,TRAVELIN' MAN,the title track,JODY GIRL and KATMANDU(the latter four penned by Seger). When Seger assembled his SBB,he promoted this album beginning with the first two concerts at Detroit's Cobo Hall on September 4 and 5,1975,resulting in the recording of the double LP live album LIVE BULLET. The aforementioned tracks are heard on the live set. One SBB member is Seger's longtime buddy, bassist Chris Campbell. Other members were saxophonist Thomas "Alto Reed" Kirkman, keybordist Robyn Robbins, drummer Charles Allen Martin and rhythm guitarist Drew Abbott. Robbins and Martin would later leave the SBB,Robbins being replaced by Craig Frost and David Teegarden replacing Martin when Martin was involved in a paralyzing accident. Abbott's departure from SBB in 1981 downgraded the group to four members. The other four tracks are great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bob Seger CD!.......2007-01-10

I just really love Seger's musical style and have since childhood. It's so poetic and magical. I would recommend this CD especially to anyone. I've listened to it all my life and it never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars not my favorite...but its still good!.......2006-09-11

I always underrated this album because it wasnt very "silver-bullet" like. Probably because this is before the silver bullet band! Here are the tracks from the album and each one is better than what people say.

BEAUTIFUL LOSER- this is a great ballad from the record and one of the best. its slower but has a great smooth sax solo in the middle and i nice piano solo near the end.

BLACK NIGHT- A rocker that sounds like the silver bullet kind of seger. It is a great way to rock people into katmandu!

KATMANDU- a fast rocker and probably the fastest seger has ever recorded before the silver bullet band. it has a nice classic rock feel to it and sounds like something off his later album "Night Moves"

JODY GIRL- a slower ballad to sooth you after a couple of harder rock songs. it is accoustic and u get the softer side of bob through this classic.

TRAVELING MAN- this has always been a favorite. and it has a really good live version on live bullet too! this starts off slow but speeds up near the middle.

MOMMA- some pure seger. sounds like some of his others but one of the best songs on the album. this one is so underrated...

NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS- the fastest song since katmandu. this one is another big seger hit that starts off his live set live bullet. however this is the extended version that has an extra version that was taken out of live bullet.

SAILING NIGHTS- a sailing song that seger doesnt mention until his later hit ship of fools. this one is also slow and good like the ship of fools ballad from night moves if not better. it calms and slows you down after nutbush. this is probably my favorite off the cd.

FINE MEMORY- a nice soft ballad to end the album and like the other songs besides beautiful loser, katmandu, travelin man, and nutbush this one is overlooked.

well there you have it! a fine memory and classic from bob seger!

4 out of 5 stars On the verge of greatness........2006-03-03

This was the last album for Bob Seger, before he hit it big. At this point in his career, Seger was devloping his skills as a songwriter. There are some great songs on this album, but some weak moments as well. Lines like "I used to go out evenings, I used to stay out late some evenings" (Momma) show a that a bit of work was needed before Seger could reach the top of his game. On the other hand there are lines like "He wants his home and security, he wants to live like a sailor at sea" (Beautiful Loser) which are great. There are some good rock tracks on the album such as Katmandu and a cover of Nutbush City Limits. These along with the title track, and Travelin' Man, are the best songs on the album.

This album is a definite must for any die hard Seger fan. If you are just getting into him, I would recommend "Stranger in Town, "Against the Wind," or even "Night Moves" ahead this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for A Great Price!.......2006-02-12

I saw this the other day in Wal*Mart for only $5.00! Since I am a Bob Seger fan, heck, I bought it! I am in the process of collecting of albums released by him. Besides that, if you are a true classic rock fan, go get this cd. I think you can spare $5.00, right?

5 out of 5 stars Deep, Deep Soul.......2007-03-10

Yep, the "I'm a Loser" album is the best deep soul affair ever waxed. The other album and extra tracks are just a bonus to let us know that "I'm a Loser" is far and away the best. Swamp Dogg Williams' production is spot on and the songs are full of pain and angst. Whenever I play this to friends and/or party-goers it stops all coversation; not a bad recommendation. I had the "I'm a Loser" album on vinyl and was presently suprised to find it on CD; I bought it without a second thought and play it when I need a dose of deep, heartbreaking soul. Go out and get it now; I'll wait!

4 out of 5 stars Lost Treasure: Doris Duke .......2007-03-02

    Lost Treasure: Doris Duke

Doris Curry was a session singer in New York before releasing several singles in 1967 under her married name, Doris Wellingham. After her divorce and second marriage she was privately Doris Logan, but professionally became Doris Duke, as in the "Black Doris Duke" to the Anglo-American tobacco-fortune heiress of the same name; a stage name much like that of rapper Jackie-O or DJ Coco Channel.

I'M A LOSER: THE COMPLETE SWAMP DOGG SESSIONS... AND MORE consists of 26 songs, comprised of the 1969 Canyon LP "I'm a Loser" (tracks 1-12), the 1971 Mankind LP "A Legend in Her Own Time" (tracks 13-23), and three Jay Boy recordings from 1967 (tracks 24-26). Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 79:07. Booklet includes an extensive essay (in small font) by Tony Rounce, several photographs, original album covers, images of several 45 record singles, and songwriter credits (some chart position information is provided in the essay; producer credits and musician personnel are not included). Sound quality is good.

The disc concludes with three songs from 1967; track 24 was previously unissued (another song, "Make It on Out" was not included due to time restraints). The other tracks are taken from Doris's two albums produced by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams Jr. Among the gems from these classic Soul albums are "Feet Start Walking", the up-tempo "Congratulations Baby", the bluesy "Ghost of Myself", "I Don't Care Anymore", the ballad "I Wish I Could Sleep", and "If She's Your Wife (Who Am I)". Familiar songs include "I'd Do It All Over You" (also recorded by Irma Thomas), "Since I Fell for You", and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix".

The song "I Don't Care Anymore" includes these lyrics: "Then I met a guy as smooth as silk, in a midtown bar / He said with my good looks, I'd go very far // I didn't know what he meant / I thought he was heaven-sent // Until I found out his sweet talkin' / Added up to street walking". There are other great lyrics as well as great melodies, music, and vocals.

Doris's voice is very similar to that of contemporary Blues singer Shemekia Copeland.

This UK import is not widely available, and often expensive, but is a great addition to any collection of late 60s and 70s Soul music.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2007-02-28

Can't add a lot to the previous reviews, just want to confirm everything said. This is true Southern Soul music. Doris doesn't impress you so much with the range of her voice, just her conviction. You feel every word she sings, and this to me makes for the best vocals. Want to also praise the Swamp Dogg production. Lots of nice touches and embellishments that makes this not only a great soul album, but a pop gem as well.

If you love classic Memphis soul of the 60s-70s (Bettye Swann, Candi Staton, Ann Peeples, Syl Johnson, Al Green), you'll love this disc.

4 out of 5 stars All Killer, Some Filler.......2006-05-14

I am avid listener of Southern music and have to say that I would stack the first dozen tracks of this CD up against anything ever recorded at Stax or Muscle Shoals or Philly International. Duke borrowed her stage name from the tobacco heiress, figuring it might help her career, and went into the studio with Swamp Dogg to create some serious alchemy. The covers towards the end of the CD are victimized by poor arrangements (ex "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is tough on the ears) but the stuff from her first album and side 1 of her second effort are top-shelf.

Hopefully someone will reissue Swamp Dogg's "Total Destruction to Your Mind" for another blast of Deep Soul.

5 out of 5 stars no one compares with Doris Duke.......2006-03-17

I have never written a review for anything before, but I feel as if I have to encourage anyone who stumbles on this rerelease of Doris Duke's "I'm a Loser" to buy the bloody thing. You will not regret it.

I absolutely adore what Dave Godin referred to as Deep Soul. This might epitomize the genre. All of the tracks were produced by Swamp Dogg. The First twelve tracks are from the album "I'm a Loser" and the rest are from a follow-up album on the same label and maybe a few extras.

I travel for work quite a lot and people always end up in my car. Doris Duke is always in the player. People inevitably ask who she is. People might inquire because her voice has a raw quality quite unlike any of the other more polished sould singers of whom she was never quite a contemporary. It's that unpolished quality that draws me back to this disk time and time again. In Cleveland, a girl from Torrence, CA told me that the "I'm a Loser" part of this CD was her life story. I thought that was great.

There are four or five tracks (13 - 18) that are great. It does seem as if the second album lacked the cohesiveness of the first. Don't buy this because of the compilation aspects of it. Buy it because "I'm a Loser" may be one of the greatest Soul albums ever produced!

Kudos to Ace/Kent for making this music available. Keep 'em coming.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition for any old school Beck fans.......2006-11-10

I really dig this single. The version of Soul Suckin' Jerk took a little getting used to because I grown up on the original. But after listening for a while I started to really appreciate the differences. The other songs are all classic Beck. Very much in the same style of Mellow Gold. If you enjoyed Mellow Gold, I see no reason why you wouldn't like this.

    4 out of 5 stars I DONT LIKE EP's BUT SOMETIMES............2005-10-28

First of all, its an EP but it has LOSER on it which I already have. Then it also has SOUL SUCKIN JERK which I already have. So what am I paying for? Well first off, SOUL SUCKIN JERK is even better than the one you know (and that song was flippin awesome in the first place).
Well, consider a few things. How much of a BECK fan are you? Do you like the LOSER song? Are you into BECK because you just heard that E-PRO song on the radio?
I like the songs on here a whole lot, personally. I wouldn't have just bought this myself on a whim, I knew ahead of time that I wanted the songs... Like FUME. This is a very raw, old school BECK song, about locking yourself up in a vehicle with your friend and huffing gas to get high. This song has one of the greatest BECK hooks ever....

Theres a fume, in the truck
    and I don't know if I'm dead
    or what the f*ck

Great stuff. Beck doesn't sware like he used to. He used to sware alot. He had a lot more piss and fire in his songs, this stuff may seem very strange to new fish. CORVETTE BURNER is another raw rowdy peice and ALCOHOL is a folksy ONE FOOT IN type of song. If you've never heard the ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE album, this one may seem kind of strange too.
Beck has a lot of ultra rare stuff, B-sides, soundtrack cuts, indie records... One of these days it would be nice to see some sort of anthology be released. Theres so much great stuff by this loser.

As for this one, try and get it cheap, as it IS only three songs that you wouldn't be able to find else where.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Beck single/EP ever.......2005-06-26

With the price of this EP being so cheap, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't buy this. Especially considering that, in my opinion, two of Beck's top ten songs to date are featured as b-sides here. Those songs being the Reject version of "Soul Suckin Jerk" and "Fume". On top of that, "Alcohol" and "Corvette Bummer" are equally as pleasing to the everyday or diehard Beck fan. And although I don't necessarily believe Beck has better b-sides than a-sides, his b-sides are definitely worth checking out (at all costs), and outdo most other band's a-sides in that.

"Corvette Bummer" is a rap/rock laugher that features trademark quirky lyrics and pumping bass, while "Alcohol" is more of a serene, acoustic gem in the vein of tracks from Beck's unknown album, One Foot In The Grave. Next, being my second favorite Beck track ever, "Soul Suckin Jerk (Reject)" takes the two main verses from the original, switches them around, and makes the rapping a bit more distinguishable and amiable. The part that jumps in with 'I got a job making money for the man/throwing chicken in a bucket/with a soda-pop can...' always makes me want to rap along. It does carry on for a long, long time (six minutes), but I think the music is catchy enough to keep it tolerable. The final b-side, "Fume", is a hilarious narrative of a guy and his friend who drive around in their truck and get high enough on broken pencils to say 'and I don't know if we're dead/or what the fxck'. For the first 2:25 or so it's musically simple, but thereafter it goes into endless screams of the aforementioned line. And that's Beck for you.

This really is the greatest Beck single/EP on the market, even after all the years and his latter releases. "Soul Suckin Jerk (Reject)" and "Fume" alone make buying this a no-brainer, while the other two b-sides only add to its greatness. That's four songs you can't find anywhere else. If you love Beck you are going to love this EP, and you shouldn't even think of buying anything else. The toast is ready.

4 out of 5 stars This CD Rocks! It is the best Loser Version........2004-10-18

My favorite tune on this CD is Soul Suckin'Jerk (Reject). Most people who reviewed it, do not like it. But the fact that it is a reject, makes it likeable. But, I really do love the version.
Also, Alcohol is down right good, as is Corvette Bummer. These are the best alternatives on this CD.
    Peace
    Dirk-David

    4 out of 5 stars two versions.......2004-05-18

Evidently, there are 2 versions of this single. I bought one way back in the day which has LOSER on it, accompanied by CORVETTE BUMMER and these two other UNBELIEVABLE songs! TOTALLY CONFUSED, a mellow song with (get this) a female back up singer, and one of Beck's greatest songs of all time--MTV MAKES ME WANT TO SMOKE CRACK, where Beck tears it up on the piano. You need to find this version of the single as well, because the songs on this particular version are really cool, but having a Beck collection at your home without MTV MAKES ME WANT TO SMOKE CRACK is like showing up at church naked...it's UNSPEAKABLE!

I 1st heard these guys on a tape comp (early 90's) and they were great, got a 7" of them but dont really remeber it now... This Cd is okay but its not these same as those tape tracks I fell in love with, I thought this band could be the best in the world but guess some dreams don't come true. Though this is very "alternative" before it's time.

    4 out of 5 stars roots lover's paradise.......2001-02-16

If you're looking for music that has a heartbeat, this tasty stew of roots rock, country and Norteno will satisfy your hunger. This deceptively progressive outfit brings a lot of traditional styles up to date with humor, emotion, and swing. Like the other reviewer said - don't miss 'em live. Still, this recording will almost make you feel sawdust on the floor and smell spilt beer. A reply to those who insist 'they don't make 'em like they used to.'

5 out of 5 stars a great blending of american music.......1999-07-27

this cd is a gem. chris's singing is great. the songwriting top notch and the playing fantastic. he blends several musical styles so they fit in a nice tight cd. also do yourself a favor and see this man live he's the real deal.

    4 out of 5 stars Cool.......2005-09-04

Well, forget everything you heard about Corner simply wanting to be like Radiohead. This album pretty much takes the early industrial (I'm not talking about NIN), lite trip hop, and 80's flavorings that cropped up in Bloodsport and takes it to the extreme. His voice might seem a little much after a while, but I made it through the first 1 1/2 listens before it got a bit annoying in a single sitting. At least he knows how to use his voice qualities and limitations properly, unlike a lot of people who don't capitalize on their strengths and stay away from their weaknesses as they should. It might seem like gimmickry, but that's kind of the whole point of using your voice as a hook. The weird gay heroine addict theme of the photography might throw some people off, but the guy's just skinny, likes funky fo-hawks (read that: really big bed hair), and the color pink. Can't blame a guy for that.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2006-09-12

Whoa, Im the first person ever to review this cd?! Good. Okay, this album sounded very good to me. I brought the album after hearing my favorite song on the computer, which was 'Forelash'. But still, the whole album is great. It dosen't seem like Obo isn't around anymore,(even though I think he was a good artist). I hope people can listen to this album and see if it was good. I think it is. Great job Obo.
